9DTIC ADA591492: Thermal Conductivity And Large Isotope Effect In GaN From First Principles

We present atomistic first principles results for the lattice thermal conductivity of GaN and compare them to those for GaP, GaAs, and GaSb. In GaN we find a large increase to the thermal conductivity with isotopic enrichment, 65% at room temperature. We show that both the high thermal conductivity and its enhancement with isotopic enrichment in GaN arise from the weak coupling of heat-carrying acoustic phonons with optic phonons. This weak scattering results from stiff atomic bonds and the large Ga to N mass ratio, which give phonons high frequencies and also a pronounced energy gap between acoustic and optic phonons compared to other materials. Rigorous understanding of these features in GaN gives important insights into the interplay between intrinsic phonon-phonon scattering and isotopic scattering in a range of materials.

In a laser triggered spark gap (or spark column) breakdown is initiated by a laser which creates a narrow preionized column between the electrodes. This small plasma column, expands to an arc with a diameter of 0.5-1.0 mm on a time scale of 100 ns, and is capable of carrying a current in excess of 10 kA. During the expansion phase, the resistance of the plasma column decreases from many kilo-ohms to as little as a few tenths of an ohm. For many applications, the duration of the current pulse through the spark gap is only 100-200 ns and therefore is commensurate with the time required for the plasma column to expand. Therefore during the time of interest, the spark column changes from being a dominant resistive loss to being a lossless circuit element in comparison to the load. In order to optimize the performance and minimize the losses, of laser triggered spark gaps operating under these conditions, it is desirable to have a detailed understanding of the physics of the expansion phase of the spark. This report summarizes the first phase of development of a model to achieve that goal. We discuss a model which, from first principles, describes the growth of the arc in a laser triggered spark gap in a gas mixture of a noble gas and a diatomic molecules.

The availability of relatively inexpensive and powerful computing technology has profoundly changed the way in which modern scientific research is conducted in numerous fields. At a rather trivial but highly relevant practical level, the rapid increase in computer power has considerably sped up the pace of theoretical schemes and approaches for simulating bulk material at the atomic level. The results of the simulations have been invaluable in the guidance of experiments and for providing insight into system behavior, particularly under extreme conditions of temperature and pressure. In this respect, a major role has been played by molecular dynamics (MD), which since the pioneering efforts of the 1960s [1, 2] has developed into a mature and active discipline that has been used as a means of simulating and understanding the properties of real systems. More recently, major progress has been achieved in the development of ab initio or first principles MD, in which the potential energy and interatomic forces are derived from accurate quantum mechanical electronic structure calculations that are performed as the simulation proceeds [3-5]. This has greatly improved the predictive power of the simulation and opens the way for the reliable simulation of processes in which chemical bonds are formed and broken. The formation and breaking of chemical bonds is simulated with great difficulty in MD based on classical mechanics and empirically derived reactive potentials [6-9].

This was a two-part numerical study using ANSYS Fluent to develop novel heat sink concepts from first principles. The objective of this research was to highlight geometric structures that incorporate the principles of the stack effect to improve the heat transfer capability of a heat sink under natural convection.The first part investigated the heat transfer/fluid flow characteristics of vertically aligned tubes. The gaps between tubes break up the thermal and velocity boundary layers and the moving fluid within a tube entrains the cooler ambient air surrounding the gap, thus increasing mass flow rate and average Nusselt number through each tube. The optimal gap-to-length ratio varies depending on the number of tubes in the system. The second part built upon the insight gained to develop heat sinks to compare to pin-fin heat sinks. A tube system heat sink provides a significant improvement in the heat transfer capability over a circular pin-fin arrangement, demonstrated by an increase in both the overall heat transferred and average heat transfer coefficient. The principles discussed in this study have the potential to expand the capability of natural convective heat transfer.

In this paper the first step is taken toward a first-principles molecular theory of the liquid-semiconductor interface. The focus is on the degree of rigor that must be applied to the solvent in order to obtain a realistic description of the interfacial electronic properties. To accomplish this, two different water solvent geometries on the H/Si(111)1x1 surface are assumed, and the electronic structure of the system is calculated using two different models for the water molecules, one which includes the electrons of water explicitly and one which does not. Herein, by using first-principles calculations, we attempt to fill this gap by providing atomistic insights into the bonding behaviors of oxygen atom(s) at interfaces constructed by two self-mated diamond (001) or (111) surfaces. The effect of the interfacial oxygen coverage on the optimized interfacial structures is highlighted. The results show that if the oxygen coverage is not higher than 0.5, the two surfaces tend to be connected by oxygen atoms by formation of CeOeC bonds, and thus high friction is expected. Otherwise, the two surfaces keep being separated, and thus low friction is expected. The interfacial electron distributions are manifested to underlie the structural optimizations. Insights gained here together with the findings of T. E. Derry et al. concerning oxygen coverage on diamond surfaces contribute to understanding the unusual frictional behavior of hydrogen-free diamond-like carbons in oxygen atmosphere. 15Correlation Effects In Solids From First Principles

First principles calculations of bandstructures of crystals are usually based on one-particle theories where the electrons are assumed to move in some effective potential. The most commonly used method is based on density functional theory within the local density approximation (LDA). There is, however, no clear justification for interpreting the one-particle eigenvalues as the bandstructure. Indeed, the LDA failure to reproduce the experimental bandstructure is not uncommon. The most famous example is the bandgap problem in semiconductors and insulators where the LDA generally underestimates the gaps. A rigorous approach for calculating bandstructures or quasiparticle energies is provided by the Green function method. The main ingredient is the self-energy operator which acts like an effective potential but unlike in the LDA, it is nonlocal and energy dependent. The selfenergy contains the effects of exchange and correlations. An approximation to the self-energy which has proven fruitful in a wide range of materials is the so-called GW approximation (GWA). This approximation has successfully cured the LDA problems and has produced bandstructures with a rather high accuracy. For example, bandgaps in s-p semiconductors and insulators can be obtained typically to within 0.1-0.2 eV of the experimental values. Despite its success, the GWA has some problems. One of the most serious problems is its inadequacy to describe satellite structures in photoemission spectra. For example, multiple plasmon satellites observed in alkalis cannot be obtained by the GWA. Recently, a theory based on the cumulant expansion was proposed and shown to remedy this problem. Apart from plasmon satellites which are due to long-range correlations, there are also satellite structures arising from short-range correlations. This type of satellite cannot be described by the cumulant expansion. A t-matrix approach was proposed to account for this. Although traditionally the Green function method is used to calculate excitation spectra, groundstate energies can also be obtained from the Green function. Recent works on the electron gas have shown promising results and some approaches for calculating total energies will be discussed. 23First-principles Study Of Rare Earth Based Perovsites XAlO3 (X=Sm, Eu, Gd)for Optoelectronic And Renewable Energy Applications

First-principles method based on density functional theory calculations are employed for investigating the electronic, optical and thermoelectric properties of XAlO 3 (X= Sm, Eu, Gd) for energy-devices applications. The spin-polarized electronic spectra of XAlO 3 depicts their half metallic nature since mere the spin up channel crosses the fermi level. Further, the optical features for instance, the dielectric functions, refractive index, absorption coefficient, extinction coefficient, optical conductivity, reflectivity, and energy loss function are studied which predict that these compounds can be best candidate materials for the ultraviolet-region based optoelectronic and energy devices. Thermoelectric properties in term of electrical and thermal conductivity, and figure of merit show higher values of thermoelectric charecters which is extremely significant for optoelectronic devices. Interestingly, the positive value of Seebeck coefficient indirectly depict that XAlO 3 is a  p-type materials.

Quantum Optimal Control Theory (QOCT) provides the necessary tools to theoretically design driving fields capable of controlling a quantum system towards a given state or along a prescribed path in Hilbert space. This theory must be complemented with a suitable model for describing the dynamics of the quantum system. Here, we are concerned with many electron systems (atoms, molecules, quantum dots, etc) irradiated with laser pulses. The full solution of the many electron Schr{\"{o}}dinger equation is not feasible in general, and therefore, if we aim to an ab initio description, a suitable choice is time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT). In this work, we establish the equations that combine TDDFT with QOCT, and demonstrate their numerical feasibility with examples.

We introduce a new simplified method for computing the electron field emission current in short carbon nanotubes using ab-initio computation in periodic simulation cells. We computed the evolution of the wave functions using Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory, where we have utilized the Crank-Nicholson propagator. We found that in pristine carbon nanotubes, the emitted charge tends to emerge mostly from electrons that are concentrated at the nanotube tip region. The charge beam concentrates into specific channel structures, showing the utility of carbon nanotubes in precision emission applications.

The engineered spin structures recently built and measured in scanning tunneling microscope experiments are calculated using density functional theory. By determining the precise local structure around the surface impurities, we find the Mn atoms can form molecular structures with the binding surface, behaving like surface molecular magnets. The spin structures are confirmed to be antiferromagnetic, and the exchange couplings are calculated within 8% of the experimental values simply by collinear-spin GGA+U calculations. We can also explain why the exchange couplings significantly change with different impurity binding sites from the determined local structure. The bond polarity is studied by calculating the atomic charges with and without the Mn adatoms.

The physical mechanisms behind the reduction of the bulk modulus of a high-pressure cubic TiO2 phase are confirmed by first-principles calculations. An unusual and abrupt change occurs in the dependence of energy on pressure at 43 GPa, indicating a pressure-induced phase transition from columbite TiO2 to a newly-identified modified fluorite TiO2 with a Pca21 symmetry. Oxygen atom displacement in Pca21 TiO2 unexpectedly reduces the bulk modulus by 34% relative to fluorite TiO2. This discovering provides a direct evidence for understanding the compressive properties of such groups of homologous materials

We use a recently developed self-consistent GW approximation to present first principles calculations of the conduction band spin splitting in GaAs under [110] strain. The spin orbit interaction is taken into account as a perturbation to the scalar relativistic hamiltonian. These are the first calculations of conduction band spin splitting under deformation based on a quasiparticle approach; and because the self-consistent GW scheme accurately reproduces the relevant band parameters, it is expected to be a reliable predictor of spin splittings. We also discuss the spin relaxation time under [110] strain and show that it exhibits an in-plane anisotropy, which can be exploited to obtain the magnitude and sign of the conduction band spin splitting experimentally.

The full-potential linear augmented plane-wave calculations have been applied to investigate the systematic change of electronic structures in CaAlSi due to different stacking sequences of AlSi layers. The present ab-initio calculations have revealed that the multistacking, buckling and 60 degrees rotation of AlSi layer affect the electronic band structure in this system. In particular, such a structural perturbation gives rise to the disconnected and cylindrical Fermi surface along the M-L lines of the hexagonal Brillouin zone. This means that multistacked CaAlSi with the buckling AlSi layers increases degree of two-dimensional electronic characters, and it gives us qualitative understanding for the quite different upper critical field anisotropy between specimens with and without superstructure as reported previously.

Using first-principles density functional calculations, we have studied the structural stability of stoichiometric as well as non-stoichiometric CdS nanoclusters at ambient pressure with diameters ranging up to about 2.5 nm. Our study reveals that the relative stability of the two available structures for CdS, namely zinc blende and wurtzite, depends sensitively on the details like surface geometry and/or surface chemistry. The associated band gap also exhibits non-monotonic behavior as a function of cluster size. Our findings may shed light on reports of experimentally observed structures and associated electronic structures of CdS nanoclusters found in the literature.

The structural, electronic, and optical properties of 4 A single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) contained inside the zeolite channels have been studied based upon the density-functional theory in the local-density approximation (LDA). Our calculated results indicate that the relaxed geometrical structures for the smallest SWNTs in the zeolite channels are much different from those of the ideal isolated SWNTs, producing a great effect on their physical properties. It is found that all three kinds of 4 A SWNTs can possibly exist inside the Zeolite channels. Especially, as an example, we have also studied the coupling effect between the ALPO_4-5 zeolite and the tube (5,0) inside it, and found that the zeolite has real effects on the electronic structure and optical properties of the inside (5,0) tube.

48Dimensional Crossover Of Thermal Conductance In Graphene Nanoribbons: A First-principles Approach

First-principles density-functional calculations are performed to investigate the thermal transport properties in graphene nanoribbons (GNRs). The dimensional crossover of thermal conductance from one to two dimensions (2D) is clearly demonstrated with increasing ribbon width. The thermal conductance of GNRs in a few nanometer width already exhibits an approximate low-temperature dependence of $T^{1.5}$, like that of 2D graphene sheet which is attributed to the quadratic nature of dispersion relation for the out-of-plane acoustic phonon modes. Using a zone-folding method, we heuristically derive the dimensional crossover of thermal conductance with the increase of ribbon width. Combining our calculations with the experimental phonon mean-free path, some typical values of thermal conductivity at room temperature are estimated for GNRs and for 2D graphene sheet, respectively. Our findings clarify the issue of low-temperature dependence of thermal transport in GNRs and suggest a calibration range of thermal conductivity for experimental measurements in graphene-based materials.

49Electronic Structure, Phase Stability And Resistivity Of Hybrid Hexagonal C$_x$(BN)$_{1-x}$ Two-dimensional Nanomaterial: A First-principles Study

We use density functional theory based first-principles method to investigate the bandstructure and phase stability in the laterally grown hexagonal C$_x$(BN)$_{1-x}$, two-dimensional Graphene and $h$-BN hybrid nanomaterials, which were synthesized by experimental groups recently (Liu $et al$, Nature Nanotech, 8, 119 (2013)). Our detail electronic structure calculations on such materials, with both armchair and zigzag interfaces between the Graphene and $ h$-BN domains, indicate that the band-gap decreases non-monotonically with the concentration of Carbon. The calculated bandstructure shows the onset of Dirac cone like features near the band-gap at high Carbon concentration ($x \sim 0.8$). From the calculated energy of formation, the phase stability of C$_x$(BN)$_{1-x}$ was studied using a regular solution model and the system was found to be in the ordered phase below a few thousand Kelvin. Furthermore, using the Boltzmann transport theory we calculate the electrical resistivity from the bandstrcture of C$_x$(BN)$_{1-x}$ at different temperature ($T$), which shows a linear behaviour when plotted in the logarithmic scale against $T^{-1}$, as observed experimentally

                          “The Philosophy of Style,” explored a growing trend of formalist approaches to writing. Highly focused on the proper placement and ordering of the parts of an English sentence, [Spencer] created a guide for effective composition. Spencer’s aim was to free prose writing from as much "friction and inertia" as possible, so that the reader would not be slowed by strenuous deliberations concerning the proper context and meaning of a sentence.                           Social Statics, or The Conditions essential to Happiness specified, and the First of them Developed is an 1851 book by the British polymath Herbert Spencer. In it, he uses the term "fitness" in applying his ideas of Lamarckian evolution to society, saying for example that "It is clear that any being whose constitution is to be moulded into fitness for new conditions of existence must be placed under those conditions. Or, putting the proposition specifically — it is clear that man can become adapted to the social state, only by being retained in the social state. This granted, it follows that as man has been, and is still, deficient in those feelings which, by dictating just conduct, prevent the perpetual antagonism of individuals and their consequent disunion, some artificial agency is required by which their union may be maintained. Only by the process of adaptation itself can be produced that character which makes social equilibrium spontaneous." Despite its commonly being attributed to this book, it was not until his Principles of Biology of 1864 that Spencer coined the phrase "survival of the fittest", which he would later apply to economics and biology. This was a key tenet of so-called Social Darwinism. Economist Murray Rothbard called Social Statics "the greatest single work of libertarian political philosophy ever written. (Wikipedia)

He did not desire a public life, being content as a writer of "occasional" verse and vers de société.<br>His writings were greatly appreciated by his contemporaries, being warmly praised by such figures as Sir Walter Scott, John Wilson, and Lord Byron.
