The major themes in the novel are refugees, migration and terrorism. The advantages of refugees include economic growth, new ideas and artistic imandpact, but it also brings social, economical, political problems. Assistant Professor of English at Connecticut College, Marie Ostby sits down with the author to discuss the book and its story of Saeed and Nadia, two young people who flee a country on the brink of civil war traveling through Europe and settling in North America. This paper explores Mohsin Hamid’s literary representation of dehumanization of refugees in the age of globalization, the exploitation of humans and their land, as well as the impact of migration on the lives of the migrants in his novel Exit West. The research uses the theoretical framework of postcolonial ecocriticism by Huggan and Tiffin to critically analyze the primary text. This research employs qualitative method to draw parallels between the exploitation of humans and their environment in Hamid’s novel while exploring the dehumanized treatment of refugees, reasons of migration, and the role of war, science and technology in the destruction of environment in this particular narrative. Textual analysis, more specifically, content analysis is used as a method to link the global humanitarian and environmental crisis in the primary text under the Postcolonial Eco-critical ideology.

This study examines Mohsin Hamid’s novel Exit West (2017), from the perspective of social penetration theory. The prime focus is Saeed and Nadia's relationship, they grow closer in the beginning of their relationship by sharing personal thoughts, experiences, comfort, and security, but once they start migrating through the magical doors, their relationship disrupts and weakens, which underline their emotional transition with physical movements, as they confront external upheavals and internal vulnerabilities, ultimately lead to the social depenetration. Using the lens of Social Penetration Theory given by Irwin Altman and Dalmas Taylor in 1973, which is based on the notion that every relationship develops through the gradual process of reciprocal self-disclosure and moves into a deeper level of intimacy by covering the different stages to reach intimacy. Moreover, the study examines how the novel offers a unique application of the given theory by shedding light on the challenging environment for maintaining intimacy in a fragmented world. The study follows a qualitative method with a descriptive and interpretive approach with thematic encoding. The findings of this study will help future researchers to expand the scope of this theory in a broader context.

Literature being a reflection and a product of its surrounding material conditions is also continuously depicting, analysing, comprehending and engaging with the phenomenon of migration. The presentpaper also aims at exploring the nature of the conflict of native-migrant, and possible alternatives to resolve this conflict as depicted in Mohsin Hamid’s Exit West (2017).The text deals with the life of a young couple living in an unnamed city of an Asian country facing civil war. Thetext outlines their migrations due to the outbreak of war in their city.They in search of stable living conditions move from one to another place throughout the world, including Mykoons, London and San Francisco and the US. The text depicts their experiences as migrants in these places.An attempt will be made to analyse the phenomenon of Migration and experiences of Migrants. The study will further explore the narrative of the text to understand the dynamic positions of the characters in a binary framework of native and migrant. The study will extrapolate how the status of being migrantprioritize the ideas of survival.The study will further unravelthe struggles and efforts of the displaced human beings to reshape, reorganize their lives in new paradigms, and how displacement is not only limited to physical space but also affects the mental and social spaces. The paper will further investigate the role of harmonious living in the times of such mass level migrations.
