We tend to seek, use, and remember more information in favor of our perspective, belief, or prediction than those against them. This tendency is taken to reflect a confirmation bias, a positive test strategy, or a myside bias. According to the Argumentative Theory of Reasoning, the primary function of reasoning is argumentative, and we reason to justify ourselves, evaluate others, or convince others (Mercier & Sperber, 2011; Mercier et al., 2017). Thus, we should see myside bias—focusing on positive information about our side and negative information about the other side—when producing arguments (Mercier, 2022). Do we also show this bias before producing arguments: when searching for information after selecting a side (the pre-argumentation stage)? In this study, we aim to investigate biases in information seeking across the lifespan depending on 1) the aim of the information search, e.g., seeking information to learn if one made a correct decision versus seeking information to justify one’s decision to someone else, 2) the presence of a conflicting perspective, e.g., whether we are aware that someone made a different prediction than we did.
