Often they've spent much of their lives learning how to avoid feeling vulnerable at all costs-adhering to values such as toughness, assertiveness, logic, disciple, and confidence. They are trained to feel like expressing their emotions is a \"weakness,\" making them reluctant to embrace being vulnerable. How can we help men/ emotional withdrawers open up and be vulnerable? As a partner, you can encourage vulnerability by creating safety. A soft approach is important to reassure the withdrawer that they aren't doing anything \"wrong.\" Being too pushy can make the withdrawer more defensive and retreat. When initiating a conversation, it should be an invitation-not an accusation. Being vulnerable can take time... so pace it and celebrate the little wins! We want men/withdrawers to embrace the positive benefits of vulnerability to bring deeper intimacy!

Here we experimentally investigate the cage-jump motion of a two-dimensional hard-sphere-like colloidal suspension, where the volume fraction is the relevant parameter controlling the slowing down of the dynamics. We characterize the volume fraction dependence of the cage-jump features and show that, as in molecular systems, they allow for a short time prediction of the diffusivity.

This report describes and discusses several applications of new computer-based technologies which enable postsecondary students with deafness or hearing impairments to read the text of the language being spoken by the instructor and fellow students virtually in real time. Two current speech-to-text options are described: (1) steno-based systems in which a stenographer uses a 24-key machine to encode spoken English phonetically into a computer where it is converted into English text and displayed on a computer screen; and (2) computer-assisted notetaking in which a typist with special training uses a standard keyboard to input words into a laptop/PC as they are being spoken. Both types of systems provide a real-time text output that students can read on a computer or television screen in order to follow what is occurring in class. For each of these systems, the report addresses how the system works, major considerations that need to be addressed with respect to its implementation as a support service in the classroom, who is qualified to provide the service, training needs, and how the system's effectiveness can be evaluated. An appendix contains a form for evaluating student needs for real-time stenographic services. (Contains 37 references.) (CR)

A vision system has been developed that recognizes and tracks multiple vehicles from sequences of gray scale images taken from a moving car in hard real time. Recognition is accomplished by combining the analysis of single image frames with the analysis of the motion information provided by multiple consecutive image frames. In single image frames, cars are recognized by matching deformable gray scale templates, by detecting image features, such as corners, and by evaluating how these features relate to each other. Cars are also recognized by differencing consecutive image frames and by tracking motion parameters that are typical for cars. The vision system utilizes the hard real time operating system Maruti which guarantees that the timing constraints on the various vision processes are satisfied. The dynamic creation and termination of tracking processes optimizes the amount of computational resources spent and allows fast detection and tracking of multiple cars. Experimental results demonstrate robust, real time recognition and tracking over thousands of image frames.

To support applications in a real time system, conventional application development techniques and tools must be augmented with support for specification and extraction of resource requirements and timing constraints, The application development system provides a set of programming tools to support and facilitate the development of real time applications with diverse requirements. The Maruti Programming Language (MPL) is used to develop individual program modules. The Maruti Configuration Language (MCL) is used to specify how individual program modules are to be connected together to form an application and the details of the hardware of which the application is to be executed. In the current version, the base programming language used is ANSI C. MPL adds modules, shared memory blocks, critical regions, typed message passing, periodic functions, and message invoked functions to the C language. To make analyzing the resource usage of programs feasible, certain C idioms are not allowed in MPL; in particular, recursive function calls are not allowed nor are unbounded loops containing externally visible events, such as message passing and critical region transition. MPL Modules are brought together into as an executable application by a specification file written in the Maruti Configuration Language (MCL). The MCL specification determines the application's hard real time constraints, the allocation of tasks, threads, and shared memory blocks, and all message passing connections. MCL is an interpreted C-like language rather than a declarative language, allowing the instantiation of complicated subsystems using loops and subroutines in the specification.

This dissertation aimed at the development of both fundamental theory and software tools to support efficiently and reliably the scheduling of distributed hard real-time systems. The major work of this dissertation focuses on non-preemptive hard real-time scheduling, for periodic and sporadic task sets, although some of the results are also applicable to the Preemptive case. Several theorems for checking the schedulability of non-preemptive task sets are developed. Previous results on necessary and sufficient conditions for scheduling non-preemptive task sets are extended to cover the case when the task deadlines can be smaller or equal to their periods. The concept of transient and cyclic schedules is introduced to overcome the weakness of the traditional methods, which restrict the construction of a cyclic schedule to a fixed interval of length equal to the least common multiple of the periods. The Pioneers

This thesis builds upon work previously done in the development of the Computer Aided Prototyping System (CAPS) and the Prototype System Description Language (PSDL) and presents a conceptual design for the pioneer prototype of the static scheduler for multiprocessors which are part of the CAPS execution support system. The design of hard real-time systems is gaining importance in the software engineering field as real-world processes are becoming automated. This increase in automation needs the advancement of software design technology to meet the design requirements for these hard real-time systems. The CAPS and PSDL are tools being developed to aid the software designer in the rapid prototyping of hard real-time systems. Scheduling PSDL operators in multiprocessor systems to meet the timing constraints is the main part of this thesis. Implementation of the conceptual design will be the basis for further work in this area.

With the increase use of fiber optics at many installations, the ability to perform hard real-time distributed testing has become possible, that is, for all those that are not running classified real-time operations. This paper presents the design information and latency test results from a system developed at the Redstone Technical Test Center (RTTC) that enables distributed real-time classified testing applications.

System correctness for real time systems relies on both functional and temporal correctness of the system components. In order to allow creation and deployment of critical applications with hard real time constraints in a reactive environment, we have developed the Maruti environment, which consists of the Maruti operating system and runtime environment, and an application development and environment that uses the Maruti Programming Language (MPL), an extension of ANSI C; the Maruti Configuration language (MCL), which specifies how MPL modules are to be connected and any environmental constraints; and various analysis and debugging tools. The core of the Maruti runtime system is the Elemental Unit (EU) and calendar. An EU is an atomic entity triggered by incoming data/signals, that produces data/signals. A calendar specifies the execution order and time for each EU. Calendars are static entities created during application design and development, thus allowing temporal debugging of applications before they are executed on the machine. A given application may have more than one calendar to allow contingency or degraded operation.

The Computer Aided Prototyping System (CAPS) and the Prototype system Description Language (PSDL) represent a pioneering effort in the field of software development. Execution Support System (ESS) within the framework of CAPS. The Static Scheduler is one of the critical elements of the ESS which extracts critical timing constraints and precedence constraints for operators and schedules the time-critical operators to guarantee that their timing constraints will be met. The Static Scheduler uses the information of timing constraints and precedence constraints to determine whether a feasible schedule can be built. This construction provides the foundation for handling the execution for Real-Time systems. The goal of this thesis is to provide improved versions of the Static Scheduler.

The Spring project has been very active in multiple areas of real-time computing. We have developed significant results in many aspects of real-time scheduling, in real-time operating system design, in real-time transactions, and in time constrained communication protocols. We have also made progress in implementing a software (simulation) testbed, in developing a hardware operating system kernel testbed called SpringNet, and in implementing real-time transactions on a hardware testbed called CARAT. We have also begun a substantial research effort concerning dependable real-time systems. In the following sections we provide a brief overview of the status and plans for the Spring project as a whole.

This was the Fortnightly Poetry project for January 29, 2012.<br><br>In 1892 the opportunity of a lifetime came to this young versifier, when Frank Yeigh, the president of the Young Liberals' Club, of Toronto, conceived the idea of having an evening of Canadian literature, at which all available Canadian authors should be guests and read from their own works.<br><br>Among the authors present on this occasion was Pauline Johnson, who contributed to the programme one of her compositions, entitled "A Cry from an Indian Wife"; and when she recited without text this much-discussed poem, which shows the Indian's side of the North-West Rebellion, she was greeted with tremendous applause from an audience which represented the best of Toronto's art, literature and culture. She was the only one on the programme who received an encore, and to this she replied with one of her favourite canoeing poems.<br><br>The following morning the entire press of Toronto asked why this young writer was not on the platform as a professional reader; while two of the dailies even contained editorials on the subject, inquiring why she had never published a volume of her poems, and insisted so strongly that the public should hear more of her, that Mr. Frank Yeigh arranged for her to give an entire evening in Association Hall within two weeks from the date of her first appearance. It is a fictional novel written as a memoir of an unnamed biracial narrator who grew up in the South during the Reconstruction and post-Reconstruction eras. It is a story in which the narrator relates how as a young boy he initially assumed that he was white, and how his notions of racial identity were suddenly turned upside down one day—how from that moment on he was inclined to view himself and the world about him from the perspective of blackness.
