Public and private cost savings are documented in geologic mapping activities. Benefits and capabilities accruing to the ERS system are assessed. It is shown that remote sensing aids in resource extraction, as well as the monitoring of several dynamic phenomena, including disturbed lands, reclamation, erosion, glaciation, and volcanic and seismic activity.

More than 60 local residents protested outside of Assemblymember Didi Barrett's office in Hudson on Saturday, April 8 over her sponsorship of legislation that would undercut the state's effort to undercut greenhouse gas emissions. Michael Richardson of River and Mountains GreenFaith, one of the organizers, discussed the protest with Mark Dunlea of Hudson Mohawk Magazine.

Based on Kennedy Space Center siting and logistics requirements and the nonfossil energy resources at the Center, a number of applicable technologies and system candidates for hydrogen production were identified and characterized. A two stage screening of these technologies in the light of specific criteria identified two leading candidates as nonfossil system approaches. Conceptual design and costing of two solar-operated, stand alone systems, one photovoltaic based on and the other involving the power tower approach reveals their technical feasibility as sited as KSC, and the potential for product cost competitiveness with conventional supply approaches in the 1990 to 1210 time period. Conventional water hydrolysis and hydrogen liquefaction subsystems are integrated with the solar subsystems.

Two years ago, Environment and Climate Change Canada came out with a report saying that Canada is warming at more than double the global rate. Despite this, Canada increased its emissions more than any other G7 country since it signed the Paris Agreement.  At the same time, Canada’s largest public pension plan has increased its shares in fossil fuel companies. A recent report by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives looks at the fossil fuel portion of the investment portfolios of Canada’s two biggest pension funds. We speak with co-authors Jessica Dempsey and James Rowe.

Abstract : In his 1973 essay entitled, Energy and Equity, medieval historian and social critic Ivan Illich observed that the first step toward addressing the energy crisis is to recognize that there are thresholds "beyond which technical processes begin to dictate social relations. Calories are both biologically and socially healthy only as long as they stay within the narrow range that separates enough from too much." In order to uncover what "enough" might mean in the post-collapse cod fisheries of Newfoundland and Labrador, I focus on debates that emerged during the 1850s surrounding the appropriateness of various fishing methods. I interpret the introduction of the cod jigger in the 19th century as marking the transgression of a cultural threshold that allowed the determination of appropriate relationships between codfish and people.
