This publication presents a science activity and instructional information on mechanics of granular materials, interparticle friction and geometric interlocking between particles which is a fundamental concept in many fields like earthquakes. The activity described in this document focuses on the principal strength of granular materials, specifically the liquefaction phenomena, which increases the risk factors in an earthquake. This phenomena is tested with the Mechanics of Granular Materials (MGM) experiment which is conducted under the microgravity of orbit to test sand columns. Concepts are discussed in terms of the National Science Education Standards. A brief glossary of terms and Internet resource list are also included. (YDS)
