Exercise is generally associated with physical and psychological health benefits, but many individuals engage in maladaptive exercise (e.g., compulsive or addictive in nature). Although maladaptive exercise is common across the human condition, it is difficult to define and exercise scales vary in respect to what they emphasize. Assuming homogeneity in scales that may measure very different constructs contributes to a lack of consensus in etiological models of maladaptive exercise behavior and falls short in informing screening and prevention efforts. The current study used a Jaccard Index to analyze and quantify the content overlap of self-report scales commonly used to measure maladaptive exercise. We focus on the assessment of exercise in the context of eating pathology.
