1COSMOGRAIL: The COSmological MOnitoring Of GRAvItational Lenses VI. Redshift Of The Lensing Galaxy In Seven Gravitationally Lensed Quasars
By A. Eigenbrod, F. Courbin and G. Meylan
Aims: The knowledge of the redshift of a lensing galaxy that produces multiple images of a background quasar is essential to any subsequent modeling, whether related to the determination of the Hubble constant H_0 or to the mass profile of the lensing galaxy. We present the results of our ongoing spectroscopic observations of gravitationally lensed quasars in order to measure the redshift of their lensing galaxies. We report on the determination of the lens redshift in seven gravitationally lensed systems. Methods: Our deep VLT/FORS1 spectra are spatially deconvolved in order to separate the spectrum of the lensing galaxies from the glare of the much brighter quasar images. Our observing strategy involves observations in Multi-Object-Spectroscopy (MOS) mode which allows the simultaneous observation of the target and of several crucial PSF and flux calibration stars. The advantage of this method over traditional long-slit observations is that it allows a much more reliable extraction and flux calibration of the spectra. Results: We obtain the first reliable spectra of the lensing galaxies in six lensed quasars: FBQ 0951+2635 (z=0.260), BRI 0952-0115 (z=0.632), HE 2149-2745 (z=0.603), Q 0142-100 (z=0.491), SDSS J0246-0825 (z=0.723), and SDSS J0806+2006 (z=0.573). The last 3 redshifts also correspond to the MgII doublet seen in absorption in the quasar spectra at the lens redshift. Our spectroscopic redshifts of HE 2149-2745 and FBQ 0951+2635 are higher than previously reported, which means that H_0 estimates from these two systems must be revised to higher values. Finally, we reanalyse our spectra of Q 1355-2257 and find MgII in absorption at z=0.702, confirming our previous redshift estimate. The spectra of all lenses are typical of early-type galaxies.

2The Gravitational Lensing In Redshift-space Correlation Functions Of Galaxies And Quasars
By Takahiko Matsubara
The gravitational lensing, as well as the velocity field and the cosmological light-cone warp, changes the observed correlation function of high-redshift objects. We present an analytical expression of 3D correlation function, simultaneously including those three effects. When two objects are separated over several hundreds Mpc along a line of sight, the observed correlation function is dominated by the effect of gravitational lensing rather than the intrinsic clustering. For a canonical lambda-CDM model, the lensing signals in the galaxy-galaxy and galaxy-QSO correlations are beyond noise levels in large-scale redshift surveys like the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.

3Observations Of Radio-quiet Quasars At 10mas Resolution By Use Of Gravitational Lensing
By Neal Jackson, Amitpal S. Tagore, Carl Roberts, Dominique Sluse, Hannah Stacey, Hector Vives-Arias, Olaf Wucknitz and Filomena Volino
We present VLA detections of radio emission in four four-image gravitational lens systems with quasar sources: HS0810+2554, RXJ0911+0511, HE0435$-$1223 and SDSSJ0924+0219, and e-MERLIN observations of two of the systems. The first three are detected at a high level of significance, and SDSS J0924+0219 is detected. HS0810+2554 is resolved, allowing us for the first time to achieve 10-mas resolution of the source frame in the structure of a radio quiet quasar. The others are unresolved or marginally resolved. All four objects are among the faintest radio sources yet detected, with intrinsic flux densities in the range 1-5$\mu$Jy; such radio objects, if unlensed, will only be observable routinely with the Square Kilometre Array. The observations of HS0810+2554, which is also detected with e-MERLIN, strongly suggest the presence of a mini-AGN, with a radio core and milliarcsecond scale jet. The flux densities of the lensed images in all but HE0435-1223 are consistent with smooth galaxy lens models without the requirement for smaller-scale substructure in the model, although some interesting anomalies are seen between optical and radio flux densities. These are probably due to microlensing effects in the optical.

4COSMOGRAIL: The COSmological MOnitoring Of GRAvItational Lenses III. Redshift Of The Lensing Galaxy In Eight Gravitationally Lensed Quasars
By A. Eigenbrod, F. Courbin, G. Meylan, C. Vuissoz, P. Magain and .
Aims: We measure the redshift of the lensing galaxy in eight gravitationally lensed quasars in view of determining the Hubble parameter H_0 from the time delay method. Methods: Deep VLT/FORS1 spectra of lensed quasars are spatially deconvolved in order to separate the spectrum of the lensing galaxies from the glare of the much brighter quasar images. A new observing strategy is devised. It involves observations in Multi-Object-Spectroscopy (MOS) which allows the simultaneous observation of the target and of several PSF and flux calibration stars. The advantage of this method over traditional long-slit observations is a much more reliable extraction and flux calibration of the spectra. Results: For the first time we measure the redshift of the lensing galaxy in three multiply-imaged quasars: SDSS J1138+0314 (z=0.445), SDSS J1226-0006 (z=0.517), SDSS J1335+0118 (z=0.440), and we give a tentative estimate of the redshift of the lensing galaxy in Q 1355-2257 (z=0.701). We confirm four previously measured redshifts: HE 0047-1756 (z=0.407), HE 0230-2130 (z=0.523), HE 0435-1223 (z=0.454) and WFI J2033-4723 (z=0.661). In addition, we determine the redshift of the second lensing galaxy in HE 0230-2130 (z=0.526). The spectra of all lens galaxies are typical for early-type galaxies, except for the second lensing galaxy in HE 0230-2130 which displays prominent [OII] emission.

5Gravitational Lensing Of The SDSS High-Redshift Quasars
By Stuart Wyithe and Abraham Loeb
We predict the effects of gravitational lensing on the color-selected flux-limited samples of z~4.3 and z>5.8 quasars, recently published by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Our main findings are: (i) The lensing probability should be 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than for conventional surveys. The expected fraction of multiply-imaged quasars is highly sensitive to redshift and the uncertain slope of the bright end of the luminosity function, beta_h. For beta_h=2.58 (3.43) we find that at z~4.3 and i*

7Faint Galaxies Around Quasars At Z=1 And Gravitational Lensing Of Distant Objects
By J. W. Fried
Very deep imaging data of three optically luminous radio-loud quasars with redshifts between z=0.9 and z=1.36 are presented. The data are complete for galaxies down to R=26. There is no evidence for excess numbers of galaxies around the quasars; foreground galaxy clusters are excluded by the data as well as clusters with richness classes greater than 1 associated with the quasars. We find clear evidence for gravitational lensing for two quasars. It is further shown that due to the high surface density of galaxies all distant (z>1) objects are moderately affected by gravitational lensing; the amplification factors are estimated to be in the range 1.1-1.5.

8GRAVITATIONAL LENSING OF QUASARS BY THEIR DAMPED LYMAN-ALPHA ABSORBERS
By Matthias Bartelmann and Abraham Loeb
Damped Lyman-alpha absorbers are believed to be associated with galactic disks. We show that gravitational lensing can therefore affect the statistics of these systems. First, the magnification bias due to lensing raises faint QSOs above a given magnitude threshold and thereby enhances the probability for observing damped absorption systems. Second, the bending of light rays from the source effectively limits the minimum impact parameter of the line-of-sight relative to the center of the absorber, thus providing an upper cut-off to the observed neutral hydrogen (HI) column density. The combination of these effects yields a pronounced peak in the observed abundance of absorbers with high column densities (>2*10^{21} cm^{-2}) and low redshifts (z 10^{21} cm^{-2} and redshifts 0.5
