1Two-dimensional, Homogeneous, Isotropic Fluid Turbulence With Polymer Additives

By

We present the most extensive direct numerical simulations, attempted so far, of statistically steady, homogeneous, isotropic turbulence in two-dimensional fluid films with air-drag-induced friction and with polymer additives. Our study reveals that the polymers (a) reduce the total fluid energy, enstrophy, and palinstrophy, (b) modify the fluid energy spectrum both in inverse- and forward-cascade regimes, (c) reduce small-scale intermittency, (d) suppress regions of large vorticity and strain rate, and (e) stretch in strain-dominated regions. We compare our results with earlier experimental studies; and we propose new experiments.

2On The Velocity Distribution In Homogeneous Isotropic Turbulence: Correlations And Deviations From Gaussianity

By

We investigate the single-point probability density function of the velocity in three-dimensional stationary and decaying homogeneous isotropic turbulence. To this end we apply the statistical framework of the Lundgren-Monin-Novikov hierarchy combined with conditional averaging, identifying the quantities that determine the shape of the probability density function. In this framework the conditional averages of the rate of energy dissipation, the velocity diffusion and the pressure gradient with respect to velocity play a key role. Direct numerical simulations of the Navier-Stokes equation are used to complement the theoretical results and assess deviations from Gaussianity.

3A Schur Decomposition Reveals The Richness Of Structure In Homogeneous, Isotropic Turbulence As A Consequence Of Localised Shear

By

An improved understanding of turbulence is essential for the effective modelling and control of industrial and geophysical processes. Homogeneous, isotropic turbulence (HIT) is the archetypal field for developing turbulence physics theory. Based on the Schur transform, we introduce an additive decomposition of the velocity gradient tensor into a normal part (containing the eigenvalues) and a non-normal or shear-related tensor. We re-interrogate some key properties of HIT and show that the the tendency of the flow to form disc-like structures is not a property of the normal tensor; it emerges from an interaction with the non-normality. Also, the alignment between the vorticity vector and the second eigenvector of the strain tensor is another consequence of local shear processes.

4Manifestations Of Drag Reduction By Polymer Additives In Decaying, Homogeneous, Isotropic Turbulence

By

The existence of drag reduction by polymer additives, well established for wall-bounded turbulent flows, is controversial in homogeneous, isotropic turbulence. To settle this controversy we carry out a high-resolution direct numerical simulation (DNS) of decaying, homogeneous, isotropic turbulence with polymer additives. Our study reveals clear manifestations of drag-reduction-type phenomena: On the addition of polymers to the turbulent fluid we obtain a reduction in the energy dissipation rate, a significant modification of the fluid energy spectrum especially in the deep-dissipation range, a suppression of small-scale intermittency, and a decrease in small-scale vorticity filaments.

5The Universality Of Dynamic Multiscaling In Homogeneous, Isotropic Turbulence

By

We systematise the study of dynamic multiscaling of time-dependent structure functions in different models of passive-scalar and fluid turbulence. We show that, by suitably normalising these structure functions, we can eliminate their dependence on the origin of time at which we start our measurements and that these normalised structure functions yield the same linear bridge relations that relate the dynamic-multiscaling and equal-time exponents for statistically steady turbulence. We show analytically, for both the Kraichnan Model of passive-scalar turbulence and its shell model analogue, and numerically, for the GOY shell model of fluid turbulence and a shell model for passive-scalar turbulence, that these exponents and bridge relations are the same for statistically steady and decaying turbulence. Thus we provide strong evidence for dynamic universality, i.e., dynamic-multiscaling exponents do not depend on whether the turbulence decays or is statistically steady.

6Studies Of Shock Wave Interactions With Homogeneous And Isotropic Turbulence

By

A nearly homogeneous nearly isotropic compressible turbulent flow interacting with a normal shock wave has been studied experimentally in a large shock tube facility. Spatial resolution of the order of 8 Kolmogorov viscous length scales was achieved in the measurements of turbulence. A variety of turbulence generating grids provide a wide range of turbulence scales. Integral length scales were found to substantially decrease through the interaction with the shock wave in all investigated cases with flow Mach numbers ranging from 0.3 to 0.7 and shock Mach numbers from 1.2 to 1.6. The outcome of the interaction depends strongly on the state of compressibility of the incoming turbulence. The length scales in the lateral direction are amplified at small Mach numbers and attenuated at large Mach numbers. Even at large Mach numbers amplification of lateral length scales has been observed in the case of fine grids. In addition to the interaction with the shock the present work has documented substantial compressibility effects in the incoming homogeneous and isotropic turbulent flow. The decay of Mach number fluctuations was found to follow a power law similar to that describing the decay of incompressible isotropic turbulence. It was found that the decay coefficient and the decay exponent decrease with increasing Mach number while the virtual origin increases with increasing Mach number. A mechanism possibly responsible for these effects appears to be the inherently low growth rate of compressible shear layers emanating from the cylindrical rods of the grid.

7Clustering And Preferential Concentration Of Finite-size Particles In Forced Homogeneous-isotropic Turbulence

By

We have performed interface-resolved direct numerical simulations of forced homogeneous-isotropic turbulence in a dilute suspension of spherical particles in the Reynolds number range Re-lambda=115-140. The solid-fluid density ratio was set to 1.5, gravity was set to zero, and two particle diameters were investigated corresponding to approximately 5 and 11 Kolmogorov lengths. Note that these particle sizes are clearly outside the range of validity of the point-particle approximation, as has been shown by Homann & Bec (2010). At the present parameter points the global effect of the particles upon the fluid flow is weak. We observe that the dispersed phase exhibits clustering with moderate intensity. The tendency to cluster, which was quantified in terms of the standard deviation of Voronoi cell volumes, decreases with the particle diameter. We have analyzed the relation between particle locations and the location of intense vortical flow structures. The results do not reveal any significant statistical correlation. Contrarily, we have detected a small but statistically significant preferential location of particles with respect to the `sticky points' proposed by Goto & Vassilicos (2008), i.e. points where the fluid acceleration field is acting such as to increase the local particle concentration in one-way coupled point-particle models under Stokes drag. The presently found statistical correlation between the `sticky points' and the particle locations further increases when focusing on regions with high local concentration. Our results suggest that small finite-size particles can be brought together along the expansive directions of the fluid acceleration field, as previously observed only for the simplest model for sub-Kolmogorov particles. We further discuss the effect of density ratio and collective particle motion upon the basic Eulerian and Lagrangian statistics.

8High-order Methods For Decaying Two-dimensional Homogeneous Isotropic Turbulence

By

Numerical schemes used for the integration of complex flow simulations should provide accurate solutions for the long time integrations these flows require. To this end, the performance of various high-order accurate numerical schemes is investigated for direct numerical simulations (DNS) of homogeneous isotropic two-dimensional decaying turbulent flows. The numerical accuracy of compact difference, explicit central difference, Arakawa, and dispersion-relation-preserving schemes are analyzed and compared with the Fourier-Galerkin pseudospectral scheme. In addition, several explicit Runge-Kutta schemes for time integration are investigated. We demonstrate that the centered schemes suffer from spurious Nyquist signals that are generated almost instantaneously and propagate into much of the field when the numerical resolution is insufficient. We further show that the order of the scheme becomes increasingly important for increasing cell Reynolds number. Surprisingly, the sixth-order schemes are found to be in perfect agreement with the pseudospectral method. Considerable reduction in computational time compared to the pseudospectral method is also reported in favor of the finite difference schemes. Among the fourth-order schemes, the compact scheme provides better accuracy than the others for fully resolved computations. The fourth-order Arakawa scheme provides more accurate results for under-resolved computations, however, due to its conservation properties. Our results show that, contrary to conventional wisdom, difference methods demonstrate superior performance in terms of accuracy and efficiency for fully resolved DNS computations of the complex flows considered here. For under-resolved simulations, however, the choice of difference method should be made with care.

9Cascade Time-scales For Energy And Helicity In Homogeneous Isotropic Turbulence

By

We extend the Kolmogorov phenomenology for the scaling of energy spectra in high-Reynolds number turbulence, to explicitly include the effect of helicity. There exists a time-scale $\tau_H$ for helicity transfer in homogeneous, isotropic turbulence with helicity. We arrive at this timescale using the phenomenological arguments used by Kraichnan to derive the timescale $\tau_E$ for energy transfer (J. Fluid Mech. {\bf 47}, 525--535 (1971)). We show that in general $\tau_H$ may not be neglected compared to $\tau_E$, even for rather low relative helicity. We then deduce an inertial range joint cascade of energy and helicity in which the dynamics are dominated by $\tau_E$ in the low wavenumbers with both energy and helicity spectra scaling as $k^{-5/3}$; and by $\tau_H$ at larger wavenumbers with spectra scaling as $k^{-4/3}$. We demonstrate how, within this phenomenology, the commonly observed ``bottleneck'' in the energy spectrum might be explained. We derive a wavenumber $k_h$ which is less than the Kolmogorov dissipation wavenumber, at which both energy and helicity cascades terminate due to dissipation effects. Data from direct numerical simulations are used to check our predictions.

10Homogeneous Isotropic Fluid Turbulence Simulated With The Lattice Vortex Tube Model

By

Fully developed turbulence is analised with the lattice model employing vortex tube representation which is introduced recently by the authors. Several characteric features observed in experiments and direct numeric integrations are reproduced. Not only Kolmogorov's inertial range is observed, but also several local probability distribution functions are obtained as well. Those of the local velocities are close to the Gaussian and exponential-like distributions appear in local vorticity, relative velocities and local velocity consisting of only higher wave number components. Coherent structure of vortex tubes is seen, too. Moreover required cpu-time and memory-size are very little comparing with the conventional pseudo-spectral method. keywords : fluid turbulence, vortex tube, lattice model, numerical technic.

It is argued that the low-Reynolds number results in the subject paper are not congruous with the data of Ling and Huang, and that the spectral transfer should be less local.

12Homogeneous Isotropic Superfluid Turbulence In Two Dimensions: Inverse And Forward Cascades In The Hall-Vinen-Bekharevich-Khalatnikov Model

By

We present the first direct-numerical-simulation study of the statistical properties of two-dimensional superfluid turbulence in the Hall-Vinen-Bekharevich-Khalatnikov two-fluid model. We show that both normal-fluid and superfluid energy spectra can exhibit two power-law regimes, the first associated with an inverse cascade of energy and the second with the forward cascade of enstrophy. We quantify the mutual-friction-induced alignment of normal and superfluid velocities by obtaining probability distribution functions of the angle between them and the ratio of their moduli. Our study leads to specific suggestions for experiments.

13An Exact Expression For The Reynolds Number Dependence Of The Energy Dissipation Rate In Homogeneous, Isotropic Turbulence

By

The Reynolds number dependence of the dimensionless dissipation rate is derived directly from the Karman-Howarth equation in terms of the inverse of the integral scale Reynolds number and a coefficient which depends on the second- and third-order structure functions. Fitting this form to the results from a direct numerical simulation indicates that the coefficient is effectively constant.

14Homogeneous Isotropic Turbulence In Dilute Polymers: Scale By Scale Budget

By

The turbulent energy cascade in dilute polymers solution is addressed here by considering a direct numerical simulation of homogeneous isotropic turbulence of a FENE-P fluid in a triply periodic box. On the basis of the DNS data, a scale by scale analysis is provided by using the proper extension to visco-elastic fluids of the Karman-Howarth equation for the velocity. For the microstructure, an equation, analogous to the Yaglom equation for scalars, is proposed for the free-energy density associated to the elastic behavior of the material. Two mechanisms of energy removal from the scale of the forcing are identified, namely the classical non-linear transfer term of the standard Navier-Stokes equations and the coupling between macroscopic velocity and microstructure. The latter, on average, drains kinetic energy to feed the dynamics of the microstructure. The cross-over scale between the two corresponding energy fluxes is identified, with the flux associated with the microstructure dominating at small separations to become sub-leading above the cross-over scale, which is the equivalent of the elastic limit scale defined by De Gennes-Tabor on the basis of phenomenological assumptions.

15Condensation Of Cloud Microdroplets In Homogeneous Isotropic Turbulence

By

The growth by condensation of small water droplets in a three-dimensional homogeneous isotropic turbulent flow is considered. Within a simple model of advection and condensation, the dynamics and growth of millions of droplets are integrated. A droplet-size spectra broadening is obtained and it is shown to increase with the Reynolds number of turbulence, by means of two series of direct numerical simulations at increasing resolution. This is a key point towards a proper evaluation of the effects of turbulence for condensation in warm clouds, where the Reynolds numbers typically achieve huge values. The obtained droplet-size spectra broadening as a function of the Reynolds number is shown to be consistent with dimensional arguments. A generalization of this expectation to Reynolds numbers not accessible by DNS is proposed, yielding upper and lower bounds to the actual size-spectra broadening. A further DNS matching the large scales of the system suggests consistency of the picture drawn, while additional effort is needed to evaluate the impact of this effect for condensation in more realistic cloud conditions.

16NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19950014628: Pressure And Higher-order Spectra For Homogeneous Isotropic Turbulence

By

The spectra of the pressure, and other higher-order quantities including the dissipation, the enstrophy, and the square of the longitudinal velocity derivative are computed using data obtained from direct numerical simulation of homogeneous isotropic turbulence at Taylor-Reynolds numbers R(sub lambda) in the range 38 - 170. For the pressure spectra we find reasonable collapse in the dissipation range (of the velocity spectrum) when scaled in Kolmogorov variables and some evidence, which is not conclusive, for the existence of a k(exp -7/3) inertial range where k = absolute value of K, is the modulus of the wavenumber. The power spectra of the dissipation, the enstrophy, and the square of the longitudinal velocity derivative separate in the dissipation range, but appear to converge together in the short inertial range of the simulations. A least-squares curve-fit in the dissipation range for one value of R(sub lambda) = 96 gives a form for the spectrum of the dissipation as k(exp 0)exp(-Ck eta), for k(eta) greater than 0.2, where eta is the Kolmogorov length and C is approximately equal to 2.5.

17The Effect Of The Basset History Force On Particle Clustering In Homogeneous And Isotropic Turbulence

By

We study the effect of the Basset history force on the dynamics of small particles transported in homogeneous and isotropic turbulence and show that this term, often neglected in previous numerical studies, reduces the small-scale clustering typical of inertial particles. The contribution of this force to the total particle acceleration is, on average, responsible for about 10% of the total acceleration and particularly relevant during rare strong events. At moderate density ratios, i.e. sand or metal powder in water, its presence alters the balance of forces determining the particle acceleration.

18Systematics Of The Magnetic-Prandtl-number Dependence Of Homogeneous, Isotropic Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence

By

We present the results of our detailed pseudospectral direct numerical simulation (DNS) studies, with up to $1024^3$ collocation points, of incompressible, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in three dimensions, without a mean magnetic field. Our study concentrates on the dependence of various statistical properties of both decaying and statistically steady MHD turbulence on the magnetic Prandtl number ${\rm Pr_M}$ over a large range, namely, $0.01 \leq {\rm Pr_M} \leq 10$. We obtain data for a wide variety of statistical measures such as probability distribution functions (PDFs) of moduli of the vorticity and current density, the energy dissipation rates, and velocity and magnetic-field increments, energy and other spectra, velocity and magnetic-field structure functions, which we use to characterise intermittency, isosurfaces of quantities such as the moduli of the vorticity and current, and joint PDFs such as those of fluid and magnetic dissipation rates. Our systematic study uncovers interesting results that have not been noted hitherto. In particular, we find a crossover from larger intermittency in the magnetic field than in the velocity field, at large ${\rm Pr_M}$, to smaller intermittency in the magnetic field than in the velocity field, at low ${\rm Pr_M}$. Furthermore, a comparison of our results for decaying MHD turbulence and its forced, statistically steady analogue suggests that we have strong universality in the sense that, for a fixed value of ${\rm Pr_M}$, multiscaling exponent ratios agree, at least within our errorbars, for both decaying and statistically steady homogeneous, isotropic MHD turbulence.

19Multi-Scale Turbulence Injector: A New Tool To Generate Intense Homogeneous And Isotropic Turbulence For Premixed Combustion

By

Nearly homogeneous and isotropic, highly turbulent flow, generated by an original multi-scale injector is experimentally studied. This multi-scale injector is made of three perforated plates shifted in space such that the diameter of their holes and their blockage ratio increase with the downstream distance. The Multi-Scale Turbulence Injector (hereafter, MuSTI) is compared with a Mono-Scale Turbulence Injector (MoSTI), the latter being constituted by only the last plate of MuSTI. This comparison is done for both cold and reactive flows. For the cold flow, it is shown that, in comparison with the classical mono-scale injector, for the MuSTI injector: (i) the turbulent kinetic energy is roughly twice larger, and the kinetic energy supply is distributed over the whole range of scales. This is emphasized by second and third order structure functions. (ii) the transverse fluxes of momentum and energy are enhanced, (iii) the homogeneity and isotropy are reached earlier ($\approx 50$%), (iv) the jet merging distance is the relevant scaling length-scale of the turbulent flow, (v) high turbulence intensity ($\approx 15$%) is achieved in the homogeneous and isotropic region, although the Reynolds number based on the Taylor microscale remains moderate ($Re_\lambda \approx 80$). In a second part, the interaction between the multi-scale generated turbulence and the premixed flame front is investigated by laser tomography. A lean V-shaped methane/air flame is stabilised on a heated rod in the homogeneous and isotropic region of the turbulent flow. The main observation is that the flame wrinkling is hugely amplified with the multi-scale generated injector, as testified by the increase of the flame brush thickness.

20Self-Similar Solutions In The Homogeneous Isotropic Turbulence

By

We calculate the self-similar longitudinal velocity correlation function, the energy spectrum and the corresponding other properties using a theory on the isotropic homogeneous turbulence just presented by the author in a previous work. The correlation functions correspond to steady-state solutions of the evolution equation under the self-similarity hypothesis introduced by von K\'arm\'an. These solutions are numerically calculated and the results adequately describe several properties of the isotropic turbulence.

21On The Dissipation Rate Coefficient In Homogeneous Isotropic Decaying And Forced Turbulence

By

The normalized non-dimensional von K\'arm\'an-Howarth equation for isotropic homogeneous decaying and forced steady turbulence is integrated to obtain expressions for the dissipation rate coefficient $C_{\epsilon}=(L \epsilon)/ < u^2 >^{3/2}$, where $L$ denotes the longitudinal integral length scale, $\epsilon$ the mean dissipation rate and $ < u^2 >$ the mean variance of the longitudinal velocity fluctuations. For decaying turbulence the final exact expressions for $C_{\epsilon}$ for the low and high Reynolds number limit depend on the decay exponent $n$, which is known to depend on the initial velocity structure at the turbulence production. The dependence on $n$ leads to a non-universal coefficient. The expressions for the steady forced case depend on the forcing mechanism and thus are not universal either. Nonetheless, a lower value and considerably less scatter as compared to the decaying turbulence case should be expected when similiar forcing algorithms are employed.

22On The Behavior Of Homogeneous, Isotropic And Stationary Turbulence

By

The recent development of a statistical model for incompressible Navier-Stokes (NS) fluids based on inverse kinetic theory (IKT, 2004-2008) poses the problem of searching for particular realizations of the theory which may be relevant for \textit{the statistical description of turbulence} and in particular for the so-called \textit{homogeneous, isotropic}and \textit{stationary} turbulence (HIST). Here the problem is set in terms of the $1-$point velocity probability density function (PDF) which determines a complete IKT-statistical model for NS fluids. This raises the interesting question of identifying the statistical assumptions under which a Gaussian PDF can be achieved in such a context. In this paper it is proven that for the IKT statistical model, HIST requires necessarily that $f_{1}$ must be SIED (namely \textit{stationary}, \textit{isotropic} and \textit{% everywhere-defined}). This implies, in turn, that the functional form of the PDF is uniquely prescribed at all times. In particular, it is found that necessarily the PDF must coincide with an isotropic Gaussian distribution. The conclusion is relevant for the investigation of the so-called homogenous, isotropic and stationary turbulence.

23Lagrangian Statistics Of Particle Pairs In Homogeneous Isotropic Turbulence

By

We present a detailed investigation of the particle pair separation process in homogeneous isotropic turbulence. We use data from direct numerical simulations up to Taylor's Reynolds number 280 following the evolution of about two million passive tracers advected by the flow over a time span of about three decades. We present data for both the separation distance and the relative velocity statistics. Statistics are measured along the particle pair trajectories both as a function of time and as a function of their separation, i.e. at fixed scales. We compare and contrast both sets of statistics in order to gain an insight into the mechanisms governing the separation process. We find very high levels of intermittency in the early stages, that is, for travel times up to order ten Kolmogorov time scales. The fixed scale statistics allow us to quantify anomalous corrections to Richardson diffusion in the inertial range of scales for those pairs that separate rapidly. It also allows a quantitative analysis of intermittency corrections for the relative velocity statistics.

By

Numerical simulations of decaying homogeneous isotropic turbulence are performed with both low-order and high-order spatial discretization schemes. The turbulent Mach and Reynolds numbers for the simulations are 0.2 and 250, respectively. For the low-order schemes we use either second-order central or third-order upwind biased differencing. For higher order approximations we apply weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) schemes, both with linear and nonlinear weights. There are two objectives in this preliminary effort to investigate possible schemes for large eddy simulation (LES). One is to explore the capability of a widely used low-order computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code to perform LES computations. The other is to determine the effect of higher order accuracy (fifth, seventh, and ninth order) achieved with high-order upwind biased WENO-based schemes. Turbulence statistics, such as kinetic energy, dissipation, and skewness, along with the energy spectra from simulations of the decaying turbulence problem are used to assess and compare the various numerical schemes. In addition, results from the best performing schemes are compared with those from a spectral scheme. The effects of grid density, ranging from 32 cubed to 192 cubed, on the computations are also examined. The fifth-order WENO-based scheme is found to be too dissipative, especially on the coarser grids. However, with the seventh-order and ninth-order WENO-based schemes we observe a significant improvement in accuracy relative to the lower order LES schemes, as revealed by the computed peak in the energy dissipation and by the energy spectrum.

25Lyapunov Analysis Of Homogeneous Isotropic Turbulence

By

The present work studies the isotropic and homogeneous turbulence for incompressible fluids through a specific Lyapunov analysis, assuming that the turbulence is due to the bifurcations associated to the velocity field. The analysis consists in the study of the mechanism of the energy cascade from large to small scales through the Lyapunov analysis of the relative motion between two particles and in the calculation of the velocity fluctuation through the Lyapunov analysis of the local deformation and the Navier-Stokes equations. The analysis provides an explanation for the mechanism of the energy cascade, leads to the closure of the von K\'arm\'an-Howarth equation, and describes the statistics of the velocity difference. Several tests and numerical results are presented.

26Internal Stresses And Breakup Of Rigid Isostatic Aggregates In Homogeneous And Isotropic Turbulence

By

By characterising the hydrodynamic stresses generated by statistically homogeneous and isotropic turbulence in rigid aggregates, we estimate theoretically the rate of turbulent breakup of colloidal aggregates and the size distribution of the formed fragments. The adopted method combines Direct Numerical Simulation of the turbulent field with a Discrete Element Method based on Stokesian dynamics. In this way, not only the mechanics of the aggregate is modelled in detail, but the internal stresses are evaluated while the aggregate is moving in the turbulent flow. We examine doublets and cluster-cluster isostatic aggregates, where the failure of a single contact leads to the rupture of the aggregate and breakup occurs when the tensile force at a contact exceeds the cohesive strength of the bond. Due to the different role of the internal stresses, the functional relationship between breakup frequency and turbulence dissipation rate is very different in the two cases. In the limit of very small and very large values, the frequency of breakup scales exponentially with the turbulence dissipation rate for doublets, while it follows a power law for cluster-cluster aggregates. For the case of large isostatic aggregates it is confirmed that the proper scaling length for maximum stress and breakup is the radius of gyration. The cumulative fragment distribution function is nearly independent of the mean turbulence dissipation rate and can be approximated by the sum of a small erosive component and a term that is quadratic with respect to fragment size.

28DTIC ADA280005: A Numerical Investigation Of Energy Transfer And Subgrid-Scale Eddy Viscosity In Homogeneous, Isotropic And Shear Turbulence.

By

Numerical solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations for a 3-D, time- dependent, highly-symmetric flow have been completed. An effective resolution of up to 10243 collocation points (341 modes after dealiasing) is attained within the memory on the 256 MW CRAY-2 at Kirtland AFB and the C90 at the Pittsburgh Supercomputer Center. These simulations constitutes the highest resolution runs made to date. One of the primary purposes of the work was to create a data base from which a detailed energy transfer and triad analysis could be made by Andrzej Domaradzki at USC. The data base has been made, and runs for Reynolds numbers of 500, 1000, 2000 and 5000 have been stored on tape. We shall give some information concerning the turbulent flows later in this report. The other purpose of this work is to try to understand the transition process through which the flow becomes turbulent. Our early-time analysis of the data base of runs was concerned with this problem, and hence most of this report will deal with our findings. We also attach a manuscript on this subject that will be published shortly in The Physics of Fluids. Turbulent flows, Transition, Numerical simulation.

29Dependence Of Decaying Homogeneous Isotropic Turbulence On Initial Conditions

We conduct a careful analysis of the data provided by Krogstad & Davidson (2011) and show that their data do not support their conclusions. According to their published data, their decaying approximately homogeneous isotropic turbulent flows are, invariably, clearly different from Saffman turbulence; and very clearly marked differences exist between the far downstream turbulence behaviors generated by their conventional grid and by their multiscale cross grids.

30Self-Similarity In Fully Developed Homogeneous Isotropic Turbulence Using The Lyapunov Analysis

By

In this work, we calculate the self-similar longitudinal velocity correlation function and the statistical properties of velocity difference using the results of the Lyapunov analysis of the fully developed isotropic homogeneous turbulence just presented by the author in a previous work (arXiv:0911.1463). There, a closure of the von Karman-Howarth equation is proposed and the statistics of velocity difference is determined through a specific analysis of the Fourier-transformed Navier-Stokes equations. The correlation functions correspond to steady-state solutions of the von Karman-Howarth equation under the self-similarity hypothesis introduced by von Karman. These solutions are numerically determined with the statistics of velocity difference. The obtained results adequately describe the several properties of the fully developed isotropic turbulence.

31Lagrangian Cascade In Three-Dimensional Homogeneous And Isotropic Turbulence

In this work, the scaling statistics of the dissipation along Lagrangian trajectories are investigated by using fluid tracer particles obtained from a high resolution direct numerical simulation with $Re_{\lambda}=400$. Both the energy dissipation rate $\epsilon$ and the local time averaged $\epsilon_{\tau}$ agree rather well with the lognormal distribution hypothesis. Several statistics are then examined. It is found that the autocorrelation function $\rho(\tau)$ of $\ln(\epsilon(t))$ and variance $\sigma^2(\tau)$ of $\ln(\epsilon_{\tau}(t))$ obey a log-law with scaling exponent $\beta'=\beta=0.30$ compatible with the intermittency parameter $\mu=0.30$. The $q$th-order moment of $\epsilon_{\tau}$ has a clear power-law on the inertial range $10

32Comparison Of The LBE And DUGKS Methods For DNS Of Decaying Homogeneous Isotropic Turbulence

By

The main objective of this work is to perform a detailed comparison of the lattice Boltzmann equation (LBE) and the recently developed discrete unified gas-kinetic scheme (DUGKS) methods for direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the decaying homogeneous isotropic turbulence (DHIT) in a periodic box. The flow fields and key statistical quantities computed by both methods are compared with those from pseudo-spectral (PS) method. The results show that the LBE and DUGKS have almost the same accuracy when the flow field is well-resolved, and that the LBE is less dissipative and is slightly more efficient than the DUGKS, but the latter has a superior numerical stability, particularly for high Reynolds number flows. Therefore, the DUGKS method can be viewed as a viable tool for DNS of turbulent flows. It should be emphasized that the main advantage of the DUGKS when compared with the LBE method is its feasibility in adopting nonuniform meshes, which is critical for wall-bounded turbulent flows. The present work provides a basis for further applications of DUGKS in studying the physics of the turbulent flows.

33Introduction Of Longitudinal And Transverse Lagrangian Velocity Increments In Homogeneous And Isotropic Turbulence

By

Based on geometric considerations, longitudinal and transverse Lagrangian velocity increments are introduced as components along, and perpendicular to, the displacement of fluid particles during a time scale {\tau}. It is argued that these two increments probe preferentially the stretching and spinning of material fluid elements, respectively. This property is confirmed (in the limit of vanishing {\tau}) by examining the variances of these increments conditioned on the local topology of the flow. Interestingly, these longitudinal and transverse Lagrangian increments are found to share some qualitative features with their Eulerian counterparts. In particular, direct numerical simulations at turbulent Reynolds number up to 300 show that the distributions of the longitudinal increment are negatively skewed at all {\tau}, which is a signature of time irreversibility of turbulence in the Lagrangian framework. Transverse increments are found more intermittent than longitudinal increments, as quantified by the comparison of their respective flatnesses and scaling laws. Although different in nature, standard Lagrangian increments (projected on fixed axis) exhibit scaling properties that are very close to transverse Lagrangian increments.

34Anomalous Scaling In Homogeneous Isotropic Turbulence

By

The anomalous scaling exponents $\zeta_{n}$ of the longitudinal structure functions $S_{n}$ for homogeneous isotropic turbulence are derived from the Navier-Stokes equations by using field theoretic methods to develop a low energy approximation in which the Kolmogorov theory is shown to act effectively as a mean field theory. The corrections to the Kolmogorov exponents are expressed in terms of the anomalous dimensions of the composite operators which occur in the definition of $S_{n}$. These are calculated from the anomalous scaling of the appropriate class of nonlinear Green's function, using an $uv$ fixed point of the renormalisation group, which thereby establishes the connection with the dynamics of the turbulence. The main result is an algebraic expression for $\zeta_{n}$, which contains no adjustable constants. It is valid at orders $n$ below $% g_{\ast}^{-1}$, where $g_{\ast}$ is the fixed point coupling constant. This expression is used to calculate $\zeta _{n}$ for orders in the range $% n=2$ to 10, and the results are shown to be in good agreement with experimental data, key examples being $\zeta_{2}=0.7$, $\zeta_{3}=1$ and $% \zeta_{6}=1.8$.

35NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19980039333: Studies Of Shock Wave Interactions With Homogeneous And Isotropic Turbulence

36NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19820003521: Mixing Of A Passive Scalar In Isotropic And Sheared Homogeneous Turbulence

By

In order to calculate the velocity and scalar fields, the three dimensional, time-dependent equations of motion and the diffusion equation were solved numerically. The following cases were treated: isotropic, homogeneous turbulence with decay of a passive scalar; and homogeneous turbulent shear flow with a passive scalar whose mean varies linearly in the spanwise direction. The solutions were obtained at relatively low Reynolds numbers so that all of the turbulent scales could be resolved without modeling. Turbulent statistics such as integral length scales, Taylor microscales, Kolmogorov length scale, one- and two-point correlations of velocity-velocity and velocity-scalar, turbulent Prandtl/Schmidt number, r.m.s. values of velocities, the scalar quantity and pressure, skewness, decay rates, and decay exponents were calculated. The results are compared with the available expermental results, and good agreement is obtained.

37DTIC ADA401480: The Eulerian Time Correlation Function In Homogeneous Isotropic Turbulence

By

Two general models are proposed for the Eulerian time correlation function in homogeneous isotropic turbulence. The first is based on continued fraction approximations to its Laplace transform, and the second is based on random sweeping by a possibly non-Gaussian velocity field. Both models can give reasonable quantitative agreement with DNS data for moderate time separations over which the time correlation functions at different wave numbers exhibit a common self-similar form.

38Rotation Rate Of Particle Pairs In Homogeneous Isotropic Turbulence

By

Understanding the dynamics of particles in turbulent flow is important in many environmental and industrial applications. In this paper, the statistics of particle pair orientation is numerically studied in homogeneous isotropic turbulent flow, with Taylor microscale Reynolds number of 300. It is shown that the Kolmogorov scaling fails to predict the observed probability density functions (PDFs) of the pair rotation rate and the higher order moments accurately. Therefore, a multifractal formalism is derived in order to include the intermittent behavior that is neglected in the Kolmogorov picture. The PDFs of finding the pairs at a given angular velocity for small relative separations reveals extreme events with stretched tails and high kurtosis values. Additionally, The PDFs are found to be less intermittent and follow a complementary error function distribution for larger separations.

39Finite Scale Lyapunov Analysis Of Temperature Fluctuations In Homogeneous Isotropic Turbulence

By

The study analyzes the temperature fluctuations in incompressible homogeneous isotropic turbulence through the finite scale Lyapunov analysis of the relative motion between two fluid particles. The analysis determines the temperature fluctuations through the Lyapunov theory of the local deformation, using the thermal energy equation. The study provides an explanation of the mechanism of temperature cascade, leads to the closure of the Corrsin equation, and describes the statistics of the longitudinal temperature derivative. The results here obtained show that, in the case of self-similarity of velocity and temperature correlations, the temperature spectrum exhibits the scaling laws $\kappa^n$, with $n \approx{-5/3}$, ${-1}$ and ${-17/3} \div -11/3$ depending upon the flow regime, and in agreement with the theoretical arguments of Obukhov--Corrsin and Batchelor and with the numerical simulations and experiments known from the literature. The longitudinal temperature derivative PDF is found to be a non-gaussian distribution function with null skewness, whose intermittency rises with the Taylor scale P\'eclet number. This study applies also to any passive scalar which exhibits diffusivity.

40Statistical Properties Of The Intrinsic Geometry Of Heavy-particle Trajectories In Two-dimensional, Homogeneous, Isotropic Turbulence

By

We obtain, by extensive direct numerical simulations, trajectories of heavy inertial particles in two-dimensional, statistically steady, homogeneous, and isotropic turbulent flows, with friction. We show that the probability distribution function $\mathcal{P}(\kappa)$, of the trajectory curvature $\kappa$, is such that, as $\kappa \to \infty$, $\mathcal{P}(\kappa) \sim \kappa^{-h_{\rm r}}$, with $h_{\rm r} = 2.07 \pm 0.09$. The exponent $h_{\rm r}$ is universal, insofar as it is independent of the Stokes number ($\rm{St}$) and the energy-injection wave number. We show that this exponent lies within error bars of their counterparts for trajectories of Lagrangian tracers. We demonstrate that the complexity of heavy-particle trajectories can be characterized by the number $N_{\rm I}(t,{\rm St})$ of inflection points (up until time $t$) in the trajectory and $n_{\rm I} ({\rm St}) \equiv \lim_{t\to\infty} \frac{N_{\rm I} (t,{\rm St})}{t} \sim {\rm St}^{-\Delta}$, where the exponent $\Delta = 0.33 \pm0.02$ is also universal.

41NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19950014629: Statistics Of Pressure And Pressure Gradient In Homogeneous Isotropic Turbulence

By

The statistics of pressure and pressure gradient in stationary isotropic turbulence are measured within direct numerical simulations at low to moderate Reynolds numbers. It is found that the one-point pdf of the pressure is highly skewed and that the pdf of the pressure gradient is of stretched exponential form. The power spectrum of the pressure P(k) is found to be larger than the corresponding spectrum P(sub G)(k) computed from a Gaussian velocity field having the same energy spectrum as that of the DNS field. The ratio P(k)/P(sub G)(k), a measure of the pressure-field intermittence, grows with wavenumber and Reynolds number as -R(sub lambda)(exp 1/2)log(k/k(sub d)) for k less than k(sub d)/2 where k(sub d) is the Kolmogorov wavenumber. The Lagrangian correlations of pressure gradient and velocity are compared and the Lagrangian time scale of the pressure gradient is observed to be much shorter than that of the velocity.

43NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19940010274: The Structure Of Intense Vorticity In Homogeneous Isotropic Turbulence

By

The structure of the intense vorticity regions is studied in numerically simulated homogeneous, isotropic, equilibrium turbulent flow fields at four different Reynolds numbers in the range Re(sub lambda) = 36-171. In accordance with previous investigators, this vorticity is found to be organized in coherent, cylindrical or ribbon-like, vortices ('worms'). A statistical study suggests that they are just especially intense features of the background, O(omega'), vorticity. Their radii scale with the Kolmogorov microscale and their lengths with the integral scale of the flow. An interesting observation is that the Reynolds number based on the circulation of the intense vortices, gamma/nu, increases monotonically with Re(sub lambda), raising the question of the stability of the structures in the limit of Re(sub lambda) approaching infinity. One and two-dimensional statistics of vorticity and strain are presented; they are non-gaussian, and the behavior of their tails depends strongly on the Reynolds number. There is no evidence of convergence to a limiting distribution in our range of Re(sub lambda), even though the energy spectra and the energy dissipation rate show good asymptotic properties in the higher Reynolds number cases. Evidence is presented to show that worms are natural features of the flow and that they do not depend on the particular forcing scheme.

44Direct Numerical Simulations Of Statistically Steady, Homogeneous, Isotropic Fluid Turbulence With Polymer Additives

By

We carry out a direct numerical simulation (DNS) study that reveals the effects of polymers on statistically steady, forced, homogeneous, isotropic fluid turbulence. We find clear manifestations of dissipation-reduction phenomena: On the addition of polymers to the turbulent fluid, we obtain a reduction in the energy dissipation rate, a significant modification of the fluid energy spectrum, especially in the deep-dissipation range, a suppression of small-scale intermittency, and a decrease in small-scale vorticity filaments. We also compare our results with recent experiments and earlier DNS studies of decaying fluid turbulence with polymer additives.

45Droplet Size Distribution In Homogeneous Isotropic Turbulence

By

We study the physics of droplet breakup in a statistically stationary homogeneous and isotropic turbulent flow by means of high resolution numerical investigations based on the multicomponent lattice Boltzmann method. We verified the validity of the criterion proposed by Hinze (1955) for droplet breakup and we measured the full probability distribution function (pdf) of droplets radii at different Reynolds numbers and for different volume fraction. By means of a Lagrangian tracking we could follow individual droplets along their trajectories, define a local Weber number based on the velocity gradients and study its cross-correlation with droplet deformation.

46Conditional Vorticity Budget Of Coherent And Incoherent Flow Contributions In Fully Developed Homogeneous Isotropic Turbulence

By

We investigate the conditional vorticity budget of fully developed three-dimensional homogeneous isotropic turbulence with respect to coherent and incoherent flow contributions. The Coherent Vorticity Extraction based on orthogonal wavelets allows to decompose the vorticity field into coherent and incoherent contributions, of which the latter are noise-like. The impact of the vortex structures observed in fully developed turbulence on statistical balance equations is quantified considering the conditional vorticity budget. The connection between the basic structures present in the flow and their statistical implications is thereby assessed. The results are compared to those obtained for large- and small-scale contributions using a Fourier decomposition, which reveals pronounced differences.

47DNS-based Measurement Of The Mean Impulse Response Of Homogeneous Isotropic Turbulence

By

A technique for measuring the mean impulse response function of stationary homogeneous isotropic turbulence is proposed. Such measurement is carried out here on the basis of Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS). A zero-mean white-noise volume forcing is used to probe the turbulent flow, and the response function is obtained by accumulating the space-time correlation between the white forcing and the velocity field. This technique to measure the turbulent response in a DNS numerical experiment is a new research tool in that field of spectral closures where the linear response concept is invoked either by resorting to renormalized perturbations theories or by introducing the well-known Fluctuation-Dissipation Relation (FDR). Though the results obtained in the present work are limited to relatively low values of the Reynolds number, a preliminary analysis is possible. Both the characteristic form and the time scaling properties of the response function are investigated in the universal subrange of dissipative wavenumbers; a comparison with the response approximation given by the FDR is proposed through the independent DNS measurement of the correlation function. Very good agreement is found between the measured response and Kraichnan's description of random energy-range advection effects.

48Homogeneous And Isotropic Turbulence: A Short Survey On Recent Developments

By

We present a detailed review of some of the most recent developments on Eulerian and Lagrangian turbulence in homogeneous and isotropic statistics. In particular, we review phenomenological and numerical results concerning the issue of universality with respect to the large scale forcing and the viscous dissipative physics. We discuss the state-of-the-art of numerical versus experimental comparisons and we discuss the dicotomy between phenomenology based on coherent structures or on statistical approaches. A detailed discussion of finite Reynolds effects is also presented.

49Helicity Statistics In Homogeneous And Isotropic Turbulence And Turbulence Models

By

We study the statistical properties of helicity in direct numerical simulations of fully developed homogeneous and isotropic turbulence and in a class of turbulence shell models. We consider correlation functions based on combinations of vorticity and velocity increments that are not invariant under mirror symmetry. We also study the scaling properties of high-order structure functions based on the moments of the velocity increments projected on a subset of modes with either positive or negative helicity (chirality). We show that mirror symmetry is recovered at small-scales, i.e., chiral terms are subleading and they are well captured by a dimensional argument plus anomalous corrections. These findings are also supported by a high Reynolds numbers study of helical shell models with the same chiral symmetry of Navier-Stokes equations.

50Developing Homogeneous Isotropic Turbulence

By

We investigate the self-similar evolution of the transient energy spectrum which precedes the establishment of the Kolmogorov spectrum in homogeneous isotropic turbulence in three dimensions using the EDQNM closure model. The transient evolution exhibits self-similarity of the second kind and has a non-trivial dynamical scaling exponent which results in the transient spectrum having a scaling which is steeper than the Kolmogorov $k^{-5/3}$ spectrum. Attempts to detect a similar phenomenon in DNS data are inconclusive owing to the limited range of scales available.
