Today we are joined by Allan Downey, Associate Professor of History and Indigenous Studies at McMaster University, and author of The Creator's Game: Lacrosse, Identity, and Indigenous Nationhood (University of British Columbia Press, 2018). In our conversation, we discussed the origins of lacrosse, the cultural genocide of North America's indigenous nations, and the games use as a site of empowerment and resistance.In The Creator's Game, Downey examines the role that lacrosse played and continues to play in the construction of settler-colonial and indigenous identity in Canada. He illustrates the way that the Canadian settler-colonial state appropriated the indigenous tradition of lacrosse to help promote white, masculine identities in the 19th century and how First Nation's people used the game at the same time to reassert their own notions of indigenous identity, including ideas of pan-indigeneity and nested sovereignty.Downey's work relies upon a wide range of sources including archival documents, extensive secondary source materials, and oral histories. He also makes use of indigenous epistemologies, taking seriously creation stories, medicine rituals, and the orenta power of physical objects. Throughout he mobilizes new methodologies as a way of explaining the special role of lacrosse among indigenous communities, including writing his own subjectivity as an indigenous person and lacrosse player into his history with chapter framing conversations with the trickster/transformer Usdas.Keith Rathbone is a lecturer at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. He researches twentieth-century French social and cultural history. His manuscript, entitled A Nation in Play: Physical Culture, the State, and Society during France's Dark Years, 1932-1948, examines physical education and sports in order to better understand civic life under the dual authoritarian systems of the German Occupation and the Vichy Regime. This study explores how therapists' and clients' gender identities (trans vs. non-trans) influence psychology students' perceptions of therapist effectiveness and willingness to work with clients. Participants will complete an anonymous 15-minute online survey. After providing consent, they will read a baseline therapy vignette (gender-neutral) and answer an attention check, followed by assessments of the therapist's effectiveness and willingness to work with the client. They will then be randomly assigned to one of four vignettes featuring different therapist-client gender pairings and complete the same measures. The study will also assess social desirability, attitudes toward trans individuals, prior contact with trans people, and knowledge of trans topics. Demographics will be collected, followed by a reflection on the study’s purpose and a debriefing. This research aims to uncover biases among future mental health professionals to inform educational interventions and promote inclusive, affirming therapeutic practices for all gender identities.

Past research has studied social identity threat, or the negative expectation of aversive treatment based on one’s own group membership (Major & Schmader, 2018). Both individuals with minority and majority social identities have been found to experience identity-threat in quantitative work (Scheepers et al., 2009). Qualitative research, however has gone beyond hierarchically-organized group dynamics, considering how political orientation, with a far more egalitarian balance of social power, may result in similar feelings of threat (Powers et al., 2019). Political identity threat, or the anticipation of negative judgment on the basis of political ideology, was more pronounced in social media than in-person interactions (Powers et al., 2019). This finding has not seen quantitative replication, and so the present work will explore this form of identity threat experimentally to validate these findings and explore the mechanisms and associations underlying it. In the present work, we examine whether polarizing language from a coworker directed to one’s political in-group (i.e., conservative or liberal) may result in experiencing political identity threat. We are also curious how this may differ between settings, particularly between virtual (on a company messaging platform) and in-person interactions (in an office breakroom). H1: Negatively-charged political statements will elicit more political identity threat than negatively-charged apolitical statements, especially when such statements are communicated in a virtual (vs. In person) setting. Trawalter and colleagues (2009) propose a variation of a model developed by Lazarus and Folkman (1984) to explain how individuals may engage in coping responses during interracial interactions. Specifically, Trawalter and colleagues argue that stress experienced in such interactions results in responses of antagonism, avoidance, freezing, or engagement (2009). In line with this model, Taylor and colleagues (2021) developed measures of antagonism, avoidance, and freezing, finding that all three were more strongly endorsed by Black participants who were experimentally induced to experience a negative racially-salient event. It is likely, then, that a negative politically-salient event would have similar consequences, though this has yet to be empirically tested. H2: Exposure to negatively-charged political statements will result in greater engagement in coping strategies than exposure to negatively-charged apolitical statements, especially when such statements are communicated in a virtual (vs. In person) setting. Anderson and colleagues (2025) examined how perspectives of individual political outgroup members varied based on the political diversity of their friend networks. Their second study found that participants expected to be perceived as more warm and competent by political-outgroup members with political friendship diversity than political outgroup members with an ideologically homogenous friend network (Anderson et al., 2025). This demonstrates that metaperceptions may vary based on factors communicating the salience of an interlocutor’s oppositional political affiliation, such that the presentation of more extreme commitment was associated with worse metaperceptions among participants. In line with this, we expect that a politically-charged statement from an outgroup member would provoke more negative metaperceptions than apolitical statements. H3: Exposure to negatively-charged political statements will result in more negative metaperceptions than exposure to negatively-charged apolitical statements, especially when such statements are communicated in a virtual (vs. In person) setting.

The present study examines the discrepancy between preferred and received compliments, with a particular focus on gender differences in the over- or undersupply of appearance-based compliments. Situational contexts, feminist identity beliefs, and political orientations are assessed as moderating factors. By exploring potential moderating factors of compliment discrepancy, we can develop a better understanding of the impact of compliments on self-perception.

This study is part of a larger project that is developing a scale to measure perceived research applicability (PRA), which is a new concept that we define as being the extent to which people perceive research results as applying to themselves personally. In our previous studies, we found that higher PRA predicted higher behavioral intentions both at the within- and between-person levels. However, we found mixed evidence about whether race or socioeconomic status (SES) is associated with PRA. A major limitation of our previous studies is that they were conducted in undergraduate student samples, which lacked demographic diversity in several aspects. The current study replicates these past studies using a participant sample recruited from the platform Prolific, which shows greater age diversity compared to undergraduate samples. Prolific also allows us to purposefully recruit a diverse sample using quota sampling. Namely, we aim to use quota sampling to recruit people across different parental education levels, which we expect will likely produce a sample that is diverse in SES, race, and education level. We also extend our previous research by examining subjective health, education level, and open-text qualitative responses.

Abstract Anatomical structures with similar appearance may at times be confused for each other. This situation can be compounded by lack of normal anatomical planes. We did ureterocalicostomy on a 32-year-female with secondary pelvi-ureteral junction obstruction. Post-operatively, it was discovered that she had a long appendix running parallel to ureter in retroperitoneum, which was misidentified as ureter and anastomosed to the lower pole of the kidney. She was re-explored, appendix was removed, ureter was identified and ureterocalicostomy was done. Patient is asymptomatic at 1 year follow-up.

The book is a series of short stories which take place in New York City in the early years of the 20th century and are representative of the surprise endings that popularized O. Henry’s work. He is quoted as once saying, “There are stories in everything. The true unselfish love that the characters, Jim and Della, share is greater than their possessions.<br /><br /> O. During the period of debate over the ratification of the Constitution, numerous independent local speeches and articles were published all across the country. Initially, many of the articles in opposition were written under pseudonyms, such as "Brutus", "Centinel", and "Federal Farmer". Eventually, famous revolutionary figures such as Patrick Henry came out publicly against the Constitution. They argued that the strong national government proposed by the Federalists was a threat to the rights of individuals and that the President would become a king. They objected to the federal court system created by the proposed constitution. This produced a phenomenal body of political writing; the best and most influential of these articles and speeches were gathered by historians into a collection known as the Anti-Federalist Papers in allusion to the Federalist Papers. Spiritual and practical lessons are extracted from every verse of the Book of Matthew, as well as detailed explanation of the text. The Book of Matthew is part of the New Testament in the Holy Bible and is one of the four gospels. The other 3 gospels are Mark, Luke, and John. Matthew was a tax collector before becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ. The style of his gospel suggests that he was directing his message to Jewish readers. His work aims to systematically prove that Jesus Christ is the messiah who has been prophesied about in the Old Testament. He did this by revealing each prophecy in that book fulfilled by Jesus Christ. There are twenty five stories of various lengths including several of his best known works such as "The Gift of the Magi" and "The Cop and the Anthem". The book's title refers to the then population of New York City where many of the stories are set. Some society snobs has the opinion that there were only 'Four Hundred' people in New York City who were really worth noticing. But O. Henry felt that every person in New York was worth noticing and had their own story which is explains the title of this collection little stories of the 'Four Million.'" To O.
