1Microsoft Research Audio 104501: Grid Computing Using .NET

By

The broad goal of our WSRF.NET project at the University of Virginia is to facilitate Grid computing on the .NET platform. In this talk, we give an update on our progress in exploiting and extending the .NET/Windows platform for Grid Computing – including our recent support for GridFTP on .NET, an OGSA-based Authorization Service based on Windows, and our alternative software stack for OGSA-based grids (based on WS-Transfer, WS-Eventing, etc.). The talk culminates with a live *demo* of how we have integrated this support for Grids on .NET/Windows with the Globus toolkit to form the basis for the UVa Campus Grid (UVaCG). ©2005 Microsoft Corporation. 2Implicit Schemes And Parallel Computing In Unstructured Grid CFD

By

The development of implicit schemes for obtaining steady state solutions to the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations on unstructured grids is outlined. Applications are presented that compare the convergence characteristics of various implicit methods. Next, the development of explicit and implicit schemes to compute unsteady flows on unstructured grids is discussed. Next, the issues involved in parallelizing finite volume schemes on unstructured meshes in an MIMD (multiple instruction/multiple data stream) fashion are outlined. Techniques for partitioning unstructured grids among processors and for extracting parallelism in explicit and implicit solvers are discussed. Finally, some dynamic load balancing ideas, which are useful in adaptive transient computations, are presented.

5Predicting Efficiency In Master-slave Grid Computing Systems

By

This work reports a quantitative analysis to predicting the efficiency of distributed computing running in three models of complex networks: Barab\'asi-Albert, Erd\H{o}s-R\'enyi and Watts-Strogatz. A master/slave computing model is simulated. A node is selected as master and distributes tasks among the other nodes (the clients). Topological measurements associated with the master node (e.g. its degree or betwenness centrality) are extracted and considered as predictors of the total execution time. It is found that the closeness centrality provides the best alternative. The effect of network size was also investigated.

7NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20030003699: The Computing And Data Grid Approach: Infrastructure For Distributed Science Applications

By

With the advent of Grids - infrastructure for using and managing widely distributed computing and data resources in the science environment - there is now an opportunity to provide a standard, large-scale, computing, data, instrument, and collaboration environment for science that spans many different projects and provides the required infrastructure and services in a relatively uniform and supportable way. Grid technology has evolved over the past several years to provide the services and infrastructure needed for building 'virtual' systems and organizations. We argue that Grid technology provides an excellent basis for the creation of the integrated environments that can combine the resources needed to support the large- scale science projects located at multiple laboratories and universities. We present some science case studies that indicate that a paradigm shift in the process of science will come about as a result of Grids providing transparent and secure access to advanced and integrated information and technologies infrastructure: powerful computing systems, large-scale data archives, scientific instruments, and collaboration tools. These changes will be in the form of services that can be integrated with the user's work environment, and that enable uniform and highly capable access to these computers, data, and instruments, regardless of the location or exact nature of these resources. These services will integrate transient-use resources like computing systems, scientific instruments, and data caches (e.g., as they are needed to perform a simulation or analyze data from a single experiment); persistent-use resources. such as databases, data catalogues, and archives, and; collaborators, whose involvement will continue for the lifetime of a project or longer. While we largely address large-scale science in this paper, Grids, particularly when combined with Web Services, will address a broad spectrum of science scenarios. both large and small scale.

8Computing Eigenfunctions On The Koch Snowflake: A New Grid And Symmetry

By

In this paper we numerically solve the eigenvalue problem $\Delta u + \lambda u = 0$ on the fractal region defined by the Koch Snowflake, with zero-Dirichlet or zero-Neumann boundary conditions. The Laplacian with boundary conditions is approximated by a large symmetric matrix. The eigenvalues and eigenvectors of this matrix are computed by ARPACK. We impose the boundary conditions in a way that gives improved accuracy over the previous computations of Lapidus, Neuberger, Renka & Griffith. We extrapolate the results for grid spacing $h$ to the limit $h \rightarrow 0$ in order to estimate eigenvalues of the Laplacian and compare our results to those of Lapdus et al. We analyze the symmetry of the region to explain the multiplicity-two eigenvalues, and present a canonical choice of the two eigenfunctions that span each two-dimensional eigenspace.

13NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20120000834: 10-100 Gbps Offload NIC For WAN, NLR, And Grid Computing

By

An extremely fast offload engine system has been developed that operates at 60 Gigabits per second (Gbps), and has scalability to 100 Gbps full-duplex (f-d). This system is based on unique coding and architecture derived from splintered UDP (User Datagram Protocol) offload technology, resulting in unique FPGA (field programmable gate array) intellectual property core and firmware. This innovation improves the networking speed of supercomputer clusters by providing an ultra-fast network protocol processing offload from a CPU (central processing unit) by inserting an offload engine into a host backplane and network connections. This runs on protocol firmware.

15From Quantity To Quality: Massive Molecular Dynamics Simulation Of Nanostructures Under Plastic Deformation In Desktop And Service Grid Distributed Computing Infrastructure

By

The distributed computing infrastructure (DCI) on the basis of BOINC and EDGeS-bridge technologies for high-performance distributed computing is used for porting the sequential molecular dynamics (MD) application to its parallel version for DCI with Desktop Grids (DGs) and Service Grids (SGs). The actual metrics of the working DG-SG DCI were measured, and the normal distribution of host performances, and signs of log-normal distributions of other characteristics (CPUs, RAM, and HDD per host) were found. The practical feasibility and high efficiency of the MD simulations on the basis of DG-SG DCI were demonstrated during the experiment with the massive MD simulations for the large quantity of aluminum nanocrystals ($\sim10^2$-$10^3$). Statistical analysis (Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, moment analysis, and bootstrapping analysis) of the defect density distribution over the ensemble of nanocrystals had shown that change of plastic deformation mode is followed by the qualitative change of defect density distribution type over ensemble of nanocrystals. Some limitations (fluctuating performance, unpredictable availability of resources, etc.) of the typical DG-SG DCI were outlined, and some advantages (high efficiency, high speedup, and low cost) were demonstrated. Deploying on DG DCI allows to get new scientific $\it{quality}$ from the simulated $\it{quantity}$ of numerous configurations by harnessing sufficient computational power to undertake MD simulations in a wider range of physical parameters (configurations) in a much shorter timeframe.

16D0 Top Quark Results And Their Dependence On Successful Grid Computing

By

The heaviest known Fermion particle -- the top quark -- was discovered at Fermilab in the first run of the Tevatron in 1995. However, besides its mere existence one needs to study its properties precisely in order to verify or falsify the predictions of the Standard Model. With the top quark's extremely high mass and short lifetime such measurements probe yet unexplored regions of the theory and bring us closer to solving the open fundamental questions of our universe of elementary particles such as why three families of quarks and leptons exist and why their masses differ so dramatically. To perform these measurements hundreds of millions of recorded proton-antiproton collisions must be reconstructed and filtered to extract the few top quarks produced. Simulated background and signal events with full detector response need to be generated and reconstructed to validate and understand the results. Since the start of the second run of the Tevatron the D0 collaboration has brought Grid computing to its aid for the production of simulated events. Data processing on the Grid has recently been added and thereby enabled us to effectively triple the amount of data available with the highest quality reconstruction methods. We will present recent top quark results D0 obtained from these improved data and explain how they benefited from the availability of computing resources on the Grid.

17Computing Motion With 3D Memristive Grid

By

Computing the relative motion of objects is an important navigation task that we routinely perform by relying on inherently unreliable biological cells in the retina. The non-linear and adaptive response of memristive devices make them excellent building blocks for realizing complex synaptic-like architectures that are common in the human retina. Here, we introduce a novel memristive thresholding scheme that facilitates the detection of moving edges. In addition, a double-layered 3-D memristive network is employed for modeling the motion computations that take place in both the Outer Plexiform Layer (OPL) and Inner Plexiform Layer (IPL) that enables the detection of on-center and off-center transient responses. Applying the transient detection results, it is shown that it is possible to generate an estimation of the speed and direction a moving object.

22IP Over P2P: Enabling Self-configuring Virtual IP Networks For Grid Computing

By

Peer-to-peer (P2P) networks have mostly focused on task oriented networking, where networks are constructed for single applications, i.e. file-sharing, DNS caching, etc. In this work, we introduce IPOP, a system for creating virtual IP networks on top of a P2P overlay. IPOP enables seamless access to Grid resources spanning multiple domains by aggregating them into a virtual IP network that is completely isolated from the physical network. The virtual IP network provided by IPOP supports deployment of existing IP-based protocols over a robust, self-configuring P2P overlay. We present implementation details as well as experimental measurement results taken from LAN, WAN, and Planet-Lab tests.

23An Overview Of A Grid Architecture For Scientific Computing

By

This document gives an overview of a Grid testbed architecture proposal for the NorduGrid project. The aim of the project is to establish an inter-Nordic testbed facility for implementation of wide area computing and data handling. The architecture is supposed to define a Grid system suitable for solving data intensive problems at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. We present the various architecture components needed for such a system. After that we go on to give a description of the dynamics by showing the task flow.

Erikkson showed that singular value decomposition(SVD) of flattenings determined a partition of a phylogenetic tree to be a split. In this paper, based on his work, we develop new statistically consistent algorithms fit for grid computing to construct a phylogenetic tree by computing SVD of flattenings with the small fixed number of rows.

28Towards Formal Interaction-Based Models Of Grid Computing Infrastructures

By

Grid computing (GC) systems are large-scale virtual machines, built upon a massive pool of resources (processing time, storage, software) that often span multiple distributed domains. Concurrent users interact with the grid by adding new tasks; the grid is expected to assign resources to tasks in a fair, trustworthy way. These distinctive features of GC systems make their specification and verification a challenging issue. Although prior works have proposed formal approaches to the specification of GC systems, a precise account of the interaction model which underlies resource sharing has not been yet proposed. In this paper, we describe ongoing work aimed at filling in this gap. Our approach relies on (higher-order) process calculi: these core languages for concurrency offer a compositional framework in which GC systems can be precisely described and potentially reasoned about.

31The Use Of The GARP Genetic Algorithm And Internet Grid Computing In The Lifemapper World Atlas Of Species Biodiversity

By

Lifemapper (http://www.lifemapper.org) is a predictive electronic atlas of the Earth's biological biodiversity. Using a screensaver version of the GARP genetic algorithm for modeling species distributions, Lifemapper harnesses vast computing resources through 'volunteers' PCs similar to SETI@home, to develop models of the distribution of the worlds fauna and flora. The Lifemapper project's primary goal is to provide an up to date and comprehensive database of species maps and prediction models (i.e. a fauna and flora of the world) using available data on species' locations. The models are developed using specimen data from distributed museum collections and an archive of geospatial environmental correlates. A central server maintains a dynamic archive of species maps and models for research, outreach to the general community, and feedback to museum data providers. This paper is a case study in the role, use and justification of a genetic algorithm in development of large-scale environmental informatics infrastructure.

32Enhancing Power Quality In Solar-wind Grid-connected Systems Through Soft Computing Techniques

This work intends to improve estimates of solar and wind energy generation through the application of resilient backpropagation control and substantial power evolution strategy (SPES) algorithms. In comparison to particle swarm optimization and genetic algorithms, the main goal is to minimize predicting mistakes. These methods increase grid reliability by lowering total harmonic distortion (THD) and improving power quality when integrated with the IEEE-9 bus standard. In order to evaluate the hybrid system's transient and steady-state reactions, the study also highlights the importance of bolstering operation and control. A revolutionary deep learning-based approach is also suggested for predicting wind and solar hybrid energy. The power grid's efficiency and dependability in handling renewable energy sources have significantly improved, according to the results.

36DSMC Grid Methodologies For Computing Low-Density, Hypersonic Flows About Reusable Launch Vehicles

By

Two different grid methodologies are studied for application to DSMC simulations about reusable launch vehicles. One method uses an unstructured, tetrahedral grid while the other uses a structured, variable-resolution Cartesian grid. The relative merits of each method are discussed in terms of accuracy, computational efficiency, and overall ease of use. Both methods are applied to the computation of a low-density, hypersonic flow about a winged single-stage-to-orbit reusable launch vehicle concept at conditions corresponding to an altitude of 120 km. Both methods are shown to give comparable results for both surface and flowfield quantities as well as for the overall aerodynamic behavior. For the conditions simulated, the flowfield about the vehicle is very rarefied but the DSMC simulations show significant departure from free-molecular predictions for the surface friction and heat transfer as well as certain aerodynamic quantities.

By

Security is important issue in every aspect in today's world if you are using the networks. Various algorithms are there to secure your network so that unauthorized user can't breach into your accounts. SO for this authentication and authorization plays an important role but apart from these use of various encryption algorithms are there for grid data security. By using these algorithms you can easily secure your network and it will also enhance the performance of our grid networks. In this paper model has been designed for grid security that is been implemented on network Simulator and the performance has been measured with the previous models. By using various cryptographic algorithms the efficiency and the packed delivery ratio is increased incredibly. The Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider in Tsukuba, Japan, will start physics data taking in 2018 and will accumulate 50 ab$^{-1}$ of e$^{+}$e$^{-}$ collision data, about 50 times larger than the data set of the earlier Belle experiment. The computing requirements of Belle II are comparable to those of a run I high-p$_T$ LHC experiment. Computing will make full use of such grids in North America, Asia, Europe, and Australia, and high speed networking. Results of an initial MC simulation campaign with 3 ab$^{-1}$ equivalent luminosity will be described
