On its 80th anniversary in 2021, Nancy Loo (piano), Kitty Cheung (violin), Fung YatShan (clarinet), and Eric Yip (cello) presented the work at HKU in a miracle of timing – it was a day with a black rainstorm and between two typhoons! It refers to a bi-monthly anthology series produced by the company of the same name in which a handful of best-selling books were abridged for the publication. Later, the more well-known magazine Reader’s Digest would feature one abridged book per monthly issue. With no sense of aesthetics or time management, one might need the details now, and nothing else. While it’s debatable whether that’s a rewarding way to go through life, imagine now if one also didn't have the time nor the patience to appreciate classical music. And thus, someone shouted, “just give me the Reader's Digest version!” And Reader’s Digest shouted back, “okay!” In the 80s and 90s, Reader’s Digest would send these short demonstration cassettes to homes as direct-mail advertising for their similarly-abridged music anthologies. Practically everyone had the necessary equipment to play cassettes, and with on-demand video and psychologically-manipulative social media still decades away, it was an effective way to hook prospective buyers. Notable here is the voiceover man: his name is Larry Kenney, but folks under the age of fifty will more likely remember him as the voice of Lion-O from Thundercats . Lion-O informs us that this product contains “only the most memorable music; the melodies that will live forever, ‘till the end of time.” And therein lies the gimmick — we’re going to sell you only the songs you already know. Of course, that wasn’t enough — Reader’s Digest threw in a sweepstakes promising a chance at a $125,000 cash prize, with Kenney promising to tell the listener how to enter if only they listen to the entire tape. (Spoiler alert: the listener has to put a sticker on a piece of paper and mail it back.) To be fair, even my wife (who clearly has a superior intellect, having married this preservationist) hears “Rhapsody in Blue” and says “Hey, that's the United jingle!” So we can make fun of it all we want, but Reader's Digest had a license to print money with musical collections like this. By all means, downplay the composers, the musicians, the music lovers, the students of the classics — there's money to be made selling people just the hits. Of particular note is the desperate disclaimer on this free demonstration cassette that its sound quality doesn't “compare with the rich, full sound of the actual cassettes, records, or CDs.” That being said, this preservationist has certainly heard worse. The humble-yet-professional commercial demonstration recording is certainly a relic of the past — even radio commercials don’t sound quite as smooth or measured these days. Now, the free product demo is a professionally-shot, multi-camera, pushed-saturation, six-figure viral YouTube video with an cartoonishly-diverse cast and super-shallow depth of field and the same damned ukelele-and-whistling and/or U2-soundalike background song as every other video. One has to wonder if we weren't just a little better off when Larry Kenney's silky announcer voice simply but professionally described a product on a short cassette. It was a simpler time, indeed. The Reader’s Digest “Till the End of Time” Demonstration Cassette was a direct-mail advertisement from The Reader’s Digest Association, Inc. sent in approximately 1990, and bears the catalog number DC/R320U. The program is identical on both sides of the cassette, and because of this only one side is presented in the video version; the separate high-resolution audio file on The Internet Archive preserves both sides.
