Embedded systems are often subject to real-time constraints. Such systems require determinism to ensure that task deadlines are met. Schedulability analysis provides a firm basis to ensure that tasks meet their deadlines. Knowledge of bounds on worst-case execution times (WCET) of tasks is a critical piece of information required by schedulability analysis. Static timing analysis derives these bounds on WCETs, but requires that bounds on loop iterations be known statically, i.e., at compile time. This often limits the class of applications that may be analyzed by static timing analysis and, hence, used in a real-time system. Another limiting factor for real-time system design is the class of processors that may be used. Typically, modern, complex, processors may not be used in real-time systems design. Contemporary processors with their advanced architectural features, such as out-of-order execution, branch prediction, speculation, and prefetching, cannot be statically analyzed to obtain WCETs for tasks. The main reason is that these features introduce non-determinism to task execution, which can only be resolved at run-time. The contributions of this work are two-fold. First, we show how the constraint concerning statically bound loops may be relaxed and applied to make dynamic decisions at run-time to obtain power savings. Second, we introduce a new paradigm, which proposes minor enhancements to modern processor architectures, which, on interaction with software modules, is able to obtain tight, accurate timing analysis results for modern processors. To the best of our knowledge, these methods of (a) using run-time information to obtain accurate upper bounds for loops and using that information to achieve energy savings, and (b) hardware/software interactions to calculate WCET results for out-of-order processors, are the first of their kind. ©2008 Microsoft Corporation. Energy consumption is a fundamental barrier in taking full advantage of integration capability of today and future semiconductor manufacturing technology. With technology scaling to nanometer dimensions, leakage (static) power is gaining a bigger share in total power consumption, and furthermore, variation is increasing in transistor parameters (such as gate length, width, and threshold voltage, V th ) such that leakage as well as delay varies even among SRAM cells located within the same die. We present our recent research activities and results on reducing cache leakage energy under real-time constraints in processor-based embedded systems. This includes /(i)/ reducing leakage energy in instruction cache by taking advantage of value-dependence of SRAM leakage due to within-die V th variation, /(ii)/ using asymmetric SRAM designs that leak less when storing a 0, and then renaming register-operands of instructions so as to increase number of zeros in instruction-cache, and hence, to reduce leakage,/ (iii)/ shifting the delay-distribution curve of SRAM cells toward higher delays without impacting delay, capacity, or timing-yield of the entire cache by adding extra cache-ways or by adding spare rows/columns of SRAM. A method for detecting fatigue cracks has been explored at NASA Langley Research Center. Microscopic NiTi shape memory alloy (sensory) particles were embedded in a 7050 aluminum alloy matrix to detect the presence of fatigue cracks. Cracks exhibit an elevated stress field near their tip inducing a martensitic phase transformation in nearby sensory particles. Detectable levels of acoustic energy are emitted upon particle phase transformation such that the existence and location of fatigue cracks can be detected. To test this concept, a fatigue crack was grown in a mode-I single-edge notch fatigue crack growth specimen containing sensory particles. As the crack approached the sensory particles, measurements of particle strain, matrix-particle debonding, and phase transformation behavior of the sensory particles were performed. Full-field deformation measurements were performed using a novel multi-scale optical 3D digital image correlation (DIC) system. This information will be used in a finite element-based study to determine optimal sensory material behavior and density.

We investigated the formation of arc-like structures in the infalling envelope around protostars, motivated by the recent Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the high-density molecular cloud core, MC27/L1521F. We performed self-gravitational hydrodynamical numerical simulations with an adaptive mesh refinement code. A filamentary cloud with a 0.1~pc width fragments into cloud cores because of perturbations due to weak turbulence. The cloud core undergoes gravitational collapse to form multiple protostars, and gravitational torque from the orbiting protostars produces arc structures extending up to a 1000~AU scale. As well as on a spatial extent, the velocity ranges of the arc structures, $\sim0.5\,\mathrm{km\,s}^{-1}$, are in agreement with the ALMA observations. We also found that circumstellar disks are often misaligned in triple system. The misalignment is caused by the tidal interaction between the protostars when they undergo close encounters because of a highly eccentric orbit of the tight binary pair.

Computing embedded contact homology (ECH) and related invariants of certain toric 3-manifolds (in the sense of Lerman) has led to interesting new results in the study of symplectic embeddings. Here, we give a combinatorial formulation of ECH chain complexes for general toric contact 3-manifolds. As a corollary, we prove Conjecture A.3 from [Hutchings14].

After reviewing previous literature, it is evident that there is a vast amount of behavioural research spanning across a wide range of topics. For example, behavioural research has focused on increasing attendance uptake for NHS health checks, making food choices healthier, and preventing unnecessary prescribing of antibiotics (Chardborn, Gold and Amlôt, 2018). However, it remains unclear how health organisations are embedding behavioural research within their organisation. Additionally, many health organisations are producing valuable findings, however these are not being published in peer-reviewed scientific journal articles and therefore are limiting their contribution to the scientific literature on this topic. This scoping review aims to understand the embedded behavioural research conducted by health organisations and explore the methodological approaches employed within this research. Specifically, this review will focus on randomised control trials (RCTs), which are considered the most rigorous design to determine cause-effect relationships and assess the effectiveness of new interventions and their outcomes. RCTs minimise bias by using randomisation to balance participant characteristics between groups, ensuring there are no systematic differences that could influence the outcome. While other study designs can detect associations, they cannot rule out the possibility that these associations are driven by a third factor linked to both intervention and outcome (Hariton & Locascio, 2018; Sibbald & Roland, 1998). Another advantage of using RCTs is that they provide high-quality, well-defined assessment of outcomes. This is because data is collected prospectively and evaluated against pre-specified statistically significant criteria (Gale, Zhang & Lazarus, 2023). Firstly, we will search for peer-reviewed journal articles. Peer-reviewed journals are a way of sharing research findings and adding evidence to the literature. Peer-reviewed journal articles are widely considered the gold standard that are driving scholarly publications (Mayden, 2012). This is because they undergo a rigorous evaluation process before they are published to ensure the quality of manuscripts are of the highest standard. The process intends to be constructive, aiming to increase the likelihood of producing publishable material whilst also learning from reviewers (Ladomery, 2024). The process involves reviewers carefully reading and evaluating several factors within the research, such as the validity of the science, the quality of the experimental design and the appropriateness of methods used (Kelly, Sadeghieh & Adeli, 2014). Given that this review aims to explore methodologies used within RCTs, it deemed appropriate to first focus on peer-reviewed journal articles in order to include the highest quality of research in this area. As briefly mentioned not all health organisations are publishing their research in peer-reviewed journal articles, to ensure this scoping review does not exclude relevant research, we will also review grey literature. Grey literature can include a variety of sources such as reports, fact sheets, websites and policy documents (Godin, Stapleton, Kirkpatrick, Hanning & Leatherdale, 2015), and although not published in commercial publications, grey literature can have important contributions to a review (Paez, 2017). Including grey literature will help ensure this scoping review captures a broader range of evidence. This review focuses on embedded behavioural research. In this context, the term ‘embedded’ refers to studies that have conducted a RCT within a health organisation. To define this, studies must have at least one author from the affiliated health organisation where the RCT is being delivered/tested, or where the results of the RCT are being implemented. This is to ensure the review captures behavioural research that is specifically conducted and embedded in a health organisation.

We employ first-principles calculations to study the mechanical, geometrical, electronic and magnetic properties of Fe atom embedded s-triazine ($\mathrm{Fe}$@${\mathrm C_6}{\mathrm N_6}$) system under the influence of external environment. Our results show that the binding energy of $\mathrm{Fe}$@${\mathrm C_6}{\mathrm N_6}$ can be modulated by an applied tensile deformation and perpendicular electric field. The non-magnetic semiconducting property of pure s-triazine sheet (${\mathrm C_6}{\mathrm N_6}$) is found to change upon embedding of Fe atom in the porous site of the sheet. It is revealed that the $\mathrm{Fe}$@${\mathrm C_6}{\mathrm N_6}$ system exhibits half-metallic electronic character with a magnetic moment in the the order similar to that of an isolated Fe atom. Furthermore, electronic and magnetic properties of the $\mathrm{Fe}$@${\mathrm C_6}{\mathrm N_6}$ systems are preserved up to a maximum value of 10 V/nm in electric field strength and 6\% tensile strain. Interestingly, we find that the half-metallic electronic character of $\mathrm{Fe}$@${\mathrm C_6}{\mathrm N_6}$ system can be tuned into a semiconductor via adsorption of atoms and molecules into the $\mathrm{Fe}$@${\mathrm C_6}{\mathrm N_6}$ system. The magnetic moment of $\mathrm{Fe}$@${\mathrm C_6}{\mathrm N_6}$ with adsorbed atoms/molecules is also modified. Our findings may serve as a guide for future applications of $\mathrm{Fe}$@${\mathrm C_6}{\mathrm N_6}$ structures in spintronics devices.

We present Chandra observations of the massive star-forming region S106, a prominent HII region in Cygnus, associated with an extended molecular cloud and a young cluster. The nebula is excited by a single young massive star located at the center of the molecular cloud and the embedded cluster. The prominence of the cluster in the Chandra observation presented here confirms its youth and allows some of its members to be studied in more detail. We detect X-ray emission from the young massive central source S106 IRS 4, the deeply embedded central object which drives the bipolar nebula with a mass loss rate approximately 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than main sequence stars of comparable luminosity. Still, on the basis of its wind momentum flux the X-ray luminosity of S106 IRS 4 is comparable to the values observed in more evolved (main sequence and giant) massive stars, suggesting that the same process which is responsible for the observed X-ray emission from older massive stars is already at work at these early stages.

This permits unlabeled 3-dimensional histology on archival tissue banks, which is of great value in evaluating prognostic indicators.

The alignment of code in the flash memory of deeply embedded SoCs can have a large impact on the total energy consumption of a computation. We investigate the effect of code alignment in six SoCs and find that a large proportion of this energy (up to 15% of total SoC energy consumption) can be saved by changes to the alignment. A flexible model is created to predict the read-access energy consumption of flash memory on deeply embedded SoCs, where code is executed in place. This model uses the instruction level memory accesses performed by the processor to calculate the flash energy consumption of a sequence of instructions. We derive the model parameters for five SoCs and validate them. The error is as low as 5%, with a 11% average normalized RMS deviation overall. The scope for using this model to optimize code alignment is explored across a range of benchmarks and SoCs. Analysis shows that over 30% of loops can be better aligned. This can significantly reduce energy while increasing code size by less than 4%. We conclude that this effect has potential as an effective optimization, saving significant energy in deeply embedded SoCs.

Deeply embedded systems often have the tightest constraints on energy consumption, requiring that they consume tiny amounts of current and run on batteries for years. However, they typically execute code directly from flash, instead of the more energy efficient RAM. We implement a novel compiler optimization that exploits the relative efficiency of RAM by statically moving carefully selected basic blocks from flash to RAM. Our technique uses integer linear programming, with an energy cost model to select a good set of basic blocks to place into RAM, without impacting stack or data storage. We evaluate our optimization on a common ARM microcontroller and succeed in reducing the average power consumption by up to 41% and reducing energy consumption by up to 22%, while increasing execution time. A case study is presented, where an application executes code then sleeps for a period of time. For this example we show that our optimization could allow the application to run on battery for up to 32% longer. We also show that for this scenario the total application energy can be reduced, even if the optimization increases the execution time of the code.

We describe the scientific motivation, experimental basis, design methodology, and simulated performance of the ExaVolt Antenna (EVA) mission, and planned ultra-high energy (UHE) particle observatory under development for NASA's suborbital super-pressure balloon program in Antarctica. EVA will improve over ANITA's integrated totals - the current state-of-the-art in UHE suborbital payloads - by 1-2 orders of magnitude in a single flight. The design is based on a novel application of toroidal reflector optics which utilizes a super-pressure balloon surface, along with a feed-array mounted on an inner membrane, to create an ultra-large radio antenna system with a synoptic view of the Antarctic ice sheet below it. Radio impulses arise via the Askaryan effect when UHE neutrinos interact within the ice, or via geosynchrotron emission when UHE cosmic rays interact in the atmosphere above the continent. EVA's instantaneous antenna aperture is estimated to be several hundred square meters for detection of these events within a 150-600 MHz band. For standard cosmogenic UHE neutrino models, EVA should detect of order 30 events per flight in the EeV energy regime. For UHE cosmic rays, of order 15,000 geosynchrotron events would be detected in total, several hundred above 10 EeV, and of order 60 above the GZK cutoff energy

We propose a new finite element method for Helmholtz equation in the situation where an acoustically permeable interface is embedded in the computational domain. A variant of Nitsche's method, different from the standard one, weakly enforces the impedance conditions for transmission through the interface. As opposed to a standard finite-element discretization of the problem, our method seamlessly handles a complex-valued impedance function $Z$ that is allowed to vanish. In the case of a vanishing impedance, the proposed method reduces to the classic Nitsche method to weakly enforce continuity over the interface. We show stability of the method, in terms of a discrete G{\aa}rding inequality, for a quite general class of surface impedance functions, provided that possible surface waves are sufficiently resolved by the mesh. Moreover, we prove an a priori error estimate under the assumption that the absolute value of the impedance is bounded away from zero almost everywhere. Numerical experiments illustrate the performance of the method for a number of test cases in 2D and 3D with different interface conditions.

We study the real valued process $ \{X_t, t\in {\mathbb N}\} $ defined by $X_{t+2} = \varphi(X_t,X_{t+1})$, where the $X_t$ are bounded. We aim at proving the decay of correlations for this model, under regularity assumptions on the transformation $\varphi$.

We show that a compact embedded minimal or constant mean curvature annulus with non-vanishing Gaussian curvature which is tangent to two spheres of same radius or tangent to a sphere and meeting a plane in constant contact angle is rotational.

We present the results of simulations of forced turbulence in a slab where the mean kinetic helicity has a maximum near the mid-plane, generating gradients of magnetic helicity of both large and small-scale fields. We also study systems that have poorly conducting buffer zones away from the midplane in order to assess the effects of boundaries. The dynamical alpha quenching phenomenology requires that the magnetic helicity in the small-scale fields approaches a nearly static, gauge independent state. To stress-test this steady state condition we choose a system with a uniform sign of kinetic helicity, so that the total magnetic helicity can reach a steady state value only through fluxes through the boundary, which are themselves suppressed by the velocity boundary conditions. Even with such a set up, the small-scale magnetic helicity is found to reach a steady state. In agreement with earlier work, the magnetic helicity fluxes of small-scale fields are found to be turbulently diffusive. By comparing results with and without halos, we show that artificial constraints on magnetic helicity at the boundary do not have a significant impact on the evolution of the magnetic helicity, except that "softer" (halo) boundary conditions give a lower energy of the saturated mean magnetic field.

This paper investigates the dynamical evolution of embedded stellar clusters from the protocluster stage, through the embedded star-forming phase, and out to ages of 10 Myr -- after the gas has been removed from the cluster. The relevant dynamical properties of young stellar clusters are explored over a wide range of possible star formation environments using N-body simulations. Many realizations of equivalent initial conditions are used to produce robust statistical descriptions of cluster evolution including the cluster bound fraction, radial probability distributions, as well as the distributions of close encounter distances and velocities. These cluster properties are presented as a function of parameters describing the initial configuration of the cluster, including the initial cluster membership N, initial stellar velocities, cluster radii, star formation efficiency, embedding gas dispersal time, and the degree of primordial mass segregation. The results of this parameter space survey, which includes about 25,000 simulations, provide a statistical description of cluster evolution as a function of the initial conditions. We also present a compilation of the FUV radiation fields provided by these same cluster environments. The output distributions from this study can be combined with other calculations, such as disk photoevaporation models and planetary scattering cross sections, to ascertain the effects of the cluster environment on the processes involved in planet formation.

This is the second of a series of two papers where we construct embedded Willmore tori with small area constraint in Riemannian three-manifolds. In both papers the construction relies on a Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction, the difficulty being the M\"obius degeneration of the tori. In the first paper the construction was performed via minimization, here by Morse Theory; to this aim we establish new geometric expansions of the derivative of the Willmore functional on exponentiated small Clifford tori degenerating, under the action of the M\"obius group, to small geodesic spheres with a small handle. By using these sharp asymptotics we give sufficient conditions, in terms of the ambient curvature tensors and Morse inequalities, for having existence/multiplicity of embedded tori stationary for the Willmore functional under the constraint of prescribed (sufficiently small) area.
