Australian wildfires have displaced thousands and led to at least 20 deaths with dozens more missing, and temperatures above 40 degrees making the situation worse. About 87 Canadian firefighters are currently in the fire-stricken country helping to battle the deadly wildfires, marking the first time Canada has made a coordinated effort to send firefighters to the southern nation. To give the latest on the Canadians fighting the fires and what they're doing to help the situation, John is joined by Melanie Morin with the Winnipeg-based Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre, where the efforts are being coordinated.

The self-described best manager in the Barclays Premier League is unemployed. Newcastle United fired manager John Carver Tuesday after he kept the Magpies from relegation- barely. He took charge for the final 20 games of the season, and only won 3. Former England and Derby County manager Steve McClaren is expected to be named Carver's successor later this week. Biomass burning along the border between Bolivia (left) and Brazil (top and right) has been intense and widespread for more than two months. This true-color image acquired on September 14, 2004, by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), aboard NASA's aqua.nasa.gov Aqua satellite, shows a large number of fires (red dots) are still burning, producing a thick pall of smoke that obscures the landscape over much of central South America. Such large-scale burning in the Amazon Rainforest is not a natural occurrence, and the forest is not well adapted to fire, unlike the pine- and fir-dominated forests of the western United States. As people use slash-and-burn deforestation to create new farmland, the impacts are felt far beyond the location of the fire. The smoke inhibits cloud formation and rainfall, and causes the rain that does fall to come down in heavier outbursts. Fires escape control and invade managed timber plantations, undisturbed forest, and permanent agriculture. There are more fires in the Mississippi Valley, the Plains and the Southeast every year than there are out West, but they are generally much smaller and do not gain the attention of the national news media. In the northern Rocky Mountains of Idaho and Montana, dozens of large, dangerous wildfires burned tens of thousands of acres in late July and early August 2007. Several communities in Montana were under evacuation on August 1, according to the daily report from the www.nifc.gov/ National Interagency Fire Center. Like much of the United States (with the notable exception of the southern earthobservatory.nasa.gov/NaturalHazards/natural_hazards_v2.php3?img_id=14356 Great Plains ), the Northern Rockies of Montana and Idaho were experiencing moderate to severe drought in late July according to the weekly report from the U.S. Drought Monitor. This image of Montana (with a little bit of Idaho included in the lower-left corner) was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer modis.gsfc.nasa.gov (MODIS) on NASA's aqua.nasa.gov Aqua satellite on July 31, 2007. Locations where the sensor detected actively burning fires are outlined in red. A westerly wind appeared to have been blowing at the time of the image (2:30 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time), and plumes of smoke spread from the mountains over the state's eastern plains. As of August 1, the Meriwether (20,745 acres) and Ahorn (36,311 acres) were the largest fires in the scene, but the Skyland Fire had grown most rapidly in the previous 24 hours; it grew by an estimated 7,505 acres to a total of 16,055 acres. The Forest Service and its partners use the MODIS fire maps to help them make strategic decisions about where firefighting resources are needed at a national level. This modis.gsfc.nasa.gov Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from April 5, 2003, shows a dust storm blowing in from the northwest over Iraq. A haze of tan pixels hangs over the image at upper left, showing the approach of the storm. At top center, clouds are taking on a dusty appearance. In southern Iraq and near Baghdad, hot spot detections (red dots) show the location of probable oil fires, while farther east, the hot spots may be flares and other small fires associated with normal oil refinery operations.
