3Ep. 28 Alex Rivera "Globalization From Below"
By Team Human
Playing for Team Human today is digital media artist, activist, and filmmaker Alex Rivera. Known for his acclaimed 2008 feature film, Sleep Dealer , Rivera's work explores the contradictions of a free-flowing globalized economy and the simultaneous stigmatizing of immigrant laborers and erecting of border walls. Together, Rivera and Douglas Rushkoff interrogate the rhetoric of the digital \"global village.\" We'll learn about what Rivera calls \"Dronification,\" a highly connected, yet ever-more alienated digital subjectivity. Rivera and Rushkoff then discuss how we might restore true human connection and build bottom-up solidarity, or what the Zapatistas call \"globalization from below.\" In today's intro monologue Rushkoff considers the need for both empowering local, grassroots organizing as well as fortifying public structures that bring the benefit of mutual aid and collectivity up to scale. This episode closes with a song from Team Human co-producer/editor Stephen Bartolomei , entitled Kill Floor Rebellion . It's a song \"that celebrates border crossers and migrant workers, inspired by the true story of the Kill Floor Rebellion.\" Inspired by this episode? 4Boaventura-de-sousa-santos-law-and-globalization-from-below-
This book is an unprecedented attempt to analyze the role of the law in the global movement for social justice. Case studies in the book are written by leading scholars from both the global South and the global North, and combine empirical research on the ground with innovative sociolegal theory to shed new light on a wide array of topics. ... ... Among the issues examined are the role of law and politics in the World Social Forum; the struggle of the anti-sweatshop movement for the protection of international labour rights; and the challenge to neoliberal globalization and liberal human rights raised by grassroots movements in India and indigenous peoples around the world. These and other cases, the editors argue, signal the emergence of a subaltern cosmopolitan law and politics that calls for new social and legal theories capable of capturing the potential and tensions of counter-hegemonic globalization. Contents: Contents 1. Law, politics, and the subaltern in counter-hegemonic globalization Boaventura de Sousa Santos and César A. 7Globalization From Below: The Power Of Solidarity
By Jeremy Brecher
"Neophyte or social movement veteran, you need this succinct guide to avoid the pitfalls, ambushes, and ordinary stupidity ready to waylay the well-meaning activist. Thanks to Brecher, Costello, and Smith, we can put winning strategies in their place. We may even get it right this time-and, believe me, this time, it's urgent. Bravo." -Susan George "This lean, thoughtful, and incisive book examines the most important political question raised by the advent of globalization: will a broad grassroots protest movement grow, succeed in entering the political lists and transform the corporate-led global agenda? A must-read for political activists." –Frances Fox Piven "This book shows us the possibilities of launching movements for democratization that actually use and enter the new strategic cross-border geography created by economic globalization. Explodes the notion that you have to be a multinational corporation to act globally.” –Saskia Sassen "Globalization from Below gives us direction for turning the tide of the global economy from one that lifts all yachts to one that truly lifts all boats." – Medea Benjamin When protesters brought the World Trade Organization in Seattle to a halt in November 1999, it marked the "coming out party" for a new global movement. Trade unionists, environmentalists, students, women’s rights groups, and human rights advocates demanded an alternative to “globalization from above.” As Newsweek commented, “There are now two visions of globalization on offer, one led by commerce, one by social activism.” How can this emerging movement realize its vision? Brecher, Costello, and Smith draw on the history of past movements and their own experience as activists to propose strategies for building this powerful coalition into a successful movement for global democratization.
