We investigate a singly-charged quantum dot under a strong optical driving field by probing the system with a weak optical field. When the driving field is detuned from the trion transition, the probe absorption spectrum is shifted from the trion resonance as a consequence of the dynamic Stark effect. Simultaneously, a gain sideband is created, resulting from the coherent energy transfer between the optical fields through the quantum dot nonlinearity. As the pump detuning is moved from red to blue, we map out the anticrossing of these two spectral lines. The optical Bloch equations for a stationary two-level atom can be used to describe the numerous spectral features seen in this nano solid state system.

We present linear and circular polarization observations of the water masers in 4 distinct regions spread over 1x2 arcseconds around the HW2 high-mass young stellar object in the Cepheus A star-forming region. We find magnetic fields between 100-500 mG in the central maser region, which has been argued to trace a circumstellar disk. The masers further from HW2 have field strengths between 30-100 mG. In all cases the magnetic field pressure is found to be similar to the dynamic pressure, indicating that the magnetic field is capable of controlling the outflow dynamics around HW2. In addition to several water maser complexes observed before, we also detect a new maser filament, ~1 arcsec (~690 AU) East of HW2, which we interpret as a shocked region between the HW2 outflow and the surrounding medium. We detect a linear polarization gradient along the filament as well as a reversal of the magnetic field direction. This is thought to mark the transition between the magnetic field associated with the outflow and that found in the surrounding molecular cloud. In addition to the magnetic field we determine several other physical properties of the maser region, including density and temperatures as well as the maser beaming angles.

We investigate the radiation emitted by a uniformly moving charged scalar particle in the space-time of a point-like global monopole. We calculate the total energy radiated by the particle and the corresponding spectrum, for small solid angle deficit. We show that the radiated energy is proportional to the cube of the velocity of the particle and to the cube of the Lorenz factor, in the non-relativistic and ultra-relativistic cases, respectively.

Drawing on experimental data for baryon resonances, Hamiltonian effective field theory (HEFT) is used to predict the positions of the finite-volume energy levels to be observed in lattice QCD simulations of the lowest-lying $J^P=1/2^-$ nucleon excitation. In the initial analysis, the phenomenological parameters of the Hamiltonian model are constrained by experiment and the finite-volume eigenstate energies are a prediction of the model. The agreement between HEFT predictions and lattice QCD results obtained on volumes with spatial lengths of 2 and 3 fm is excellent. These lattice results also admit a more conventional analysis where the low-energy coefficients are constrained by lattice QCD results, enabling a determination of resonance properties from lattice QCD itself. Finally, the role and importance of various components of the Hamiltonian model are examined.

We have studied the velocity field of the Blue Compact Dwarf galaxy Mrk86 (NGC2537) using data provided by 14 long-slit optical spectra. This kinematical information is complemented with narrow-band ([OIII]5007A and Halpha) and broad-band (B, V, Gunn-r and K) imaging. The analysis of the galaxy global velocity field suggests that the ionized gas could be distributed in a rotating inclined disk, with projected central angular velocity of Omega=34 km/s/kpc. The comparison between the stellar, HI and modeled dark matter density profile, indicates that the total mass within its optical radius is dominated by the stellar component. Peculiarities observed in its velocity field can be explained by irregularities in the ionized gas distribution or local motions induced by star formation. Kinematical evidences for two expanding bubbles, Mrk86-B and Mrk86-C, are given. They show expanding velocities of 34 km/s and 17 km/s, Halpha luminosities of 3x10^38 erg/s and 1.7x10^39 erg/s, and physical radii of 374 and 120 pc, respectively. The change in the [SII]/Halpha, [NII]/Halpha, [OII]/[OIII] and [OIII]/Hbeta line ratios with the distance to the bubble precursor suggests a diminution in the ionization parameter and, in the case of Mrk86-B, an enhancement of the shock-excited gas emission. The optical-near-infrared colours of the bubble precursors are characteristic of low metallicity star forming regions (0.2 Zsun) with burst strengths of about 1 per cent in mass.

We comprehensively analyse the theoretical prediction for the Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen, and the associated determination of the proton radius. We use effective field theories. This allows us to relate the proton radius with well-defined objects in quantum field theory, eliminating unnecessary model dependence. The use of effective field theories also helps us to organize the computation so that we can clearly state the parametric accuracy of the result. In this paper we review all (and check several of) the contributions to the energy shift of order $\alpha^5$, as well as those that scale like $\alpha^6\times$logarithms in the context of non-relativistic effective field theories of QED.

We present magnetohydrodynamic simulations aimed at studying the effect of the magnetic field on the production of turbulence through various instabilities during the formation of molecular clouds (MCs) by converging flows. We particularly focus on the subsequent star formation (SF) activity. We study four magnetically supercritical models with magnetic field strengths $B= 0$, 1, 2, and 3 $\mu$G (corresponding to mass-to-flux ratios of $\infty$, 4.76, 2.38, and 1.59 times the critical value), with the magnetic field initially aligned with the flows. We find that, for increasing magnetic field strength, the clouds formed tend to be more massive, denser, less turbulent, and with higher SF activity. This causes the onset of star formation activity in the non-magnetic or more weakly magnetized cases to be delayed by a few Myr in comparison to the more strongly magnetized cases. We attribute this behavior to a suppression of the nonlinear thin shell instability (NTSI), which is the main mechanism responsible for turbulence generation in the forming clouds, by the mean magnetic field. This result is contrary to the standard notion that the magnetic field provides support to the clouds, thus reducing their SFR. However, our result is a completely nonlinear one, and could not be foreseen from simple linear considerations.

In this paper, we investigate vortex dynamics in a two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model coupled with a weak artificial magnetic field, a random white noise and a dissipation. Origin of the noise and dissipation is considered as thermal fluctuations of atoms that do not participate the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). Solving a stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii equation to this system, we show that the interplay of the magnetic field and the white noise generates vortices in the bulk of the BEC and stable steady states of vortices form after a transition period. We calculate the incompressible part of the kinetic-energy spectrum of the BEC. In the transition period, a Kolmogorov $k^{-5/3}$ spectrum appears in the infrared regime with the wave number $k$, $k \zeta^{-1}$, the spectrum behaves as $k^{-3}$. On the other hand in the steady states, another scaling low appears. We find a relationship between the above mentioned kinetic-energy spectra and the velocity of vortices. By an inverse cascade, the large velocity of a few created vortices develops the Kolmogorov $k^{-5/3}$ spectrum.

In this article, we study the boundary inverse problem of determining the aligned magnetic fiaeld appearing in the magnetic Schr\"odinger equation in a periodic quantum cylindrical waveguide. We prove a Holder stability estimate with respect to the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, by means of the geometrical optics solutions of the magnetic Schrodinger equation.

We determine the effective field theory in (2+1)-dimensional space and time that captures the long wave length and low-energy limit of fermions hopping on a honeycomb lattice at half-filling when both a dominant intrinsic and subdominant Rashba spin-orbit couplings are present. This effective field theory for a Z_2 topological insulator (the Kane-Mele model at vanishing uniform and staggered chemical potentials) is a perturbation around a double Chern-Simons theory, with the U(1) gauge invariance associated to spin conservation explicitly broken due to the Rashba spin orbit coupling. Nonetheless, we find that the effective field theory has a BRST symmetry that allows us to construct the bulk-edge correspondence.

Different sets of metastable states can be reached in glassy systems below some transition temperature depending on initial conditions and details of the dynamics. This is investigated for the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin glass model with long ranged interactions. In particular, the time dependent local field distribution and energy are calculated for zero temperature. This is done for a system quenched to zero temperature, slow cooling or simulated annealing, a greedy algorithm and repeated tapping. Results are obtained from Monte-Carlo simulations and a Master-Fokker-Planck approach. A comparison with replica symmetry broken theory, evaluated in high orders, shows that the energies obtained via dynamics are higher than the ground state energy of replica theory. Tapping and simulated annealing yield on the other hand results which are very close to the ground state energy. The local field distribution tends to zero for small fields. This is in contrast to the Edwards flat measure hypothesis. The distribution of energies obtained for different tapping strengths does again not follow the canonical form proposed by Edwards.

In addition, a remote-controlled hydraulic gate system is being built, allowing for operational and logistical flexibility. Extensive electrical work is being done to support the facility and to accommodate the arrival of aid, both by land and by sea. The floating pier, through which the humanitarian aid will be transferred, is being built by the Americans and will be connected to the shore. While in maritime space, the Naval Branch will secure the forces in the humanitarian aid mission, from the stage of the arrival of the naval SDF until the end of the operation.

This article serves as a pedagogical introduction to the problem of motion in classical field theories. The primary focus is on self-interaction: How does an object's own field affect its motion? General laws governing the self-force and self-torque are derived using simple, non-perturbative arguments. The relevant concepts are developed gradually by considering motion in a series of increasingly complicated theories. Newtonian gravity is discussed first, then Klein-Gordon theory, electromagnetism, and finally general relativity. Linear and angular momenta as well as centers of mass are defined in each of these cases. Multipole expansions for the force and torque are then derived to all orders for arbitrarily self-interacting extended objects. These expansions are found to be structurally identical to the laws of motion satisfied by extended test bodies, except that all relevant fields are replaced by effective versions which exclude the self-fields in a particular sense. Regularization methods traditionally associated with self-interacting point particles arise as straightforward perturbative limits of these (more fundamental) results. Additionally, generic mechanisms are discussed which dynamically shift --- i.e., renormalize --- the apparent multipole moments associated with self-interacting extended bodies. Although this is primarily a synthesis of earlier work, several new results and interpretations are included as well.

Linear and nonlinear optical absorption coefficients of the two-dimensional semiconductor ring in the perpendicular magnetic field $\bf B$ are calculated within independent electron approximation. Characteristic feature of the energy spectrum are crossings of the levels with adjacent nonpositive magnetic quantum numbers as the intensity $B$ changes. It is shown that the absorption coefficient of the associated optical transition is drastically decreased at the fields corresponding to the crossing. Proposed model of the Volcano disc allows to get simple mathematical analytical results, which provide clear physical interpretation. An interplay between positive linear and intensity-dependent negative cubic absorption coefficients is discussed; in particular, critical light intensity at which additional resonances appear in the total absorption dependence on the light frequency, is calculated as a function of the magnetic field and levels' broadening.

We implement a systematic effective field theory approach to the benchmark process $\mu\to e \gamma$, performing automated one-loop computations including dimension 6 operators and studying their anomalous dimensions. We obtain limits on Wilson coefficients of a relevant subset of lepton-flavour violating operators that contribute to the branching ratio $\mu\to e \gamma$ at one-loop. In addition, we illustrate a method to extract further constraints induced by the mixing of operators under renormalisation-group evolution. This results in limits on the corresponding Wilson coefficients directly at the high scale. The procedure can be applied to other processes as well and, as an example, we consider also lepton-flavour violating decays of the $\tau$.

We study the stability and energetics associated to skyrmions appear- ing as excitations on curved surfaces. Using a continuum model we show that the presence of cylindrically radial and azimuthal fields destabilizes the skyrmions that appear in the absence of an external field. Weak fields generate fractional skyrmions while strong magnetic fields yield stable 2{$\pi$}- skyrmions, which have their widths diminished by the magnetic field strength. Under azimuthal fields vortex appear as stable states on the curved surface.

The equation of state (EOS) of a Fermi superfluid is investigated in the BCS-BEC crossover at zero temperature. We discuss the EOS based on Monte-Carlo (MC) data and asymptotic expansions and the EOS derived from the extended BCS (EBCS) mean-field theory. Then we introduce a time-dependent density functional, based on the bulk EOS and Landau's superfluid hydrodynamics with a von Weizs\"acker-type correction, to study the free expansion of the Fermi superfluid. We calculate the aspect ratio and the released energy of the expanding Fermi cloud showing that MC EOS and EBCS EOS are both compatible with the available experimental data of $^6$Li atoms. We find that the released energy satisfies an approximate analytical formula that is quite accurate in the BEC regime. For an anisotropic droplet, our numerical simulations show an initially faster reversal of anisotropy in the BCS regime, later suppressed by the BEC fluid.

We present results of a morphological analysis of a small subset of the Spitzer Wide-area InfraRed Extragalactic survey (SWIRE) galaxy population. The analysis is based on public ACS data taken inside the SWIRE N1 field, which are the deepest optical high-resolution imaging available within the SWIRE fields as of today. Our reference sample includes 156 galaxies detected by both ACS and SWIRE. Among the various galaxy morphologies, we disentangle two main classes, spheroids (or bulge-dominated galaxies) and disk-dominated ones, for which we compute the number counts as a function of flux. We then limit our sample to objects with IRAC fluxes brighter than 10 microJy, estimated ~90% completeness limit of the SWIRE catalogues, and compare the observed counts to model predictions. We find that the observed counts of the spheroidal population agree with the expectations of a hierarchical model while a monolithic scenario predicts steeper counts. Both scenaria, however, under-predict the number of late-type galaxies. These observations show that the large majority (close to 80 per cent) of the 3.6 and 4.5 micron galaxy population, even at these moderately faint fluxes, is dominated by spiral and irregular galaxies or mergers.

Two computer models using the method of images to determine the pressure amplitude and phase distribution in a wedge shaped medium overlaying a fast fluid bottom were studied. WEDGE used a source at infinity and was constrained to upslope, on axis predictions, while CROSS SLOPE, using a source at finite distance, made predictions anywhere within the medium. Comparison of the two programs suggest that an infinite source is not approached until the source exceeds six hundred dump distances from the apex. CROSS SLOPE predictions of pressure amplitude were in agreement with experimental data obtained in the upslope direction, and with sound fields similar to that described by the theory of Buckingham but of much richer variety.
