The World Health Organisation (WHO), the European Parliament and Council, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement (the Movement), the International Society for Blood Transfusion (ISBT), and the European Blood Alliance (EBA), all advocate for blood donation to be a voluntary and non-remunerated act, emphasising that donors should not be coerced or compensated in a manner akin to payment (Farrugia and Del Bò, 2015). The International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) Code of Ethics, Clause 4.1.2 (page 5) states: “Blood donation including haematopoietic tissues for transplantation shall, in all circumstances, be voluntary and non-remunerated; no coercion should be brought to bear upon the donor. A donation is considered voluntary and non-remunerated if the person gives blood, plasma or cellular components of his/her own free will and receives no payment for it, either in the form of cash, or in kind which could be considered a substitute for money. This would include time off work other than that reasonably needed for the donation and travel. Small tokens, refreshments and reimbursements of direct travel costs are compatible with voluntary, non-remunerated donation.” Despite this stance, in the United States, various blood collection agencies offer significant incentives – ranging from lotteries to win large sums of cash, cars, glamorous holidays to tax rebates and attractive loyalty schemes etc. This practice starkly contrasts with those in other developed nations, such as the UK, where incentives are minimal (e.g., recognition badges or snacks) (Graf et al., 2023; Chell et al., 2018; Zeller et al., 2020). This disparity in practices between countries across the global north presents a significant ethical discrepancy that requires further research. In this research, we plan to conduct a short experiment to compare how the (i) general public in the UK and USA, as well as (ii) experts working within the field of blood donation from around the world, perceive current incentives used by blood collection agencies to incentivise whole blood donations. More specifically, the sample will include the general public sampled on Prolific (UK and USA), and (ii) an expert sample (members of ISBT, NHSBT, ABC, AABB, and other blood services or related professional bodies (e.g., Haematology) with appropriate qualifications or position with these types of organisations). These will be sampled through newsletters, email lists, conferences and workshops. This experiment is the first of several that aim to understand how current incentives used to encourage blood donation are perceived by various stakeholder groups around the world. We will explore a variety of donor incentives reported in the literature and used worldwide. These include extrinsically motivated rewards, which can be monetary (i.e., lotteries, loyalty schemes etc.) or non-monetary (i.e., non-cash gifts, thank you messages etc.) and are used to motivate blood donation. These incentives cover the broad categories and conceptualisation of incentive types as defined in the literature such as: (i) Chell et al. (2018) (e.g., Cash, travel compensation, charity donation, vouchers, discounts, tax relief, gifts, tickets, health check, appreciation, time off, reciprocity: and (ii) Chell et al. (2022) (e.g., deal promotions, loyalty programmes, BCA tokens, health checks, charity donations, travel compensation etc.)

A key challenge in understanding the feedback mechanism of AGN in Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) is the inherent rarity of catching an AGN during its strong outburst phase. This is exacerbated by the ambiguity of differentiating between AGN and clusters in X-ray observations. If there is evidence for an AGN then the X-ray emission is commonly assumed to be dominated by the AGN emission, introducing a selection effect against the detection of AGN in BCGs. In order to recover these 'missing' clusters, we systematically investigate the colour-magnitude relation around some ~3500 ROSAT All Sky Survey selected AGN, looking for signs of a cluster red sequence. Amongst our 22 candidate systems, we independently rediscover several confirmed systems, where a strong AGN resides in a central galaxy. We compare the X-ray luminosity to red sequence richness distribution of our AGN candidate systems with that of a similarly selected comparison sample of ~1000 confirmed clusters and identify seven 'best' candidates (all of which are BL Lac objects), where the X-ray flux is likely to be a comparable mix between cluster and AGN emission. We confirm that the colours of the red sequence are consistent with the redshift of the AGN, that the colours of the AGN host galaxy are consistent with AGN, and, by comparing their luminosities with those from our comparison clusters, confirm that the AGN hosts are consistent with BCGs.
