This publication contains habitat models constructed and information compiled for two distinctly different purposes. The Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) model by Raleigh and Miller contains 17 habitat variables for chinook salmon by life stage. The HSI model provides an objective quantifiable method of assessing the existing habitat conditions for chinook salmon within a study area by measuring how well each habitat variable meets the habitat requirements of the species by life stage. The model thus provides an objective basis for predicting probable project impacts, documenting post project impacts, and guiding habitat protection, mitigation, enhancement, and management decisions. The section by Nelson contains habitat criteria curves for five flows-related variables for use in the Instream Flow Incremental Methodology (IFIM) (Bovee 1982; Milhouse et al. 1984). The IFIM model is intended to provide an objective method of assessing the effects of changes in water flow on habitat of chinook salmon by life stage. The HSI model is presented first followed by the IFIM section. Comments on model assumptions or performance, should be addressed to the appropriate author of each section. A brief overview of the HSI modeling procedures and IFIM curves follow.

A review and synthesis of existing information were used to develop a Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) model and instream flow suitability curves for gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum). The model consolidates habitat use information into a framework appropriate for field application, and is scaled to produce an index between 0.0 (unsuitable habitat) and 1.0 (optimum habitat). HSI models are designed to be used with Habitat Evaluation Procedures previously developed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) models and instream flow Suitability Index (SI) curves presented in this publication aid in identifying important variables that determine the quality of striped bass habitat. Facts, concepts, and opinions obtained from published and unpublished reports, a Delphi panel of 18 striped bass experts/authorities, and the Striped Bass Committee, Southern Division, American Fisheries Society, are synthesized and presented in a format that can be used for habitat impact assessment and development of management alternatives.

Juhan ilmestyessä Aho oli jo vakiinnuttanut paikkansa Suomen "kansalliskirjailijana". Romaania on luonnehdittu Ahon teoksista klassisimmaksi ja samalla nykyaikaisimmaksi. Eeppisestä muodostaan huolimatta Juha on täynnä sisäistä draamaa.<br /><br />Juha sijoittuu tarkasti määrittelemättömään historialliseen aikaan, tarinassa viitatun kaskenpolton ja heimosotien perusteella kenties 1600- tai 1700-luvulle. Ajankohtaa ei kuitenkaan pidetä erityisen tärkeänä, sillä kyse on ikuisesta, ajattomasta aiheesta. Tapahtumapaikka on yhtä epämääräinen, kenties Kainuu tai Pohjois-Karjala, joka tapauksessa Suomen ja Venäjän rajaseutu.
