Sympathy and Confidence are new fault remediation systems that improve the quality and quantity of data recovered from embedded networked sensing (ENS) systems. Unreliable collection systems result in missing data points, and faulty or confusing sensor data further reduce the quantity of usable data recovered from a deployment. Unfortunately faults in ENS systems occur at a higher rate, and are harder to find and fix, compared with conventional systems. I will talk about two methodologies that we have developed to find and fix faults in ENS deployments. Sympathy uses a high-level decision tree to analyze a small set of carefully chosen metrics and to suggest actions users can take to fix data-flow disruptions in the network. Sympathy has been effective for managing network health in numerous real-world deployments since 2006, but its static algorithms proved insufficient for data faults. Our second system, Confidence, combines the successes of Sympathy with dynamic algorithms that more readily adapt to detecting data faults in new and unexpected environments. Confidence builds on three key ideas: 1) A flexible, multidimensional feature space that tends to group nodes and sensors that have similar fault states; 2) a transparent system design that both aids and profits from the user's intuition; and 3) efficient incorporation of user feedback into fault detection and diagnosis algorithms. User feedback, in particular, makes Confidence quickly adapt to new deployment scenarios and previously unobserved types of faults. We have successfully deployed both Sympathy and Confidence alongside many ENS deployments in California and Bangladesh, including a long-term deployment at James Reserve of 130 sensors. ©2008 Microsoft Corporation. In this cross-cultural comparison study, three cohorts of children aged 2 to 4 years (two cohorts from China and one cohort from the Netherlands) were tested on their exploration of novel objects and their self-regulation and executive functions. The goal of this study was three-folded:(1) We aim to abstract and to describe the exploration patterns, or in other words, the dynamic processes that children of 2 to 4 years of age undergo to exhibit original, creative actions within the exploration task (i.e., the Usual Box task, UBT). (2) We aim to investigate whether culture as the context in large exerts influences on children’s exploratory processes and the related creative outcomes. To achieve this aim, a comparison will be conducted on the exploratory behaviors of children from China and the Netherlands, one as a typical Eastern country and the other as a typical Western country. (3) We aim to test the role of children’s self-regulation capacity, as a mediator and/or as a moderator, in connecting culture and creativity.

Such a book, like a grammar, must needs abound in technical words, which thus arrayed may seem formidable; nevertheless, if rightly apprehended, this treatise should teach that the study of botany is not the learning of names and terms, but the acquisition of knowledge and ideas. No effort should be made to commit technical terms to memory. Any term used in describing a plant or explaining its structure can be looked up when it is wanted, and that should suffice. A collection of some of the most significant literary work on the English Lake District prior to Thomas West’s A guide to the Lakes (1778). The poet Thomas Gray takes the reader from Brough south to Kendal on his return from a tour in Scotland. An agricultural reformer, Arthur Young, also returning from Scotland, begins his journey in the northern parts of Cumberland with dry descriptions of local farming, but on arriving in Keswick, his account turns to the picturesque scenery around Derwent Water, Ullswater and Windermere. ‘Wild and romantic’ is Young’s phrase, yet the agriculturalist in him comes to the fore as he declares the enclosed landscapes around Kendal and Windermere to be the most picturesque of all. Thomas Pennant’s account of his journey through the district is cursory, and he seems not have noticed the lakes or mountains at all. West’s Guide quotes Gray, Young and Pennant, and its second edition included the full text of Gray’s unpublished letters as an addendum. It also included four short pieces. John Brown’s letter to his former pupil William Gilpin (who would become the foremost exponent of the ‘picturesque’) connects the scenery of the Lakes to European landscape painting. Experimental philosopher Adam Walker provides a note on a local curiosity, the underground passages of Dunald Mill Hole.
