The problem of fault diagnosis of large-scale analog circuit is studied. Any fault diagnosis procedure is limited by the number of circuit parameters to be diagnosed. When such limit is exceeded by large-scale circuits, some kind of tearing process has to be implemented before a fault diagnosis procedure can be applied. In this paper, a tearing process via accessibility of subnetworks is presented. The necessary and sufficient condition for accessibility is obtained. The implementation of this tearing process is discussed. The tearing process can be applied to nonlinear circuits. (Author)

Polymorphic electronics is a nascent technological discipline that involves, among other things, designing the same circuit to perform different analog and/or digital functions under different conditions. For example, a circuit can be designed to function as an OR gate or an AND gate, depending on the temperature (see figure). Polymorphic electronics can also be considered a subset of polytronics, which is a broader technological discipline in which optical and possibly other information- processing systems could also be designed to perform multiple functions. Polytronics is an outgrowth of evolvable hardware (EHW). The basic concepts and some specific implementations of EHW were described in a number of previous NASA Tech Briefs articles. To recapitulate: The essence of EHW is to design, construct, and test a sequence of populations of circuits that function as incrementally better solutions of a given design problem through the selective, repetitive connection and/or disconnection of capacitors, transistors, amplifiers, inverters, and/or other circuit building blocks. The evolution is guided by a search-and-optimization algorithm (in particular, a genetic algorithm) that operates in the space of possible circuits to find a circuit that exhibits an acceptably close approximation of the desired functionality. The evolved circuits can be tested by computational simulation (in which case the evolution is said to be extrinsic), tested in real hardware (in which case the evolution is said to be intrinsic), or tested in random sequences of computational simulation and real hardware (in which case the evolution is said to be mixtrinsic).

This document is one in a series of technical reports on the subject of fiber optic systems design. This report covers the electronic circuits and optical components needed to design high-performance laser and LED (light, emitting diode) transmitters for optical communications. Subsequent reports in this series will cover the design of low-noise, high-sensitivity preamplifiers, including related hardware such as AGC (automatic gain control) and FM receivers. Applications involving a bidirectional link and video transmitter and receiver are also described, as well as architectures and concepts for development of complete systems. (Author)

The long-term objective of this research is to develop a practical and reliable Automatic Test Program Generator (ATPG) which will allow us to locate the faulty component(s) of a large analog circuit when it is faulty. The short-term objective is to search for viable and amenable concepts under which long-term objectives can be achieved. During this short period, some significant progress has been made.

A wide variety of simple test calibration circuits are compiled for the engineer and laboratory technician. The majority of circuits were found inexpensive to assemble. Testing electronic devices and components, instrument and system test, calibration and reference circuits, and simple test procedures are presented.

This is a final report on the purchase and installation of a Molecular Beam Epitaxial (MBE) Deposition Machine. Additional funds were provided by the National Science Foundation, by USCD intramural contributions and by the Powell (private) foundation for a total of $471,000. The machine presently in operation is a modified Varian Associates Gen.II Machine without the low energy electron diffraction and without the Auger surface spectrometer.

The objective of this Phase-I study was to demonstrate the feasibility of a suite of industrial CAD tools for the design of high-performance, energy-efficient, asynchronous VLSI circuits based on the Caltech technology. Situs Logic's general strategy in the EDA-tools market is to develop and commercialize a complete suite of CAD tools for the design of asynchronous, QDI, VLSI systems including synthesis, analysis, simulation, verification, at the logical and physical levels. Situs has developed a business model for the commercialization of the CAD tools, and has designed the prototype of the tool suite based on this business model and the Caltech approach. The market for asynchronous tools will not be at first the mainstream market, but rather some 'early adopters' designing low-volume high-profit chips, for instance for defense or space applications. Inside the market segment of asynchronous VLSI tools, the competitive advantage pursued by Situs is differentiation rather than cost leadership, even though the Situs tools will be priced significantly below equivalent tools in the mainstream EDA market. The main technical activities and developments were directed towards the design of a prototype tool-site to test and demonstrate the feasibility of the approach. Although the design flow is not entirely automated yet-some steps still have to be preformed manually the results of the effort are very promising: The circuits synthesized with the prototype tool are easily competitive with the state of the art.

Research is concerned with antitank land mines with fuzing techniques which will: (1) distinguish between tanks and other vehicles or personnel, and (2) initiate the mine when a tank is in the most vulnerable position over the mine. The secon requirement demanded that the fuze count tank bogey wheels by impact and release until the proper number have passed over it, and then fire. The circuit functions in such a way that each bogey wheel impact transfers a quantity of charge till fire voltage is attained. The method of computing the charge accumulated after n transfers is described. It was concluded that an electronic counting circuit can be utilized to initiate any voltage-sensitive device. The circuit can be pre-set to function for any number of events and to deliver any voltage compatible with the system requirement. Of the circuit parameters, the capacitor functions like a ladle to transfer the charge, and hence its capacity determines the number of counts. The other capacitor serves as a ordham U., New York. A technique was developed for fast tuning (one microsecond) a coaxial cavity power amplifier to utilize the several advantages of narrowband power over an octave frequency range at UHF. The method described incorporates PIN diodes and is similar to that previously developed for VHF power output systems. Power output and frequency range objectives were not achieved due to the choice of a conventional pi-network output circuit. An improved output circuit is proposed in order to meet design goals for power output and frequency range. This fast-tuning technique, applied to a multiplexer-power combiner, is suggested as a method of overcoming the three decibels of power loss usually associated with the use of binary wideband hybrid combiners for multi-tone operation.
