2Regularization Of Fields For Self-force Problems In Curved Spacetime: Foundations And A Time-domain Application

By

We propose an approach for the calculation of self-forces, energy fluxes and waveforms arising from moving point charges in curved spacetimes. As opposed to mode-sum schemes that regularize the self-force derived from the singular retarded field, this approach regularizes the retarded field itself. The singular part of the retarded field is first analytically identified and removed, yielding a finite, differentiable remainder from which the self-force is easily calculated. This regular remainder solves a wave equation which enjoys the benefit of having a non-singular source. Solving this wave equation for the remainder completely avoids the calculation of the singular retarded field along with the attendant difficulties associated with numerically modeling a delta function source. From this differentiable remainder one may compute the self-force, the energy flux, and also a waveform which reflects the effects of the self-force. As a test of principle, we implement this method using a 4th-order (1+1) code, and calculate the self-force for the simple case of a scalar charge moving in a circular orbit around a Schwarzschild black hole. We achieve agreement with frequency-domain results to ~ 0.1% or better.

7DTIC ADA304228: Ab Initio Calculation Of Vibrational Circular Dichroism Spectra Using Large Basis Set MP2 Force Fields.

By

Ab initio calculations of the vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra of 2,3-trans-d2-oxirane (1), 1,2-trans-d2-cyclopropane (2), 1-(13)C-1,2,3-anti-d3-cyclopropane (3), and propylene oxide (4) based on (5s4p2d/3s2p) MP2 harmonic force fields are reported. The results are in perfect qualitative and good quantitative agreement with existing experimental VCD spectra except in the C-H stretching region of 4 where Fermi resonance occurs. Calculations for 1-3 using a larger (8s6p3d/6s3p) basis set exhibit insensitivity to a substantial increase in basis set size. jg

9The Energy Landscape Of Silicon Systems And Its Description By Force Fields, Tight Binding Schemes, Density Functional Methods And Quantum Monte Carlo Methods

By

The accuracy of the energy landscape of silicon systems obtained from various density functional methods, a tight binding scheme and force fields is studied. Quantum Monte Carlo results serve as quasi exact reference values. In addition to the well known accuracy of DFT methods for geometric ground states and metastable configurations we find that DFT methods give a similar accuracy for transition states and thus a good overall description of the energy landscape. On the other hand, force fields give a very poor description of the landscape that are in most cases too rugged and contain many fake local minima and saddle points or ones that have the wrong height.

10NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19980019495: Accurate Ab Initio Quartic Force Fields, Vibrational Frequencies, And Heats Of Formation For FCN, FNC, ClCN, And ClNC

By

The XCN and XNC (X = F, Cl) isomers have been investigated using the CCSD(T) method in conjunction with correlation consistent basis sets. Equilibrium geometries, harmonic frequencies, anharmonic constants, fundamental frequencies, and heats of formation have been evaluated. Agreement with experiment for the fundamental frequencies is very good, even for nu(sub 2), for CICN, which is subject to a strong Fermi resonance with 2nu(sub 3). It is also shown that a second-order perturbation theory approach to solving the nuclear Schroedinger equation gives results in excellent agreement with essentially exact variational calculations. This is true even for nu(sub 2) of ClCN, provided that near-singular terms are eliminated from the perturbation theory formulas and the appropriate Fermi interaction energy matrix is then diagonalized. A band at 615/cm, tentatively assigned as the Cl-N stretch in ClNC in matrix isolation experiments, is shown not to be due to ClNC. Accurate atomization energies are determined and are used to evaluate accurate heats of formation (3.1 +/- 1.5, 33.2 +/- 1.5, 72.6 +/- 1.5, and 75.9 +/- 1.5 kcal/mol for FCN, ClCN, FNC, and ClNC, respectively). It is expected that the theoretical heats of formation for FCN, FNC, and ClNC are the most accurate available.

13Time Evolution Of Relativistic Force-Free Fields Connecting A Neutron Star And Its Disk

By

We study the magnetic interaction between a neutron star and its disk by solving the time-dependent relativistic force-free equations. At the initial state, we assume that the dipole magnetic field of the neutron star connects the neutron star and its equatorial disk, which deeply enters into the magnetosphere of the neutron star. Magnetic fields are assumed to be frozen to the star and the disk. The rotation of the neutron star and the disk is imposed as boundary conditions. We apply Harten-Lax-van Leer (HLL) method to simulate the evolution of the star-disk system. We carry out simulations for (1) a disk inside the corotation radius, in which the disk rotates faster than the star, and (2) a disk outside the corotation radius, in which the neutron star rotates faster than the disk. Numerical results indicate that for both models, the magnetic field lines connecting the disk and the star inflate as they are twisted by the differential rotation between the disk and the star. When the twist angle exceeds pi radian, the magnetic field lines expand with speed close to the light speed. This mechanism can be the origin of relativistic outflows observed in binaries containing a neutron star.

14DTIC ADA215613: A Study Of Air Force Company Grade Officer Value Systems In Selected Career Fields And Their Correlation With Career Intentions.

By

The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between the personal values of Air Force company grade officers and their decision of whether or not to remain in the Air Force for a career. The study objectives were to determine whether officer value systems are correlated with different levels of career intent, to determine if these value systems are unique, and to synopsize the past research into Air Force officer values conducted at AFIT. The study is based on the findings of this past research which showed that officers in different career fields and as a group do possess unique and measureable value systems. The study found that officers who expressed a common level of career intent also shared a common set of values, and these sets of values differed from those shared by officers expressing a different level of career intent. The study also found that different subgroups of officers, when separated by job type and level of career intent, exhibit no only common by also unique value hierarchies. These findings should be considered preliminary because of the limited sample of career fields and the insignificant sample sizes of several of the subgroups studied. By

The unpolarized absorption and circular dichroism spectra of the fundamental vibrational transitions of the chiral molecule, 4-methyl-2-oxetanone, are calculated ab initio. Harmonic force fields are obtained using Density Functional Theory (DFT), MP2, and SCF methodologies and a 5S4P2D/3S2P (TZ2P) basis set. DFT calculations use the Local Spin Density Approximation (LSDA), BLYP, and Becke3LYP (B3LYP) density functionals. Mid-IR spectra predicted using LSDA, BLYP, and B3LYP force fields are of significantly different quality, the B3LYP force field yielding spectra in clearly superior, and overall excellent, agreement with experiment. The MP2 force field yields spectra in slightly worse agreement with experiment than the B3LYP force field. The SCF force field yields spectra in poor agreement with experiment. The basis set dependence of B3LYP force fields is also explored: the 6-31G* and TZ2P basis sets give very similar results while the 3-21G basis set yields spectra in substantially worse agreements with experiment. jg

19Parametrization Of Coarse Grained Force Fields For Dynamic Property Of Ethylene Glycol Oligomers/water Binary Mixtures

By

To evaluate shear viscosity of ethylene glycol oligomers (EGO)/water binary mixture by means of coarse-grained molecular dynamics (CG-MD) simulations, we proposed the self-diffusion-coefficient-based parameterization of non-bonded interactions among CG particles. Our parameterization procedure consists of three steps: 1) determination of bonded potentials, 2) scaling for time and solvent diffusivity, and 3) optimization of Lennard-Jones parameters to reproduce experimental self-diffusion coefficient and density data. With the determined parameters and the scaling relations, we evaluated shear viscosities of aqueous solutions of EGOs with various molecular weights and concentrations. Our simulation result are in close agreement with the experimental data. The largest simulation in this article corresponds to a 1.2 microseconds atomistic simulation for 100,000 atoms. Our CG model with the parameterization scheme for CG particles may be useful to study the dynamic properties of a liquid which contains relatively low molecular weight polymers or oligomers.

20Manipulation And Amplification Of The Casimir Force Through Surface Fields Using Helicity

By

We present both exact and numerical results for the behavior of the Casimir force in $O(n)$ systems with a finite extension in one direction when the system is subjected to surface fields that induce helicity in the order parameter. We show that for such systems the Casimir force in certain temperature ranges is of the order of $L^{-2}$, both above and below the critical temperature, $T_c$, of the bulk system. An example of such a system would be one with chemically modulated bounding surfaces, in which the modulation couples directly to the system's order parameter. We demonstrate that, depending on the parameters of the system, the Casimir force can be either attractive or repulsive. The exact calculations presented are for the one dimensional $XY$ and Heisenberg models under twisted boundary conditions resulting from finite surface fields that differ in direction by a specified angle and the three dimensional Gaussian model with surface fields in the form of plane waves that are shifted in phase with respect to each other. Additionally, we present exact and numerical results for the mean field version of the three dimensional $O(2)$ model with finite surface fields on the bounding surfaces. We find that all significant results are consistent with the expectations of finite size scaling.

21On The Force-Freeness Of The Photospheric Sunspot Magnetic Fields As Observed From Hinode (SOT/SP)

By

A magnetic field is force-free if there is no interaction between the magnetic field and plasma in surrounding atmosphere i.e., electric currents are aligned with the magnetic field, giving rise to zero Lorentz force. Computation of various magnetic parameters such as magnetic energy, gradient of twist of sunspot fields and any kind of extrapolations, heavily hinge on the force-free approximation of the photospheric sunspot magnetic fields. Thus it is important to inspect the force-freeness of sunspot fields. The force-freeness of sunspot magnetic fields has been examined earlier by some researchers ending with incoherent results. Accurate photospheric vector field measurements with high spatial resolution are required to inspect the force-free nature of sunspots. We use several such vector magnetograms obtained from the Solar Optical Telescope/Spectro-Polarimeter aboard the Hinode. Both necessary and sufficient conditions for force-freeness are examined by checking global and local nature of magnetic forces over sunspots. We find that the sunspot magnetic fields are not much away from force-free configuration, although they are not completely force-free on the photosphere. The umbral and inner penumbral fields are more force-free than the middle and the outer penumbral fields. During their evolution, sunspot magnetic fields are found to maintain their proximity to force-free behaviour. Although a dependence of net Lorentz force components is seen on the evolutionary stages of the sunspots, we don't find a systematic relationship between the nature of sunspot fields and associated flare activity. Further, we examine whether the fields at photosphere follow linear or non-linear force free conditions. After examining this in various complex and simple sunspots we conclude that,in either case, the photospheric sunspot fields are closer to satisfy non linear force-free field approximation.

24The Force-Free Electrodynamics Method For The Extrapolation Of Coronal Magnetic Fields From Vector Magnetograms

By

We present a new improved version of our force-free electrodynamics (FFE) numerical code in spherical coordinates that extrapolates the magnetic field in the inner solar corona from a photospheric vector magnetogram. The code satisfies the photospheric boundary condition and the condition divB=0 to machine accuracy. The performance of our method is evaluated with standard convergence parameters, and is found to be comparable to that of other nonlinear force-free extrapolations.

25Observation Of The Intrinsic Abraham Force In Time-varying Magnetic And Electric Fields

By

The Abraham force exerted by a time-dependent electromagnetic field on neutral, polarizable matter has two contributions. The one induced by a time-varying magnetic field and a static electric field is reported here for the first time. We discuss our results in the context of the radiative momentum in matter. Our observations are consistent with Abraham's and Nelson's versions for radiative momentum.

27Effects Of Electrostatic Fields And Casimir Force On Cantilever Vibrations

By

The effect of an external bias voltage and fluctuating electromagnetic fields on both the fundamental frequency and damping of cantilever vibrations is considered. An external voltage induces surface charges causing cantilever-sample electrostatic attraction. A similar effect arises from charged defects in dielectrics that cause spatial fluctuations of electrostatic fields. The cantilever motion results in charge displacements giving rise to Joule losses and damping. It is shown that the dissipation increases with decreasing conductivity and thickness of the substrate, a result that is potentially useful for sample diagnostics. Fluctuating electromagnetic fields between the two surfaces also induce attractive (Casimir) forces. It is shown that the shift in the cantilever fundamental frequency due to the Casimir force is close to the shift observed in recent experiments of Stipe et al. Both the electrostatic and Casimir forces have a strong effect on the cantilever eigenfrequencies, and both effects depend on the geometry of the cantilever tip. We consider cylindrical, spherical, and ellipsoidal tips moving parallel to a flat sample surface. The dependence of the cantilever effective mass and vibrational frequencies on the geometry of the tip is studied both numerically and analytically.

28Design Of Force Fields From Data At Finite Temperature

By

We investigate the problem of how to obtain the force field between atoms of an experimentally determined structure. We show how this problem can be efficiently solved, even at finite temperature, where the position of the atoms differs substantially from the ground state. We apply our method to systems modeling proteins and demonstrate that the correct potentials can be recovered even in the presence of thermal noise.

29DTIC ADA203030: Force-Free Magnetic Fields: Is There A 'Loss Of Equilibrium'?

By

This paper examines concept in solar physics that is known as loss of equilibrium in which a sequence of force-free magnetic fields, said to represent a possible quasi-static evolution of solar magnetic fields, reaches a critical configuration beyond which no acceptable solution of the prescribed form exists. This concept is used to explain eruptive phenomena ranging from solar flares to coronal mass ejections. Certain sequences of force-free configurations are discussed that exhibit a loss of equilibrium, and it is argued that the concept is devoid of physical significance since each sequence is defined a way that does not represent an acceptable thought experiment. For example, the sequence may be defined in terms of a global constraint on the boundary conditions, or the evolution of the sequence may require the creation of magnetic flux that is not connected to the photosphere and is not present in the original configuration. The global constraints typically occur in using the so-called generating function method. An acceptable thought experiment is proposed to specify the field configuration in terms of photospheric boundary conditions comprising the normal component of the field and the field-line connectivity. Consider a magnetic-field sequence that, when described in terms of a generating function, exhibits a loss of equilibrium and show that, when one instead defines the sequence in terms of the corresponding boundary conditions, the sequence is well behaved.

32Metric-independence Of Vacuum And Force-free Electromagnetic Fields

By

Electromagnetic fields which solve the vacuum Maxwell equations in one spacetime are well-known to also be solutions in all spacetimes with conformally-related metrics. This provides a sense in which electromagnetism alone cannot be used to measure certain aspects of geometry. We show that there is actually much more which cannot be so measured; relatively little of a spacetime's geometry is in fact imprinted in any particular electromagnetic field. This is demonstrated by finding a much larger class of metric transformations---involving five free functions---which preserve Maxwell solutions both in vacuum, without local currents, and also for the force-free electrodynamics associated with a tenuous plasma. One consequence of this is that many of the exact force-free fields which have previously been found around Schwarzschild and Kerr black holes are also solutions in appropriately-identified flat backgrounds. As a more direct application, we use our metric transformations to write down a large class of electromagnetic waves which remain unchanged by a large class of gravitational waves propagating "in the same direction."

The evolution of such surface has been investigated by Schn\"urer and Smoczyk (Evolution of hypersurfaces in central force fields, J. Reine Angew. Math. 550 (2002), 77-95). To study its motion, we introduce a quasi-linear degenerate hyperbolic equation which describes the motion of the surfaces extrinsically. Our main results show that the large time existence of such Cauchy problem and the stability with respect to small initial data. When the radially symmetric potential function $v\equiv1$, the local existence and stability results have been obtained by Notz (Closed Hypersurfaces driven by mean curvature and inner pressure, Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 66(5) (2013), 790-819). The proof is based on a new Nash-Moser iteration scheme.

34On The Controllability Of The Vlasov-Poisson System In The Presence Of External Force Fields

By

In this work, we are interested in the controllability of Vlasov-Poisson systems in the presence of an external force field (namely a bounded force field or a magnetic field), by means of a local interior control. We are able to extend the results of [7], where the only present force was the self-consistent electric field.

35A Fields Only Version Of The Lorentz Force Law: Particles Replaced By Their Fields

By

We show that the Lorentz force law, F^L_1=q_1(E+v_1xB) being the charge on particle 1 interacting with the electromagnetic fields due to all other particles, can be written in a pure field form F^L_1=-\nabla_1 U^{EM}. In this expression U^{EM} is the total electromagnetic energy of the system of particle 1 and all other particles. In deriving this result we review the old but not widely known results that Maxwell's equations follow uniquely from Special Relativity, and that the Lorentz force law follows from applying Hamilton's variational principle to this result. For a two particle system, the standard view is that the electromagnetic force on particle 1 is the result of the charge of particle 1 interacting locally with the field of particle 2, and conversely. Both charges 1 and 2, and fields 1 and 2 are needed. In our approach, the fields of all particles contribute to the electromagnetic interaction everywhere, over all of space. The charges of the particles do not enter the theory except incidentally, via Gauss's law. This has novel interpretational consequences. In particular, it allows a charged particle to be replaced by its electric and magnetic fields, much as a particle in quantum mechanics is replaced by its complex valued wavefunction.

37Improved Parameterization Of Amine-Carboxyate And Amine-Phosphate Interactions For Molecular Dynamics Simulations Using The CHARMM And AMBER Force Fields

By

Over the past decades, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of biomolecules have become a mainstream biophysics technique. As the length and time scales amenable to the MD method increase, shortcomings of the empirical force fields---which have been developed and validated using relatively short simulations of small molecules---become apparent. One common artifact is aggregation of water-soluble biomolecules driven by artificially strong charge--charge interactions. Here, we report a systematic refinement of Lennard-Jones parameters (NBFIX) describing amine--carboxylate and amine--phosphate interactions, which brings MD simulations of basic peptide-mediated nucleic acids assemblies and lipid bilayer membranes in better agreement with experiment. As our refinement neither affects the existing parameterization of bonded interaction nor does it alter the solvation free energies, it improves realism of an MD simulation without introducing additional artifacts.

40DTIC ADA363963: The Utilization Of Men And Women In Enlisted US Air Force Career Fields

By

The differences in the utilization of men and women in enlisted US Air Force (USAF) career ladders were investigated to determine trends among gender groups. Career ladders were selected from Occupational Survey Reports (OSRs) published in 1995 and 1996. The results indicated that males and females performed many of the same tasks; however, at the 5-skill level, men performed more tasks than women in all the analyzed career ladders. Women reported spending more time performing general administrative and supply duties. Men reported spending more time on technical or supervisory duties. Many career ladders were not examined because of the low numbers of females at the fully qualified worker level. In 1956, the US Air Force Occupational Analysis Program was developed to research and analyze career fields within the USAF. An operational survey program was established in 1967. Every five years, an Occupational Survey Report (OSR) is produced for each enlisted career ladder. To complete this analysis, a job inventory, used to collect job and task information, is developed through face-to-face interviews with subject-matter experts from each enlisted career field in the USAF Air Force. Then, members of the career ladder are surveyed to obtain current task and equipment data for use in developing and updating training programs. The data are analyzed using the Comprehensive Occupational Data Analysis Program, which is a set of computer programs used to automate, process, organize, and report occupational data (OSR Handbook 1993). Finally, the data are examined by occupational analysts, and significant trends and implications are reported in the final Occupational Survey Report. In 1995, the HQ USAF Human Resources Development Division tasked the Air Force Occupational Measurement Squadron (AFOMS) to investigate the differences in the utilization of personnel between military, men and women.

41On The Topological Characterization Of Near Force-Free Magnetic Fields, And The Work Of Late-onset Visually-impaired Topologists

By

The Giroux correspondence and the notion of a near force-free magnetic field are used to topologically characterize near force-free magnetic fields which describe a variety of physical processes, including plasma equilibrium. As a byproduct, the topological characterization of force-free magnetic fields associated with current-carrying links, as conjectured by Crager and Kotiuga, is shown to be necessary and conditions for sufficiency are given. Along the way a paradox is exposed: The seemingly unintuitive mathematical tools, often associated to higher dimensional topology, have their origins in three dimensional contexts but in the hands of late-onset visually impaired topologists. This paradox was previously exposed in the context of algorithms for the visualization of three-dimensional magnetic fields. For this reason, the paper concludes by developing connections between mathematics and cognitive science in this specific context.

42Nonlinear Force-free And Potential Field Models Of Active-region And Global Coronal Fields During The Whole Heliospheric Interval

By

Between 2008/3/24 and 2008/4/2, the three active regions NOAA active regions 10987, 10988 and 10989 were observed daily by the Synoptic Optical Long-term Investigations of the Sun (SOLIS) Vector Spectro-Magnetograph (VSM) while they traversed the solar disk. We use these measurements and the nonlinear force-free magnetic field code XTRAPOL to reconstruct the coronal magnetic field for each active region and compare model field lines with images from the Solar Terrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO) and Hinode X-ray Telescope (XRT) telescopes. Synoptic maps made from continuous, round-the-clock Global Oscillations Network Group (GONG) magnetograms provide information on the global photospheric field and potential-field source-surface models based on these maps describe the global coronal field during the Whole Heliospheric Interval (WHI) and its neighboring rotations. Features of the modeled global field, such as the coronal holes and streamer belt locations, are discussed in comparison with extreme ultra-violet and coronagraph observations from STEREO. The global field is found to be far from a minimum, dipolar state. From the nonlinear models we compute physical quantities for the active regions such as the photospheric magnetic and electric current fluxes, the free magnetic energy and the relative helicity for each region each day where observations permit. The interconnectivity of the three regions is addressed in the context of the potential-field source-surface model. Using local and global quantities derived from the models, we briefly discuss the different observed activity levels of the regions.

43Quantum Electrodynamics And Experiment Demonstrate The Non-retarded Nature Of Electrodynamical Force Fields

By

In quantum electrodynamics, the quantitatively most successful theory in the history of science, intercharge forces obeying the inverse square law are due to the exchange of space-like virtual photons. The fundamental quantum process underlying applications as diverse as the gyromagnetic ratio of the electron and electrical machinery is then M{\o}ller scattering $ee \to ee$. Analysis of the quantum amplitude for this process shows that the corresponding intercharge force acts instantaneously. This prediction has been verified in a recent experiment.

44The Dependence Of The Helicity Bound Of Force-free Magnetic Fields On Boundary Conditions

By

This paper follows up on a previous study showing that in an open atmosphere such as the solar corona the total magnetic helicity of a force-free field must be bounded and the accumulation of magnetic helicity in excess of its upper bound would initiate a non-equilibrium situation resulting in an expulsion such as a coronal mass ejection (CME). In the current paper, we investigate the dependence of the helicity bound on the boundary condition for several families of nonlinear force-free fields. Our calculation shows that the magnitude of the helicity upper bound of force-free fields is non-trivially dependent on the boundary condition. Fields with a multipolar boundary condition can have a helicity upper bound ten times smaller than those with a dipolar boundary condition when helicity values are normalized by the square of their respective surface poloidal fluxes. This suggests that a coronal magnetic field may erupt into a CME when the applicable helicity bound falls below the already accumulated helicity as the result of a slowly changing boundary condition. Our calculation also shows that a monotonic accumulation of magnetic helicity can lead to the formation of a magnetic flux rope applicable to kink instability. This suggests that CME initiations by exceeding helicity bound and by kink instability can both be the consequences of helicity accumulation in the corona. Our study gives insights into the observed associations of CMEs with the magnetic features at their solar surface origins.

45Cosmic Ray Acceleration By E-Parallel Reconnection Of Force-Free Fields

By

We propose that nearly every accelerated CR was part of the parallel current that maintains all force-free (f-f) magnetic fields. Charged particles are accelerated by the E-parallel (to the magnetic filed B) produced by reconnection. The inferred total energy in extra-galactic cosmic rays is 10^(60) ergs per galaxy spacing volume, provided that acceleration mechanisms assumed do not preferentially only accelerate ultra high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). This total energy is about 10^5 times the parent galactic CR or magnetic energy. The formation energy of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at galaxy centers, 10^(62) ergs, becomes the only feasible source. An efficient dynamo process converts gravitational free energy into magnetic energy in an accretion disk around a SMBH. Aided by Keplerian winding, this dynamo converts a poloidal seed field into f-f fields, which are transported into the general inter-galactic medium (IGM). This magnetic energy is also efficiently converted into particle energies, as evidenced by the radiation from energetic particles. CRs of the IGM are then the result of the continuing dissipation, in a Hubble time, of this magnetic energy, by acceleration within the f-f fields confined within the super-galactic walls and filaments of large scale structures. In addition, most UHECRs are diffusively lost to the galactic voids before the GZK attenuation time, 10^8 years and hence are lost from view. Similarly within the galaxy we expect that the winding by accretion are the sources of galactic CR acceleration. [edited]

46Quantum Emulation Of Molecular Force Fields: A Blueprint For A Superconducting Architecture

By

In this work, we propose a flexible architecture of microwave resonators with tuneable couplings to perform quantum simulations of molecular chemistry problems. The architecture builds on the experience of the D-Wave design, working with nearly harmonic circuits instead of with qubits. This architecture, or modifications of it, can be used to emulate molecular processes such as vibronic transitions. Furthermore, we discuss several aspects of these emulations, such as dynamical ranges of the physical parameters, quenching times necessary for diabaticity and finally the possibility of implementing anharmonic corrections to the force fields by exploiting certain nonlinear features of superconducting devices.

47On The Force Fields Which Are Homogeneous Of Degree $-3$

By

The dynamics defined by a force field which is positively homogeneous of degree $-3$ can always be reduced, by simply constraining it. The dimension of the phase space is reduced by two dimensions, while it may only be reduced by one dimension if the degree of homogeneity is different from $-3$. This remark is an elegant foundation of Appell's projective dynamics. We show how it relates to Kn\"orrer's remark on the correspondence between the Neumann potential on a sphere and the geodesic motion on an ellipsoid.

48The Force Density And The Kinetic Energy-momentum Tensor Of Electromagnetic Fields In Matter

By

We determine the invariant expression of the force density that the electromagnetic field exerts on dipolar matter and construct the non-symmetric energy-momentum tensor of the electromagnetic field in matter which is consistent with that force and with Maxwell equations. We recover Minkowski's expression for the momentum density. We use our results to discuss momentum exchange of an electromagnetic wave-packet which falls into a dielectric block. In particular we show that the wave-packet pulls the block when it enters and drags it when it leaves. The usual form of the center of mass motion theorem does not hold for this system but a modified version of the theorem which includes a spin contribution is shown to be satisfied.

49General Relativistic Effects Of Strong Magnetic Fields On The Gravitational Force: A Driving Engine For Bursts Of Gamma Rays In SGRs?

By

In general relativity all forms of energy contribute to gravity and not only just ordinary matter as in Newtonian Physics. This fact can be seen in the modified hydrostatic equilibrium equation for relativistic stars pervaded by magnetic (B) fields. It has an additional term coupled to the matter part as well as an anisotropic term which is purely of magnetic origin. That additional term coming from the pressure changed by the radial component of the diagonal electromagnetic field tensor, weakens the gravitational force when B is strong enough and can even produce an unexpected change in the attractive nature of the force by reversing its sign. In an extreme case, this new general relativistic (GR) effect can even trigger an instability in the star as a consequence of the sudden reversal of the hydrostatic pressure gradient. We suggest here that this GR effect may be the possible central engine driving the transient giant outbursts observed in Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters (SGRs). In small regions of the neutron star (NS), strong magnetic condensation can take place. Beyond a critical limit, these highly magnetised bubbles may explode releasing the trapped energy as a burst of gamma-rays of ~ 10^{36-40} erg.

50Vibrational Spectra Of The Azabenzenes Revisited: Anharmonic Force Fields

By

Anharmonic force fields and vibrational spectra of the azabenzene series (pyridine, pyridazine, pyrimidine, pyrazine, s-triazine, 1,2,3-triazine, 1,2,4-triazine and s-tetrazine) and benzene are obtained using density functional theory (DFT) with the B97-1 exchange-correlation functional and a triple-zeta plus double polarization (TZ2P) basis set. Overall, the fundamental frequencies computed by second-order rovibrational perturbation theory are in excellent agreement with experiment.
