Memory is funny thing. Why do you remember some things, but not everything? Alot've people imagine their brain like a memory stick that's only able to hold so much. And that metaphor might be spot on. A new study published in Nature Neuroscience finds that the very act of remembering may be one of the major reasons why we forget. The study involved giving people an MRI while showing them famous pictures matched up with unrelated words. The research would then try to re-train the brain to associate the famous photo with a new, different word. The newer memory association nearly always won. The researchers say forgetting isn't always a negative thing. It can be incredibly useful when trying to get rid of a negative memory from our past. The study could mean a different approach for people dealing with a traumatic experiences. It could also help psychologists dealing with people who have irrational fears.

In this paper we investigate forgetting in disjunctive logic programs, where forgetting an atom from a program amounts to a reduction in the signature of that program. The goal is to provide an approach that is syntax-independent, in that if two programs are strongly equivalent, then the results of forgetting an atom in each program should also be strongly equivalent. Our central definition of forgetting is impractical but satisfies this goal: Forgetting an atom is characterised by the set of SE consequences of the program that do not mention the atom to be forgotten. We then provide an equivalent, practical definition, wherein forgetting an atom $p$ is given by those rules in the program that don't mention $p$, together with rules obtained by a single inference step from rules that do mention $p$. Forgetting is shown to have appropriate properties; as well, the finite characterisation results in a modest (at worst quadratic) blowup. Finally we have also obtained a prototype implementation of this approach to forgetting.

A small number of studies have examined changes in recall of remember- and forget-cued items across multiple tests (e.g., Goernert, Widner, & Otani, 2007). Changes in recall across multiple tests is typically studied within the context of the hypermnesia paradigm. Hypermnesia is defined as the increase in item recall across repeated testing without relearning or re-exposure to the items (e.g., Roediger & Payne, 1982). In the typical hypermnesia study, lists of items are presented at study and later recalled across 2 or 3 consecutive tests. Hypermnesia has since been demonstrated with words (Payne, Hembrooke & Anastasi, 1993), poetry (Ballard, 1913), pictures (e.g., Goernert, Corenblum & Corenblum, 2024; Experiment 1; Erdelyi & Becker, 1974; Dragone et al., 1980), Socratic stimuli (Erdelyi, Buschke, & Finkelstein, 1977; Kazén & Solís-Macías, 2016), and has been examined by varying (for example) the influence of retrieval interval lengths (Wallner & Bäuml, 2018) or the nature of the recall task (free, forced or cued recall, Payne, Hembrooke & Anastasi, 1993; Wallner & Bäuml, 2018).

That means traces of earlier events can be found in the reservoir for very long time spans. Such a setting requires critical connectivity exactly at the limit of what is permissible according the echo state condition. However, for general matrices the limit cannot be determined exactly from theory. In addition, the behavior of the network is strongly influenced by the input flow. Results are presented that use certain types of restricted recurrent connectivity and anticipation learning with regard to the input, where indeed power law forgetting can be achieved.

In this interview, within the context of the Budapest memorial site project in memory of women who were raped in times of war, we touch on the specifics of the call for applications, the importance of selecting the right site for the memorial, the role of the jury, and the ways in which the commemoration process can continue. Drawing on his experiences as a member of various juries, Young views the memorial as an extended process, stressing that preparation and afterlife are as important, as elements of the meanings of a memorial, as the physical object or site themselves.
