We consider the one-dimensional heat and wave equations but - instead of boundary conditions - we impose on the solution certain non-local, integral constraints. An appropriate Hilbert setting leads to an integration-by-parts formula in Sobolev spaces of negative order and eventually allows us to use semigroup theory leading to analytic well-posedness, hence sharpening regularity results previously obtained by other authors. In doing so we introduce a parametrization of such integral conditions that includes known cases but also shows the connection with more usual boundary conditions, like periodic ones. In the self-adjoint case, we even obtain the so-called Weyl formula for the eigenvalue asymptotics.

Recent (early June, 1999) record high temperatures along the United State's east coast are being linked to La Niña by scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research and NOAA's Climate Prediction Center. During La Niña unusually cold water pools along the tropical Pacific Ocean. This sea surface temperature anomaly causes strange summer weather around the world, such as drought in the Mid-Atlantic states, cool temperatures in California, and rain in Indonesia.The above image shows the La Niña as seen by TOPEX-Poseidon and NOAA's polar orbiting environmental satellites. Above average sea surface heights are raised, while those lower than normal are lowered. Warm water is orange and red and cooler than normal water is blue. Exploring the Science of the \

Direct numerical simulations are carried out to investigate the effect of the wall temperature on the behavior of oblique shock-wave/turbulent boundary layer interactions at freestream Mach number $2.28$ and shock angle of the wedge generator $\varphi = 8^{\circ}$. Five values of the wall-to-recovery-temperature ratio ($T_w/T_r$) are considered, corresponding to cold, adiabatic and hot wall thermal conditions. We show that the main effect of cooling is to decrease the characteristic scales of the interaction in terms of upstream influence and extent of the separation bubble. The opposite behavior is observed in the case of heating, that produces a marked dilatation of the interaction region. The distribution of the Stanton number shows that a strong amplification of the heat transfer occurs across the interaction, and the maximum values of thermal and dynamic loads are found in the case of cold wall. The analysis reveals that the fluctuating heat flux exhibits a strong intermittent behavior, characterized by scattered spots with extremely high values compared to the mean. Furthermore, the analogy between momentum and heat transfer, typical of compressible, wall-bounded, equilibrium turbulent flows does not apply for most part of the interaction domain. The pre-multiplied spectra of the wall heat flux do not show any evidence of the influence of the low-frequency shock motion, and the primary mechanism for the generation of peak heating is found to be linked with the turbulence amplification in the interaction region.

This article is from Global Health Action , volume 7 . Abstract Background: Ambient temperatures can cause an increase in mortality. A better understanding is needed of how health status and other factors modify the risk associated with high and low temperatures, to improve the basis of preventive measures. Differences in susceptibility to temperature and to heat and cold wave duration are relatively unexplored. Objectives: We studied the associations between mortality and temperature and heat and cold wave duration, stratified by age and individual and medical factors. Methods: Deaths among all residents of Stockholm County between 1990 and 2002 were linked to discharge diagnosis data from hospital admissions, and associations were examined using the time stratified case-crossover design. Analyses were stratified by gender, age, pre-existing disease, country of origin, and municipality level wealth, and adjusted for potential confounding factors. Results: The effect on mortality by heat wave duration was higher for lower ages, in areas with lower wealth, for hospitalized patients younger than age 65. Odds were elevated among females younger than age 65, in groups with a previous hospital admission for mental disorders, and in persons with previous cardiovascular disease. Gradual increases in summer temperatures were associated with mortality in people older than 80 years, and with mortality in groups with a previous myocardial infarction and with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in the population younger than 65 years. During winter, mortality was associated with a decrease in temperature particularly in men and with the duration of cold spells for the population older than 80. A history of hospitalization for myocardial infarction increased the odds associated with cold temperatures among the population older than 65. Previous mental disease or substance abuse increased the odds of death among the population younger than 65. Conclusion: To increase effectiveness, we suggest preventive efforts should not assume susceptible groups are the same for warm and cold days and heat and cold waves, respectively.

The city of Robbinsdale says the blue-green algae on Crystal Lake could be harmful to pets and people if it is ingested. While boating is a safe activity, swimmers should use caution. We have carried out three-dimensional Navier-Stokes simulations, from quiescent conditions to the limit cycle, of a traveling-wave thermoacoustic heat engine (TAE) composed of a long variable-area resonator shrouding a smaller annular tube, which encloses the hot (HHX) and ambient (AHX) heat-exchangers, and the regenerator (REG). Simulations are wall-resolved, with no-slip and adiabatic conditions enforced at all boundaries, while the heat transfer and drag due to the REG and HXs are modeled. HHX temperatures have been investigated in the range 440K - 500K with AHX temperature fixed at 300K. The initial exponential growth of acoustic energy is due to a network of traveling waves amplified by looping around the REG/HX unit in the direction of the imposed temperature gradient. A simple analytical model demonstrates that such thermoacoustic instability is a Lagrangian thermodynamic process resembling a Stirling cycle. A system-wide linear stability model based on Rott's theory is able to accurately predict the frequency and the growth rate, exhibiting properties consistent with a supercritical Hopf bifurcation. The limit cycle is governed by acoustic streaming -- a rectified flow resulting from high-amplitude acoustics. Its key features are explained with an axially symmetric incompressible model driven by the wave-induced stresses extracted from the compressible calculations. These features include Gedeon streaming and mean recirculations due to flow separation. The first drives the mean advection of hot fluid from the HHX to a secondary heat exchanger (AHX2), in the thermal buffer tube (TBT), necessary to achieve saturation of the acoustic energy growth. The direct evaluation of the energy fluxes reveals that the efficiency of the device deteriorates with the drive ratio and that the acoustic power in the TBT is balanced primarily by the mean advection and thermoacoustic heat transport.

This article is from PLoS Currents , volume 4 . Abstract Background: July 2006 was the first major heat wave in France after the creation of a heat prevention plan. Understanding its impacts on health will help improving the efficiency of this plan. We assessed the mortality impact of the heat wave, and investigated the influence of the heat prevention plan. Methods: The study focused on nine French cities. A Poisson regression model was used to analyze the correlation between temperature, air quality and mortality. An additional spline of time was introduced to capture an additional heat wave effect. Heat-action days defined by the prevention plan were introduced as a dummy variable.Results: 411 extra deaths were observed in the nine cities during the 2006 heat wave. Unlike the 2003 heat wave, no additional heat wave effect was observed in 2006. The maximum daily relative risk of mortality varied from 1.45 in Strasbourg (IC 95% [1.01-2.08]) to 1.04 in Lille (IC 95% [0.92-1.18]). The impact on mortality of the implementation of heat-action days was non-significant and highly variable depending on the cities, with a combined excess of relative risk of -3.3% (IC 95% [-10.3%; 4.4%]). Conclusions: Although no specific heat wave effect was observed, warm temperatures and air pollution were still responsible for a significant excess mortality in France. The absence of a specific heat wave effect may be partly explained by the prevention plan. It may also indicate that higher temperatures are required to observe a mortality outburst.

The metropolis of Karachi, with a density of around 4000 persons/km 2  at present, is going through unprecedented urbanization and population growth, which can augment Urban Heat Island (UHI) triggered heat wave impacts on life and living. Here, we investigate skill of Regional Climate Model version 4.7 (RegCM4.7) in simulating 2015 heat wave episode in southern Pakistan by dynamically downscaling ERA-Interim reanalysis at 10km resolution and switching on the urban parameterization in the employed land surface scheme. Our results suggest that the RegCM4.7 has successfully reproduced the overall conditions of the 2015 heat wave. For instance simulated surface temperature maxima is seen well above 50°C for at least three consecutive days along the austere heat wave duration. Also, extended sustenance of a ridge in locality of the Karachi, as well as a low pressure system in adjacent Arabian Sea is seen to restrain normal drift of sea-breeze to the coastal city, in the simulated output. The National Weather Service (NWS) based heat index derived from the simulation is seen to remain well above 124°F during the whole heat wave period, placing the city in an “Extreme Danger” class of discomfort and high vulnerability to heat stroke. The UHI integrated RegCM4.7 is hence recommended for use in modelling to help in adaptation strategies against occurrences of such heat wave events in future.

Meteorologists there benchmark the summertime temperatures against a reference they call a “midsummer day,” which is a day where the temperature reaches or exceeds 30 degrees Celsius. According to news reports, Tokyo set two records this summer: the first for the total number of “midsummer days” in a season (68), and the second for the most consecutive “midsummer days” (38). The images above show land surface temperatures collected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite in two 8-day periods this summer: near the peak of the “hot streak” (top) and after the temperatures dropped in late August and early September (bottom). When magnetic field is applied parallel to the ab plane in d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductors, the transition of stable vortex lattice structure, spatial structure of local density of states, and specific heat oscillation by rotation of magnetic field orientation are investigated by quantitative calculations based on the selfconsistent Eilenberger theory. We estimate how the vortex state changes depending on the relative angle between the node-direction of the superconducting gap and magnetic field orientation. To reproduce the sign-change of specific heat oscillation observed in CeCoIn_5, our study is done by including strong paramagnetic effect. The quantitative theoretical calculations give decisive information to analyze the experimental data on the field-angle dependence, and establish the angle-resolved specific heat experiment as a spectroscopic means to identify the node-position of the superconducting gap.

We present a Waveform Relaxation (WR) version of the Dirichlet-Neumann algorithm, formulated specially for multiple subdomains splitting for general parabolic and hyperbolic problems. This method is based on a non-overlapping spatial domain decomposition, and the iteration involves subdomain solves in space-time with corresponding interface condition, and finally organize an exchange of information between neighboring subdomains. Using a Fourier-Laplace transform argument, for a particular relaxation parameter, we present convergence analysis of the algorithm for the heat and wave equations. We prove superlinear convergence for finite time window in case of the heat equation, and finite step convergence for the wave equation. The convergence behavior however depends on the size of the subdomains and the time window length on which the algorithm is employed. We illustrate the performance of the algorithm with numerical results, and show a comparison with classical and optimized Schwarz WR methods.

This paper considers a semilinear integro-differential equation of Volterra type which interpolates semilinear heat and wave equations. Global existence of solutions is showed in spaces of Besov type based in Morrey spaces, namely Besov-Morrey spaces. Our initial data is larger than the previous works and our results provide a maximal existence class for semilinear interpolated heat-wave equation. Some symmetries, self-similarity and asymptotic behavior of solutions are also investigated in the framework of Besov-Morrey spaces.

Williams was born in Rutherford, New Jersey, a community near the city of Paterson. His father was an English immigrant, and his mother was born in Puerto Rico. He attended public school in Rutherford until 1897, then was sent to study at Château de Lancy near Geneva, Switzerland, the Lycée Condorcet in Paris, France, for two years and Horace Mann School in New York City. Then, in 1902, he entered the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. During his time at Penn, Williams befriended Ezra Pound, Hilda Doolittle (best known as H.D.) and the painter Charles Demuth. These friendships supported his growing passion for poetry. He received his M.D. in 1906 and spent the next four years in internships in New York City and in travel and postgraduate studies abroad (e.g., at the University of Leipzig where he studied pediatrics). He returned to Rutherford in 1910 and began his medical practice, which lasted until 1951. Then during the second night on this planet, one of the dead bodies knocks on the door and wants to come in. Something very strange is going on here.
