Those most likely to have to flee their homes are Indigenous people, and this disproportionate risk is only growing. The number of evacuees from First Nation reserves doubled over the last decade. About 87 Canadian firefighters are currently in the fire-stricken country helping to battle the deadly wildfires, marking the first time Canada has made a coordinated effort to send firefighters to the southern nation. To give the latest on the Canadians fighting the fires and what they're doing to help the situation, John is joined by Melanie Morin with the Winnipeg-based Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre, where the efforts are being coordinated.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA«És Aqua satellite captured this true-color image on October 6, 2009. Fires burn north, south, and inland from the coastal city of Cairns. Smoke from the fires consistently blows inland, toward the east or east-southeast. Red outlines indicate hotspots associated with high surface temperatures. On October 7, 2009, an article in The Cour ier-Mail warned of significant fire dangers for the coming summer. Rains the previous spring had boosted vegetation growth, but hot temperatures and dry conditions had left that vegetation prone to burning. In addition, the monsoon and cyclone season was expected to arrive a month late. A total of 1,700 fires had been contained in just the previous two weeks. A fast-moving, wind-fueled wildfire swept into Ventura County early this morning. It burned 45,500 acres, destroying homes and forcing 27,000 people to evacuate. Ashlee Mullany, US Correspondent for 7 News Sydney, is live from the area.

This true-color image acquired on September 14, 2004, by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), aboard NASA's aqua.nasa.gov Aqua satellite, shows a large number of fires (red dots) are still burning, producing a thick pall of smoke that obscures the landscape over much of central South America. Such large-scale burning in the Amazon Rainforest is not a natural occurrence, and the forest is not well adapted to fire, unlike the pine- and fir-dominated forests of the western United States. As people use slash-and-burn deforestation to create new farmland, the impacts are felt far beyond the location of the fire. The smoke inhibits cloud formation and rainfall, and causes the rain that does fall to come down in heavier outbursts. Fires escape control and invade managed timber plantations, undisturbed forest, and permanent agriculture.
