2DTIC ADA359549: Applications Of Power Series Solutions Of Membrane Equilibrium Equations To The Optical Evaluation Of Membrane Mirrors With Curvature

By

Power series solutions of the Hencky-Campbell equilibrium equations for an initially planar circular membrane in a state of uniform pre-strain are used to analyze the performance of an in-house laboratory membrane mirror curved by a uniform vacuum pressure applied to one side. The results provide theoretical verification of the improvement in surface figure achievable by controlling the amount of pre-strain. In particular, a pre-strain of only 0.25%, corresponding to a uniform radial displacement of the edge of an 11-inch diameter membrane mirror by about 0.014 inches, is predicted to achieve nearly 95% reduction in the maximum deviation of an f/8 membrane from a reference sphere. These results are in good agreement with laboratory measurements of spherical aberration using a Hartmann wavefront sensor. The model was also used in an extensive investigation of the effects of control parameters (pressure and pre-strain) on the improvement of surface figure for lower f-number systems. The results indicate that comparable improvement in systems of f-number less than f/6 would require membrane materials capable of withstanding pre-strains on the order of 2.0% or greater.

4DTIC ADA446935: Evaluation And Analysis Of Node Localization Power Cost In Ad-hoc Wireless Sensor Networks With Mobility

By

One of the key concerns with location-aware Ad-hoc Wireless Sensor Networks (AWSNs) is how sensor nodes determine their position. The inherent power limitations of an AWSN along with the requirement for long network lifetimes makes achieving fast and power-efficient localization vital. This research examines the cost (in terms of power) of network irregularities on communications and localization in an AWSN. The number of data bits transmitted and received are significantly affected by varying levels of mobility, node degree, and network shape. The concurrent localization approach, used by the APS-Euclidean algorithm, has significantly more accurate position estimates with a higher percentage of nodes localized, while requiring 50% less data communications overhead, than the Map-Growing algorithm. Analytical power models capable of estimating the power required to localize are derived. The average amount of data communications required by either of these algorithms in a highly mobile network with a relatively high degree consumes less than 2.0% of the power capacity of an average 560mA-hr battery. This is less than expected and contrary to the common perception that localization algorithms consume a significant amount of a node's power.

5Power Loss Evaluation Method For Modular Multi-Level Converter With High-Frequency

By

There is no common accepted way for calculating the valve power loss of modular multilevel converter (MMC). Valve power loss estimation based on analytical calculation is inaccurate to address the switching power loss and valve power loss estimation based on detailed electro-magnetic simulation is of low speed. To solve this problem, a method of valve power loss estimation based on the detailed equivalent simulation model of MMC is proposed. Results of valve power loss analysis of 201-level 500MW MMC operating at 50Hz~1000Hz are presented. It is seen that the valve power loss of a MMC increased by 12, 40 and 93 % under 200Hz, 500Hz and 1000Hz operating frequency. The article concludes that in a device with isolated inner AC system, MMC operating at higher frequency will be more competitive than typical 50Hz/60Hz MMC with moderate increase of operating power loss and significant reduction of the size of the AC components. 11Evaluation Of Flexibility Assessment Indices Upon Flexible Loading Of Thermal Power Plants With High Penetration Of Renewables

By

In this paper, power system flexibility assessment indices evaluation has been carried out with high penetration of renewables in MATLAB environment, inspired from IRENA FlexTool. The parameters such as magnitude of energy mix, resources available, electricity tariffs and price affordability play a vital role in the proposed research. The developed program has been tested against IEEE 9 bus and IEEE 39 bus systems with and without time-series data and with and without high penetration of renewables. By closely matching the results for various test cases and time series evaluations for IEEE 9 and IEEE 39 bus systems, the developed program has been benchmarked with the IRENA FlexTool and the comparisons have been charted out.

12DTIC AD0877278: Survey And Evaluation Of Electrical Power Sources As To Their Potential Application With The 500-Pound Controlled Airdrop Cargo System

By

The 500-pound CACS is an electronically guided, gliding cargo airdrop system that can deliver critical materials and supplies to troops in remote or hostile areas at any time of day or night under a wide range of weather and terrain conditions. Because the drop aircraft does not have to fly directly over the target area, the aircrew conducting the drop is assured greater safety because the delivery aircraft can remain out of danger zones while making the drop. The CACS is currently in the Engineering Test phase. The system consists of a parawing glider, a control unit that receives signals from a transmitter and steers the glider, the payload, and the transmitter on which the glider homes. The system is capable of automatically delivering 300 to 600 pounds of cargo to within 200 feet of a ground radio transmitter from altitudes of 500 to 25,000 feet. The airborne portion, consisting of the parawing and the control unit, weighs approximately 80 pounds (excluding payload) and can be dropped from any cargo-carrying aircraft. The payload hits the ground with approximately the same impact as a parachute-dropped load, approximately 20 fps in vertical descent. Its horizontal velocity approaches 50 fps.

14NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19770017648: Experimental Evaluation Of A Breadboard Heat And Product-water Removal System For A Space-power Fuel Cell Designed With Static Water Removal And Evaporative Cooling

By

A test program was conducted to evaluate the design of a heat and product-water removal system to be used with fuel cell having static water removal and evaporative cooling. The program, which was conducted on a breadboard version of the system, provided a general assessment of the design in terms of operational integrity and transient stability. This assessment showed that, on the whole, the concept appears to be inherently sound but that in refining this design, several facets will require additional study. These involve interactions between pressure regulators in the pumping loop that occur when they are not correctly matched and the question of whether an ejector is necessary in the system.

15Design, Construction And Evaluation Of A Silage Corn Chopper Equipped With Electromotor Power Unit

Introduction In most small and medium-size traditional animal farms, silage corn is chopped manually. In order to prepare appropriate chopper for small animal production firms, a small electrical powered chopper was designed and developed. Materials and Methods The machine consisted of different parts, including chassis, driveline, power transmission, feeding and cutting unit. To provide the power for cutting cylinder and feeding rollers, 3.7 kW and 1.5 kW electro-motors were selected and used, respectively. Power was transferred from electro-motors to the cutting cylinder and feeding rollers by pulley and belts. Feeding entrance area was 62.5 cm 2 with theoretical capacity of 1.13 kgs -1 and feeding unit power consumption of 0.97 kW. The main parts of feeding and cutting units were analyzed by ANSYS Software. Silage corn was provided at harvest time from the Dashte-Naz, Sari province, and transported to laboratory, immediately. The effect of cutting blades speed (400, 550 and 700 RPM) and feed rollers speed (350, 400 and 450 RPM) on the chopper performance (cutting and feeding energy consumption, chopped corn length and machine capacity) were investigated. The results then analyzed using completely randomized design in triplicates. Results and Discussion Analysis of variance showed that the speed of cutting blades, speed of feeding rollers and their interactions had significant effect on the energy consumption of cutting blades and machine capacity. The effect of speed of feeding rollers was significant on the energy consumption of feeding rollers at 1% level of significance. Also, The effect of speed of chopping blades, speed of feeding rollers and their interactions were significant on the length of chopped corn. Machine capacity increased by increasing in speed of chopping blades from 400 to 550 RPM and decreased by increasing from 550 to 700 RPM. Increasing in the speed of the blades at the moment of impact, caused to effectively cut the stem fibers before being compressed or bent. Increasing the speed beyond 550 RPM provided insufficient time for stem movement toward the blades and therefore, machine capacity decreased. By increasing the speed of feeding rollers, the consumed energy by cutting blades decreased and the energy consumption of feeding rollers, the length of chopped corn and the machine capacity increased. Since the machine capacity is depending on time, increasing in feeding rollers speed, decreased the time for chopping the feed stems resulted decreasing in machine capacity. Also, results depicted that the interaction between speed of cutting blades and feeding rollers had meaningful effect on the consumed energy by cutting blades. The maximum energy consumption was at the blade speed of 700 RPM and the feeding rollers speed of 350 RPM, and the minimum energy consumption was at the blade speed of 400 RPM and feeding rollers speed of 450 RPM. The maximum and minimum length of chopped corns was obtained at the blade speed of 400 RPM and 700 RPM, respectively and correspondingly at the rollers speed of 450 RPM and 350 RPM, respectively. The maximum capacity of the machine was obtained at the blade speed of 550 RPM and rollers speed of 450 RPM. Conclusion Since the length of the chopped corn for animal feeding is 20-30 mm, the optimum speed of cutting blades, minimum energy consumption and maximum machine capacity was obtained as 550 RPM and the optimum speed of feeding rollers was at 400 RPM. For feeding high yielding dairy cows, goats and sheeps that need smaller sized forage, it recommended that feeding rollers speed to be adjusted at 350 RPM. At the same speed, the mean length of chopped corn was 8-19 mm.

16DTIC ADA114997: An Evaluation Of Occupational Exposure To Hydrazine (H-70) During Routine Maintenance Tasks Associated With The F-16 Emergency Power Unit.

By

During the week of 23 to 27 January 1978 , a survey team from the USAF Occupational and Environmental Health Laboratory conducted an analysis of maintenance tasks associated with the F-16 Emergency Power Unit (EPU). This analysis involved definition of tasks for both aircraft and hydrazine fill stand activities and included the collection of personal and short period air samples to define airborne exposure to hydrazine during these tasks. The tasks which were identified include: nitrogen depressurization, catalyst purge, poppet valve replacement and the entire refilling procedure. Measurements indicate compliance with a Time Weighted Average value of 0.1 ppm hydrazine, however, potential peak exposures which range as high as 5 to 8 ppm do occur during some tasks. A technician would be unaware of many such exposures since concentrations below the odor threshold of 3 to 5 ppm give no warning but are at least an order of magnitude above acceptable occupational exposure limits. Recommendations are provided for the elimination of these sources of potential peak exposure and for the use of personal protective equipment during specific tasks. (Author)

19Power Loss Evaluation Method For Modular Multi-Level Converter With High-Frequency

21An Explicit Approach For Dynamic Power Evaluation For Deep Submicron Global Interconnects With Current Mode Signaling Technique

As the VLSI process technology is shrinking to the nanometer regime, power consumption of on-chip VLSI interconnects has become a crucial and an important issue. There are several methodologies proposed to estimate the on- chip power consumption using Voltage Mode Signaling technique (VMS). But the major drawback of VMS is that it increases the power consumption of on-chip interconnects compared to current mode signaling (CMS). A closed form formula is, thus, necessary for current mode signaling to accurately estimate the power dissipation in the distributed line. In this paper, we derived an explicit dynamic power formula in S-domain based on Modified Nodal Analysis (MNA) formulation. The usefulness of our approach is that dynamic power consumption of an interconnect line can be estimated accurately and efficiently at any operating frequency. By substituting s=0 in the vector of node voltages in our model results similar solution as that of Bashirullah et. al. Comparison of simulation results with other established models justifies the accuracy of our approach.

23Design, Simulation, And Performance Evaluation Of 2.4 GHz Microstrip Patch Antenna Arrays With Power Divider For UAV And Drone Applications

By

Single element microstrip patch antennas face significant challenges, including low gain and narrow bandwidth, which restrict their broader applications. This paper focuses on the design and simulation of rectangular microstrip patch antenna RMPA arrays to enhance gain performance compared to a single element RMPA for Drone and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle UAV applications. The process is done with the help of Computer Simulation Technology CST microwave studio. The resonant frequency, substrate material, and substrate height were first specified, followed by the design of a single element RMPA as the initial step in the design process. The single element was excited by the quarter wave feed line method for good impedance matching network. The two element and four element RMPA arrays were designed using the single element RMPA as the fundamental building block. The performance of the designed and simulated antennas were evaluated and compared in terms of gain, return loss and radiated power. The results revealed that, the gain increased from 7.61 dB single element to 9.64 dB 2×1 array to 10.7 dB 4×1 array . Compared to the single element RMPA the return loss of 23.61 dB, the 2×1 and 4×1 RMPA arrays achieved a return loss of 26.78 dB and 30.97 dB respectively. The radiated power analysis revealed that the 4×1 array achieved the highest transmission efficiency at 99.92 , surpassing the single element 97.78 and the 2×1 array 99.48 . The 4×1 array is the best performing configuration, with optimal impedance matching. This study confirms that increasing the number of elements enhances gain and directivity, leading to better radiation focus and power efficiency. Aremu, O. A. | Ajao, O. S. | Makinde, O. 24Economic Evaluation Of Solar-hydrogen Hybrid System With Installed Power Of 1 Mw And 5 Mw In İskenderun Organized Industrial Region

By

ABSTRACT In the study, the production potential of hydrogen production for Iskenderun organized industrial zone was evaluated. Considering the geographical characteristics of the region, the potential of 30000 hours of electricity and hydrogen production per year for solar power plants that have been established or are likely to be established is examined. In the study, 4 different scenarios were selected and economic analysis was carried out. In Scenarios 1 and 2, the cost of H2 (Hydrogen) was calculated by integrating a 120 kW AEM(Anion electrolyte membrane) electrolyzer in addition to the 1 MW solar power plant and storing the produced hydrogen in Type 1 (low pressure, metal material tank) and Type 4 (high pressure composite material tank) tanks. In Scenarios 3 and 4, a 1MW AEM electrolyzer is used with the solar power plant increased to 5 MW. In these scenarios, the hydrogen produced is stored in Type 1 and Type 4 tanks and the H2 cost for transportation to the end user is calculated. In addition, in 4 scenarios, different evaluations were made considering the situation with and without the solar power plant included in the system. The production cost of H2 gas reaching the end user is more economical in the system including the solar power plant. For example, when Scenario 2 is considered, while the production cost of H2 gas is $16.22/kg in the system without solar power plant, this value is calculated as $10.69/kg in the hybrid system where solar power plant is included. In the 4 scenarios where solar-hydrogen hybrid system was created, the production cost of H2 gas was determined as 58.87 $/kg, 10.69 $/kg, 6.65 $/kg and 4.87 $/kg, respectively.

9Little Tea Book

By

Book's cover

After all, tea is the drink! Domestically and socially it is the beverage of the world. There may be those who will come forward with their figures to prove that other fruits of the soil—agriculturally and commercially—are more important. Perhaps they are right when quoting statistics. But what other product can compare with tea in the high regard in which it has always been held by writers whose standing in literature, and recognized good taste in other walks, cannot be questioned? (From the Preface)

A Little Tea Book is a clever book about all things tea- Eastern and Western tea history, stories, culture, quotes, and even poetry. A good little read for tea lovers everywhere. (Summary by Mary Kay)

10Elements of Botany

By

Book's cover

The book is intended to ground beginners in Structural Botany and the principles of vegetable life, mainly as concerns Flowering or Phanerogamous plants, with which botanical instruction should always begin; also to be a companion and interpreter to the Manuals and Floras by which the student threads his flowery way to a clear knowledge of the surrounding vegetable creation. Such a book, like a grammar, must needs abound in technical words, which thus arrayed may seem formidable; nevertheless, if rightly apprehended, this treatise should teach that the study of botany is not the learning of names and terms, but the acquisition of knowledge and ideas. No effort should be made to commit technical terms to memory. Any term used in describing a plant or explaining its structure can be looked up when it is wanted, and that should suffice. On the other hand, plans of structure, types, adaptations, and modifications, once understood, are not readily forgotten; and they give meaning and interest to the technical terms used in explaining them. - Summary by Asa Gray

11Natural Science and Religion

By

Asa Gray was a highly-regarded botanist at Harvard University and a friend and collaborator of Charles Darwin. As a Christian, Gray was concerned with the disconnect developing through the nineteenth century between the growing understanding of the natural world and the traditional worldview assumed by orthodox Christianity. This book presents two lectures he gave to theology students at Yale College in which he argues that a disconnect is not inevitable, but that a Christian perspective can and should incorporate current understanding of the world provided by natural science. - Summary by BarryGanong

13Wild and romantic: Early guides to the English lake district

By

A collection of some of the most significant literary work on the English Lake District prior to Thomas West’s A guide to the Lakes (1778). The poet Thomas Gray takes the reader from Brough south to Kendal on his return from a tour in Scotland. An agricultural reformer, Arthur Young, also returning from Scotland, begins his journey in the northern parts of Cumberland with dry descriptions of local farming, but on arriving in Keswick, his account turns to the picturesque scenery around Derwent Water, Ullswater and Windermere. ‘Wild and romantic’ is Young’s phrase, yet the agriculturalist in him comes to the fore as he declares the enclosed landscapes around Kendal and Windermere to be the most picturesque of all. Thomas Pennant’s account of his journey through the district is cursory, and he seems not have noticed the lakes or mountains at all. West’s Guide quotes Gray, Young and Pennant, and its second edition included the full text of Gray’s unpublished letters as an addendum. It also included four short pieces. John Brown’s letter to his former pupil William Gilpin (who would become the foremost exponent of the ‘picturesque’) connects the scenery of the Lakes to European landscape painting. Experimental philosopher Adam Walker provides a note on a local curiosity, the underground passages of Dunald Mill Hole. John Dalton and Richard Cumberland were among the first in a long line of Lakeland poets to be inspired to verse.> - Summary by Phil Benson
