Memory is funny thing. Why do you remember some things, but not everything? Alot've people imagine their brain like a memory stick that's only able to hold so much. And that metaphor might be spot on. A new study published in Nature Neuroscience finds that the very act of remembering may be one of the major reasons why we forget. The study involved giving people an MRI while showing them famous pictures matched up with unrelated words. The research would then try to re-train the brain to associate the famous photo with a new, different word. The newer memory association nearly always won. The researchers say forgetting isn't always a negative thing. It can be incredibly useful when trying to get rid of a negative memory from our past. The study could mean a different approach for people dealing with a traumatic experiences. It could also help psychologists dealing with people who have irrational fears.
