2Psychological Network Of Psychological Flexibility And Self-compassion

By

3The Impact Of Ambiguous Sentence Judgement Training On Creativity: The Moderating Role Of Cognitive Flexibility

By

The processing of ambiguous sentence and creativity has traditionally been studied as two separate cognitive domains. Recent empirical research on creativity has demonstrated the significance of ambiguity in fostering creative problem-solving. This study aims to investigate, through an empirical study, whether ambiguity sentence judgement training can enhance individuals' creativity and the moderating role of cognitive flexibility in this process.

5Are Autistic Adults Impaired On A Cognitive Flexibility Task With Varying Level Of Predictability?

By

Autistic individuals have flexibility difficulties in daily life but results are mixed in the literature regarding laboratory experiments. In order to investigate if unpredictability could play a critical role in flexibility difficulties in autism, we created a revised version of the task switching task (Rogers and Monsell, 1995) including three levels of predictability.

11ERIC EJ1033089: Exploring The Moderating Role Of Perceived Flexibility Advantages In Mobile Learning Continuance Intention (MLCI)

By

The primary purpose of this study was to explore the key factors that could affect mobile learning continuance intention (MLCI), and examine the moderating effect of perceived flexibility advantages (PFA) on the relationship between key mobile learning elements and continuance intention. Five hundred undergraduate students who had previously adopted mobile devices to learn English took part in this study. Partial least squares (PLS) analysis was utilized to test the hypotheses in this study. It has been found that the perceived usefulness of mobile technology, subjective norm, and self-management of learning could be closely linked to mobile learning continuance intention. With particular respect to the moderating role of perceived flexibility advantages, it has been demonstrated that PFA could moderate the relationship between perceived usefulness of mobile technology and mobile learning continuance intention, as well as the association between subjective norm and mobile learning continuance intention, whereas PFA did not moderate the link between self-management of learning and mobile learning continuance intention. This report has further added to the body of knowledge in the field of mobile learning through empirical examination.

12Coping Flexibility And Media Use

By

Media has become a primary tool to cope with stress, allowing the pursuit of different coping strategies. University life is often considered a time that involves high levels of academic stress, and young adults are known to primarily use online in comparison to offline media. While in research on problematic internet use, using online media for coping is often considered maladaptive behaviour, other findings indicate that online media is a central and effective way of coping. The personality trait coping flexibility has emerged as one important factor for adaptive coping that is associated with outcomes such as psychological well-being and may predict whether coping using online media is adaptive, as indicated by elevated well-being, or maladaptive, as indicated by increased perceived stress. Moreover, a better understanding of personality factors that may influence the selection of media as coping tools is required. Thus, this study examines how coping flexibility relates to the use of different internet-based coping tools for stress regulation, and whether coping flexibility plays a moderating role for the relationship between the use of online coping tools and academic stress and well-being. Additionally, the prevalence of media use for coping is examined. Surveys will be administered at two times during the semester to students in a longitudinal design.

13DTIC ADA195923: Modeling Robot Flexibility For Endpoint Force Control.

By

Dynamic models have been developed in an attempt to match the response of a robot arm. The experimental data show rigid-body and five resonant modes. The frequency response and pole-zero arrays for various models of structural flexibility are compared with the data to evaluate the characteristics of the models, and to provide insight into the nature of the flexibility in the robot. Certain models are better able to depict transmission flexibility while others describe types of structural flexibility. (kr)

15Predicting Individual Differences In Resilience By Cognitive And Affective Flexibility

By

Resilience research aims at finding traits or predispositions that protect from developing mental disorders despite exposure to stress or adversity. One psychosocial factor that is frequently linked to resilience is psychological flexibility. So far, only one study has focused on the association of cognitive and affective flexibility and resilience. The current study aims at replicating and extending these findings. For this purpose, resilience and flexibility will be examined in a sample of 100 healthy subjects. To measure resilience, three self-report questionnaires will be applied: two that define resilience as a personality trait and one that focuses on resilience as an outcome in the sense of stress coping abilities. Cognitive and affective flexibility will be assessed as switch costs (increases in response times and error rates when switching between two tasks) in two experimental paradigms.

19Flexibility Of Trait Judgments From Naturalistic Videos

By

People spontaneously form impressions of other individuals’ dispositions based on thin slices of observations. For instance, in a split second upon seeing a face, people form an impression of whether the individual is warm, competent, or feminine. In fact, people have hundreds of different trait words to describe these impressions. Are some trait impressions more changeable than others? To understand this question, the present study compares people’s impressions of unfamiliar targets based on still images of the targets’ faces and based on naturalistic videos of the targets talking about an important event in their life. To maximize generalizability, we study a representatively sampled set of 38 different trait impressions (e.g., easygoing, mature, courageous, conservative, religious). Each participant evaluates one target person on these 38 traits once based on a still frame from the video and again after watching the entire video.

20NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19930092068: Effects Of Wing Flexibility And Variable Air Lift Upon Wing Bending Moment During Landing Impacts Of A Small Seaplane

By

A smooth-water-landing investigation was conducted with a small seaplane to obtain experimental wing-bending-moment time histories together with time histories of the various parameters necessary for the prediction of wing bending moments during hydrodynamic forcing functions. The experimental results were compared with calculated results which include inertia-load effects and the effects of air-load variation during impact. The responses of the fundamental mode were calculated with the use of the measured hydrodynamic forcing functions. From these responses, the wing bending moments due to the hydrodynamic load were calculated according to the procedure given in R.M. No. 2221. The comparison of the time histories of the experimental and calculated wing bending moments showed good agreement both in phase relationship of the oscillations and in numerical values.

22ERIC ED039201: The Effect Of Instructional Flexibility Training On The Flexibility Of Student Teachers' Teaching Styles.

By

This research study is a continuation of the work on Instructional Flexibility Training (IFT) developed by Joyce and Hodges. It attempts to discover if the use of IFT helped student teachers control the flexibility of their teaching styles, whether they could employ a variety of teaching models, and whether the conceptual ability of the teacher affected his flexibility. Two hypotheses were formulated: (1) that IFT will give teachers greater controlled flexibility and (2) that student teachers with a high conceptual level will have greater controlled flexibility than those with a lower conceptual level. The study used 54 teachers in experimental and control groups, with conceptual levels determined by a Sentence Completion Test. Both groups taught a Controlled Flexibility Lesson near the beginning and end of their assignments, with the experimental group receiving IFT in the interval. Measurement of the initial styles showed no significant differences, and the final analysis showed that the experimental group did not differ significantly from the control group in controlled flexibility. All subjects in both groups were at the lower end of the concreteness-abstractedness spectrum, preventing a true test of the second hypothesis. The implication of the study is that IFT may be useful in helping prospective teachers learn more abstract teaching strategies, but further research is needed. (MBM)

23Xbox 360 Fancast 132 -- Flexibility

By

We've got an interesting show this week. We spend quite a bit of time talking about the Elite price cut as well as the "flexibility" offered by not including HDMI or component cables in the new bundle. We also grill Alexander about GamesCom and his recent trip to Germany. Of course, there's all the other usual malarkey and hullabaloo as well. Enjoy.

24“Ready For A Career Change? “: The Role Of Cognitive Flexibility In Career Transition And Adaptation

By

The present project is part of a larger project aimed at examining cognitive flexibility, other executive functions, and learning in healthy adults (Melani et al., 2022; Sam et al., 2022; Tong et al., 2021) in Singapore. The current pre-registration form primarily aims to examining specific hypotheses related to the association between socio-cognitive variables and career development/transitional behaviours and outcomes, which might not be described in the main studies (https://osf.io/ay9gr; https://osf.io/n352u; https://osf.io/6rc9h) in detail. Changes in the workplace over the past decades have spawned an increase in research investigating contemporary career types, which are characterized by increased self-directedness, flexibility, and the aim of subjective career success. Living in a dynamic and complex environment necessitates that all living organisms be flexible and adaptive to survive (Powell & Ragozzino, 2017). Humans are required to proactively equip themselves with the ability to shift their strategies and update their beliefs and actions in response to changing environmental demands (Diamond, 2006; Garcia-Garcia et al., 2010; Geurts et al., 2009; Herrmann et al., 2015). For instance, the increasing volatility in the 21st-century workforce, particularly during the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, has served as a timely reminder of the urgency of cultivating the flexibility to respond to unforeseen changes and uncertainties more adaptively in order to stay competitive in turbulent job markets. The view of a linear career path (whereby workers are only trained to perform and master one job) that dominated the mainstream workplace system since the second industrial revolution happened in the 19th century is becoming more irrelevant in the modern-day labour market; it is almost impossible for one to anticipate having the same career path for their entire life (Baruch, 2004). The Career Construction Model of Adaptation (CCMA; Savickas & Porfeli, 2012) posits that individuals' vocational outcomes hinge on their ability to navigate “a lifetime of job changes without losing their sense of self and social identity” (Guichard, 2005; Savickas, 2012). The model is designed to demonstrate the interplay of the “4As”, specifically how Adaptivity (characterized by flexibility and a willingness to adapt to a constantly changing work environment, e.g., cognitive flexibility, proactivity, openness) positively influences career Adaptability (self-regulatory resources managing both predictable work roles and unpredictable changes stemming from career growth and transitions). This, in turn, positively impacts Adapting responses (behaviours and beliefs individuals employ to manage career development tasks and challenges, e.g., career planning, exploration), culminating in Adaptation outcomes (e.g., income, job satisfaction, employability). Many past studies (e.g., Chong & Leong, 2017; Gelatt & Gelatt, 2003; Griffin & Hesketh, 2003; Hamtiaux & Houssemand, 2012) suggested a positive association between cognitive flexibility, career adaptability, and related career behaviours/outcomes. Cognitive flexibility is one of the core executive functions – alongside working memory (which relates to one’s limited mental capacity to retain and process information in our brain), and inhibitory control (which relates to one’s self-and inference control, such as selective attention) – that take charges of attention switching, perspective-changing, and selecting and transferring amongst numerous acquired mental representations to new demands/tasks (Diamond 2013; Miyake et al., 2000). Cognitive flexibility is described as a crucial driver that enables humans to adjust their courses of action through time, and as a result, to respond to challenges and uncertainties arising from the ever-changing environments appropriately and efficiently (Dajani & Uddin, 2015; Powell & Ragozzino, 2017). Most existing career studies used self-reported questionnaires that measure the extent to which people believe that they are flexible while examining the relationship between cognitive flexibility and career adaptability. Nonetheless, these measurements do not necessarily correspond to the actual capacity of cognitive flexibility, i.e., the ability to switch attention from one task to another, which is typically assessed by participants’ task performance as opposed to the self-assessments. Without comprehensive empirical evidence, the assertion that humans’ cognitive ability influences their readiness to be flexible to adapt at work – and ultimately, the actions one takes to achieve their career goals – remains questionable. This project aims to utilize both psychometric and experimental approaches to comprehensively investigate the interrelationship between executive functions, particularly cognitive flexibility, career adaptability, and various associated career beliefs, behaviours, and outcomes amongst Singaporean adults aged between 25 and 40.

25Impact Of Domain-general And Domain-specific Factors On Strategy Flexibility

By

The current study will investigate how conceptual knowledge, procedural fluency, and executive function (i.e., working memory, inhibition, and shifting) relate to strategy flexibility. We define strategy flexibility as the ability, when possible, to select and correctly execute innovative strategies, which we define as non-standard strategies that are more efficient than standard ones. In the algebra equation solving task, participants will solve algebraic equations. The equations will be designed so that they can be solved using innovative strategies, but participants will be free to use whatever strategy they prefer. In the strategy execution task, participants will solve similar equations but this time they will be instructed to use the innovative strategy for each equation. Conceptual knowledge, procedural fluency, and executive function will also be measured. The main research questions are (1) how conceptual knowledge, procedural fluency, and executive function relate to the use of innovative strategies in the algebra equation solving task, and (2) how these same predictors relate to the correct execution of innovative strategies in the strategy execution task.

26Pathways Linking The Conscientiousness Facets To Subjective Well-being: Exploring The Roles Of Cognitive Flexibility And Emotional Intelligence

By

Conscientiousness represents a relatively stable pattern of individual differences in adhering to socially prescribed impulse control, pursuing goal-directed behavior, exhibiting delayed gratification, and conforming to norms and rules (Roberts et al., 2009). It is widely recognized that conscientious individuals often excel in both work and academic settings (MacCann et al., 2020; Wilmot & Ones, 2019). However, several studies have indicated that excessive conscientiousness correlates with less favorable consequences, such as inflexibility, rigid self-discipline, excessive demands, and compulsive behaviors such as excessive cleanliness and tidiness (Dunkley et al., 2006; Le et al.,2011; McCord et al., 2014; Widiger et al., 2002). Hence, evidence suggests both the upside and downside aspects of conscientiousness. However, less is known about which aspect represents the upside, and which represents the downside. To address this gap, we conducted research linking conscientiousness to obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms. Detailed information can be found at https://osf.io/gjh6b. The findings revealed that in both sample groups, competence and dutifulness facets showed negative associations with OC symptoms, suggesting the upsides of conscientiousness. On the other hand, the orderliness and achievement-striving facets exhibited positive correlations with OC symptoms, suggesting the downsides of Conscientiousness. Although the last study aimed to explore potential measurement-specific effects by employing various scales, the reliability of the Chernyshenko Conscientiousness Scale (CCS, Chernyshenko, 2003; Hill & Roberts, 2011) was unsatisfactory in both participant groups, hindering the detection of such effects. Therefore, this study will examine the effects of different conscientiousness measurement instruments on association with conscientiousness-related outcomes. Importantly, the last research highlighted the significance of considering specific facets of conscientiousness to understand its dual nature, and we will continue to apply this insight in this research. The overarching theme of our research focuses on a comprehensive examination of both the downsides and upsides of conscientiousness. To obtain more robust findings regarding the duality of conscientiousness, we aim to expand the scope to include positive outcomes, such as subjective well-being (SWB). SWB is often defined as individuals’ overall evaluations of their lives and emotional experiences (Diener et al., 2017). Generally, conscientiousness is positively associated with life satisfaction and job satisfaction, as well as positive affect, but negatively related to negative affect (Anglim et al., 2020). However, conflicting findings suggest that conscientiousness may also be associated with greater negative affect (Fayard et al., 2012), greater decreases in life satisfaction (Boyce et al., 2010), and lower psychological well-being (Carter et al., 2016). These findings imply the potential downsides of certain conscientiousness facets that are not conducive to individuals’ well-being. Moreover, conscientiousness may not directly influence life satisfaction (Blatny et al. 2018), suggesting potential mediation may exist in its relationship with SWB, as indicated by previous studies (Douglas et al., 2004; Odaci & Cikrikci, 2019). Cognitive flexibility (CF) refers to the ability to perceive difficult situations as controllable and to consider multiple alternative explanations or solutions for life occurrences or difficult situations (Dennis & Vander Wal, 2010). Several studies have indicated that conscientiousness positively predicts CF (Odaci & Cikrikci, 2019; Jensen-Campbell et al., 2002; Johann & Karbach, 2022). However, conscientious individuals may also be inflexible and rigid in self-discipline (Ferguson et al., 2014; McCord et al., 2014; Woods & Hampson, 2005), and research has indicated that conscientiousness is associated with less CF (Maclean & Arnell, 2010). These references suggest that there may be distinct relationships between conscientiousness facets and CF. Since life satisfaction encompasses cognitive components (Diener, 2000), CF may impact one’s level of life satisfaction. Previous studies have indicated that CF positively predicts life satisfaction and serves as a mediator between Big Five personality traits and life satisfaction (Odaci & Cikrikci, 2019; Smith & Konik, 2022). Therefore, CF may mediate the conscientiousness-SWB association, with the mediation effect varying across different facets. Emotional Intelligence (EQ), considered a subset of social intelligence, refers to the ability to monitor one’s own and other’s feelings and emotions and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and actions (Salovey & Mayer, 1990). Similar to conscientiousness, EQ is crucial for individuals and it is positively associated with job performance, academic performance, and job satisfaction (MacCann et al., 2020; Miao et al., 2017; Miao et al., 2021), as well as SWB (Sánchez-Álvarez et al., 2016). However, research has indicated that the relationship between EQ and SWB was not independent of personality (Thingujam, 2011), and EQ also influenced the conscientiousness-performance association (Douglas et al., 2004). Additionally, individuals high in conscientiousness but lacking interpersonal skills (such as EQ) may appear inflexible and challenging to work with (Witt et al., 2002). Moreover, EQ often acts as a mediating variable in studies related to conscientiousness and life satisfaction (Pradhan & Jandu, 2023; Wu, 2021). Therefore, EQ may mediate the conscientiousness-SWB association, with the mediation effect varying across different facets. Furthermore, Gurtman (1997) proposed that comprehensive models of personality traits, such as the Big Five and circumplex models, may serve as a foundation for better understanding the nomological network of observable characteristics. Thus, this study plans to apply the Big Five personality model, measured by the International Personality Item Pool (IPIP)-300, and the circumplex model, measured by the (IPIP)-AB5C. The AB5C allows for the consideration of traits that represent combinations of two of the original Big Five personality traits. For example, high levels of conscientiousness and low levels of openness form the trait of orderliness (Hofstee et al., 1992), avoiding potential instrument-specific findings. Therefore, this research aims to address the controversial relationship between conscientiousness facets and SWB and detect the potential mediating effects of CF and EQ on their relationship.

30Flexibility Of Bricards Planar Linkages And Other Structures Via Resultants And Computer Algebra

By

Flexibility of structures is extremely important for chemistry and robotics. Following our earlier work, we study flexibility using polynomial equations, resultants, and a symbolic algorithm of our creation that analyzes the resultant. We show that the software solves a classic arrangement of quadrilaterals in the plane due to Bricard. We fill in several gaps in Bricard's work and discover new flexible arrangements that he was apparently unaware of. This provides strong evidence for the maturity of the software, and is a wonderful example of mathematical discovery via computer assisted experiment.

31Quantitative Prediction Of 3D Solution Shape And Flexibility Of Nucleic Acid Nanostructures.

By

This article is from Nucleic Acids Research , volume 40 . Abstract DNA nanotechnology enables the programmed synthesis of intricate nanometer-scale structures for diverse applications in materials and biological science. Precise control over the 3D solution shape and mechanical flexibility of target designs is important to achieve desired functionality. Because experimental validation of designed nanostructures is time-consuming and cost-intensive, predictive physical models of nanostructure shape and flexibility have the capacity to enhance dramatically the design process. Here, we significantly extend and experimentally validate a computational modeling framework for DNA origami previously presented as CanDo [Castro,C.E., Kilchherr,F., Kim,D.-N., Shiao,E.L., Wauer,T., Wortmann,P., Bathe,M., Dietz,H. (2011) A primer to scaffolded DNA origami. Nat. Meth., 8, 221–229.]. 3D solution shape and flexibility are predicted from basepair connectivity maps now accounting for nicks in the DNA double helix, entropic elasticity of single-stranded DNA, and distant crossovers required to model wireframe structures, in addition to previous modeling (Castro,C.E., et al.) that accounted only for the canonical twist, bend and stretch stiffness of double-helical DNA domains. Systematic experimental validation of nanostructure flexibility mediated by internal crossover density probed using a 32-helix DNA bundle demonstrates for the first time that our model not only predicts the 3D solution shape of complex DNA nanostructures but also their mechanical flexibility. Thus, our model represents an important advance in the quantitative understanding of DNA-based nanostructure shape and flexibility, and we anticipate that this model will increase significantly the number and variety of synthetic nanostructures designed using nucleic acids.

32Does The Emphasis On Conjunctive Vs Lower-level Representations Drive The Efficiency-flexibility Tradeoff?

By

This is a behavioral study that aims to look at the difference between developing conjunctive and lower-level representations during different task demands. Conjunctive representations are considered to help with performing tasks very efficiently whilst at a cost of flexibility. This means that forming conjunctive representations will aid in performing tasks quickly but restricts the ability to adaptively respond to changing task demands. On the other hand, lower-level representations (i.e., the constituent dimensions of conjunctive representations) are considered to help with performing tasks more flexibly but at a cost to efficiency. In this study, we want to try to use different incentive conditions to place either an emphasis on conjunctive or lower-level representations. As behavioral indicator of conjunctive representations we rely on the so-called partial-overlap costs, assessed in either RTs, error rates, or drift rates.

34ERIC ED374750: State University Of New York Personnel Practices Under Flexibility. Report-94-S-29.

By

This audit evaluated State University of New York (SUNY) personnel practices under 1985 and 1987 state legislation which granted SUNY greater flexibility to set salaries in order to recruit and retain top faculty and administrative talent. The study concluded that SUNY has used flexibility prudently and that flexibility has not had a significant impact on overall salaries. In addition, comparisons with peer university systems nationwide found that SUNY's faculty and administrator salaries are in line with other states. However, the audit found that SUNY has not developed any formal criteria or gathered evidence to assess the impact of flexibility on personnel practices. A review of a sample of SUNY staff paid more than institutional maximums found these were adequately documented and properly authorized and were generally used to attract or retain top faculty or administrators. Salary ranges for employees were established based on existing SUNY salary structure at the time flexibility legislation was enacted and on the salaries paid by SUNY's peer institutions. Findings indicated that SUNY officials should establish specific criteria and obtain data to measure the benefits and costs of flexibility. Appendixes contain faculty and administrator salary comparison charts and comments of SUNY officials. (JB)

38Development Of The Japanese Version Of Personalized Psychological Flexibility Index

By

44ERIC ED024237: Planning Model For School Facilities. A Planning Model For A Secondary School Utilizing A Multi-dimensional Approach For Optimum Flexibility.

By

That the construction of a multi-million dollar school plant should be the result of the community's best possible thought, since concrete and steel are not suitable media for necessary future changes in the educational environment, is the basic philosophy of this report. Architects, administrators, teachers, school committeemen, and consultants all participated in designing both a new physical plan and a compatible curriculum. This was accomplished without a communications gap among the participants by the employment of a physical model of a proposed school plan. By observing the physical model with movable elements and simulation techniques, planners were able to comprehend more quickly and relate the number of variables present in curriculum change, new course structure, or the design of the building to house instructional programs. The educational specifications for the Chelmsford Park High School are included as are recommendations for simulation as an instructional tool. The appendices include a section on teacher training (a system concept for developing teacher empathy), a sample community questionnaire, and the planning schedule for the proposed high school. A bibliography of sources on school planning is also included. (NI)

45Chapter 11 Complementarity And Flexibility Indexes Of An Interoperable VPP

This book provides a general overview of virtual power plants (VPP) as a key technology in future energy communities and active distribution and transmission networks for managing distributed energy resources, providing local and global services, and facilitating market participation of small-scale managing distributed energy resources and prosumers. The book also aims at describing some practical solutions, business models, and novel architectures for the implementation of VPPs in the real world. Each chapter of the book begins with the fundamental structure of the problem required for a rudimentary understanding of the methods described. It provides a clear picture for practical implementation of VPP through novel technologies such as blockchain, digital twin, and distributed ledger technology. The book will help the electrical and power engineers, undergraduate, graduate students, research scholars, and utility engineers to understand the emerging solutions regarding the VPP concept lucidly.

46‘Emerging Selves’: Dynamics Of Identity Formation, Emotional Flexibility, And Resilience To Mental Distress In The Transition To Adulthood

By

Emerging adulthood is a key developmental stage characterized by unique psychological and emotional challenges, often outlined by five core dimensions: exploring identity, navigating instability, increasing self-focus, facing expansive life choices, and experiencing a unique sense of being "in-between" adolescence and adulthood (Arnett, 2000; Escher & Seiffge-Krenke, 2017; Seiffge-Krenke, 2019). These challenges add to developmental strain, especially as young adults face major life decisions that can amplify psychological distress, often leading to symptoms of anxiety or depression (Seiffge-Krenke, 2017). The need to balance many new opportunities with limited guidance - further complicated by social expectations - intensifies distress as young adults juggle the competing demands of societal norms and personal autonomy. Central to managing these pressures is emotional flexibility, the ability to adaptively adjust one’s emotional reactions based on different situations (e.g., Sheppes et al., 2011, 2014; Specker et al., 2015). Emotional flexibility involves the capacity to choose suitable emotion regulation strategies based on situational demands, such as engaging in reappraisal in low-intensity situations while opting for distraction in high-intensity scenarios (see Levy-Gigi et al., 2016). This dynamic skill is linked to various protective mechanisms that may bolster resilience (i.e., the capacity to recover from adversity), thereby supporting mental health and aiding psychological adaptation (Bonanno, 2004). The present study examines how the unique developmental features of emerging adulthood - such as identity exploration, the need to grow into adult roles, and related psychological stress - interact with emotional flexibility as a potential coping strategy. We assess how emotional flexibility influences psychological stress, resilience, psychological well-being, and life satisfaction during this transitional period. Emerging adulthood is conceptualized through the abovementioned five core developmental dimensions (Reifman, Arnett, & Colwell, 2007). Identity formation is examined in terms of individuals' processes of exploration and commitment, including breadth and depth of self-discovery, the degree of ruminative self-reflection, and the strength of their personal commitments (Luyckx et al., 2008). Progress toward adult roles is viewed through young adults’ subjective sense of adulthood, also related to the achievement of key milestones in the transition into adulthood, such as acquiring an academic degree, leaving the parental home, and achieving financial independence (Arnett, 2001). Psychological distress is understood as encompassing internalizing symptoms of anxiety, depression, and social withdrawal, as well as psychosomatic and externalizing behavioral symptoms (Achenbach, 1997; Steinhausen et al., 2011). Emotional flexibility includes context-sensitive coping choices (Levy-Gigi et al., 2016; Sheppes et al., 2011, 2014), as well as the acceptance of a full range of emotions, both positive and negative (Beblo et al., 2011, Gratz & Roemer, 2004). Resilience is defined as the ability to adaptively manage stress and challenges (Smith et al., 2008). Life satisfaction refers to a global assessment of the perceived quality of one’s own life, also representing a component of subjective well-being (Beierlein et al., 2014). Hence, using these indicators, this study aims to clarify how emotional flexibility might foster identity formation and reduce psychological distress in young adults by exploring its interaction with developmental factors and the experience of transitioning into adulthood. By understanding how emotional adaptability supports mental health, resilience, and life satisfaction in this unique life stage, we hope to inform interventions that foster emotional skills and reduce mental health risks for young adults. These insights contribute to a broader understanding of protective mechanisms that promote psychological adaptation during the inherent challenges of emerging adulthood.
