1Examining Parent-adolescent Conflict And Bullying Perpetration In Chinese Adolescents: A Parallel Latent Class Growth Modeling Approach
By Yanzhen Song
Despite extensive research on the prevalence and impact of parent-adolescent conflict and bullying perpetration, the underlying developmental mechanisms between the two variables have not been fully explored. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating the developmental trajectories of parent-adolescent conflict and bullying perpetration among Chinese adolescents. Using three waves of data from 899 middle school students (458 females; Mage = 14.55 years, SD = 1.60), this research examines the independent and joint developmental trajectories of parent-adolescent conflict and bullying perpetration and investigates the role of demographic variables in their joint development. Latent class growth analysis revealed that parent-adolescent conflict and bullying perpetration follow three and two distinct developmental trajectories, respectively. The joint developmental trajectories of parent-adolescent conflict and bullying perpetration were identified as “medium bullying-medium conflict-decreasing”, “low bullying-medium conflict-growth”, and “medium bullying-low conflict-decreasing”. Demographic characteristics, including boarding status, only child status and left-behind status, had the significant effect on the joint developmental trajectories. These findings underscore the importance of parent-child relationships in preventing adolescent bullying, offering evidence-based insights for understanding the developmental trajectories and informing effective intervention strategies.

3Modeling Growth Paths Of Interacting Crack Pairs In Elastic Media
By Ramin Ghelichi and Ken Kamrin
The problem of predicting the growth of a system of cracks, each crack influencing the growth of the others, arises in multiple fields. We develop an analytical framework toward this aim, which we apply to the `En-Passant' family of crack growth problems, in which a pair of initially parallel, offset cracks propagate nontrivially toward each other under far-field opening stress. We utilize boundary integral and perturbation methods of linear elasticity, Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics, and common crack opening criteria to calculate the first analytical model for curved En-Passant crack paths. The integral system is reduced under a hierarchy of approximations, producing three methods of increasing simplicity for computing crack paths. The last such method is a major highlight of this work, using an asymptotic matching argument to predict crack paths based on superposition of simple, single-crack fields. Within the corresponding limits of the three methods, all three are shown to agree with each other. We provide comparisons to exact results and existing experimental data to verify certain approximation steps.

4Investigating Psychotherapy No-Shows Using Latent Growth Mixture Modeling
By Riley Palmer and Pat Frazier
Client dropout, also known as premature or unilateral termination, is a prevalent problem in psychotherapy, and it has problematic consequences for patients and mental health clinics. Dropout has been defined in a variety of ways, including therapist judgment, failure to complete a specified number of sessions, and failure to achieve reliable change. However, most research does not conceptualize it as missing a scheduled appointment, despite this being the form of dropout that is most costly to mental health providers and prevents other patients from being seen (Barrett et al., 2008). This is especially important at college counseling centers, which have seen an increase in the demand for services (Lipson et al., 2019) and which often have significant wait lists (LeViness et al., 2018). There is a general consensus that more therapy is better, and research on the factors associated with dropout has led to the development of interventions designed to reduce its occurrence and increase the number of therapy sessions (Oldham et al., 2012). However, there is evidence to suggest that some of those who drop out show improvement and may have gotten what they needed from therapy (April & Nicholas, 1996; Buizza et al., 2019; O’Keefe et al., 2019). As such, attempts to prolong therapy may actually be counterproductive for those individuals. The data in support of some dropouts getting what they need is largely qualitative, as quantitative studies typically take an average-level approach and may fail to represent those individuals (Bartholomew et al., 2019; Saxon et al., 2017). This study aims to address this gap in the literature by using latent growth mixture modeling (LGMM) and latent class growth analysis (LCGA), techniques that identify subgroups of individuals who share similar trajectories (Frankfurt et al., 2016). This research has the potential to further our understanding of those who drop out of therapy and has implications for which dropout reduction strategies are most appropriate.

5A Latent Growth Modeling Analysis Of Social Norms And Tobacco Use Among Adult Smokers In Mainland China [First Pre-Registration]
By Shaon Lahiri
This is the first pre-registration for this project, submitted before the data are seen or accessed. The purpose of this document are to record the project hypotheses and intended analysis plan prior to seeing the data, as well as stating what data and preliminary analyses will be run prior to pre-registration of the main analyses (i.e. latent growth models) for this project. The main reason for this first pre-registration is because the data are not known to me, and I need to see if they contain the variables of interest and appropriate sample size prior to conducting my analyses. However, I still want to make known my intentions prior to seeing the data at all.

6DTIC ADA043867: Priorities Modeling Using Goal Growth Programming.
By Defense Technical Information Center
The JCAP Priorities Model is a group of programs which evaluates and orders decision alternatives, such as various schedules of projects, for maximum planned growth to multiple goals in accordance with goals and priorities established by the manager himself or by higher authority. The purpose is stated simply as to develop and rank decision alternatives for maximum achievement of overall management goals, both economic and non-economic. The model answers questions of how, when, where and in what amounts should resources be allocated to competing options in situations where multiple objectives prevail. The Priorities Model, in achieving this objective, utilizes new technique -- GOAL GROWTH PROGRAMMING -- to develop target goal growth paths that reflect both short-range and long-range management priorities. The model then resolves the trade-offs involved so that the final solution does represent the best attainable goal growth plan from among the many combinations of alternatives available.

7NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20160013548: Watershed-Scale Modeling Of Land-Use And Altered Environment Impacts On Aquatic Weed Growth In The Delta
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The California Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta is the hub for California's water supply, conveying water from Northern to Southern California agriculture and communities while supporting important ecosystem services, agriculture, and communities in the Delta. Changes in climate, long-term drought, and water quality have all been suspected as playing role in the dramatic expansion of invasive aquatic plants and their impact on ecosystems of the San Francisco Bay / California Delta complex. NASA Ames Research Center, USDA-Agricultural Research Service, the State of California, UC Davis, and local governments have partnered under a USDA sponsored project (DRAAWP) to develop science-based, adaptive-management strategies for invasive aquatic plants in Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Critical to developing management strategies is to understand how the Delta is affected by both the magnitude of fluctuations in land-use and climate / drought induced altered environments and how the plants respond to these altered environments. We utilize the Soil Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), a watershed-scale model developed to quantify the impact of land management practices in large and complex watersheds on water quality, as the backbone for a customized Delta model - Delta-SWAT. The model uses land-use, soils, elevation, and hydrologic routing to characterize pesticide and nutrient transport from the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers watersheds and loading into the Delta. Land-use within the Delta, as well as water extraction to supply those functions, and the resulting return of water to Delta waterways are included in Delta-SWAT. Hydrologic transport within the Delta has required significant attention to address the lack of elevation driven transport processes. Delta-SWAT water quality trend estimates are compared with water quality monitoring conducted throughout the Delta. Aquatic plant response to water quality and other environmental factors is carried out using a customized model component. Plant response to the range of water quality factors, response times, and altered temperature and light regimes of the Delta have required gap-filling studies to provide model parameters. Delta-SWAT provides a tool for evaluating temporal and spatial effects of land-use and altered environments in the Delta and contributing watersheds on aquatic weed growth. Using Delta-SWAT for simulation modeling allows evaluation of historic and current conditions as well as consideration potential climate change and management practice outcomes. Delta-SWAT adds to the scientific understanding of dynamics in the Delta and enhances development of science-informed, management strategies and practices.

9Time-warped Growth Processes, With Applications To The Modeling Of Boom-bust Cycles In House Prices
By Jie Peng, Debashis Paul and Hans-Georg Müller
House price increases have been steady over much of the last 40 years, but there have been occasional declines, most notably in the recent housing bust that started around 2007, on the heels of the preceding housing bubble. We introduce a novel growth model that is motivated by time-warping models in functional data analysis and includes a nonmonotone time-warping component that allows the inclusion and description of boom-bust cycles and facilitates insights into the dynamics of asset bubbles. The underlying idea is to model longitudinal growth trajectories for house prices and other phenomena, where temporal setbacks and deflation may be encountered, by decomposing such trajectories into two components. A first component corresponds to underlying steady growth driven by inflation that anchors the observed trajectories on a simple first order linear differential equation, while a second boom-bust component is implemented as time warping. Time warping is a commonly encountered phenomenon and reflects random variation along the time axis. Our approach to time warping is more general than previous approaches by admitting the inclusion of nonmonotone warping functions. The anchoring of the trajectories on an underlying linear dynamic system also makes the time-warping component identifiable and enables straightforward estimation procedures for all model components. The application to the dynamics of housing prices as observed for 19 metropolitan areas in the U.S. from December 1998 to July 2013 reveals that the time setbacks corresponding to nonmonotone time warping vary substantially across markets and we find indications that they are related to market-specific growth rates.

10Modeling Of Sensory Characteristics Based On The Growth Of Food Spoilage Bacteria
By D. Valenti, G. Denaro, F. Giarratana, A. Giuffrida, S. Mazzola, G. Basilone, S. Aronica, A. Bonanno and B. Spagnolo
During last years theoretical works shed new light and proposed new hypothesis on the mechanisms which regulate the time behaviour of biological populations in different natural systems. Despite of this, the role of environmental variables in ecological systems is still an open question. Filling this gap of knowledge is a crucial task for a deeper comprehension of the dynamics of biological populations in real ecosystems. In this work we study how the dynamics of food spoilage bacteria influences the sensory characteristics of fresh fish specimens. This topic is crucial for a better understanding of the role played by the bacterial growth on the organoleptic properties, and for the quality evaluation and risk assessment of food products. We therefore analyze the time behaviour, in fresh fish specimens, of sensory characteristics starting from the growth curves of two spoilage bacterial communities. The theoretical study, initially based on a deterministic model, exploits experimental temperature profiles. As a first step, a model of predictive microbiology is used to reproduce the experimental behaviour of the two bacterial populations. Afterwards, the theoretical bacterial growths are converted, through suitable differential equations, into "sensory" scores, based on the Quality Index Method (QIM), a scoring system for freshness and quality sensory estimation of fishery products. As a third step, the theoretical curves of QIM scores are compared with the experimental data obtained by sensory analysis. Finally, the differential equations for QIM scores are modified by adding terms of multiplicative white noise, which mimics the effects of uncertainty and variability in sensory analysis. A better agreement between experimental and theoretical QIM scores is observed, in some cases, in the presence of suitable values of noise intensity respect to the deterministic analysis.

11Quantitative Modeling Of \textit{in Situ} X-ray Reflectivity During Organic Molecule Thin Film Growth
By Arthur R. Woll, Tushar V. Desai and James R. Engstrom
Synchrotron-based x-ray reflectivity is increasingly employed as an \textit{in situ} probe of surface morphology during thin film growth, but complete interpretation of the results requires modeling the growth process. Many models have been developed and employed for this purpose, yet no detailed, comparative studies of their scope and accuracy exists in the literature. Using experimental data obtained from hyperthermal deposition of pentane and diindenoperylene (DIP) on SiO$_2$, we compare and contrast three such models, both with each other and with detailed characterization of the surface morphology using ex-situ atomic force microscopy (AFM). These two systems each exhibit particular phenomena of broader interest: pentacene/SiO$_2$ exhibits a rapid transition from rough to smooth growth. DIP/SiO$_2$, under the conditions employed here, exhibits growth rate acceleration due to a different sticking probability between the substrate and film. In general, \textit{independent of which model is used}, we find good agreement between the surface morphology obtained from fits to the \insitu x-ray data with the actual morphology at early times. This agreement deteriorates at later time, once the root-mean squared (rms) film roughness exceeds about 1 ML. A second observation is that, because layer coverages are under-determined by the evolution of a single point on the reflectivity curve, we find that the best fits to reflectivity data --- corresponding to the lowest values of $\chi_\nu^2$ --- do not necessarily yield the best agreement between simulated and measured surface morphologies. Instead, it appears critical that the model reproduce all local extrema in the data. In addition to showing that layer morphologies can be extracted from a minimal set of data, the methodology established here provides a basis for improving models of multilayer growth by comparison to real systems.

12Using Blinking Fractals For Mathematical Modeling Of Processes Of Growth In Biological Systems
By Yaroslav D. Sergeyev
Many biological processes and objects can be described by fractals. The paper uses a new type of objects - blinking fractals - that are not covered by traditional theories considering dynamics of self-similarity processes. It is shown that both traditional and blinking fractals can be successfully studied by a recent approach allowing one to work numerically with infinite and infinitesimal numbers. It is shown that blinking fractals can be applied for modeling complex processes of growth of biological systems including their season changes. The new approach allows one to give various quantitative characteristics of the obtained blinking fractals models of biological systems.

14Modeling The Growth Of Fingerprints Improves Matching For Adolescents
By Carsten Gottschlich, Thomas Hotz, Robert Lorenz, Stefanie Bernhardt, Michael Hantschel and Axel Munk
We study the effect of growth on the fingerprints of adolescents, based on which we suggest a simple method to adjust for growth when trying to recover a juvenile's fingerprint in a database years later. Based on longitudinal data sets in juveniles' criminal records, we show that growth essentially leads to an isotropic rescaling, so that we can use the strong correlation between growth in stature and limbs to model the growth of fingerprints proportional to stature growth as documented in growth charts. The proposed rescaling leads to a 72% reduction of the distances between corresponding minutiae for the data set analyzed. These findings were corroborated by several verification tests. In an identification test on a database containing 3.25 million right index fingers at the Federal Criminal Police Office of Germany, the identification error rate of 20.8% was reduced to 2.1% by rescaling. The presented method is of striking simplicity and can easily be integrated into existing automated fingerprint identification systems.

17Modeling Elasticity In Crystal Growth
By K. R. Elder, Mark Katakowski, Mikko Haataja and Martin Grant
A new model of crystal growth is presented that describes the phenomena on atomic length and diffusive time scales. The former incorporates elastic and plastic deformation in a natural manner, and the latter enables access to times scales much larger than conventional atomic methods. The model is shown to be consistent with the predictions of Read and Shockley for grain boundary energy, and Matthews and Blakeslee for misfit dislocations in epitaxial growth.

18NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19950024938: Numerical Modeling Of Bridgman Growth Of PbSnTe In A Magnetic Field
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
In this work we study heat and mass transport, fluid motion, and solid/liquid phase change in the process of steady Bridgman growth of Pb(.8)Sn(.2)Te (LTT) in an axially-imposed uniform magnetic field under terrestrial and microgravity conditions. In particular, this research is concerned with the interrelationships among segregation, buoyancy-driven convection, and magnetic damping in the LTT melt. The main objectives are to provide a quantitative understanding of the complex transport phenomena during solidification of the nondilute binary of LTT, to provide estimates of the strength of magnetic field required to achieve the desired diffusion-dominated growth, and to assess the role of magnetic damping for space and earth based control of the buoyancy-induced convection. The problem was solved by using FIDAP and numerical results for both vertical and horizontal growth configurations with respect to the acceleration of gravity vector are presented.

19Trajectories Of Rumination And Negative Cognitive Style From Late Childhood Through Adolescence: Modeling Normative Growth Patterns And Predicting Developmental Origins Of Cognitive Vulnerabilities
By Benjamin Hankin, Jami Young and Tina H. Schweizer
Negative cognitive style and rumination are prominent cognitive vulnerabilities (CVs) that contribute to development of psychopathology, especially internalizing problems. Yet, little is known about trajectories of CVs across development (age) and gender and what predicts CVs. This study characterized CV trajectories from ages 9-18 and investigated predictors of CV trajectories. Community youth (N=607; Mage=12.37; 55% girls) completed repeated assessments of CVs across three years; youth and parents were assessed for many CV predictors at baseline. Measurement invariance supported partial scalar for CVs across age and scalar invariance by gender. Quadratic age characterized rumination trajectories (decrease ages 9-12; increase ages 13-18); girls ruminated more than boys. Negative cognitive style showed no significant gender or age effects. Most baseline predictors (observed parental positive affect; youth temperament, personality disorder traits, coping, emotion regulation, internalizing symptoms, MDD history, and negative environmental contexts) predicted CV trajectories. Implications for theory and clinical application are discussed.

20Modeling One-dimensional Island Growth With Mass-dependent Detachment Rates
By R. B. Stinchcombe and F. D. A. Aarão Reis
We study one-dimensional models of particle diffusion and attachment/detachment from islands where the detachment rates gamma(m) of particles at the cluster edges increase with cluster mass m. They are expected to mimic the effects of lattice mismatch with the substrate and/or long-range repulsive interactions that work against the formation of long islands. Short-range attraction is represented by an overall factor epsilon <

21NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19890007915: Stochastic Modeling Of Crack Initiation And Short-crack Growth Under Creep And Creep-fatigue Conditions
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
A simplified stochastic model is proposed for crack initiation and short-crack growth under creep and creep-fatigue conditions. Material inhomogeneity provides the random nature of crack initiation and early growth. In the model, the influence of microstructure is introduced by the variability of: (1) damage accumulation along grain boundaries, (2) critical damage required for crack initiation or growth, and (3) the grain-boundary length. The probabilities of crack initiation and growth are derived by using convolution integrals. The model is calibrated and used to predict the crack density and crack-growth rate of short cracks of 304 stainless steel under creep and creep-fatigue conditions. The mean-crack initiation lives are predicted to be within an average deviation of about 10 percent from the experimental results. The predicted cumulative distributions of crack-growth rate follow the experimental data closely. The applicability of the simplified stochastic model is discussed and the future research direction is outlined.

22A Method For Modeling Growth Of Organs And Transplants Based On The General Growth Law: Application To The Liver In Dogs And Humans.
By Shestopaloff, Yuri K. and Sbalzarini, Ivo F.
This article is from PLoS ONE , volume 9 . Abstract Understanding biological phenomena requires a systemic approach that incorporates different mechanisms acting on different spatial and temporal scales, since in organisms the workings of all components, such as organelles, cells, and organs interrelate. This inherent interdependency between diverse biological mechanisms, both on the same and on different scales, provides the functioning of an organism capable of maintaining homeostasis and physiological stability through numerous feedback loops. Thus, developing models of organisms and their constituents should be done within the overall systemic context of the studied phenomena. We introduce such a method for modeling growth and regeneration of livers at the organ scale, considering it a part of the overall multi-scale biochemical and biophysical processes of an organism. Our method is based on the earlier discovered general growth law, postulating that any biological growth process comprises a uniquely defined distribution of nutritional resources between maintenance needs and biomass production. Based on this law, we introduce a liver growth model that allows to accurately predicting the growth of liver transplants in dogs and liver grafts in humans. Using this model, we find quantitative growth characteristics, such as the time point when the transition period after surgery is over and the liver resumes normal growth, rates at which hepatocytes are involved in proliferation, etc. We then use the model to determine and quantify otherwise unobservable metabolic properties of livers.

23NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20130014354: Markov Modeling Of Component Fault Growth Over A Derived Domain Of Feasible Output Control Effort Modifications
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
This paper introduces a novel Markov process formulation of stochastic fault growth modeling, in order to facilitate the development and analysis of prognostics-based control adaptation. A metric representing the relative deviation between the nominal output of a system and the net output that is actually enacted by an implemented prognostics-based control routine, will be used to define the action space of the formulated Markov process. The state space of the Markov process will be defined in terms of an abstracted metric representing the relative health remaining in each of the system s components. The proposed formulation of component fault dynamics will conveniently relate feasible system output performance modifications to predictions of future component health deterioration.

24NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19900018782: Reliability Growth Modeling Analysis Of The Space Shuttle Main Engines Based Upon The Weibull Process
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The Weibull process, identified as the inhomogeneous Poisson process with the Weibull intensity function, is used to model the reliability growth assessment of the space shuttle main engine test and flight failure data. Additional tables of percentage-point probabilities for several different values of the confidence coefficient have been generated for setting (1-alpha)100-percent two sided confidence interval estimates on the mean time between failures. The tabled data pertain to two cases: (1) time-terminated testing, and (2) failure-terminated testing. The critical values of the three test statistics, namely Cramer-von Mises, Kolmogorov-Smirnov, and chi-square, were calculated and tabled for use in the goodness of fit tests for the engine reliability data. Numerical results are presented for five different groupings of the engine data that reflect the actual response to the failures.

26NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20120008556: Modeling Of Melt Growth During Carbothermal Processing Of Lunar Regolith
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The carbothermal processing of lunar regolith has been proposed as a means to produce carbon monoxide and ultimately oxygen to support human exploration of the moon. In this process, gaseous methane is pyrolyzed as it flows over the hot surface of a molten zone of lunar regolith and is converted to carbon and hydrogen. Carbon gets deposited on the surface of the melt, and mixes and reacts with the metal oxides in it to produce carbon monoxide that bubbles out of the melt. Carbon monoxide is further processed in other reactors downstream to ultimately produce oxygen. The amount of oxygen produced crucially depends on the amount of regolith that is molten. In this paper we develop a model of the heat transfer in carbothermal processing. Regolith in a suitable container is heated by a heat flux at its surface such as by continuously shining a beam of solar energy or a laser on it. The regolith on the surface absorbs the energy and its temperature rises until it attains the melting point. The energy from the heat flux is then used for the latent heat necessary to change phase from solid to liquid, after which the temperature continues to rise. Thus a small melt pool appears under the heated zone shortly after the heat flux is turned on. As time progresses, the pool absorbs more heat and supplies the energy required to melt more of the regolith, and the size of the molten zone increases. Ultimately, a steady-state is achieved when the heat flux absorbed by the melt is balanced by radiative losses from the surface. In this paper, we model the melting and the growth of the melt zone with time in a bed of regolith when a portion of its surface is subjected to a constant heat flux. The heat flux is assumed to impinge on a circular area. Our model is based on an axisymmetric three-dimensional variation of the temperature field in the domain. Heat transfer occurs only by conduction, and effects of convective heat transport are assumed negligible. Radiative heat loss from the surface of the melt and the regolith to the surroundings is permitted. We perform numerical computations to determine the shape and the mass of the melt at steady state and its time evolution. We first neglect the volume change upon melting, and subsequently perform calculations including it. Predictions from our model are compared to test data to determine the effective thermal conductivities of the regolith and the melt that are compatible with the data

27NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19880005507: Modeling The Growth Dynamics Of Four Candidate Crops For Controlled Ecological Life Support Systems (CELSS)
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The production of food for human life support for advanced space missions will require the management of many different crops. The research to design these food production capabilities along with the waste management to recycle human metabolic wastes and inedible plant components are parts of Controlled Ecological Life Support Systems (CELSS). Since complete operating CELSS were not yet built, a useful adjunct to the research developing the various pieces of a CELSS are system simulation models that can examine what is currently known about the possible assembly of subsystems into a full CELSS. The growth dynamics of four crops (wheat, soybeans, potatoes, and lettuce) are examined for their general similarities and differences within the context of their important effects upon the dynamics of the gases, liquids, and solids in the CELSS. Data for the four crops currently under active research in the CELSS program using high-production hydroponics are presented. Two differential equations are developed and applied to the general characteristics of each crop growth pattern. Model parameters are determined by closely approximating each crop's data.

28Dissecting The Regulation Of Pollen Tube Growth By Modeling The Interplay Of Hydrodynamics, Cell Wall And Ion Dynamics.
By Liu, Junli and Hussey, Patrick J.
This article is from Frontiers in Plant Science , volume 5 . Abstract Hydrodynamics, cell wall and ion dynamics are all important properties that regulate pollen tube growth. Currently, the two main pollen tube growth models, the cell wall model and the hydrodynamic model do not appear to be reconcilable. Here we develop an integrative model for pollen tube growth and show that our model reproduces key experimental observations: (1) that the hypertonic condition leads to a much longer oscillatory period and that the hypotonic condition halves the oscillatory period; (2) that oscillations in turgor are experimentally undetectable; (3) that increasing the extracellular calcium concentration or decreasing the pH decreases the growth oscillatory amplitude; (4) that knockout of Raba4d, a member of the Rab family of small GTPase proteins, decreases pollen tube length after germination for 24 h. Using the model generated here, we reveal that (1) when cell wall extensibility is large, pollen tube may sustain growth at different volume changes and maintain relatively stable turgor; (2) turgor increases if cell wall extensibility decreases; (3) increasing turgor due to decrease in osmolarity in the media, although very small, increases volume change. However, increasing turgor due to decrease in cell wall extensibility decreases volume change. In this way regulation of pollen tube growth by turgor is context dependent. By changing the osmolarity in the media, the main regulatory points are extracellular osmolarity for water flow and turgor for the volume encompassed by the cell wall. However, if the viscosity of cell wall changes, the main regulatory points are turgor for water flow and wall extensibility for the volume encompassed by the cell wall. The novel methodology developed here reveals the underlying context-dependent regulatory principle of pollen tube growth.

30NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19950009503: Computer Modeling The Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Behavior Of Metals In Corrosive Environments
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The objective of this task was to develop a method to digitize FCP (fatigue crack propagation) kinetics data, generally presented in terms of extensive da/dN-Delta K pairs, to produce a file for subsequent linear superposition or curve-fitting analysis. The method that was developed is specific to the Numonics 2400 Digitablet and is comparable to commercially available software products as Digimatic(sup TM 4). Experiments demonstrated that the errors introduced by the photocopying of literature data, and digitization, are small compared to those inherent in laboratory methods to characterize FCP in benign and aggressive environments. The digitizing procedure was employed to obtain fifteen crack growth rate data sets for several aerospace alloys in aggressive environments.

31NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19860003720: Modeling Of Convection Phenomena In Bridgman-Stockbarger Crystal Growth
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
Thermal convection phenomena in a vertically oriented Bridgman-Stockbarger apparatus were modeled by computer simulations for different gravity conditions, ranging from earth conditions to extremely low gravity, approximate space conditions. The modeling results were obtained by the application of a state-of-the art, transient, multi-dimensional, completely densimetrically coupled, discrete-element computational model which was specifically developed for the simulation of flow, temperature, and species concentration conditions in two-phase (solid-liquid) systems. The computational model was applied to the simulation of the flow and the thermal conditions associated with the convection phenomena in a modified Germanium-Silicon charge enclosed in a stationary fused-silica ampoule. The results clearly indicated that the gravitational field strength influences the characteristics of the coherent vortical flow patterns, interface shape and position, maximum melt velocity, and interfacial normal temperature gradient.

33A Day In The Life Of Fish Larvae: Modeling Foraging And Growth Using Quirks.
By Huebert, Klaus B. and Peck, Myron A.
This article is from PLoS ONE , volume 9 . Abstract This article introduces “Quirks,” a generic, individual-based model synthesizing over 40 years of empirical and theoretical insights into the foraging behavior and growth physiology of marine fish larvae. In Quirks, different types of larvae are defined by a short list of their biological traits, and all foraging and growth processes (including the effects of key environmental factors) are modeled following one unified set of mechanistic rules. This approach facilitates ecologically meaningful comparisons between different species and environments. We applied Quirks to model young exogenously feeding larvae of four species: 5.5-mm European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus), 7-mm Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), 13-mm Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus), and 7-mm European sprat (Sprattus sprattus). Modeled growth estimates explained the majority of variability among 53 published empirical growth estimates, and displayed very little bias: 0.65%±1.2% d−1 (mean ± standard error). Prey organisms of ∼67% the maximum ingestible prey length were optimal for all larval types, in terms of the expected ingestion per encounter. Nevertheless, the foraging rate integrated over all favorable prey sizes was highest when smaller organisms made up >95% of the prey biomass under the assumption of constant normalized size spectrum slopes. The overall effect of turbulence was consistently negative, because its detrimental influence on prey pursuit success exceeded its beneficial influence on prey encounter rate. Model sensitivity to endogenous traits and exogenous environmental factors was measured and is discussed in depth. Quirks is free software and open source code is provided.

34Structural Equation Modeling Of Latent Growth Curves Of Weight Gain Among Treated Tuberculosis Patients.
By Vasantha, Mahalingam and Venkatesan, Perumal
This article is from PLoS ONE , volume 9 . Abstract Tuberculosis still remains a major public health problem even though it is treatable and curable. Weight gain measurement during anti tuberculosis (TB) treatment period is an important component to assess the progress of TB patients. In this study, Latent Growth Models (LGMs) were implemented in a longitudinal design to predict the change in weight of TB patients who were given three different regimens under randomized controlled clinical trial for anti-TB treatment. Linear and Quadratic LGMs were fitted using Mplus software. The age, sex and treatment response of the TB patients were used as time invariant independent variables of the growth trajectories. The quadratic trend was found to be better in explaining the changes in weight without grouping than the quadratic model for three group comparisons. A significant increase in the change of weight over time was identified while a significant quadratic effect indicated that weights were sustained over time. The growth rate was similar in both the groups. The treament response had significant association with the growth rate of weight scores of the patients.

36Artificial Neural Network Modeling Of Forest Tree Growth
By Christopher Gordon
The problem of modeling forest tree growth curves with an artificial neural network (NN) is examined. The NN parametric form is shown to be a suitable model if each forest tree plot is assumed to consist of several differently growing sub-plots. The predictive Bayesian approach is used in estimating the NN output. Data from the correlated curve trend (CCT) experiments are used. The NN predictions are compared with those of one of the best parametric solutions, the Schnute model. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) methods are used to evaluate whether any observed differences are statistically significant. From a Frequentist perspective the differences between the Schnute and NN approach are found not to be significant. However, a Bayesian ANOVA indicates that there is a 93% probability of the NN approach producing better predictions on average.

We present a multiphase mathematical model for tumor growth which incorporates the remodeling of the extracellular matrix and describes the formation of fibrotic tissue by tumor cells. We also detail a full qualitative analysis of the spatially homogeneous problem, and study the equilibria of the system in order to characterize the conditions under which fibrosis may occur.

38NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19900018975: Microphysical Fundamentals Governing Cirrus Cloud Growth: Modeling Studies
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
For application to Global Climate Models, large scale numerical models of cirrus cloud formation and maintenance need to be refined to more reliably simulate the effects and feedbacks of high level clouds. A key aspect is how ice crystal growth is initiated in cirrus, which has started a cloud microphysical controversy between camps either believing that heterogeneous or homogeneous drop freezing is predominantly responsible for cold cirrus ice crystal nucleation. In view of convincing evidence for the existence of highly supercooled cloud droplets in the middle and upper troposphere, however, it is concluded that active ice nuclei are rather scarce at cirrus cloud altitudes, and so a new understanding of cirrus cloud formation is needed. This understanding is sought through an examination of cirrus cloud growth models.

39Global Modeling Of Nebulae With Particle Growth, Drift And Evaporation Fronts. I: Methodology And Typical Results
By Paul R. Estrada, Jeffrey N. Cuzzi and Demitri A. Morgan
We model particle growth in a turbulent, viscously evolving protoplanetary nebula, incorporating sticking, bouncing, fragmentation, and mass transfer at high speeds. We treat small particles using a moments method and large particles using a traditional histogram binning, including a probability distribution function of collisional velocities. The fragmentation strength of the particles depends on their composition (icy aggregates are stronger than silicate aggregates). The particle opacity, which controls the nebula thermal structure, evolves as particles grow and mass redistributes. While growing, particles drift radially due to nebula headwind drag. Particles of different compositions evaporate at "evaporation fronts" (EFs) where the midplane temperature exceeds their respective evaporation temperatures. We track the vapor and solid phases of each component, accounting for advection and radial and vertical diffusion. We present characteristic results in evolutions lasting $2 \times 10^5$ years. In general, (a) mass is transferred from the outer to inner nebula in significant amounts, creating radial concentrations of solids at EFs, (b) particle sizes are limited by a combination of fragmentation, bouncing, and drift, (c) "lucky" large particles never represent a significant amount of mass, and (d) restricted radial zones just outside each EF become compositionally enriched in the associated volatiles. We point out implications for mm-submm SEDs and inference of nebula mass, radial banding, the role of opacity on new mechanisms for generating turbulence, enrichment of meteorites in heavy oxygen isotopes, variable and nonsolar redox conditions, primary accretion of silicate and icy planetesimals, and the makeup of Jupiter's core.

40Preferential Growth: Solution And Application To Modeling Stock Market
By L. Kullmann and J. Kertesz
We consider a preferential growth model where particles are added one by one to the system consisting of clusters of particles. A new particle can either form a new cluster (with probability q) or join an already existing cluster with a probability proportional to the size thereof. We calculate exactly the probability P_i(k,t) that the size of the i-th cluster at time t is k. We applied our model as a background for a microscopic economic model.

41Modeling The Effects Of Cymene On The Distribution Of Germination And Growth Of Beauveria Bassiana
By Luong Nguyen, Dubravka Bodiroga, Reka Kelemen, Jaewook Joo and Kimberly D. Gwinn
Essential oils have antifungal and antipathogenic effects and therefore are targets in plant pathology research for their potential uses as natural substitutes for inorganic plant pesticides. Beauveria bassiana, an entomopathogenic fungus, can endophytically colonize a vast number of plant species and trigger induced systemic resistance against plant pathogens. Spore germination is the most vulnerable in the fungal life cycle and is therefore a good candidate for monitoring the effect of essential oils on the growth of B. bassiana. Percentage germination of fungal spores and length of germination tubes were recorded from experiments. A mathematical model that was able to capture the effects of cymene, an essential oil produced by Monarda, on the germination and growth was developed. This is the first report of a model for the impact of essential oils on B. bassiana spore germination.

42NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19820005092: Modeling Of Thin-film GaAs Growth
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
A solid Monte Carlo model is constructed for the simulation of crystal growth. The model assumes thermally accommodated adatoms impinge upon the surface during a delta time interval. The surface adatoms are assigned a random energy from a Boltzmann distribution, and this energy determines whether the adatoms evaporate, migrate, or remain stationary during the delta time interval. For each addition or migration of an adatom, potential wells are adjusted to reflect the absorption, migration, or desorption potential changes.

43Modeling The Average Shortest Path Length In Growth Of Word-adjacency Networks
By Andrzej Kulig, Stanislaw Drozdz, Jaroslaw Kwapien and Pawel Oswiecimka
We investigate properties of evolving linguistic networks defined by the word-adjacency relation. Such networks belong to the category of networks with accelerated growth but their shortest path length appears to reveal the network size dependence of different functional form than the ones known so far. We thus compare the networks created from literary texts with their artificial substitutes based on different variants of the Dorogovtsev-Mendes model and observe that none of them is able to properly simulate the novel asymptotics of the shortest path length. Then, we identify the local chain-like linear growth induced by grammar and style as a missing element in this model and extend it by incorporating such effects. It is in this way that a satisfactory agreement with the empirical result is obtained.

44Bayesian Modeling Of Bacterial Growth For Multiple Populations
By A. Paula Palacios, J. Miguel Marín, Emiliano J. Quinto and Michael P. Wiper
Bacterial growth models are commonly used for the prediction of microbial safety and the shelf life of perishable foods. Growth is affected by several environmental factors such as temperature, acidity level and salt concentration. In this study, we develop two models to describe bacterial growth for multiple populations under both equal and different environmental conditions. First, a semi-parametric model based on the Gompertz equation is proposed. Assuming that the parameters of the Gompertz equation may vary in relation to the running conditions under which the experiment is performed, we use feedforward neural networks to model the influence of these environmental factors on the growth parameters. Second, we propose a more general model which does not assume any underlying parametric form for the growth function. Thus, we consider a neural network as a primary growth model which includes the influencing environmental factors as inputs to the network. One of the main disadvantages of neural networks models is that they are often very difficult to tune, which complicates fitting procedures. Here, we show that a simple Bayesian approach to fitting these models can be implemented via the software package WinBugs. Our approach is illustrated using real experimental Listeria monocytogenes growth data.

45NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20050172087: Methodology Developed For Modeling The Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior Of Single-Crystal, Nickel-Base Superalloys
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
Because of their superior high-temperature properties, gas generator turbine airfoils made of single-crystal, nickel-base superalloys are fast becoming the standard equipment on today's advanced, high-performance aerospace engines. The increased temperature capabilities of these airfoils has allowed for a significant increase in the operating temperatures in turbine sections, resulting in superior propulsion performance and greater efficiencies. However, the previously developed methodologies for life-prediction models are based on experience with polycrystalline alloys and may not be applicable to single-crystal alloys under certain operating conditions. One of the main areas where behavior differences between single-crystal and polycrystalline alloys are readily apparent is subcritical fatigue crack growth (FCG). The NASA Lewis Research Center's work in this area enables accurate prediction of the subcritical fatigue crack growth behavior in single-crystal, nickel-based superalloys at elevated temperatures.

46NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19820019283: Modeling Of Thin-film GaAs Growth
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
A model of crystal growth is discussed that takes into account the processes of nucleation on the growing surface and also considers the processes of surface migration and desorption of adatoms. The solid on solid (SOS) model of crystal growth is represented by a rectangular array of integers where each integer represents the number of adatoms in a column perpendicular to some reference frame. The adatoms can represent atoms or molecules that are being stacked. This SOS method is used to simulate epitaxial growth of crystals. Output of the computer program developed can be graphic or quantitative.

47Modeling And Simulation Of Growth In Diastolic Heart Failure
By Pezhman Namashiri, Akbar Allahverdizadeh, Behnam Dadashzadeh
Heart failure is one of the cardiovascular diseases that causes changes in the structure of the heart and reduces the output of the heart. This disease can be divided into two categories: diastolic and systolic heart failure. In diastolic heart failure, the thickness of the ventricular walls increased and is associated with concentric hypertrophy. In this study, concentric hypertrophy is considered to be caused by pressure overload, as a result of which, the number of sarcomeres increases in parallel, and as a result, causes a relative increase in the transverse area of the cardiomyocytes. Continuum equations of concentric hypertrophy by using an idealized biventricular geometry have been implemented in COMSOL Multiphysics software, the approach presented for implementing the equations is completely new and has fundamental advantages over the implementation of the previous approach, and does not require coding and can be easily implemented in a finite element software. The results of the simulation showed that the thickness of the ventricular walls increases and the volume of the ventricular chambers decreases. The mentioned results are consistent with the clinical observations of the disease and shows that computational modeling can be used as a powerful tool to increase specialist’s knowledge of diseases that have a high mortality rate.

50Growth Of Pt/Cu(100): An Atomistic Modeling Comparison With The Pd/Cu(100) Surface Alloy
By Demarco, Gustavo, Garces, Jorge E. and Bozzolo, Guillerm
The Bozzolo, Ferrante, and Smith (BFS) method for alloys is applied to the study of Pt deposition on Cu(100). The formation of a Cu-Pt surface alloy is discussed within the framework of previous results for Pd/Cu(100). In spite of the fact that both Pd and Pt share the same basic behavior when deposited on Cu, it is seen that subtle differences become responsible for the differences in growth observed at higher cover-ages. In agreement with experiment, all the main features of Pt/Cu(100) and Pd/Cu(100) are obtained by means of a simple modeling scheme, and explained in terms of a few basic ingredients that emerge from the BFS analysis.

2Grimms' Fairy Tales
By Jacob & Wilhelm Grimm

A classic collection of oral German folklore, brought together for posterity by the scholarly brothers Grimm in the 1800s, this epitome of fairy tales includes many of the world’s best known stories. In these dark foreboding woods, you will find: Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, Rumpelstiltskin, Lily and the Lion (better known as Beauty and the Beast), and Snow White and Rose Red, among other timeless works. These tales were later heavily revised and sanitised, but here are presented closer to their grim and beloved originals. (Summary by Marlo Dianne)

3Märchen 2
By Jacob & Wilhelm Grimm

5Personal Collection of Short Tales compiled by Carmie
By Jacob & Wilhelm Grimm
This is a selection of the fairy tales (in English) written by Jacob Ludwig Carl Grimm and Wilhelm Karl Grimm in the early 19th Century. These stories are fantastical and although aimed squarely at the flexible mind of a child which can assimilate much stranger concepts than an adult they are quite dark and occasionally brutal. The stakes can be quite high as in Rumpelstiltskin where a terrible bargain is made without due regard to possible future consequences and Tom Thumb who seems forever about to be imprisoned or sliced in two.<br /><br />These are moral tales and this selection features some of the less 'grim' of those tales but they are still a 1000 times more exciting and vivid than many more modern fairy tales.<br /><br />The Gutenberg edition from which most of these stories were read contains some delightful pictures to accompany the stories. The pictures can be viewed <a href="http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/11027">here</a>. The exception to this is the story, Puss in Boots which is from an Andrew Lang collection which can be found <a href="http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/503">here</a>. (summary by Jimmowatt)

9Grimms eventyr I udvalg
By Jacob & Wilhelm Grimm
(Summary by Kristoffer Hunsdahl)

15Kinder- und Hausmärchen (1812/15) Teil 1
By Jacob & Wilhelm Grimm
Their Labours, Perils, and Achievements
By George Grimm
"The Story of the Exploration of Australia is one which we cannot willingly let die. There are many reasons for keeping alive the remembrance of such heroic deeds. It is due to the memory of those men who took their lives in their hands, and, in many cases, laid their bones in the desert; it is an act of gratitude on our part, who have entered on their labours; and it is a kind of information indispensable to every Australian who desires to know the history of his country." - Summary from the Author's Preface
