Encoded Emotion Theory is a novel framework that proposes emotions as the foundational mechanism shaping memory, learning, identity, and consciousness. The theory argues that emotionally charged experiences form and reinforce neural clusters—groups of neurons that fire together and encode both sensory input and emotional value. Over time, these emotionally encoded clusters interact dynamically, giving rise to memory, personality, and moment-to-moment awareness. Unlike traditional models that treat emotion as secondary to cognition, Encoded Emotion Theory positions emotion as the organizing principle of the mind. It offers new insights into how consciousness emerges from emotional variability, with broad applications in neuroscience, therapy, education, and artificial intelligence.

This book analyses right-wing memory politics in Poland through the concept of "cursed soldiers" as a key memory symbol, and how it has been used to construct a narrow and exclusionary vision of Polish identity framed in terms of Catholicism, national culture, and traditional family values. Groundbreaking in its approach and combining top-down study with reception analysis, the book builds on the theory of hegemony, adding emotional dimensions to the understanding of memory politics and nationalism. It provides a detailed case study of Polish memory politics since 2015, when the Law and Justice Party (PiS) came to power, and offers insights into how historical memory is used to mobilise support within nationalist and populist movements. Through a range of data including interviews, participant observation, and analysis of various media, it presents a semiotic and emotional map of how these memory symbols are received and experienced in Polish society. The focus on Podlasie, a region with significant Belarusian population and a history of post-war partisan conflicts, highlights the complex interplay of memory, identity, and politics in contemporary Poland. This work is intended for a broad audience, including undergraduates, postgraduates, scholars, and non-specialist readers such as booksellers or librarians.

Previous research has demonstrated that emotional states or emotional stimuli can influence visual working memory (VWM) performance. However, up to date there is a striking lack of research on whether the VWM task itself induces emotional experiences, and whether they impact VWM performance. In our registered report we argue that the VWM task can be considered an achievement situation, therefore leading to participants naturally experiencing achievement emotions (AE) including joy, pride, anger, and shame. Specifically, we hypothesize (1) that these AE correlate with individual differences in VWM performance, that this link is (2) mediated by subjective task performance (STP; i.e. how well or poorly participants think they are doing) and (3) moderated by performance goal orientation (PGO). Further, we believe (4) that AE, PGO, and task difficulty interact in predicting VWM. N = 225 participants will be recruited to perform the continuous colour wheel task. The task shall be comprised of 240 trials, which include arrays of either four (easy) or eight (difficult) coloured squares. Participants’ AE and STP will be obtained by self-report after the VWM task. We expect that our findings will highlight the relevance of AE as a potentially confounding variable for interpreting an individual’s VWM ability.

Cross-sectional research project exploring the interrelationships between cognitive memory processes (memory bias, intrusions), eco-emotions, and pro-environmental behaviour. A novel memory bias measure is devised, and an intrusive symptom measure from PTSD research is applied to explore whether cognitive processes are implicated in ecological emotions and associations with action. A sample of around 450 American individuals is recruited from Prolific based on representative demographic criteria of age and gender.

Mental imagery refers to the ability to generate visual representations within the ‘mind’s eye’. Whilst people differ in the vividness and detail of their mental imagery some are unable to generate it at all – a condition known as ‘aphantasia’ (Zeman et al., 2015), which affects approximately 4% of the population (Dance et al., 2022). Interestingly, people with aphantasia (aphantasics) perform comparably to those with typical imagery (imagers) on visual working memory and spatial transformation tasks (Dawes et al., 2020; Keogh et al., 2021; Zhao et al., 2022), and they have been found to adopt alternative strategies to complete these tasks (Reeder et al., 2024). Despite compensating in some areas, aphantasics exhibit a reduced ability to recall details of past events and imagine future scenarios (Dawes et al., 2020; Dawes et al., 2022), suggesting a specific deficit in episodic, ‘atemporal’ thinking. One early study, conducted before aphantasia was popularly defined, found evidence that vivid mental imagery may enhance emotional content of autobiographical memories, which was linearly related to the amount of detail recalled (D’Argembeau & Van der Linden, 2006). Emotional autobiographical memories are typically easier to retrieve and harder to forget (Hall et al., 2021; Williams et al., 2022). The same pattern is observed with lab-based stimuli, which are more likely to be recalled if they are highly pleasant or unpleasant (Bradley et al., 1992; Bywaters et al., 2004). This led to the theory that mental imagery serves as an emotional amplifier, and increases the risk of re-experiencing intrusive memories in emotional disorders (Holmes & Mathews, 2010; Holmes et al., 2008). Recently, researchers have found evidence that aphantasics show a reduced ability to identify and label their own emotions (Monzel et al., 2024). Combined with the known autobiographical memory deficits, it has been proposed that aphantasia may act as a shield against developing disorders characterised by intrusive emotional memories, particularly post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD; Keogh et al., 2023). Despite these links, the impact of aphantasia on emotions and memory remains poorly understood. There have only been two studies (Wicken et al., 2021; Keogh et al., 2023), with modest sample sizes, reliance on hypothetical scenarios (e.g. plane crash), and a focus on a single emotion – fear. The current study will expand this limited knowledge by investigating short- and long-term memory for positive and negative emotional scenarios using a large, online sample of individuals with and without aphantasia. Specifically, emotional stimuli will be either perceived (short videos) or imagined (short stories). Participants will rate each stimulus on valence, arousal, and emotional impact. Additionally, they will be asked to freely recall details from the stimuli in sessions that occur immediately after exposure, and again after one-week and one-year. This design will allow us to assess the role of mental imagery in short- and long-term memory of imagined and perceived emotional content.

The primary aim of this research is to study the impact of situational awe on recognition memory for information presented in Planetarium films and topic interest.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of emotional factors associated with landmarks on the formation of spatial representations that individuals construct and use in their daily lives to orient themselves and move around in their environment. Landmarks are key elements of our environment that we use as reference points and whose importance for spatial navigation and orientation has been attested by numerous works (Michon & Denis, 2001; Tom & Denis, 2004; Nys et al., 2015). To effectively support these activities, they must be salient at several levels: visually (in terms of color, size, shape), structurally (with a key location in the environment) but also semantically, i.e., relevant to the task at hand or for personal or cultural reasons (Caduff & Timpf, 2008). This semantic salience of landmarks can be linked to the emotion they arouse in individuals (Nuhn & Timpf, 2017; Yesiltepe et al., 2021). Based on this observation, a small number of studies have recently shown that emotional visual stimuli used as landmarks can improve navigation, spatial memory, and bias perceived distances (Balaban et al., 2017; Palmiero & Piccardi, 2017; Piccardi et al., 2020; Ruotolo et al., 2019, 2020, 2021; Redhead et al., 2023). However, it is still unclear if these effects are due to a memory modulation mechanism triggered by a particular emotion experienced while nearby a particular landmark or to the emotional value attributed to the landmark itself. Thus the purpose of this study is to clarify the role of emotions, conveyed through descriptions, on spatial memory. Specifically we aim to compare the use of positive events and neutral events that occur at landmarks locations during navigation, as well as the use of positive descriptions of landmarks versus neutral descriptions of these. In the present study, participants watch a video of a route in a virtual urban environment containing 12 landmarks located at different intersections. Each landmark is associated with a text description. Depending on the experimental condition this descriptions contain either information about an event happening at the landmark location or information about the landmark itself and are either positive or neutral. After viewing the video participants’ spatial memory is assessed using several spatial tasks: A free recall of the landmarks encountered during the route, a recall of the direction taken during the route, a distance estimation of the route and a positioning of the landmarks on a map.
