In this project, I examine the role of cognitive reflection (that is the extent to which an individual is likely to suppress their spontaneous intuition and engage in higher order cognition) may explain this rise both in terms of attitudes and voting behaviour. To do this, I will field an original survey with a sample of approximately 1,000 respondents representative of the UK population. In doing so, I will avail of the cognitive reflection test (CRT) as a measure of cognitive reflection (Frederick, 2005) while measuring populist attitudes using an eight-item scale proposed Van Hauwaert and Van Kessel (2018) and measuring populist voting behaviour using the results of a conjoint analysis. The CRT is composed of three questions which are designed to prompt an intuitive but incorrect answer, whereas the correct answer demands more careful thinking. In designing the questions this way, it is possible to observe which mode of thinking an individual has used when attempting to solve the question. For example, A bat and a ball cost £1.10 in total. The bat costs £1.00 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost? Here, the intuitive answer that comes to mind is £0.10. However, it takes a moment of reflection to realise that if this were true, the bat would cost £1.10 and together, the bat and ball would cost £1.20. Therefore, given the conditions set out in the question, the ball cannot cost £0.10 and it is up to the respondent to reason the correct answer of £0.05. For this survey I will ask respondents the CRT in a randomised order along with two decoy questions. Like the CRT, the decoy questions are also intended to prompt an intuitive answer from the respondent. However in contrast to the CRT, these intuitive responses are indeed correct. These decoy questions are used in additional robustness tests in lieu of the actual CRT scores as placebo. Once responses from the CRT (and decoys) are collected, I will code correct responses 1 and incorrect responses 0. In additional robustness checks, I will recode these 1 for all unintuitive responses, and 0 for all intuitive ones (thus excluding respondents who did not give any of these two responses). After the data has been coded, I will then aggregate the responses into a single measure of reflectiveness using an item response theory graded response model. Such a specification can account for differences in the difficulty associated with each item and thus construct a measure of reflectiveness as a latent variable. Measuring attitudes, the scale proposed by Van Hauwart and Van Kessel will be applied with respondents being asked to respond to each of the eight items on a five-point Likert scale (with an option to indicate “Don’t know”). Once this data are collected, I will combine these responses into a single measure of populism, using an item response theory graded response model, similar to that described above. On this constructed latent variable, I will estimate the marginal effect of a one-unit increase of the respondent’s CRT score using a series of OLS regressions with and without controls for the respondent’s demographic characteristics. To assess populist voting behaviour, I adopt the conjoint design first used by Bakker et al. (2021). In this design, respondents are faced with two hypothetical candidates with attributes randomly determined across a set of political relevant dimensions. Of particular interest for this study are the following dimensions and their associated attributes: i) anti-establishment sentiment, ii) people centrism, and iii) conflict/cooperation. These dimensions represent multiple facets of populism and can be used to assess its appeal. For each of these dimensions, there are two attributes: one populist and one non-populist. For each set of two attributes, one is randomly attributed with equal probability and independent of any other factors. In addition, a number of attributes associated with dimensions unrelated to populism are also presented with each candidate. These pertain to immigration, taxation, and personal background and will be presented (along with the populist dimensions) in a randomised order. Presented with two candidates, each with a full list of attributes as described above, the respondent is then asked from whom they would vote for in a hypothetical election between the two. From this, the respondent’s vote choice and the attributes associated with each candidate are recorded and used for analysis. I will repeat this process three times. Once these data are collected, I will run a series of OLS regressions to estimate the determinants of the linear probability of a respondent’s vote choice in this hypothetical scenario. In particular, I will estimate the interaction between a candidate’s populist attributes and the respondent’s CRT score. In doing so, I will be able to estimate the marginal component effect of populist attributes (anti-elitist, people-centric, and conflict seeking) on candidate vote choice at different levels of cognitive reflection. For robustness, I will do this with and without controlling for the remaining randomly determined attributes . Moreover, I will cluster the standard error of these estimates by the individual respondent.

In this paper we consider the design of spectrally efficient time-limited pulses for ultrawideband (UWB) systems using an overlapping pulse position modulation scheme. For this we investigate an orthogonalization method, which was developed in 1950 by Per-Olov L\"owdin. Our objective is to obtain a set of N orthogonal (L\"owdin) pulses, which remain time-limited and spectrally efficient for UWB systems, from a set of N equidistant translates of a time-limited optimal spectral designed UWB pulse. We derive an approximate L\"owdin orthogonalization (ALO) by using circulant approximations for the Gram matrix to obtain a practical filter implementation. We show that the centered ALO and L\"owdin pulses converge pointwise to the same Nyquist pulse as N tends to infinity. The set of translates of the Nyquist pulse forms an orthonormal basis or the shift-invariant space generated by the initial spectral optimal pulse. The ALO transform provides a closed-form approximation of the L\"owdin transform, which can be implemented in an analog fashion without the need of analog to digital conversions. Furthermore, we investigate the interplay between the optimization and the orthogonalization procedure by using methods from the theory of shift-invariant spaces. Finally we develop a connection between our results and wavelet and frame theory.

We aim to understand how social distancing and self-isolation due to COVID-19 affects people with Parkinson’s and whether these effects are similar to those without Parkinson’s. In particular, some people with Parkinson’s report that they have problems stopping themselves from engaging in problematic behaviours (e.g. overeating, gambling; “impulse control behaviours” ) or making impulsive choices and we want to understand how these may be affected by social isolation. We are also interested in levels of anxiety and apathy (common in Parkinson’s) and the extent to which they have withdrawn socially. Some people with Parkinson’s experience impulse control behaviours (ICBs), such as problem gambling, hypersexuality, compulsive shopping, excessive eating and hobbyism. Approximately 10-15% of people with Parkinson’s have an ICB, which is thought to be as a direct result of dopamine agonist medication (taken to manage other Parkinson's symptoms).The cumulative incidence of ICBs in patients that take dopamine agonists could be as high as 51%, and in patients that do not take dopamine agonists prevalence (12.4%) is still higher than in the general population (1.1-1.6%). We want to understand how ICB's may be affected by social isolation due to COVID-19. Of course, due to the unique nature of the pandemic, these effects have not been studied previously. There is evidence to suggest that anxiety has an effect on impulsivity and ICBs. During the current situation (COVID-19 and social isolation), anxiety may be higher than normal, and therefore ICBs may be affected. This study will also look at the effect of social isolation and COVID-19 on people without Parkinson's. In addition, to being of particular interest in the current pandemic, we anticipate that the findings will lead to a greater understanding of the factors that may underlie control of impulsive behaviours, anxiety and social interaction in people with Parkinson’s. More broadly, this is a unique opportunity to gain understanding as to the relationship between social withdrawal and well-being in Parkinson's. The study will also allow further analysis in the future as the data will be uploaded to an open data repository. In addition, to being of particular interest in the current pandemic, we anticipate that the findings will lead to a greater understanding of the factors that may underlie control of impulsive behaviours, anxiety and social interaction in people with Parkinson’s. More broadly, this is a unique opportunity to gain understanding as to the relationship between social withdrawal and well-being in Parkinson's. In this paper we report the results of simulations of a 2D gravity driven, dissipative granular flow through a hopper system. Measurements of impulse distributions P(I) on the simulated system show flow-velocity-invariant behavior of the distribution for impulses larger than the average impulse . For small impulses, however, P(I) decreases significantly with flow velocity, a phenomenon which can be attributed exclusively to collisions between grains undergoing frequent collisions. Visualizations of the system also show that these frequently colliding particles tend to form increasingly large linear clusters as the flow velocity decreases. A model is proposed for the form of P(I), given distributions of cluster size and velocity, which accurately predicts the observed form of the distribution. Thus the impulse distribution provides some insight into the formation and properties of these ``dynamic'' force chains.

The present paper deals with existence and uniqueness of global mild solutions for the 2D Navier-Stokes equations with impulses. Using the framework of nonautonomous dynamical systems, we extend previous results considering the 2D Navier-Stokes equations with impulse effects and allowing that the nonlinear terms are explicitly time-dependent. A computer code is reported which calculated the impulse response for long-range acoustic paths in SOFAR (Sound Fixing and Ranging) channels. Surface and bottom reflections are included. A single sound speed profile is treated and the bottom depth is allowed to be range-dependent. The impulse response is calculated from geometrical ray theory. It included transmission loss, travel time, arrival angle, and bottom loss. The source may be located on the upper or lower boundary. This report provides gunner head acceleration data from the live firing of 105 mm and 152 mm turret guns on the M-551 and M-60 tanks. The head accelerations were measured with a gunner volunteer and with an anthropomorphic dummy with stationary tanks. The head acceleration values ranged from 4 Gs in the heavy M-60 tank up to 14 Gs in the light M-551 tank. A comparison of these acceleration levels to the known human tolerance data indicates no problem for single exposures for most gunners, but it is possible that some gunners will experience headaches and neck strain. The effect of repeated exposures at the 14 G level is not known and further research is recommended.

This report gives the results of a noise-impact attitudinal survey done in the Fort Bragg/Fayetteville, NC, area. It shows that to the extent normal sources like airplanes fit an energy model (such as the day/night average sound level (DNL), impulse noise also fits an energy model. The growth of annoyance levels in a community with increases of loudness occurs similarly for impulse noise and for aircraft and helicopters. The growth of annoyance in a community with increases in the frequency of occurrence of events occurs in a similar way for all noises, except that the integration period for impulse noise apparently extends down to 'once every few months,' whereas annoyance all but dies away for other noises when the frequency of occurrence drops this low. All types of noise sources have roughly the same nighttime noise penalty -- 7 to 10 dB. C-weighting is the best available standard measure; a C-weighted DNL (CDNL) which includes no threshold or impulse correction factor offers the best model to describe community response. To establish an equivalency between CDNL levels used to assess impulse noise and A-weighted DNL (ADNL) levels used to assess other noise, it is necessary to find a common denominator. It is recommended that the percent of the community 'highly annoyed' in a given noise climate be that common denominator. With this common denominator, about 6 dB must be added to the numerical value of the CDNL level. (Author)

An interactive computer program was developed that enables the user to design linear phase, finite impulse response, linear shift-invariant, two-dimensional digital filters. The program user can design lowpass, highpass, bandpass, bandstop, all-pass, and multiband two-dimensional digital filters. The filters designed by using the program are nearly optimal in the Chebyshev sense. The technique implemented in the program consists of transforming a one-dimensional digital filter into a two-dimensional digital filter by a change of variables. This technique was first proposed by James H. McClellan and is called the McClellan Transformation. The program user can elect to utilize either the first order or the second order McClellan Transformation to design a two-dimensional digital filter.

This article uses experimental methods from the two areas of frequency-domain and time-domain to investigate electromagnetic scattering associated with targets coated with wave absorbent materials. Results clearly show that UWB signals have a 10-12dB advantage coping with targets coated with wave absorbent materials as compared to the narrow band signals of conventional radar. The explanation is that ultra wide waveband signals clearly possess excellent capabilities for countering narrow band wave absorbent materials.

The paper deals with the impulse on a concave wall resulting from the reflection of the spherical blast wave of an explosion in air. This situation arises when a spherical blast wave hits a non-planar surface, such as the wall of a containment vessel. Two types of surfaces are considered, cylindrical and spherical, in addition to the standard plane wall. The work is based on computations with the PISCES two-dimensional flow code, employing second order numerical schemes. The results for the plane surface are compared with the compiled experimental data in the literature. The study was carried out for a 2 Kg TNT charge at a distance of 1 m from the surface, assuming that the radii of the cylinder or sphere are also 1 meter. It was found that the reflected impulse on a cylindrical surface is approx. 18% over the plane wall case. For a spherical wall the reflected impulse (for the first shock reverberation) is about 50% over the plane wall impulse.

Explosive welds were conducted with various combinations of aluminum and steel varying plate thicknesses, different configurations, several explosives at various concentrations and atmospheres of various types. Framing camera, flash x-ray collapsible velocity probes and manganin wire pressure gages were used to record position-time data, velocities and pressures. Welded specimens were tested destructively and nondestructively to measure weld tensile and shear strength, metallographic data, and ultrasonic characteristics. Test results were correlated with welding variables. Data were analyzed, for correlation with parameters. Models were developed to predict flyer plate response and weld interface response during welding. Weld quality (tensile strength) for a given material was found to be primarily a function of collision point velocity, collision angle and flyer plate thickness. These parameters can be optimized to consistently achieve weld tensile strength in excess of parent metal strength by considering four criteria; (1) The critical collision angle for jet formation, (2) The critical impact velocity (or pressure) for jet formation in the subsonic regime, (3) The critical collision point transition velocity, and (4) The kinetic energy of the flyer plate versus the heat dissipation characteristics of the collision region. A comparison is made between the use of deterministic and random signals for estimating the impulse response of a linear system. It is shown that the two methods are essentially identical, and that in particular, the random signal method has no advantage from the viewpoint of suppressing the effects of uncorrelated interference. A general-purpose test facility for determining the one-dimensional compression characteristics of soils subjected to impulse-type loads has been developed in order to help satisfy the ever-increasing demand for reliable soil- property data required in support of a wide variety of nuclear-weapons-effects- related problems. The design, fabrication, installation, and evaluation of the various elements which together comprise the test facility were accomplished. The various considerations involved in the design and evaluation of the newly developed test facility are discussed in detail, thus providing some insight into the types of factors which affect the experimental-accuracy capability of a one-dimensional compression test facility and thereby the reliability of the data obtained under any particular set of conditions.

Methods are described for calculating specific impulses of propellant mixtures. The capacity of the computer (Burroughs 220) and the availability of thermodynamic data place practical restrictions on what systems can be calculated. The calculations center around the method of White, Johnson, and Dantzig for determining the equilibrium compositions of complex mixtures. By developing and applying matrix equations which describe both the thermodynamic data and the physical equations, the programming effort was reduced. Required input data to the program are the composition of the reaction mixture, the chamber and exit pressures, and a rough estimate of the chamber temperature. All other pertinent data are retrieved from magnetic tape by the computer program. A large number of problems may be solved without manual intervention. In addition to the specific impulse, the program calculates the characteristic velocity, the chamber and exit temperatures, compositions, enthalpies and entropies.
