4NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19730019523: ERTS-1 Image Contributes To Understanding Of Geologic Structures Related To Managua Earthquake, 1972

By

ERTS-1 imaged the western portion of Nicaragua on December 24, 1972, one day after the central part of the city of Managua was devastated by a major earthquake which measured 5.6 on the Richter scale. ERTS-1 images reveal sets of lineaments (which may reflect fault systems) along any one of which movement could have taken place. One set includes a line of active volcanoes that parallels the coast and constitutes the southwestern edge of the Nicaraguan Depression, a regional graben which cuts obliquely across the Central American isthmus. This trend is offset approximately 10km in a right lateral geometric sense just west of the city of Managua. A parallel lineament, north of Lake Managua, marks the northeast edge of the graben. A second set, extends northward to northwestward from the mouth of the Rio Grande (Viejo) north of Lake Managua and can be projected southward across the lake to Managua. It is this set along which geometric offset of the volcanic lineament appears to have taken place.

8NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19840024824: Mapping Magnetized Geologic Structures From Space: The Effect Of Orbital And Body Parameters

By

When comparing previous satellite magnetometer missions (such as MAGSAT) with proposed new programs (for example, Geopotential Research Mission, GRM) it is important to quantify the difference in scientific information obtained. The ability to resolve separate magnetic blocks (simulating geological units) is used as a parameter for evaluating the expected geologic information from each mission. The effect of satellite orbital altitude on the ability to resolve two magnetic blocks with varying separations is evaluated and quantified. A systematic, nonlinear, relationship exists between resolution and distance between magnetic blocks as a function of orbital altitude. The proposed GRM would provide an order-of-magnitude greater anomaly resolution than the earlier MAGSAT mission for widely separated bodies. The resolution achieved at any particular altitude varies depending on the location of the bodies and orientation.

9NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20120011564: Geologic Structures In Crater Walls On Vesta

By

The Framing Camera (FC) on the Dawn spacecraft has imaged most of the illuminated surface of Vesta with a resolution of apporpx. 20 m/pixel through different wavelength filters that allow for identification of lithologic units. The Visible and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIR) has imaged the surface at lower spatial resolution but high spectral resolution from 0.25 to 5 micron that allows for detailed mineralogical interpretation. The FC has imaged geologic structures in the walls of fresh craters and on scarps on the margin of the Rheasilvia basin that consist of cliff-forming, competent units, either as blocks or semi-continuous layers, hundreds of m to km below the rims. Different units have different albedos, FC color ratios and VIR spectral characteristics, and different units can be juxtaposed in individual craters. We will describe different examples of these competent units and present preliminary interpretations of the structures. A common occurrence is of blocks several hundred m in size of high albedo (bright) and low albedo (dark) materials protruding from crater walls. In many examples, dark material deposits lie below coherent bright material blocks. In FC Clementine color ratios, bright material is green indicating deeper 1 m pyroxene absorption band. VIR spectra show these to have deeper and wider 1 and 2 micron pyroxene absorption bands than the average vestan surface. The associated dark material has subdued pyroxene absorption features compared to the average vestan surface. Some dark material deposits are consistent with mixtures of HED materials with carbonaceous chondrites. This would indicate that some dark material deposits in crater walls are megabreccia blocks. The same would hold for bright material blocks found above them. Thus, these are not intact crustal units. Marcia crater is atypical in that the dark material forms a semi-continuous, thin layer immediately below bright material. Bright material occurs as one or more layers. In one region, there is an apparent angular unconformity between the bright material and the dark material where bright material layers appear to be truncated against the underlying dark layer. One crater within the Rheasilvia basin contains two distinct types of bright materials outcropping on its walls, one like that found elsewhere on Vesta and the other an anomalous block ~200 m across. This material has the highest albedo; almost twice that of the vestan average. Unlike all other bright materials, this block has a subdued 1 micron pyroxene absorption band in FC color ratios. These data indicate that this block represents a distinct vestan lithology that is rarely exposed.

10NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19740009896: Location Of Geologic Structures From Interpretation Of ERTS-1 Imagery, Carbon County, Wyoming

By

The author has identified the following significant results. Possible geologic structures in the basin sediments of Carbon County and vicinity were located by interpretation of ERTS-1 imagery. These same structures are not evident on existing conventional geologic maps of the area. Subsequent field checks confirmed much of the geologic interpretation, but revealed that two apparent closed structures identified on the ERTS-1 imagery were actually topographic pseudostructures in flat or homoclinal sediments. Stereoscopic coverage (where available) allows the interpreter to avoid such misinterpretations.

13Relationship Between Erosion Intensity And Geologic Units Using Two Models With Different Structures (Case Study: Akhtarabad Watershed)

Erosion is primarily caused by precipitation and runoff, while erodibility results from the type of the formations at the catchment scale, which is subject of this study. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between geologic units and erosion intensity. Initially, two models of MPSIAC and Fargas were used to study erosion intensity. The Fargas model was presented based on the theoretical principles of two erosion and the erodibility factors, while MPSIAC model was based on 9 factors. BLM method was used to separate the intensities of a type of erosion according to the S.S.F table. RUSLE model was used to estimate soil erosion in the studied sub-basins. To determine the risk of erosion using the value coefficient, Fargas model was used. In the MPSIAC model, coefficients were considered for each of the nine factors. Based on the results of MPSIAC model, 79% of the basin surface had high erosion intensity and 21% had very high erosion intensity, while according to Fargas model, 0.3% had moderate erosion intensity, 10% had high erosion intensity, and 4.7% and 85% were characterized with severe erosion and very severe erosion, respectively. Moreover, in both models, 18% corresponded to very high erosion intensity (very severe), while 7.2% had high erosion intensity. In Fargas model, E1t1, E1t2, E2ig3, Q2f, Qt1, and Qt2 had very strong erosion intensity, whereas, in MPSIAC model, E1t1, Qt1, and Qt2 had high erosion intensity on their surfaces. One reason for this phenomenon could be the erodibility of the formations. Most of E1t2 and Q2t are highly eroded, which contributes to a large amount of drainage in addition to the erodibility of the formations.

14NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20080041010: Material Units, Structures/Landforms, And Stratigraphy For The Global Geologic Map Of Ganymede (1:15M)

By

In the coming year a global geological map of Ganymede will be completed that represents the most recent understanding of the satellite on the basis of Galileo mission results. This contribution builds on important previous accomplishments in the study of Ganymede utilizing Voyager data and incorporates the many new discoveries that were brought about by examination of Galileo data. Material units have been defined, structural landforms have been identified, and an approximate stratigraphy has been determined utilizing a global mosaic of the surface with a nominal resolution of 1 km/pixel assembled by the USGS. This mosaic incorporates the best available Voyager and Galileo regional coverage and high resolution imagery (100-200 m/pixel) of characteristic features and terrain types obtained by the Galileo spacecraft. This map has given us a more complete understanding of: 1) the major geological processes operating on Ganymede, 2) the characteristics of the geological units making up its surface, 3) the stratigraphic relationships of geological units and structures, and 4) the geological history inferred from these relationships. A summary of these efforts is provided here.

16NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19740014843: New Uses Of Shadow Enhancement. [interpretation Of Geologic Structures From Photographic Or Scanner Imagery Of Colorado

By

The author has identified the following significant results. Shadow enhancement of topographic linears in photographic or scanner images is a valuable tool for interpretation of geologic structures. Whether linears will be enhanced or subdued depends on sun angle and azimuth. The relationship of the sun's attitude to topographic slopes determines which trends are available for interpretation in existing imagery, and it can be used to select the time of day, surface properties, and film and filter characteristics in planning aircraft flights or satellite orbital passes. The technique of selective shadow enhancement can be applied to all photographic or imaging experiments, but its best for snow-covered scenes, side-looking radar images, and painted relief models.

18NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19760013509: Evaluation Of LANDSAT-2 (ERTS) Images Applied To Geologic Structures And Mineral Resources Of South America

By

The author has identified the following significant results. Work with the Image 100 clearly demonstrates that radiance values of LANDSAT data can be used for correlation of geologic formations across international boundaries. The Totora Formation of the Corocoro Group of Tertiary age was traced from known outcrops near Tiahuanaco, Bolivia, along the south side of Lake Titicaca westward into Peru where the same rocks are considered to be Cretaceous in age. This inconsistency suggests: (1) that a review of this formation is needed by joint geological surveys of both countries to determine similarities, differences, and the true age; (2) that recognition of the extension of the copper-bearing Totora Formation of Bolivia into Peru may provide Peru with a new target for exploration. Equal radiance maps made by use of the Image 100 system show as many as eight different units within salar deposits (salt flats) of the Bolivian Altiplano. Standard film processed images show them as nearly uniform areas of white because of lack of dynamic range in film products. The Image 100 system, therefore, appears to be of great assistance in subdividing the salt flats on the basis of moisture distribution, surface roughness, and distribution of windblown materials. Field work is needed to determine these relationships to mineral composition and distribution. Images representing seasonal changes should also improve the accuracy of such maps. Radiance values of alteration zones related to the occurrence of porphyry copper ores were measured at the San Juan del Abra deposit of northern Chile using the Image 100 system. The extent to which these same values may be used to detect similar alteration zones in other areas has not yet been tested.

Zoomable full resolution image available at davidrumsey.com . This image 10200.022 is a part of image group 10200.000 . Yaggy's large geographical charts are among the most beautiful and impressive educational charts published in the 19th century. Using chromolithography, Yaggy created stunning colors and contrasts in his images of the world, its regions, and peoples. Yaggy intended his charts to be used in classrooms by students, and issued a teacher’s handbook to assist with instruction. This set of 4 charts includes 2 charts with multiple states of viewing with flaps and rear illumination, 1 fixed chart of the climate zones, and 1 three dimensional topographic map of the United States. Yaggy published other educational works: Yaggy's 1893 Geographical Portfolio consisting of ten charts (see our 10096.000); Museum of Antiquity; A Description of Ancient Life… (1880); The Royal Path of Life; Or, Aims and Aids to Success and Happiness (1881); The Standard History of All Nations and Races… (1899); and How to Do a Consulting Library for Every Want (1902); Yaggy’s Anatomical Study; Presenting the Skeleton, Muscles, Arteries, Veins and Nerves, also Four Life-Size Manikins of the Body, the Head, the Eye and the Ear (Chicago, ca. 1884-1885), which featured life-size illustrations and cutaways of the human body.

22NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19760023540: Evaluation Of LANDSAT-2 (ERTS) Images Applied To Geologic Structures And Mineral Resources Of South America. [Salar De Coposa, Chile And Salar Of Uyuni, Bolivia

By

The author has identified the following significant results. The Salar of Coposa is located in northern Chile along the frontier with Bolivia. The surface was divided into six general classes of materials. Analysis of LANDSAT image 1243-14001 by use of interactive multispectral computer (Image 100) enabled accurate repetition of these general classes based on reflectance. The Salar of Uyuni is the largest of the South American evaporite deposits. Using image 1243-13595, and parallel piped computer classification of reflectance units, the Salar was divided into nine classes ranging from deep to shallow water, water over salt, salt saturated with water, and several classes of dry salt.
