Abstract The mechanism of the effects of simulated heat waves on cardiovascular disease in senile mice was investigated. Heat waves were simulated in a TEM1880 meteorological environment simulation chamber, according to a heat wave that occurred in July 2001 in Nanjing, China. Eighteen senile mice were divided into control, heat wave, and heat wave BH4 groups, respectively. Mice in the heat wave and heat wave BH4 groups were exposed to simulated heat waves in the simulation chamber. The levels of ET-1, NO, HSP60, SOD, TNF, sICAM-1, and HIF-1α in each group of mice were measured after heat wave simulation. Results show that heat waves decreased SOD activity in the myocardial tissue of senile mice, increased NO, HSP60, TNF, sICAM-1, and HIF-1α levels, and slightly decreased ET-1 levels, BH4 can relieve the effects of heat waves on various biological indicators. After a comprehensive analysis of the experiments above, we draw the followings conclusions regarding the influence of heat waves on senile mice: excess HSP60 activated immune cells, and induced endothelial cells and macrophages to secrete large amounts of ICAM-1, TNF-α, and other inflammatory cytokines, it also activated the inflammation response in the body and damaged the coronary endothelial cell structure, which increased the permeability of blood vessel intima and decreased SOD activity in cardiac tissues. The oxidation of lipoproteins in the blood increased, and large amounts of cholesterol were generated. Cholesterol penetrated the intima and deposited on the blood vessel wall, forming atherosclerosis and leading to the occurrence of cardiovascular disease in senile mice. These results maybe are useful for studying the effects of heat waves on elderly humans, which we discussed in the discussion chapter.

Heat- and cold-wave scenarios and temperature scenarios during the 21st century were obtained for Aragón (Spain), using, for the first time, nine Earth System Models (ESM) and two Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) scenarios – RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 - belonging to the 5th Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5). Local climate heat-wave scenarios show an increase of its mean intensity close to 2 °C (reaching temperatures of up to 38.8 °C) and an average increase of the maximum intensity of 3.6 °C (temperature of up to 41.5 °C) with respect to a historic period (1971–2000) for the RCP8.5 scenario at the end of the century. The duration of heat waves will increase by 7 days at the end of the century (total average duration of 12 days). The future intensity and duration of cold-wave episodes will remain stable. Local climate change scenarios for daily maximum temperatures show a gradual increase throughout the 21st century. The greatest increases will occur during the summer at the end of the century, reaching values of up to 7 °C for the RCP 8.5 scenario. The minimum temperature increases show similar behaviours to the maximum temperatures, but with less marked increases (3 °C and 5.6 °C for the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios respectively in summer at the end of the century). The highest temperatures and the intensity of the heat waves will be especially intense in the Ebro Valley, the most populated area. In addition, the Pyrenees will suffer the longest heat waves, especially at the end of the century, and the greatest increases in maximum temperatures. The downscaling of the CMIP5 models, offers accurate scenarios -both spatially and temporally- of extreme temperatures and heat and cold waves, useful for decision-making for local adaptation to climate change but also as a reference for other European regions.

Heat waves and other extreme weather events have attracted a great deal of attention due to their socioeconomic impacts and relation to climate change. A heat wave is defined through a general loss function that captures its amplitude, temporal persistence, and spatial extent. The proposed statistical framework is at the nexus of extreme value theory (EVT) and functional data analysis (FDA) and enables computation of probabilities of yet unobserved rare events that are not seen in historical records. Data from the North American Regional Climate Change Assessment Program, which has produced computer model predictions of current and future temperatures across much of North America, are used. The approach allows for the computation of probabilities for heat waves of any pre-specified temporal duration, spatial extent, and overall magnitude. It can be applied to the computation of probabilities of other extreme weather events, including cold spells and droughts.

Analytic solutions for cylindrical thermal waves in solid medium is given based on the nonlinear hyperbolic system of heat flux relaxation and energy conservation equations. The Fourier-Cattaneo phenomenological law is generalized where the relaxation time and heat propagation coefficient have a general power law temperature dependence. From such laws one cannot form a second order parabolic or telegraph-type equation. We consider the original non-linear hyperbolic system itself with the self-similar Ansatz for the temperature distribution and for the heat flux. As results continuous and shock-wave solutions are presented. For physical establishment numerous materials with various temperature dependent heat conduction coefficients are mentioned.

In this week's climate change story, US Midwesterners are feeling the heat as temperatures rise to record-breaking levels. Nine of the 10 hottest years on record have happened since 1997, and scientists say if heat-trapping pollution isn't stopped these unbareable temperatures could become the norm.

Heat waves (HW) can have devastating social, economic and environmental impacts. Together with long-term drought, they are the main factors contributing to wildfires. Surprisingly, the quantitative and objective analysis leading to the identification and characterization of HW in current and future climate conditions as well as its influence on the occurrence of extreme wildfires (EW) has never been performed for Portugal and are the main objectives of this study. For this reason, we assess HW in recent past and future climate based on a consistent high resolution meteorological database and have compared their occurrence with long and reliable, precise and detailed information about Portuguese fire events. Results include the characterization of HW frequency, duration, seasonality and intensity for current and different future climate conditions and their relationship with EW occurrence. We detected 130 HW between 1981 and 2010, concentrated between May and October and highest values in July and August. The highest HW number and duration is found over the Northeast corner and the south of the country while highest amplitudes are typically located in central area. HW characteristics present high inter-annual variability but are clearly associated to the temporal and spatial distribution of EW: 97% of total number of EW were active during an HW, 90% of total EW days were also HW days; 82% of the EW had duration completely contained in the duration of an HW; and, 83% of EW occurred during and in the area affected by HW. Our results also show that HW should increase in number, duration and amplitude, more significantly for RCP 8.5, and for the 30-year periods near the end of the 21st century. Findings of this study will support the definition of climate change adaptation strategies for fire danger and risk management.

Introduction Temperature effects on human activities and natural processes are undeniable. Temperature increase, in particular, in the form of heat waves affects all facets of life including architecture, welfare, transport, agriculture and industry. When the intensity and frequency of the waves are high, they can produce major problems. In recent years, the number and intensity of these heat waves has been increased in the world, so that it is one of the major causes of atmosphere related mortality in many countries. The aim of this study is to analyze the temperatures above 40°C and specify their synoptic patterns in the west of Iran using statistical-synoptic method. Study area Study area in this paper consists of five western provinces of Iran, including Kermanshah, Kurdistan, Hamedan, Lorestan and Ilam. From the climatic point of view, southern and western parts of the region including Khorramabad and Ilam stations are placed in the outer foothills climatic zone, and the other parts of this region are placed in the mountainous zone. Western low altitude strip has a warmer climate; But the other parts because of having different altitudes and latitudes, have colder climate. Materials and methods To achieve the statistical-synoptic analysis of heat waves, the daily maximum temperature data of six synoptic stations of the region within a 32-year period (1976-2007), and the relevant synoptic maps were used in this study. Different criteria have been proposed for selecting a numerical threshold for defining the superhot temperatures and the occurrence of heat waves. In the present study, reaching a maximum daily temperature of 40°C and higher has been the basis for defining the heat wave based on the region's temperature characteristics. Accordingly in each of these stations the dates in which the maximum temperature had reached 40°C and above during all those years were extracted. Then, based on the January 1st, each calendar date was converted to Julian date, and after that, the different characteristics of these superhot days like start date, duration and frequency were analyzed. Next, heat waves were derived based on two criteria: incidence of 40°C temperature and above at least in three stations, and three consecutive day occurrence of the above mentioned conditions. The beginning day of each wave was defined as the day when the temperature has reached 40°C or higher at the desired stations for the first time in compliance with the above conditions, and, the end day was defined as the day when the temperature reached the mentioned threshold for the last time. To calculate the mean temperature of a specific wave, maximum temperatures equal to 40°C and above at the all stations on all days of the occurrence of heat wave were used. To study the synoptic occurrence of heat waves, various data including geopotential height, sea level pressure, surface temperature, 1000-500 hPa thickness and meridional wind component at 200-hPa level were taken from NOAA's Website. In the next step, different maps comprising mean sea level pressure and anomaly, 500-hPa geopotential height, warm air advection and 1000-500 hPa thickness were drawn using GrADS software. Results and discussion The assessment of maximum temperatures in the region resulted in the extraction of 27 heat waves. The usual date for the start of heat waves and rising the temperatures to 40°C or higher in the west of country is July 23. The highest frequency of heat waves in 1977 with 4 waves, the longest wave in 1995, continuing for 28 days, and the most severe wave in 1998 with an average temperature of 42.4°C has occurred. The average length of waves in the region was 10 days, with the range of 3 to 28 days. In the mentioned period, Khorramabad and Kermanshah stations with respectively an annual average of 22.5 and 13.4 days had the highest amounts of 40°C temperatures and above, and in terms of duration and severity were among the hottest points of the region. Kermanshah station had the maximum number of superhot days after Khorramabad due to the high altitude and thin atmosphere. In contrast, duration and intensity of heat waves in Hamedan station was the least in the region. The results obtained from the synoptic analysis of heat waves in the west of Iran showed that during the heat wave occurrences, warm and dry air from deserts of Saudi Arabia and northern Iraq has been drawn to the western half of Iran through low pressure air masses located over these two countries, and consequently, this influence is more sensible in the western and southern stations like Khorramabad and Kermanshah than other stations, such as Hamedan, Sanandaj and Saghez. In most of the studied hot waves, Azores subtropical high pressure extends as a belt from North Africa to Iran. 1000-500 hPa thickness maps showed that a warm air core is extended from Iraq to Egypt with southwest-northeast direction, and covers western half of the country. All in all, two synoptic patterns, one related to the strongest waves and the other near-normal waves were extracted. In the first pattern (near-normal waves) Azores subtropical high pressure creates a secondary high pressure over Saudi Arabia, and the deep trough which has been created in the West Urals, weakens the Saudi Arabian High. Thus subtropical systems move to more southern latitudes and consequently have less impact on the western half of the Iran. In the second pattern (strongest waves), Azores subtropical high pressure advances and expands over northern latitudes, up to about 35°N. In this pattern Azores high pressure belt covers the area from North Africa to Iran, and this way the stronger heat waves affect western half of Iran. Warm air advection maps too verify this status. So that the warm air advection amounts at 200-hPa over the Middle East are positive, which indicates the greater thickness of atmosphere compared to the usual state. As expected, from synoptic point of view, the occurrence of heat waves in the region has been simultaneous with thermal low pressure formation at the ground level and subtropical high pressure at the upper levels. The number of superhot days in the stations has increased on average at the rate of 2.06 days in the study period, which can be indicative of warming trend in the region. This warming trend is consistent with results of studies in Greece (Maheras et al, 2006: 161), United States of America (Bumbaco et al, 2013: 1618), Europe (Twardosz and Kossowska, 2013: 627), and Iran (Esmailnejad, 2014: 39; Darand, 2014: 167). Comparing the results of this study with other studies in the future will reveal the similarities or differences of statistical characteristics and synoptic patterns of heat waves in different parts of the country.

The interaction between vortex density waves and high-frequency second sound in counterflow superfluid turbulence is examined, incorporating diffusive and elastic contributions of the vortex tangle. The analysis is based on a set of evolution equations for the energy density, the heat flux, the vortex line density, and the vortex flux, the latter being considered here as an independent variable, in contrast to previous works. The latter feature is crucial in the transition from diffusive to propagative behavior of vortex density perturbations, which is necessary to interpret the details of high-frequency second sound.

The occurrence of extreme heat events in maximum and minimum daily temperatures is modelled using a non-homogeneous common Poisson shock process. It is applied to five Spanish locations, representative of the most common climates over the Iberian Peninsula. The model is based on an excess over threshold approach and distinguishes three types of extreme events: only in maximum temperature, only in minimum temperature and in both of them (simultaneous events). It takes into account the dependence between the occurrence of extreme events in both temperatures and its parameters are expressed as functions of time and temperature related covariates. The fitted models allow us to characterize the occurrence of extreme heat events and to compare their evolution in the different climates during the observed period. This model is also a useful tool for obtaining local projections of the occurrence rate of extreme heat events under climate change conditions, using the future downscaled temperature trajectories generated by Earth System Models. The projections for 2031-60 under scenarios RCP4.5, RCP6.0 and RCP8.5 are obtained and analysed using the trajectories from four earth system models which have successfully passed a preliminary control analysis. Different graphical tools and summary measures of the projected daily intensities are used to quantify the climate change on a local scale. A high increase in the occurrence of extreme heat events, mainly in July and August, is projected in all the locations, all types of event and in the three scenarios, although in 2051-60 the increase is higher under RCP8.5. However, relevant differences are found between the evolution in the different climates and the types of event, with a specially high increase in the simultaneous ones.

How Rising Temperatures Will Change Our Lives

Increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration [CO2] drives the rise in global temperatures, with predictions of an increased frequency of heat waves (short periods of high temperatures). Both, CO2 and high temperature, have profound effects on wheat growth and productivity. We tested whether elevated [CO2] (eCO2) has a potential to ameliorate the effects of simulated heat waves (HT) on wheat in a dryland cropping system. Wheat was field-grown at the Australian Grains Free Air CO2 Enrichment (AGFACE) facility under ambient [CO2] (∼390 ppm) or eCO2 (∼550 ppm) for two growing seasons, one with ample water supply and one of severe drought. Using heated chambers, heat waves (3-day periods of high temperatures) were imposed at critical growth stages before anthesis (HT1) or post-anthesis (HT2, HT3). Gas exchange, chlorophyll content and concentration of nitrogen (N) in mainstem flag leaves, as well as concentrations of stem water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC) in mainstems were monitored throughout the season. Yield, biomass and thousand kernel weights (TKW) were measured at maturity. Elevated [CO2] moderated the effect on net CO2 assimilation rates of pre-anthesis (HT1), but not of post-anthesis heat waves (HT2, HT3). Growth under eCO2 increased stem WSC both, with and without experimental heat waves, but remobilisation decreased significantly under heat indicating that a greater WSC pool does not necessarily translate into greater remobilisation into the grain. Grain yield (g m−2) was greater under eCO2 and especially pre-anthesis heat stress decreased grain yield in the wetter season, and this decrease was stronger under eCO2 (up to 20%) than under aCO2 (up to 10%). Grain N decreased under eCO2, but less so under heat stress. We conclude that eCO2 may moderate some effects of heat stress in wheat but such effects strongly depend on seasonal conditions and timing of heat stress.

Abstract Background: In many parts of the world, including in China, extreme heat events or heat waves are likely to increase in intensity, frequency, and duration in light of climate change in the next decades. Risk perception and adaptation behaviors are two important components in reducing the health impacts of heat waves, but little is known about their relationships in China. This study aimed to examine the associations between risk perception to heat waves, adaptation behaviors, and heatstroke among the public in Guangdong province, China. Methods: A total of 2,183 adult participants were selected using a four-stage sampling method in Guangdong province. From September to November of 2010 each subject was interviewed at home by a well-trained investigator using a structured questionnaire. The information collected included socio-demographic characteristics, risk perception and spontaneous adaptation behaviors during heat wave periods, and heatstroke experience in the last year. Chi-square tests and unconditional logistic regression models were employed to analyze the data. Results: This study found that 14.8%, 65.3% and 19.9% of participants perceived heat waves as a low, moderate or high health risk, respectively. About 99.1% participants employed at least one spontaneous adaptation behavior, and 26.2%, 51.2% and 22.6% respondents employed 7 adaptation behaviors during heat waves, respectively. Individuals with moderate (OR=2.93, 95% CI: 1.38-6.22) or high (OR=10.58, 95% CI: 4.74-23.63) risk perception experienced more heatstroke in the past year than others. Drinking more water and wearing light clothes in urban areas, while decreasing activity as well as wearing light clothes in rural areas were negatively associated with heatstroke. Numerous human and natural factors are involved in the creation of thermal islands. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was is to analyze the occurrence of heat wave in Abadan city and its impact on thermal islands. Heat waves were identified using the 95th percentile index and its application to daily maximum temperature data during the period 1985-2017. Among the heat waves that had occurred, two waves with more continuity during the hot and cold seasons of the years were selected and their satellite images were received from the MYD11A2 MODIS during the day and night. Then, using image processing techniques, Earth surface temperature map was extracted and used for determining thermal islands of Abadan city. Land use map with 4 land use classes was extracted from MOD12Q1 MODIS by supervised classification method. The results showed that the average incidence of hot flashes in each month of the year is between 3 and 8 waves. The most persistent heat waves occurred in the period of 6/11/2010 to 6/16/2010 and 19/3/2008 to 27/3/2008 with a duration of 6 and 8 days, respectively. Thermal islands in Abadan have specific spatial and temporal fluctuations and the surface temperature is higher in the warm season. The high temperature in barren lands is due to the increase of fuel consumption of 2 hours per day and in the industrial area due to the burning of fossil fuels and the production of polluting gases, which cause the greenhouse effect, heat intensification and, eventually, the high density of the heat islands and intensity of the effects of heat waves.

Abstract Heat waves are a public health concern in Australia and unprecedented heat waves have been recorded in Adelaide over recent years. The aim of this study was to examine the perception and attitudes towards heat waves in the context of climate change among a group of residents in Adelaide, an Australian city with a temperate climate. A cross-sectional study was conducted in the summer of 2012 among a sample of 267 residents. The results of the survey found that television (89.9%), radio (71.2%), newspapers (45.3%) were the main sources from which respondents received information about heat waves. The majority of the respondents (73.0%) followed news about heat waves very or somewhat closely. About 26.6% of the respondents were extremely or very concerned about the effects of heat waves on them personally. The main issues that were of personal concern for respondents during a heat wave were their personal comfort (60.7%), their garden (48.7%), and sleeping well (47.6%). Overall, respondents were more concerned about the impacts of heat waves to the society than on themselves. There was a significant association between gender (χ² = 21.2, df = 3, p = 0.000), gross annual household income (p = 0.03) and concern for the societal effects of heat waves. Less than half (43.2%) of the respondents believed that heat waves will extremely or very likely increase in Adelaide according to climate projections. Nearly half (49.3%) believed that the effects of heat waves were already being felt in Adelaide. These findings may inform the reframing and communication strategies for heat waves in Adelaide in the context of climate change.

The Russia heat wave and wild fires of the summer of 2010 was the most extreme weather event in the history of the country. Studies show that the root cause of the 2010 Russia heat wave/wild fires was an atmospheric blocking event which started to develop at the end of June and peaked around late July and early August. Atmospheric blocking in the summer of 2010 was anomalous in terms of the size, duration, and the location, which shifted to the east from the normal location. This and other similar continental scale severe summertime heat waves and blocking events in recent years have raised the question of whether such events are occurring more frequently and with higher intensity in a warmer climate induced by greenhouse gases. We studied the spatial and temporal distributions of the occurrence and intensity of atmospheric blocking and associated heat waves for northern summer over Eurasia based on CMIPS model simulations. To examine the global warming induced change of atmospheric blocking and heat waves, experiments for a high emissions scenario (RCP8.S) and a medium mitigation scenario (RCP4.S) are compared to the 20th century simulations (historical). Most models simulate the mean distributions of blockings reasonably well, including major blocking centers over Eurasia, northern Pacific, and northern Atlantic. However, the models tend to underestimate the number of blockings compared to MERRA and NCEPIDOE reanalysis, especially in western Siberia. Models also reproduced associated heat waves in terms of the shifting in the probability distribution function of near surface temperature. Seven out of eight models used in this study show that the frequency of atmospheric blocking over the Europe will likely decrease in a warmer climate, but slightly increase over the western Siberia. This spatial pattern resembles the blocking in the summer of 2010, indicating the possibility of more frequent occurrences of heat waves in western Siberia. In this talk, we will also discuss the potential effect of atmosphere-land feedback, particularly how the wetter spring affects the frequency and intensity of atmospheric blocking and heat wave during summer.
