It is common wisdom that practice makes perfect. And, in fact, in previous studies we find evidence that when given a choice between practicing a task and reflecting on previously accumulated practice, most people opt for the former. What we have argued in prior work, however, is that this preference is misinformed. Results from a series of experiments conducted across different environments, geographies, and populations show that the marginal benefit of accumulating additional experience through practice is inferior to the marginal benefit of reflection, i.e., the articulation and codification of previously accumulated experience. We designed this study to understand whether the performance benefits of reflection vs. practice depend on how much individuals reflect, that is whether the returns to reflection change over time. To this end, we will select participants who are not familiar with the experimental task and we will then manipulate their familiarity with the task at hand within subjects by making the same participants engage in up to three rounds of practice, each followed by reflection or further practice. We will then observe performance differentials. More formally, the study is a 3 (learning: articulation vs. articulation+codification vs. practice) X 3 (familiarity: from 1 to 3 rounds of practice, each followed by the learning manipulation) mixed factorial design – learning is manipulated between subjects, while familiarity is manipulated within subjects.
