In the present paper the classical point symmetry analysis is extended from partial differential to functional differential equations with functional derivatives. In order to perform the group analysis and deal with the functional derivatives we extend the quantities such as infinitesimal transformations, prolongations and invariant solutions. For the sake of example the procedure is applied to the continuum limit of the heat equation. The method can further lead to significant applications in statistical physics and fluid dynamics.

4Application Of Lie-group Symmetry Analysis To An Infinite Hierarchy Of Differential Equations At The Example Of First Order ODEs

This study will explicitly demonstrate by example that an unrestricted infinite and forward recursive hierarchy of differential equations must be identified as an unclosed system of equations, despite the fact that to each unknown function in the hierarchy there exists a corresponding determined equation to which it can be bijectively mapped to. As a direct consequence, its admitted set of symmetry transformations must be identified as a weaker set of indeterminate equivalence transformations. The reason is that no unique general solution can be constructed, not even in principle. Instead, infinitely many disjoint and thus independent general solution manifolds exist. This is in clear contrast to a closed system of differential equations that only allows for a single and thus unique general solution manifold, which, by definition, covers all possible particular solutions this system can admit. Herein, different first order Riccati-ODEs serve as an example, but this analysis is not restricted to them. All conclusions drawn in this study will translate to any first order or higher order ODEs as well as to any PDEs.

5Group Analysis Of Differential Equations And Generalized Functions

We present an extension of the methods of classical Lie group analysis of differential equations to equations involving generalized functions (in particular: distributions). A suitable framework for such a generalization is provided by Colombeau's theory of algebras of generalized functions. We show that under some mild conditions on the differential equations, symmetries of classical solutions remain symmetries for generalized solutions. Moreover, we introduce a generalization of the infinitesimal methods of group analysis that allows to compute symmetries of linear and nonlinear differential equations containing generalized function terms. Thereby, the group generators and group actions may be given by generalized functions themselves.

It is shown that the renormalization group (RG) method for global analysis can be formulated in the context of the classical theory of envelopes: Several examples from partial differential equations are analyzed. The amplitude equations which are usually derived by the reductive perturbation theory are shown to be naturally derived as the equations describing the envelopes of the local solutions obtained in the perturbation theory.
