Welcome to the wild side of firefighting. Our wildland team and Incident Management Team members have had a very busy summer so far. In total, they have deployed to nine wildfires and traveled throughout the state of Oregon. It's a privilege to serve communities in their time of need and we are grateful to the Oregon State Fire Marshal and our partner agencies in Clackamas, Washington, and Yamhill counties who we have rode together with. Fire season isn't over yet. Please use caution when recreating, and be aware of local fire restrictions.

Dare County's 15 fire departments are in need of volunteers. These men and women work together up and down the beach to protect our communities in several different ways. Display technologies in the current market range from the simple and cheap incandescent bulb behind a graphic overlay to the upwardly expensive flat panel high definition plasma display. To provide a foundation of understanding for Light Emitting Polymers (LEP), samples were imaged in a scanning electron microscope. This was preformed to identify a potential method for answering questions on polymer charge mobility and diffusion mechanisms, which are currently unknown. Light Emitting Polymer (LEP) displays offer a viable alternative to the active matrix style, when an application calls for information to be sent in a simple visible format. By using the flexibility of the fabrication process, LEP displays can be applied to offer a low cost, lightweight, and durable means of communicating information during shipboard damage control and firefighting. A unique screen printing method was used in collaboration with Add-Vision, to produce a prototype that was designed, fabricated and tested for use in Naval shipboard firefighting evolutions. The application of the LEP technology to shipboard damage control was motivated by the experience gained from being both the Officer in Charge of a Naval Firefighting School and from time in the Fleet as a Damage Control Officer.

It includes rare footage from the earliest "proof of concept" DC-7 air tanker test drops sponsored by LA County Fire Department in 1953; Major Schrader's dropping mechanism developed at El Toro Marine Base in 1954; tests with helicopters and air tankers at the multi-agency FIRESTOP exercise in 1954 at Camp Pendleton; the development of various tools for use with small helicopters; footage from drop tests of airtankers made at Willows, Santa Ana and Ramona from 1955-59 and tests made with Marine helitankers at the Santa Ana Marine Base air facility. The film concludes with the application of these tools in fire control work.

Cuts to Firefighting Aircraft - As California grapples with an early fire season, the state may feel the pain of automatic spending cuts soon. The City of San Diego has added a brush fire engine and four firefighters at the County Fire Authority's San Pasqual Fire Station.

Firefighting trainees conduct fire control exercises using a prototype simulator known as the Emergency Management Computer Aided Training System (EMCAT). Developed by Marshall Space Flight Center (MFS) in response to a request from the Huntsville (AL) Fire Department, EMCAT enables a trainee to assume the role of fireground commander and make quick decisions on best use of his fire fighting personnel and equipment.

MFRD Public Information Officer Ashley McDonald participates in every day firefighter tasks in this comical, yet educational new series. In this episode, McDonald learns how to don turnout gear properly and attempts to comply with NFPA standards of donning equipment in two minutes or less.

Modern navies have faced new roles and challenges during the last decade. From purely defensive responsibilities, modern navies have now taken on such multiple challenges in the worldwide theater, as peace keeping missions, humanitarian assistance, anti-piracy support, disaster assistance and others, both military and sociological in scope. Furthermore, the increasing complexity of these missions mandates a strong, constant operational readiness and a high level of performance in the full spectrum of a ship's activities. In order for these missions to be accomplished successfully, survivability is the foremost concern, and the cornerstone of survivability is damage control. Permanent, continuous and high-level damage control and firefighting training for all crewmembers of a navy ship is paramount. Hopefully, this training can be achieved safely, efficiently and economically by using simulation and training simulator platforms, which have dominated the training field in the last few decades. After participating in damage control and firefighting courses, investigating the main training system components, and administering surveys to instructors and students regarding subjective ratings and opinions about the training system, we found that the U.S. Navy Damage Control & Firefighting Training at San Diego location is very effective, valuable, and beneficial to ships crews and the U.S. Navy.

This preliminary report focuses on the research and development (R&D) and demonstration of an unmanned ground system (UGS) technology suitable for tele-operated and autonomous robotic firefighting. The R&D effort was conducted by the Air Force Research Laboratory's (AFRL), Materials and Manufacturing Directorate (RXQ), Airbase Engineering Development Branch (RXQE). RXQE performed the demonstration at Ft. Drum, NY, a U.S. Army military reservation in support of AFRL's 2010 Tech Warrior Exercise. The demonstration involved the use of AFRL's developed unmanned firefighting vehicle (UFV), known as the Fire Defender, to showcase first generation autonomous UFV behaviors to assist emergency first responders/firefighters in hazardous fire environments.

The findings from previous studies of men wearing firefighting clothing suggest a high potential for individual heat strain associated with firefighting. However, no study has determined the level of heat strain during actual firefighting conditions. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the level of heat strain experienced by U.S. Navy personnel while combating fires aboard a fire research ship. Subject volunteers (n=9) were recorded for rectal and mean skin temperatures and heart rate during three fire test days. Air temperatures in the compartment containing the fire to be extinguished averaged 470 + or - 170 deg c, while air temperatures in the compartment from which the fire was fought ranged from 40 to 125 deg C. Peak values for rectal temperature averaged 39.2 + or - 1.O deg C, while peak mean skin temperature averaged 39.5 + or + 0.9 deg C. Peak body heat storage averaged 2.02 + or - 0.77 kcal.kg-1 and peak heart rate averaged 186 + or - 13 bpm. our findings indicate that shipboard firefighting is associated with a remarkable level of individual heat strain. These findings have applications to operational training programs, generation of exposure guidelines, and development of heat strain countermeasures. Heat strain, Shipboard firefighting.

The design and implementation of this paper are mainly based on control of the autonomous firefighting robot. In recent years, robotics has turned out to be an ingredient in which many people have shown their interest. Robotics has gained popularity due to the advancement of many technologies of computing and nanotechnologies. The output of the fire sensor is connected to the Arduino controller that controls the movement of the vehicle and the operation of spraying water. An infrared sensing circuit is designed with the infrared sensors placed in front of the vehicle to avoid collision with the obstacles. A total of two inbuilt reduction geared direct current motors are used in the paper for the robot movement in all the directions forward, backward, right, and left directions. For more practicality, a small water tank with a pumping motor is also arranged over the chassis and the water sprinkler pipe that is firmly fixed over the plate where the sensor is arranged can deliver water with some force. When the sensor detects the fire, the sprinkler is positioned toward fire flames; the pumping motor will be energized automatically to extinguish the fire. The main advantage of the proposed system automatically controls the fire by using advanced control techniques.
