This material was developed to provide an application of matrix mathematics in chemistry, and to show the concepts of linear independence and dependence in vector spaces of dimensions greater than three in a concrete setting. The techniques presented are not intended to be considered as replacements for such chemical methods as oxidation-reduction or the balancing of half-reactions. It is noted that it is possible to write down a chemical reaction that does not take place and still balance it by the matrix methods provided.
