This guide is a resource for K-8 teachers, college student tutors, parents, and others engaged in learning activities to help primary, elementary, and middle school students learn mathematics and science. It presents a collection of activities adapted from printed and electronic sources which help motivate student interest in mathematics and science and make learning fun and challenging. Most items used in the activities are found in the home, particularly in the kitchen. Activities are arranged in three grade-level groups: K-2, 3-5, and 6-8. Each group includes individual activities that closely relate to grade-appropriate concepts from several science disciplines. Each activity has the following components: purpose, materials needed, what to do, questions to ask, brief explanation of mathematical or scientific concepts related to the activity, and extension activities. This publication also includes a list of Web sites and other references for finding appropriate materials for K-8 students beyond the scope of the guide. (Contains 46 Web site and print references.
