In this episode, Dave and Jamison answer these questions: I've been an engineer for about 5 years and in the last two jobs, rock-star programmers have made my life very difficult. I define rock star programmers as ones with ability to produce lots of code and implement features at a pace that dwarfs my own. In my last job, the RSP would constantly rewrite core libraries and I would have to figure out his design and rewrite my code to adapt to the new design multiple times. In the current job, the RSP is very uncommunicative but with his sheer productivity steers the project into wild directions that are always coming as a surprise. Half the time my work then becomes throw-away because I was working based on the previous design. Am I a slowpoke and I'm seeing a normal programmer as a rock star or are these programmers just slightly above normal programmers but creating lots of work for everyone else? Managers are completely starry eyed at RSP and so talking to managers seems like a bad idea. What should I do? How do you feel about sharing salaries amongst your co-workers? I'm about to have my yearly review and I get the sense that my raise (which has already been promised to me) will be underwhelming given how stingy the company has been previously. That is simply a hunch based on previous experience and the fact that our team budgets have tightened up in the past 6 months. Recently a co-worker let it slip what his salary is, and though I don't like playing the comparison game, it made me feel underappreciated. I discovered that he was making the same salary I was, but for lower quality of work and less contributions to the team. I've heard some devs in other companies advocate for sharing salaries amongst their peers, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea. Will sharing my salary and encouraging my co-workers to do the same, allow for myself and my co-workers to better understand our value and help us negotiate raises? Or will it simply foster resentment and division?

Flight data for 17,000 orbital cycles are reviewed and summarized. The nickel cadmium battery system operated without failure or abnormality. Battery trend analysis used in determining the feasibility of extending mission life is discussed. The life test data for 20% depth of discharge indicates design life requirements would be reached even at a deeper depth of discharge.

Back dropped against a blue and white Earth, the Space Shuttle Orbiter Atlantis was photographed by an Expedition 5 crew member onboard the International Space Station (ISS) during rendezvous and docking operations. Docking occurred at 10:17 am on October 9, 2002. The Starboard 1 (S1) Integrated Truss Structure, the primary payload of the STS-112 mission, can be seen in Atlantis' cargo bay. Installed and outfitted within 3 sessions of Extravehicular Activity (EVA) during the 11 day mission, the S1 truss provides structural support for the orbiting research facility's radiator panels, which use ammonia to cool the Station's complex power system. The S1 truss, attached to the S0 (S Zero) truss installed by the previous STS-110 mission, flows 637 pounds of anhydrous ammonia through three heat rejection radiators.

Shadow-striped Saturn and its exquisitely thin rings occupy the near-field view in this Cassini image, while a crescent moon Rhea hangs in the distance. A couple of bright pixels at the center of the image mark the location of the tiny moon Pan (26 kilometers, or 16 miles across). As Saturn?s second-largest moon, Rhea is 1,528 kilometers wide (949 miles). The image was taken in visible light with the Cassini spacecraft narrow-angle camera on Feb. 3, 2006, at a distance of approximately 4.1 million kilometers (2.5 million miles) from Saturn and 4.6 million kilometers (2.9 million miles) from Rhea. The image scale is 28 kilometers (17 miles) per pixel on Rhea. The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington, D.C. We investigate the two-body properties of a spin-1/2 Fermi gas subject to a spin-orbit coupling induced by laser fields. When an attractive s-wave interaction between unlike spins is present, the system may form a dimer bound state. Surprisingly, in the presence of a Zeeman field along the direction of the spin-orbit coupling, the bound state obtains finite center-of-mass mechanical momentum, whereas under the same condition but in the absence of the two-body interaction, the system has zero total momentum. This unusual result can be regarded as a consequence of the broken Galilean invariance by the spin-orbit coupling. Such a finite-momentum bound state will have profound effects on the many-body properties of the system.

A review and analysis of the first in-orbit year of transponder operation aboard the fifth experimental satellite built by Lincoln Laboratory and launched 1 July 1967. The measured performance of the satellite's UHF transponder as a communications repeater is discussed as are its beacon and telemetry systems.

The spin-orbit (SO) interaction, emerging naturally from the Relativistic Mean Field (RMF) theory is examined critically in the light of the recently measured excitation energy differences between the terminating states built on two different configurations for nuclei belonging to the lower pf shell. The calculations are carried out using the cranked RMF framework. To further probe the iso-vector dependence of the spin-orbit potential, the energy spacing between the g_{7/2} and h_{11/2} states in the Sb-chain is compared to experiment. It is found that the calculation at the quantitative level deviates strongly from the experiment. In particular the balance of the iso-scalar and iso-vector strengths of the effective one body SO potential indicates that additional terms like tensor couplings may be needed to account for the experimental data.

The influence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling on zero conductance resonances appearing in one dimensional ring asymmetrically coupled to two leads is investigated. For this purpose, the transmission function of the corresponding one-electron scattering problem is derived analytically and analyzed in the complex energy plane with focus on the zero-pole structure characteristic of transmission (anti)resonances. The lifting of real conductance zeros due to spin-orbit coupling in the asymmetric Aharonov-Casher (AC) ring is related to the breaking of spin reversal symmetry in analogy to the time-reversal symmetry breaking in the asymmetric Aharonov-Bohm (AB) ring.

This report presents the results obtained from the solar cell experiment aboard the NTS-2 satellite after 1,176 dyas in orbit. The objective of the solar cell experiment is to evaluate the performance and radiation hardness of state-of-the-art solar cells in the space environment. The experiment is comprised of fifteen separate experimental modules each containing five 2 x 2 cm solar cells connected in series. The solar cell types include advanced state-of-the-art silicon solar cells such as the COMSAT CNR cell, the Spectrolab Textured Helios Reflector cell, and the Solarex Vertical Junction cell. Also included for the first time in a flight experiment is the Hughes gallium-arsenide/gallium-aluminum-arsenide cell. There are also on board experiments to evaluate environmental effects on coverslip adhesives.

We study which and how a periodic orbit in phase space links to both the largest Lyapunov exponent and the expectation values of macroscopic variables in a Hamiltonian system with many degrees of freedom. The model which we use in this paper is the discrete nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. Using a method based on the modulational estimate of a periodic orbit, we predict the largest Lyapunov exponent and the expectation value of a macroscopic variable. We show that (i) the predicted largest Lyapunov exponent generally depends on the periodic orbit which we employ, and (ii) the predicted expectation value of the macroscopic variable does not depend on the periodic orbit at least in a high energy regime. In addition, the physical meanings of these dependencies are considered.

We study the effect of splitting and zitterbewegung of 1D and 2D electron wave packets in the semiconductor quantum well under the influence of the Rashba spin orbit coupling. Results of our investigations show that the spin orbit interaction induces dramatic qualitative changes in the evolution of spin polarized wave packet. The initial wave packet splits into two parts with different spin polarization propagating with unequal group velocity. This splitting appears due to the presence of two branches of electron spectrum corresponding to the stationary states with different chirality. It is demonstrated also that in the presence of external magnetic field B$ perpendicular to the electron gas plane the wave packet splits into two parts which rotates with different cyclotron frequencies. It was shown that after some periods the electron density distributes around cyclotron orbit and the motion acquire an irregular character. Our calculations were made for both cases of weak and strong spin orbit coupling.

We consider the magnetic response of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) with both Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling to a microwave excitation. We generalize the results of [A. Shnirman and I. Martin, Europhys. Lett. 78, 27001 (2007).], where pure Rashba coupling was studied. We observe that the microwave with the in-plane electric field and the out-of-plane magnetic field creates an out-of-plane spin polarization. The effect is more prominent in clean systems with resolved spin-orbit-split subbands. Considered as response to the microwave magnetic field, the spin-orbit contribution to the magnetization far exceeds the usual Zeeman contribution in the clean limit. The effect vanishes when the Rashba and the Dresselhaus couplings have equal strength.

We study the orbits of $G=\mathrm{GL}(V)$ in the enhanced nilpotent cone $V\times\mathcal{N}$, where $\mathcal{N}$ is the variety of nilpotent endomorphisms of $V$. These orbits are parametrized by bipartitions of $n=\dim V$, and we prove that the closure ordering corresponds to a natural partial order on bipartitions. Moreover, we prove that the local intersection cohomology of the orbit closures is given by certain bipartition analogues of Kostka polynomials, defined by Shoji. Finally, we make a connection with Kato's exotic nilpotent cone in type C, proving that the closure ordering is the same, and conjecturing that the intersection cohomology is the same but with degrees doubled.

The transiting extrasolar planet XO-3b is remarkable, with a high mass and eccentric orbit. The unusual characteristics make it interesting to test whether its orbital plane is parallel to the equator of its host star, as it is observed for other transiting planets. We performed radial velocity measurements of XO-3 with the SOPHIE spectrograph at the 1.93-m telescope of Haute-Provence Observatory during a planetary transit, and at other orbital phases. This allowed us to observe the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect and, together with a new analysis of the transit light curve, to refine the parameters of the planet. The unusual shape of the radial velocity anomaly during the transit provides a hint for a nearly transverse Rossiter-McLaughlin effect. The sky-projected angle between the planetary orbital axis and the stellar rotation axis should be lambda = 70 +/- 15 degrees to be compatible with our observations. This suggests that some close-in planets might result from gravitational interaction between planets and/or stars rather than migration due to interaction with the accretion disk. This surprising result requires confirmation by additional observations, especially at lower airmass, to fully exclude the possibility that the signal is due to systematic effects.

We present theoretical studies of the influence of spin orbit coupling on the spin wave excitations of the Fe monolayer and bilayer on the W(110) surface. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is active in such films, by virtue of the absence of reflection symmetry in the plane of the film. When the magnetization is in plane, this leads to a linear term in the spin wave dispersion relation for propagation across the magnetization. The dispersion relation thus assumes a form similar to that of an energy band of an electron trapped on a semiconductor surfaces with Rashba coupling active. We also show SPEELS response functions that illustrate the role of spin orbit coupling in such measurements. In addition to the modifications of the dispersion relations for spin waves, the presence of spin orbit coupling in the W substrate leads to a substantial increase in the linewidth of the spin wave modes. The formalism we have developed applies to a wide range of systems, and the particular system explored in the numerical calculations provides us with an illustration of phenomena which will be present in other ultrathin ferromagnet/substrate combinations.

The multiple system V505 Sagittarii is composed of at least three stars: a compact eclipsing pair and a distant component, which orbit is measured directly using speckle interferometry. In order to explain the observed orbit of the third body in V505 Sagittarii and also other observable quantities, namely the minima timings of the eclipsing binary and two different radial velocities in the spectrum, we thoroughly test a fourth-body hypothesis - a perturbation by a dim, yet-unobserved object. We use an N-body numerical integrator to simulate future and past orbital evolution of 3 or 4 components in this system. We construct a suitable chi^2 metric from all available speckle-interferometry, minima-timings and radial-velocity data and we scan a part of a parameter space to get at least some of allowed solutions. In principle, we are able to explain all observable quantities by a presence of a fourth body, but the resulting likelihood of this hypothesis is very low. We also discuss other theoretical explanations of the minima timings variations. Further observations of the minima timings during the next decade or high-resolution spectroscopic data can significantly constrain the model.

The SOI energy is evaluated from anti-crossing or SOI induced hybridization between the ground and excited states with opposite spins. The magnetic angular dependence of the SOI energy falls on an absolute cosine function for azimuthal rotation, and a cosine-like function for tilting rotation. The SOI energy is even quenched at a specific rotation. These angular dependence compare well to calculation of Rashba SOI in a two-dimensional harmonic potential.

Effects of the spin orbit-force on hadronic systems with strangeness or charm are investigated by a valence quark model with the instanton-induced interaction. By introducing this interaction, the spin-orbit splittings in the negative-parity hyperons becomes 0.14 -- 0.37 times smaller. The flavor-octet baryon mass spectrum and the splittings in the charmed baryons become consistent with the experiments. Though the splitting is also reduced in the flavor-singlet baryons, it still gives two third of the experimental value. The reduction comes from the cancellation between the one-gluon exchange and the instanton-induced interaction, which is channel-specific. In most of the two-baryon channels, the symmetric and antisymmetric spin-orbit force of the YN interaction remains strong after introducing this instanton effect. A few exceptional channels, however, are found where the cancellation affects strongly and the spin-orbit force becomes small.

In this note we investigate the normality of closures of orthogonal and symplectic nilpotent orbits in positive characteristic. We prove that the closure of such a nilpotent orbit is normal provided that neither type d nor type e minimal irreducible degeneration occurs in the closure, and conversely if the closure is normal, then any type e minimal irreducible degeneration does not occur in it. Here, the minimal irreducible degenerations of a nilpotent orbit are introduced by W. Hesselink in [6] (or see [11] from which we take Table 1 for the complete list of all minimal irreducible degenerations). Our result is a weak version in positive characteristic of [11, Theorem 16.2(ii)], one of the main results of [11] over complex numbers.

We establish a general formalism of the bulk spin polarization (BSP) and the current-based spin polarization (CSP) for mesoscopic ferromagnetic and spin-orbit interaction (SOI) semiconducting systems. Based on this formalism, we reveal the basic properties of BSP and CSP and their relationships. The BSP describes the intrinsic spin polarized properties of devices. The CSP depends on both intrinsic parameters of device and the incident current. For the non-spin-polarized incident current with the inphase spin-phase coherence, CSP equals to BSP. We give analytically the BSP and CSP of several typical nanodevice models, ferromagnetic nanowire, Rashba nanowire and rings. These results provide basic physical behaviors of BSP and CSP and their relationships.

Monolayers of group 6 transition metal dichalcogenides are promising candidates for future spin-, valley-, and charge-based applications. Quantum transport in these materials reflects a complex interplay between real spin and pseudo-spin (valley) relaxation processes, which leads to either positive or negative quantum correction to the classical conductivity. Here we report experimental observation of a crossover from weak localization to weak anti-localization in highly n-doped monolayer MoS2. We show that the crossover can be explained by a single parameter associated with electron spin lifetime of the system. We find that the spin lifetime is inversely proportional to momentum relaxation time, indicating that spin relaxation occurs via Dyakonov-Perel mechanism.

Although hydrogen in external fields is a paradigm for the application of periodic orbits and the Gutzwiller trace formula to a real system, the trace formula has never been applied successfully to other Rydberg atoms. We show that spectral fluctuations of general Rydberg atoms are given with remarkable precision by the addition of diffractive terms. Previously unknown features in atomic spectra are exposed: there are new modulations that are neither periodic orbits nor combinations of periodic orbits; `core-shadowing' generally decreases primitive periodic orbit amplitudes but can also lead to increases.

The first study of two-dimensional electron gas in surface layers on HgMnTe with inverted bands is carried out experimentally and theoretically. It is shown that the structure of investigated capacitance magnetooscillations in HgMnTe MOS structures is fully similar to the one in the non-magnetic narrow-gap semiconductor HgCdTe and the sole effect due to exchange interaction is the temperature shift of beat nodes. The information about exchange effects is obtained only due to our modeling of oscillations, because any pronounced changes in the position of oscillations are not observed and the separate spin components are not resolved. The Landau levels are calculated in the framework of concept we developed previously for the description of subband dispersions in zero magnetic field B=0. The new parameters (like those of $T/\sqrt{eB}$) arise in the theory of magnetooscillations in the semiconductors with quasirelativistic spectrum in contrast to the case of parabolic bands. The modeling shows that the spin-orbit splitting far exceeds a contribution due to exchange interaction. The calculated amplitudes of ``partial'' oscillations for different spin branches of spectrum are essentially different in accordance with the observed difference in the intensity of corresponding lines in Fourier spectra. The comparison between experiment and theory for different temperatures and parameters of exchange interaction is reported. The dominant mechanisms of the scattering responsible for the broadening of Landau levels are discussed.

We use microscopic linear response theory to derive a set of equations that provide a complete description of coupled spin and charge diffusive transport in a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) with the Rashba spin-orbit (SO) interaction. These equations capture a number of interrelated effects including spin accumulation and diffusion, Dyakonov-Perel spin relaxation, magnetoelectric, and spin-galvanic effects. They can be used under very general circumstances to model transport experiments in 2DEG systems that involve either electrical or optical spin injection. We comment on the relationship between these equations and the exact spin and charge density operator equations of motion. As an example of the application of our equations, we consider a simple electrical spin injection experiment and show that a voltage will develop between two ferromagnetic contacts if a spin-polarized current is injected into a 2DEG, that depends on the relative magnetization orientation of the contacts. This voltage is present even when the separation between the contacts is larger than the spin diffusion length.

We predict that unpolarized charge current driven through the longitudinal leads attached to ballistic quantum-coherent two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in semiconductor heterostructure will induce a {\em pure} spin current, which is not accompanied by any net charge flow, in the transverse voltage probes. Its magnitude can be tuned by the Rashba spin-orbit (SO) interaction and, moreover, it is resilient to weak spin-independent scattering off impurities within the metallic diffusive regime. While the polarization vector of the spin transported through the transverse leads is not orthogonal to the plane of 2DEG, we demonstrate that only two components (out-of-plane and longitudinal) of the transverse spin current are signatures of the spin Hall effect in four-probe Rashba spin-split semiconductor nanostructures. The linear response spin Hall current, obtained from the multiprobe Landauer-B\" uttiker scattering formalism generalized for quantum transport of spin, is the Fermi-surface determined nonequilibrium quantity whose scaling with the 2DEG size $L$ reveals the importance of processes occurring on the spin precession {\em mesoscale} $L_{\rm SO}$ (on which spin precesses by an angle $\pi$)--the out-of-plane component of the transverse spin current exhibits quasioscillatory behavior for $L \lesssim L_{\rm SO}$ (attaining the maximum value in 2DEGs of the size $L_{\rm SO} \times L_{\rm SO}$), while it reaches the asymptotic value in the macroscopic regime $L \gg L_{\rm SO}$. Furthermore, these values of the spin Hall current can be manipulated by the measuring geometry defined by the attached leads.

We study the relaxation of a spin density injected into a two-dimensional electron system with generic spin-orbit interactions. Our model includes the Rashba as well as linear and cubic Dresselhaus terms. We explicitly derive a general spin-charge coupled diffusion equation. Spin diffusion is characterized by just two independent dimensionless parameters which control the interplay between different spin-orbit couplings. The real-time representation of the diffuson matrix (Green's function of the diffusion equation) is evaluated analytically. The diffuson describes space-time dynamics of the injected spin distribution. We explicitly study two regimes: The first regime corresponds to negligible spin-charge coupling and is characterized by standard charge diffusion decoupled from the spin dynamics. It is shown that there exist several qualitatively different dynamic behaviors of the spin density, which correspond to various domains in the spin-orbit coupling parameter space. We discuss in detail a few interesting phenomena such as an enhancement of the spin relaxation times, real space oscillatory dynamics, and anisotropic transport. In the second regime, we include the effects of spin-charge coupling. It is shown that the spin-charge coupling leads to an enhancement of the effective charge diffusion coefficient. We also find that in the case of strong spin-charge coupling, the relaxation rates formally become complex and the spin/charge dynamics is characterized by real time oscillations. These effects are qualitatively similar to those observed in spin-grating experiments [Weber et al., Nature 437, 1330 (2005)].

We theoretically propose a graphene-based adiabatic quantum pump with intrinsic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) subject to strain where two time-dependent extrinsic spin-orbit coupled barriers drive spin and charge currents. We study three differing operation modes where i) location, ii) chemical potential, and iii) SOC of the two barriers oscillate periodically and out of phase around their equilibrium states. Our results demonstrate that the amplitude of adiabatically pumped currents highly depends on the considered operation mode. We find that such a device operates with highest efficiency and in a broader range of parameters where the barriers chemical potential drives the quantum pump. Our results also reveal that by introducing strain to the system, one can suppress or enhance the charge and spin currents separately, depending on strain direction.

Substantial fluxes of protons and leptons with energies below the geomagnetic cutoff have been measured by the AMS experiment at altitudes of 370-390 Km, in the latitude interval +/- 51.7 degrees. The production mechanisms of the observed trapped fluxes are investigated in detail by means of the FLUKA Monte Carlo simulation code. All known processes involved in the interaction of the cosmic rays with the atmosphere (detailed descriptions of the magnetic field and atmospheric density, as well as the electromagnetic and nuclear interaction processes) are included in the simulation. The results are presented and compared with the experimental data, indicating good agreement with the observed fluxes. The impact of secondary proton flux on particle production in atmosphere is briefly discussed.

AMS-02 is a high precision magnetic spectrometer for cosmic rays in the GeV to TeV energy range. Its tracker consists of nine layers of double-sided silicon microstrip sensors. They are used to locate the trajectories of cosmic rays in the 0.14 T field of a cylindrical magnet, thus measuring their rigidity $p/Z$ and charge sign. In addition, they deliver a high resolution measurement of the absolute charge $|Z|$. The detector has been designed to operate in space with a position resolution of about 10 $\mu$m for each hit and charge identification capabilities up to $Z=26$. In this talk I describe the performance in orbit of this detector component and its impact on the overall performance of the spectrometer.

The list of quantum mechanical systems with non-Abelian statistics has recently been expanded by including generic spin-orbit-coupled semiconductors e.g., InAs) in proximity to a s-wave superconductor. Demonstration of the anyonic statistics using Majorana fermion interferometry in this system is a necessary first step towards topological quantum computation (TQC). However, since all isolated chiral edges that can be created in the semiconductor are charge neutral, it is not clear if electrically controlled interferometry is possible in this system. Here we show that when two isolated chiral Majorana edges are brought into close contact, the resultant interface supports charge current, enabling electrically controlled Majorana fermion interferometry in the semiconductor structure. Such interferometry experiments on the semiconductor are analogous to similar interferometry experiments on the $\nu=5/2$ fractional quantum Hall systems and on the surface of a 3D strong topological insulator, illustrating the usefulness of the 2D semiconductor heterostructure as a suitable TQC platform. In particular, we proposed Majorana interferometers may be the most direct method for establishing non-Abelian braiding statistics in topological superconductors.

We study graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with armchair edges in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction (RSOI). We impose the boundary conditions on the tight binding Hamiltonians for bulk graphene with RSOI by means of a sine transform and study in detail the influence of RSOI on the spectra and the spin polarization. We show that the spin polarization perpendicular to the GNR changes sign when reversing the momentum along the GNR if the bands are coupled by strong RSOI. Furthermore, we derive a linearized approximation to the RSOI Hamiltonian and find that only the neighboring modes of an energy band have to be taken into account in order to achieve a good approximation for the same band. Due to their experimental availability and various proposals for engineering appropriate RSOI, GNRs with armchair edges are a promising candidate for possible spintronics applications.

Within the scheme of random phase approximation, we classify collective modes based on the symmetry group and determine their properties via the poles of corresponding correlation functions. Besides, the particle-hole continuum is obtained, where the imaginary part of these correlation functions become non-vanishing. We make comparisons with collective excitations in the ordinary Fermi liquid without spin-orbit coupling and in a helical liquid, i.e., surface states of a three dimensional topological insulator. We also propose an experimental protocol for detecting these collective modes and discuss corresponding experimental signatures in the ultracold Fermi gases experiment.

Within an effective Dirac theory the low-energy dispersions of monolayer graphene in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling and spin-degenerate bilayer graphene are described by formally identical expressions. We explore implications of this correspondence for transport by choosing chiral tunneling through pn and pnp junctions as a concrete example. A real-space Green's function formalism based on a tight-binding model is adopted to perform the ballistic transport calculations, which cover and confirm previous theoretical results based on the Dirac theory. Chiral tunneling in monolayer graphene in the presence of Rashba coupling is shown to indeed behave like in bilayer graphene. Combined effects of a forbidden normal transmission and spin separation are observed within the single-band n to p transmission regime. The former comes from real-spin conservation, in analogy with pseudospin conservation in bilayer graphene, while the latter arises from the intrinsic spin-Hall mechanism of the Rashba coupling.

We study the T=0 Kondo physics of a spin-1/2 impurity in a non-centrosymmetric metal with spin-orbit interaction. Within a simple variational approach we compute ground state properties of the system for an {\it arbitrary} form of spin-orbit coupling consistent with the crystal symmetry. This coupling produces an unscreened impurity magnetic moment and can lead to a significant change of the Kondo energy. We discuss implications of this finding both for dilute impurities and for heavy-fermion materials without inversion symmetry.

The gravitational waves and energy radiations from a spinning compact object with stellar mass in a circular orbit in the equatorial plane of a supermassive Kerr black hole are investigated in this paper. The effect how the spin acts on energy and angular moment fluxes is discussed in detail. The calculation results indicate that the spin of small body should be considered in waveform-template production for the upcoming gravitational wave detections. It is clear that when the direction of spin axes is the same as the orbitally angular momentum ("positive" spin), spin can decrease the energy fluxes which radiate to infinity. For antidirection spin ("negative"), the energy fluxes to infinity can be enlarged. And the relations between fluxes (both infinity and horizon) and spin look like quadratic functions. From frequency shift due to spin, we estimate the wave-phase accumulation during the inspiraling process of the particle. We find that the time of particle inspiral into the black hole is longer for positive spin and shorter for negative compared with the nonspinning particle. Especially, for extreme spin value, the energy radiation near the horizon of the extreme Kerr black hole is much more than that for the nonspinning one. And consequently, the maximum binging energy of the extreme spinning particle is much larger than that of the nonspinning particle.

We analyze theoretically optical generation of a spin-polarized charge current (photogalvanic effect) and spin polarization in graphene with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. An external magnetic field is applied in the graphene plane, which plays a crucial role in the mechanism of current generation. We predict a highly efficient resonant-like photogalvanic effect in a narrow frequency range which is determined by the magnetic field. A relatively less efficient photogalvanic effect appears in a broader frequency range, determined by the electron concentration and spin-orbit coupling strength.

We investigate the fractionalized Skyrmion excitations induced by spin-orbit coupling in rotating and rapidly quenched spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates. Our results show that the fractionalized Skyrmion excitation depends on the combination of spin-orbit coupling and rotation, and it originates from a dipole structure of spin which is always embedded in three vortices constructed by each condensate component respectively. When spin-orbit coupling is larger than a critical value, the fractionalized Skyrmions encircle the center with one or several circles to form a radial lattice, which occurs even in the strong ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic condensates. We can use both the spin-orbit coupling and the rotation to adjust the radial lattice. The realization and the detection of the fractionalized Skyrmions are compatible with current experimental technology.

We consider infinitely long electromagnetic wave guide filled with a ferrite. The wave guide has arbitrary but constant cross-section $. We show that Maxwell equations are equivalent to the Schr\"odinger equation for single electron in the two-dimensional quantum dot of the form D with account of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction. The spin-orbit constant is determining by components of magnetic permeability of the ferrite. The upper component of electron spinor function corresponds to the z-th component electric field, while the down component $\chi$ related to the z-th component of magnetic field by relation (30).

In the book, the narrator, William Guest, falls asleep after returning from a meeting of the Socialist League and awakes to find himself in a future society based on common ownership and democratic control of the means of production. In this society there is no private property, no big cities, no authority, no monetary system, no divorce, no courts, no prisons, and no class systems. This agrarian society functions simply because the people find pleasure in nature, and therefore they find pleasure in their work.
