2Fracture Of Granular Materials Composed Of Arbitrary Grain Shapes: A New Cohesive Interaction Model

By

Discrete Element Methods (DEM) are a useful tool to model the fracture of cohesive granular materials. For this kind of application, simple particle shapes (discs in 2D, spheres in 3D) are usually employed. However, dealing with more general particle shapes allows to account for the natural heterogeneity of grains inside real materials. We present a discrete model allowing to mimic cohesion between contacting or non-contacting particles whatever their shape in 2D and 3D. The cohesive interactions are made of cohesion points placed on interacting particles, with the aim of representing a cohesive phase lying between the grains. Contact situations are solved according to unilateral contact and Coulomb friction laws. In order to test the developed model, 2D unixial compression simulations are performed. Numerical results show the ability of the model to mimic the macroscopic behavior of an aggregate grain subject to axial compression, as well as fracture initiation and propagation. A study of the influence of model and sample parameters provides important information on the ability of the model to reproduce various behaviors.

3Micro-macro Transition And Simplified Contact Models For Wet Granular Materials

By

Wet granular materials in a quasi-static steady state shear flow have been studied with discrete particle simulations. Macroscopic quantities, consistent with the conservation laws of continuum theory, are obtained by time averaging and spatial coarse-graining. Initial studies involve understanding the effect of liquid content and liquid properties like the surface tension on the macroscopic quantities. Two parameters of the liquid bridge contact model have been studied as the constitutive parameters that define the structure of this model (i) the rupture distance of the liquid bridge model, which is proportional to the liquid content, and (ii) the maximum adhesive force, as controlled by the surface tension of the liquid. Subsequently a correlation is developed between these micro parameters and the steady state cohesion in the limit of zero confining pressure. Furthermore, as second result, the macroscopic torque measured at the walls, which is an experimentally accessible parameter, is predicted from our simulation results as a dependence on the micro-parameters. Finally, the steady state cohesion of a realistic non-linear liquid bridge contact model scales well with the steady state cohesion for a simpler linearized irreversible contact model with the same maximum adhesive force and equal energy dissipated per contact.

4Continuum Modeling Of Mechanically-induced Creep In Dense Granular Materials

By

Recently, a new nonlocal granular rheology was successfully used to predict steady granular flows, including grain-size-dependent shear features, in a wide variety of flow configurations, including all variations of the split-bottom cell. A related problem in granular flow is that of mechanically-induced creep, in which shear deformation in one region of a granular medium fluidizes its entirety, including regions far from the sheared zone, effectively erasing the yield condition everywhere. This enables creep deformation when a force is applied in the nominally quiescent region through an intruder such as a cylindrical or spherical probe. We show that the nonlocal fluidity model is capable of capturing this phenomenology. Specifically, we explore creep of a circular intruder in a two-dimensional annular Couette cell and show that the model captures all salient features observed in experiments, including both the rate-independent nature of creep for sufficiently slow driving rates and the faster-than-linear increase in the creep speed with the force applied to the intruder.

A test cell for Mechanics of Granular Materials (MGM) experiment is tested for long-term storage with water in the system as plarned for STS-107. This view shows the top of the sand column with the metal platten removed. Sand and soil grains have faces that can cause friction as they roll and slide against each other, or even cause sticking and form small voids between grains. This complex behavior can cause soil to behave like a liquid under certain conditions such as earthquakes or when powders are handled in industrial processes. Mechanics of Granular Materials (MGM) experiments aboard the Space Shuttle use the microgravity of space to simulate this behavior under conditons that cannot be achieved in laboratory tests on Earth. MGM is shedding light on the behavior of fine-grain materials under low effective stresses. Applications include earthquake engineering, granular flow technologies (such as powder feed systems for pharmaceuticals and fertilizers), and terrestrial and planetary geology. Nine MGM specimens have flown on two Space Shuttle flights. Another three are scheduled to fly on STS-107. The principal investigator is Stein Sture of the University of Colorado at Boulder. The heart of the MGM experiment is a set of six test cells, each containing a sleeve of 2.8 lbs. of Ottawa F-75 banding sand. Because Ottawa sand is widely used in the civil engineering experiments and evaluations, its use on MGM will allow results to be compared directly with results already obtained on Earth. The soil specimen is contained in a latex sleeve that is 0.3 mm thick and printed with a grid pattern so cameras can record changes in shape and position. Each specimen is contained in a test cell shaped like an equilateral prism and includes a Lexan jacket sandwiched between metal end plates cornected by guide rods. During the experiment, a test cell is held on a rigid observation pad mounted between an array of three CCD cameras and banks of small light-emitting diodes. The MGM video control system electronically interleaves the images for a video recorder. MGM was designed and developed by Sandia National Laboratories and the U.S. Department of Energy in Albuquerque, N.M.

11Enhanced Micropolar Model For Wave Propagation In Ordered Granular Materials

By

The vibrational properties of a face-centered cubic granular crystal of monodisperse particles are predicted using a discrete model as well as two micropolar models, first the classical Cosserat and second an enhanced Cosserat-type model, that properly takes into account all degrees of freedom at the contacts between the particles. The continuum models are derived from the discrete model via a micro-macro transition of the discrete relative displacements and particle rotations to the respective continuum field variables. Next, only the long wavelength approximations of the models are compared and, considering the discrete model as reference, the Cosserat model shows inconsistent predictions of the bulk wave dispersion relations. This can be explained by an insufficient modeling of sliding mode of particle interactions in the Cosserat model. An enhanced micropolar model is proposed including only one new elastic tensor from the more complete second order gradient micropolar theory. This enhanced micropolar model then involves the minimum number of elastic constants to consistently predict the dispersion relations in the long wavelength limit.

12Absence Of `fragility' And Mechanical Response Of Jammed Granular Materials

By

We perform molecular dynamic (MD) simulations of frictional non-thermal particles driven by an externally applied shear stress. After the system jams following a transient flow, we probe its mechanical response in order to clarify whether the resulting solid is 'fragile'. We find the system to respond elastically and isotropically to small perturbations of the shear stress, suggesting absence of fragility. These results are interpreted in terms of the energy landscape of dissipative systems. For the same values of the control parameters, we check the behaviour of the system during a stress cycle. Increasing the maximum stress value, a crossover from a visco-elastic to a plastic regime is observed.

13The Role Of Friction In Compaction And Segregation Of Granular Materials

By

We investigate the role of friction in compaction and segregation of granular materials by combining Edwards' thermodynamic hypothesis with a simple mechanical model and mean-field based geometrical calculations. Systems of single species with large friction coefficients are found to compact less. Binary mixtures of grains differing in frictional properties are found to segregate at high compactivities, in contrary to granular mixtures differing in size, which segregate at low compactivities. A phase diagram for segregation vs. friction coefficients of the two species is generated. Finally, the characteristics of segregation are related directly to the volume fraction without the explicit use of the yet unclear notion of compactivity.

14Time Of Avalanche Mixing Of Granular Materials In A Half Filled Rotated Drum

By

The avalanche mixing of granular solids in a slowly rotated 2D upright drum is studied. We demonstrate that the account of the difference $\delta$ between the angle of marginal stability and the angle of repose of the granular material leads to a restricted value of the mixing time $\tau$ for a half filled drum. The process of mixing is described by a linear discrete difference equation. We show that the mixing looks like linear diffusion of fractions with the diffusion coefficient vanishing when $\delta$ is an integer part of $\pi$. Introduction of fluctuations of $\delta$ supresses the singularities of $\tau(\delta)$ and smoothes the dependence $\tau(\delta)$.

15DTIC ADA254820: Experiments, Theory, And Simulation On The Evolution Of Fabric In Granular Materials

By

In this research, we have attempted to characterize the anisotropy in particle arrangement and particle interactions that develop when a granular material is deformed and to determine the influence of this anisotropy on the subsequent behavior of the material. The research has dealt with the behavior of an idealized granular material consisting of lass spheres and has involved the close interaction between physical experiments, numerical simulations, and the development of theory. We have focused on: (1) Understanding the relationship between the developing anisotropy of the material and the changes in volume observed in deformations in which the mean stress is held constant. In particular, we have considered the volume change of a hollow cylindrical sample in triaxial compression and extension; (2) Using elastic waves to probe the evolution of the internal structure of the granular material as it is being deformed; and (3) Developing constitutive relations for general stress paths in the triaxial/torsional device through the combined efforts of theoretical modeling and numerical simulation.

16The Influence Of Network Topology On Sound Propagation In Granular Materials

By

Granular materials, whose features range from the particle scale to the force-chain scale to the bulk scale, are usually modeled as either particulate or continuum materials. In contrast with either of these approaches, network representations are natural for the simultaneous examination of microscopic, mesoscopic, and macroscopic features. In this paper, we treat granular materials as spatially-embedded networks in which the nodes (particles) are connected by weighted edges obtained from contact forces. We test a variety of network measures for their utility in helping to describe sound propagation in granular networks and find that network diagnostics can be used to probe particle-, curve-, domain-, and system-scale structures in granular media. In particular, diagnostics of meso-scale network structure are reproducible across experiments, are correlated with sound propagation in this medium, and can be used to identify potentially interesting size scales. We also demonstrate that the sensitivity of network diagnostics depends on the phase of sound propagation. In the injection phase, the signal propagates systemically, as indicated by correlations with the network diagnostic of global efficiency. In the scattering phase, however, the signal is better predicted by meso-scale community structure, suggesting that the acoustic signal scatters over local geographic neighborhoods. Collectively, our results demonstrate how the force network of a granular system is imprinted on transmitted waves.

17Trajectory Entanglement In Dense Granular Materials

By

The particle-scale dynamics of granular materials have commonly been characterized by the self-diffusion coefficient $D$. However, this measure discards the collective and topological information known to be an important characteristic of particle trajectories in dense systems. Direct measurement of the entanglement of particle space-time trajectories can be obtained via the topological braid entropy $\Sbraid$, which has previously been used to quantify mixing efficiency in fluid systems. Here, we investigate the utility of $\Sbraid$ in characterizing the dynamics of a dense, driven granular material at packing densities near the static jamming point $\phi_J$. From particle trajectories measured within a two-dimensional granular material, we typically observe that $\Sbraid$ is well-defined and extensive. However, for systems where $\phi \gtrsim 0.79$, we find that $\Sbraid$ (like $D$) is not well-defined, signifying that these systems are not ergodic on the experimental timescale. Both $\Sbraid$ and $D$ decrease with either increasing packing density or confining pressure, independent of the applied boundary condition. The related braiding factor provides a means to identify multi-particle phenomena such as collective rearrangements. We discuss possible uses for this measure in characterizing granular systems.

18Interplay Of Coulomb Blockade And Ferroelectricity In Nano-Granular Materials

By

We study electron transport properties of composite ferroelectrics --- materials consisting of metallic grains embedded in a ferroelectric matrix. In particular, we calculate the conductivity in a wide range of temperatures and electric fields, showing pronounced hysteretic behavior. In weak fields, electron cotunneling is the main transport mechanism. In this case, we show that the ferroelectric matrix strongly influences the transport properties through two effects: i) the dependence of the Coulomb gap on the dielectric permittivity of the ferroelectric matrix, which in turn is controlled by temperature and external field; and ii) the dependence of the tunneling matrix elements on the electric polarization of the ferroelectric matrix, which can be tuned by temperature and applied electric field as well. In the case of strong electric fields, the Coulomb gap is suppressed and only the second mechanism is important. Our results are important for i) thermometers for precise temperature measurements and ii) ferrroelectric memristors.

19An Adaptive Hierarchical Domain Decomposition Method For Parallel Contact Dynamics Simulations Of Granular Materials

By

A fully parallel version of the contact dynamics (CD) method is presented in this paper. For large enough systems, 100% efficiency has been demonstrated for up to 256 processors using a hierarchical domain decomposition with dynamic load balancing. The iterative scheme to calculate the contact forces is left domain-wise sequential, with data exchange after each iteration step, which ensures its stability. The number of additional iterations required for convergence by the partially parallel updates at the domain boundaries becomes negligible with increasing number of particles, which allows for an effective parallelization. Compared to the sequential implementation, we found no influence of the parallelization on simulation results.

21Self-organization, Localization Of Shear Bands And Aging In Loose Granular Materials

By

We introduce a mesoscopic model for the formation and evolution of shear bands in loose granular media. Numerical simulations reveal that the system undergoes a non-trivial self-organization process which is governed by the motion of the shear band and the consequent restructuring of the material along it. High density regions are built up, progressively confining the shear bands in localized regions. This results in an inhomogeneous aging of the material with a very slow increase in the mean density, displaying an unusual glassy like system-size dependence.

22Force Fluctuations In Granular Materials

By

Force fluctuations in granular materials are investigated. A continuum equation is derived starting from a discrete model proposed in the literature. The influence of boundary conditions is investigated. For periodic boundary conditions the average weight is found to increase linearly with depth while it saturates to a constant value for absorbing boundary conditions, which models the existence of walls. The scale dependencies of the saturation weight, the saturation depth and the average squared fluctuations are obtained. The analytical results are compared with previous works and with numerical simulations in one dimension.

23Diffusion As Mixing Mechanism In Granular Materials

By

We present several numerical results on granular mixtures. In particular, we examine the efficiency of diffusion as a mixing mechanism in these systems. The collisions are inelastic and to compensate the energy loss, we thermalize the grains by adding a random force. Starting with a segregated system, we show that uniform agitation (heating) leads to a uniform mixture of grains of different sizes. We define a characteristic mixing time, $\tau_{mix}$, and study theoretically and numerically its dependence on other parameters like the density. We examine a model for bidisperse systems for which we can calculate some physical quantities. We also examine the effect of a temperature gradient and demonstrate the appearance of an expected segregation.

24Hard-sphere Limit Of Soft-sphere Model For Granular Materials: Stiffness Dependence Of Steady Granular Flow

By

Dynamical behavior of steady granular flow is investigated numerically in the inelastic hard sphere limit of the soft sphere model. We find distinctively different limiting behaviors for the two flow regimes, i.e., the collisional flow and the frictional flow. In the collisional flow, the hard sphere limit is straightforward; the number of collisions per particle per unit time converges to a finite value and the total contact time fraction with other particles goes to zero. For the frictional flow, however, we demonstrate that the collision rate diverges as the power of the particle stiffness so that the time fraction of the multiple contacts remains finite even in the hard sphere limit although the contact time fraction for the binary collisions tends to zero.

25A Model For The Propagation Of Sound In Granular Materials

By

This paper presents a simple ball-and-spring model for the propagation of small amplitude vibrations in a granular material. In this model, the positional disorder in the sample is ignored and the particles are placed on the vertices of a square lattice. The inter-particle forces are modeled as linear springs, with the only disorder in the system coming from a random distribution of spring constants. Despite its apparent simplicity, this model is able to reproduce the complex frequency response seen in measurements of sound propagation in a granular system. In order to understand this behavior, the role of the resonance modes of the system is investigated. Finally, this simple model is generalized to include relaxation behavior in the force network -- a behavior which is also seen in real granular materials. This model gives quantitative agreement with experimental observations of relaxation.

26Force Chain Splitting In Granular Materials: A Mechanism For Large Scale Pseudo-elastic Behaviour

By

We investigate both numerically and analytically the effect of strong disorder on the large scale properties of the hyperbolic equations for stresses proposed in \protect\cite{bcc,wcc}. The physical mechanism that we model is the local splitting of the force chains (the characteristics of the hyperbolic equation) by packing defects. In analogy with the theory of light diffusion in a turbid medium, we propose a Boltzmann-like equation to describe these processes. We show that, for isotropic packings, the resulting large scale effective equations for the stresses have exactly the same structure as those of an elastic body, despite the fact that no displacement field needs to be introduced at all. Correspondingly, the response function evolves from a two peak structure at short scales to a broad hump at large scales. We find, however, that the Poisson ratio is anomalously large and incompatible with classical elasticity theory that requires the reference state to be thermodynamically stable.

27Lubrication Effects On The Flow Of Wet Granular Materials

By

We investigate the dynamics of a partially saturated grain-liquid mixture with a rotating drum apparatus. The drum is partially filled with the mixture and then rotated about its horizontal axis. We focus on the continous avalanching regime and measure the impact of volume fraction and viscosity of the liquid on the dynamic surface angle. The inclination angle of the surface is observed to increase sharply to a peak and then decrease as a function of liquid volume fraction. The height of the peak is observed to increase with rotation rate. For higher liquid volume fractions, the inclination angle of the surface can decrease with viscosity before increasing. The viscosity where the minima occurs decreases with the rotation rate of the drum. Limited measurements of the flow depth were made, and these were observed to show only fractional changes with volume fraction and rotation speeds. We show that the qualitative features of our observations can be understood by analyzing the effect of lubrication forces on the timescale over which particles come in contact.

Key persornel in the Mechanics of Granular Materials (MGM) experiment at the University of Colorado at Boulder include Tawnya Ferbiak (software engineer), Susan Batiste (research assistant), and Christina Winkler (graduate research assistant). Sand and soil grains have faces that can cause friction as they roll and slide against each other, or even cause sticking and form small voids between grains. This complex behavior can cause soil to behave like a liquid under certain conditions such as earthquakes or when powders are handled in industrial processes. MGM experiments aboard the Space Shuttle use the microgravity of space to simulate this behavior under conditions that cannot be achieved in laboratory tests on Earth. By

Computer vision based analysis for the MGM experiment is continued and expanded into new areas. Volumetric strains of granular material triaxial test specimens have been measured from digitized images. A computer-assisted procedure is used to identify the edges of the specimen, and the edges are used in a 3-D model to estimate specimen volume. The results of this technique compare favorably to conventional measurements. A simplified model of the magnification caused by diffraction of light within the water of the test apparatus was also developed. This model yields good results when the distance between the camera and the test specimen is large compared to the specimen height. An algorithm for a more accurate 3-D magnification correction is also presented. The use of composite and RGB (red-green-blue) color cameras is discussed and potentially significant benefits from using an RGB camera are presented.

34Entropic Origin Of Stress Correlations In Granular Materials

By

We study the response of granular materials to external stress using experiment, simulation, and theory. We derive an entropic, Ginzburg-Landau functional that enforces mechanical stability and positivity of contact forces. In this framework, the elastic moduli depend only on the applied stress. A combination of this feature and the positivity constraint leads to stress correlations whose shape and magnitude are extremely sensitive to the applied stress. The predictions from the theory describe the stress correlations for both simulations and experiments semiquantitatively.

36Packing Of Compressible Granular Materials

By

3D Computer simulations and experiments are employed to study random packings of compressible spherical grains under external confining stress. Of particular interest is the rigid ball limit, which we describe as a continuous transition in which the applied stress vanishes as (\phi-\phi_c)^\beta, where \phi is the (solid phase) volume density. This transition coincides with the onset of shear rigidity. The value of \phi_c depends, for example, on whether the grains interact via only normal forces (giving rise to random close packings) or by a combination of normal and friction generated transverse forces (producing random loose packings). In both cases, near the transition, the system's response is controlled by localized force chains. As the stress increases, we characterize the system's evolution in terms of (1) the participation number, (2) the average force distribution, and (3) visualization techniques.

37Pattern Scaling In The Axial Segregation Of Granular Materials In A Rotating Tube

By

Granular mixtures frequently segregate by grain size along the axis of partially-filled, horizontal, rotating tubes. When segregation approaches saturation at the surface, a well-defined pattern of bands with wavelength $\lambda$ emerges. The long-term dynamics of the pattern involves a much slower coarsening process. We characterized the initial saturated wavelength $\lambda$ as a function of the diameter of the tube $D$ for a filling fraction of 30 %, for $1.9 {\rm cm} \leq D \leq 11.5 {\rm cm}$. We also studied the initial growth-rate of the bands as $D$ varies. We find that $\lambda/D$ is not constant, but rather increases rapidly for small $D$. The growth-rate of bands decreases with smaller $D$ and segregation is suppressed completely for sufficiently small $D$. These relatively simple features are not captured by any of the existing models of axial segregation.

38Devising A Protocol-related Statistical Mechanics Framework For Granular Materials

By

Devising a statistical mechanics framework for jammed granular materials is a challenging task as those systems do not share some important properties required to characterize them with statistical thermodynamics tools. In a recent paper [Asenjo et al. PRL, 2014], a new definition of a granular entropy, that puts the protocol used to generate the packings at its roots, has been proposed. Following up these results, it is shown that the protocol used in [Asenjo et al. PRL, 2014] can be recast as a canonical ensemble with a particular value of the temperature. Signature of gaussianity for large system sizes strongly suggests an asymptotic equivalence with a corresponding microcanonical ensemble where jammed states with certain basin volumes are sampled uniformly. We argue that this microcanonical ensemble is not Edwards' microcanonical ensemble and generalize this argument to other protocols.

39Thermoelectric Performance Of Weakly Coupled Granular Materials

By

We study thermoelectric properties of inhomogeneous nanogranular materials for weak tunneling conductance between the grains, g_t < 1. We calculate the thermopower and figure of merit taking into account the shift of the chemical potential and the asymmetry of the density of states in the vicinity of the Fermi surface. We show that the weak coupling between the grains leads to a high thermopower and low thermal conductivity resulting in relatively high values of the figure of merit on the order of one. We estimate the temperature at which the figure of merit has its maximum value for two- and three-dimensional samples. Our results are applicable for many emerging materials, including artificially self-assembled nanoparticle arrays.

41A Frictional Cosserat Model For The Slow Shearing Of Granular Materials

By

A rigid-plastic Cosserat model for slow frictional flow of granular materials, proposed by us in an earlier paper, has been used to analyze plane and cylindrical Couette flow. In this model, the hydrodynamic fields of a classical continuum are supplemented by the couple stress and the intrinsic angular velocity fields. The balance of angular momentum, which is satisfied implicitly in a classical continuum, must be enforced in a Cosserat continuum. As a result, the stress tensor could be asymmetric, and the angular velocity of a material point may differ from half the local vorticity. An important consequence of treating the granular medium as a Cosserat continuum is that it incorporates a material length scale in the model, which is absent in frictional models based on a classical continuum. Further, the Cosserat model allows determination of the velocity fields uniquely in viscometric flows, in contrast to classical frictional models. Experiments on viscometric flows of dense, slowly deforming granular materials indicate that shear is confined to a narrow region, usually a few grain diameters thick, while the remaining material is largely undeformed. This feature is captured by the present model, and the velocity profile predicted for cylindrical Couette flow is in good agreement with reported data. When the walls of the Couette cell are smoother than the granular material, the model predicts that the shear layer thickness is independent of the Couette gap $H$ when the latter is large compared to the grain diameter $d_p$. When the walls are of the same roughness as the granular material, the model predicts that the shear layer thickness varies as $(H/d_p)^{1/3}$ in the limit $(H/d_p) \gg 1$, for plane shear under gravity and cylindrical Couette flow.

42Mathematics And Mechanics Of Granular Materials

43Invited Review: Clogging Of Granular Materials In Bottlenecks

By

During the past decades, notable improvements have been achieved in the understanding of static and dynamic properties of granular materials, giving rise to appealing new concepts like jamming, force chains, non-local rheology or the inertial number. The `saltcellar' can be seen as a canonical example of the characteristic features displayed by granular materials: an apparently smooth flow is interrupted by the formation of a mesoscopic structure (arch) above the outlet that causes a quick dissipation of all the kinetic energy within the system. In this manuscript, I will give an overview of this field paying special attention to the features of statistical distributions appearing in the clogging and unclogging processes. These distributions are essential to understand the problem and allow subsequent study of topics such as the influence of particle shape, the structure of the clogging arches and the possible existence of a critical outlet size above which the outpouring will never stop. I shall finally offer some hints about general ideas that can be explored in the next few years.

44Mechanic Of Granular Materials (MGM) Investigator

By

Key persornel in the Mechanics of Granular Materials (MGM) experiment are Mark Lankton (Program Manager at University Colorado at Boulder), Susan Batiste (research assistance, UCB), and Stein Sture (principal investigator). 45SHOCK PROPAGATION IN SOFT GRANULAR MATERIALS

By

Shock propagation in particulate materials is governed by the nonlinear interactions between particles. Spherical elastic particles have Hertzian contacts, meaning that they effectively interact via nonlinear springs. Hertzian interactions give rise to nonlinear wave behavior, which has been studied extensively for 1D chains of spheres (e.g., Newton’s cradle), where energy is transmitted perfectly from one particle to the next and the internal sound speed of a particle is assumed to be quasi-infinite. In more realistic situations, forces do not propagate along a single network, but along force chains, which are spatially anistotropic structures that transmit stress. Additionally, shocks can propagate at speeds similar to the internal sound speed. Through shock experiments on 2D assemblies of frictional, photoelastic disks, we show three key results: (1) Two distinct wave speeds emerge after impact, one of which represents the primary force propagation wave; (2) this force propagation speed scales (as a power law) with the intruder velocity can indeed approach the characteristic sound speed inside a grain; and (3) in the shock regime, these propagation speeds are independent of confining pressure and fall along a single branch.

47How Granular Materials Deform In Quasistatic Conditions

By

Based on numerical simulations of quasistatic deformation of model granular materials, two rheological regimes are distinguished, according to whether macroscopic strains merely reflect microscopic material strains within the grains in their contact regions (type I strains), or result from instabilities and contact network rearrangements at the microscopic level (type II strains). We discuss the occurrence of regimes I and II in simulations of model materials made of disks (2D) or spheres (3D). The transition from regime I to regime II in monotonic tests such as triaxial compression is different from both the elastic limit and from the yield threshold. The distinction between both types of response is shown to be crucial for the sensitivity to contact-level mechanics, the relevant variables and scales to be considered in micromechanical approaches, the energy balance and the possible occurrence of macroscopic instabilities

49Why Do Granular Materials Stiffen With Shear Rate? A Test Of Novel Stress-Based Statistics

By

Recent experiments exhibit a rate-dependence for granular shear such that the stress grows linearly in the logarithm of the shear rate, \dot{\gamma}. Assuming a generalized activated process mechanism, we show that these observations are consistent with a recent proposal for a stress-based statistical ensemble. By contrast, predictions for rate-dependence using conventional energy-based statistical mechanics to describe activated processes, predicts a rate dependence that of (\ln (\dot{\gamma}))^{1/2}.
