A fairly complete list is reported of programming techniques which are available to the programmer for optimizing the execution time of production programs written in FORTRAN IV (G and H) for the IBM 360 under OS. After the program has been complied under FORTRAN H, OPT=2, then the process of actually changing code begins. The bulk of execution time of FORTRAN programs can almost always be attributed to a few loops, and primary consideration is given to these.

This report describes the use of computer program 'SEEK' which works in conjunction with two user-written subroutines and an input data file to perform an optimization procedure on a user's problem. The optimization method uses a modified feasible directions gradient technique. SEEK is written in ANSI standard Fortran 77, has an object size of about 46K bytes, and can be used on a personal computer running DOS. This report describes the use of the program and discusses the optimizing method. The program use is illustrated with four example problems: a bushing design, a helical coil spring design, a gear mesh design, and a two-parameter Weibull life-reliability curve fit.

In this paper, applications of the modern Fortran programming language to the field of spacecraft trajectory optimization and design are examined. Modern object-oriented Fortran has many advantages for scientific programming, although many legacy Fortran aerospace codes have not been upgraded to use the newer standards (or have been rewritten in other languages perceived to be more modern). NASA's Copernicus spacecraft trajectory optimization program, originally a combination of Fortran 77 and Fortran 95, has attempted to keep up with modern standards and makes significant use of the new language features. Various algorithms and methods are presented from trajectory tools such as Copernicus, as well as modern Fortran open source libraries and other projects.

A truss is a collection of axially loaded structural elements connected through pin joints. Optimization of truss structures indicates the determination of best possible conditions that are necessary for achieving the most economical design in terms of lowest possible weights of the truss elements. According to recent studies, Size, Topology and Shape based optimizations are the three possible independent optimization scopes for finding the optimum weight of a truss. The current study focuses on the size optimization of truss structure and aims to identify the most cost-effective sections of the truss using a powerful evolutionary optimization technique named as Genetic Algorithm (GA). Here single point cross over method and bit wise mutation operator are adopted for expanding the search space with the assigned displacement and stress constraints. Fortran based sub routines are developed for each individual steps of GA such as fitness evaluation, selection, cross-over and mutation. Finaly the complete programis run for validation of its outcome. While comparing with the solution of an existing literature regarding a minimization of objective function having two design variables the outcomes tendto show a good correlation. Further, the study is extended for the weight minimization of two widely used truss having 10 members and 17 members respectively with standard Finite Element Method of analysis. Minimum weight of each truss is obtained via convergence plot and compared with the existing literatures. With this simple but efficient global optimization technique optimum weight of truss structure can easily be achieved

This paper discusses in substantial detail the design principles and structure of an existing Fortran program library whose primary application is to solve optimization problems. Such a discussion not only helps to clarify the scope of application for potential users of the library, but also is useful for workers on other software projects. The fundamental objectives of the present library have been to produce sound, careful implementations of reliable methods that represent the state of the art in numerical optimization. A high-level language permits a programmer to communicate easily with a computer. The machine program that results from the use of a high-level language generally executes slower and requires more of the computer resources than the same program written efficiently in machine language. An optimization pass for the language processor can reduce the execution time and the resource requirements of the resulting program. A machine independent optimization pass that accomplishes such improvements is described in this report. The algorithms that make up the optimization pass include both machine independent general algorithms and a generalization of some machine specific features. The language processor for which optimization is performed is a cross-compiler. Examples are given illustrating the results of the optimization algorithms. (Author)

Guidelines are given to provide the programmer with various techniques for optimizing programs when the FORTRAN IV H compiler is used with OPT=2. Subroutines and programs are described in the appendices along with a timing summary of all the examples given in the manual.
