This project applies the Cosmic Elastic Theory (CET) to the Pantheon+SH0ES supernova sample in order to investigate elastic deviations in luminosity distance as a function of local density. A practical density estimation protocol was developed using observed magnitudes and redshift-adaptive volumes. The goal is to test whether a continuous elastic response—consistent with causal coupling—can explain deviations from standard cosmological expectations without assuming dark energy. Results show the emergence of a transitional regime between low and high density environments, aligning with the hypothesis that isotropy is an emergent feature of elastic redistribution in spacetime. The dataset, source code, and manuscript are provided as part of this registration.

Paper V: Cosmic Elastic Theory — Emergent Gravity, Maximum Tension, and Ringdown Suppression This study extends the Cosmic Elastic Theory (CET) to gravitational waves, showing that ringdown amplitudes in black hole mergers are suppressed by a maximum elastic tension of spacetime. We demonstrate that signal-to-noise ratios depend not only on intrinsic source properties but also on the density along the line of sight, providing strong empirical support for CET’s core principle: gravity and cosmic acceleration are two manifestations of the same elastic law of spacetime.

Nanowires each consisting of a magnetostrictive Co core and a PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 or BiFeO3 ferroelectric oxide shell exhibit a magnetic field-tunable piezoelectric response and ferroelectric coercivity owing to magneto-elastic coupling through the interfacial core-shell boundary. The observed magneto-elastic tuning of the ferroelectric switching is analyzed using a renormalized Landau-Ginzburg stiffness in which a magnetic field-tunable stress concentration is incorporated. These results provide insight into the design of integrated functional devices and magnetoelectric sensors.

This report describes the progress achieved during the third period of the study of elastic wave reflection from the curved and planar media subject to water loading. During the previous period, extensive experimental investigations were initiated to study parametrically the behavior of acoustic beams at curved and planar fluid-solid interfaces. Three types of materials, representative of Navy applications, in two geometries and two sizes, and many values of incident angle and angular or linear coordinates were included in the effort of last year. Simultaneously, an aggressive program of theoretical modeling and experimental verification were mounted and essentially all of the data were compared to predictions of the model. We found, in most cases, very good agreement between model calculations and experimental data. For the theoretical modeling of these effects, the complex source point (CSP) method was used to produce Gaussian line sources to account for the wave-solid interaction for acoustic beams. The scattering problem solved in this work is couched in terms of spectral integrals that are approximated by high-frequency uniform asymptotics. The resulting expressions for the reflected field contain interacting specularly reflected beam and leaky wave contributions which establish the physical basis for the observed phenomena. In addition to the two- dimensional modeling for comparison to experiments, work began to formulate a 3- D beam model within the theoretical framework for this more complicated circumstance as well. In continuation of the efforts of last year, we have extended the two-dimensional model to three dimensions.

This thesis presents a model which simulates the scattering from a fluid loaded I-beam and the resultant behavior due to fluid-structure interaction. Chapter I gives an overview of the problem and describes the characteristics of the solid and fluid, the aspects of periodicity, boundary conditions and the coupling of the two media. The governing equations of motion are scaled in Chapter II. In Chapter III, the finite difference formulae for these equations are derived, as is the non-local radiation boundary condition. Difference formulas for typical boundary points of the solid and corner nodes are also derived. All finite difference formulae used are presented in Appendix C. Chapter IV contains numerical results. Conclusions are drawn and areas of the problem that would require further study are in Chapter V. The calculation of vibrations, and in particular, resonances from bounded elastic shells can be quite tedious and time consuming when using the exact elastodynamic equations. Thus, a popular approach has been to employ various dynamic assumptions about the motion of the shell surface when subjected to disturbances. This can be done using variational considerations in which energy is minimized when various constraints are imposed. We exploit the technique using various assumptions which give rise to several shell theories. We can use the resulting expressions to calculate resonances over a frequency range and compare then with the exact results. We may then rank the various approximations in order of their agreement to the exact results. Limitations of each of the methods can then be outlined as well as those of shell methods in general.... An elastic design analysis method is presented for small foundations which utilize an energy criteria. It provides a direct approach for calculating allowable loads and for estimating the design efficiency of the resulting structure. The method has the advantage of circumventing the standard method for single degree of freedom systems in first calculating the fixed base frequency, utilizing shock design spectra, and equivalent static load analyses. A sample problem is presented that shows how to establish maximum allowable equipment weight for a shock. The results are worked up in some detail to show the ease of application of this method. This final report outlines research in physical acoustics performed in the Physics Department of John Carroll University during the period 1 December 1974 to 30 November 1983. The overall goals of this research and the various projects conducted are outlined. The latter included studies of fluids in the vicinity of the critical point; studies of thermal phonon propagation in single crystals; acoustic impulse generation, propagation and scattering studies; and basic research and development work on fiber optic acoustic sensor systems. Also included in this report are a list of publications resulting from the contract research and a list of graduate students who participated in the program, including the titles of their theses. The following goals have been accomplished in the course of this research: (1) We have developed an analytic Green's function method for pseudo- spectral numerical simulations of boundary layer and channel flows; (2) The numerical code was used to simulate burst-like events in a laminar boundary layer; (3) We have developed four models of a wall-pressure associated with a turbulent burst; (4) A theoretical investigation was conducted of the process of sound generation. The far field acoustic pressure in the fluid and in the coating due to the inhomeogeneity has been calculated; (5) Diffraction of elastic waves by multiple dipping layers of arbitrary shape for two and three dimensional models in the absence of fluid for incident plane P, SV, SH and Rayleigh waves was investigated; and (6) Diffraction of elastic waves in a multilayered plate with an inclusion of arbitrary shape submerged in fluid is the second class of problems which have been completed.

This paper is concerned with the dynamics of an elastic bar that can undergo reversible stress-induced phase transformations. We consider a Riemann problem in which the initial strains belong to a single metastable phase and prove uniqueness of solution that satisfy a nucleation criterion and a kinetic law at all subsonic and sonic phase boundaries. This paper generalizes the results of (3); the authors of (3) considered a piecewise linear material for which no wave fans exist, shock waves always travel at the acoustic speed and shock waves are dissipation-free. The material model of the present paper does not suffer from these degeneracies.

The ultrasonic harmonic generation technique previously used to measure third-order elastic (TOE) constants of crystals of cubic symmetry has been extended to measurement of crystals of trigonal symmetry. The theory for nonpiezoeletric trigonal crystals of J. Phillip has been combined with the piezoelectric theory of McMahon to determine the effective TOE constants in a piezoelectric solid, and a correction has been made to McMahon's expression.

The results of an approximate nonlinear finite-element analysis of a single lap joint are presented and compared with the results of a linear finite-element analysis, and the geometric nonlinear effects caused by the load-path eccentricity on the adhesive stress distributions are determined. The results from finite-element, Goland-Reissner, and photoelastic analyses show that for a single lap joint the effect of the geometric nonlinear behavior of the joint has a sizable effect on the stresses in the adhesive. The Goland-Reissner analysis is sufficiently accurate in the prediction of stresses along the midsurface of the adhesive bond to be used for qualitative evaluation of the influence of geometric or material parametric variations. Detailed stress distributions in both the adherend and adhesive obtained from the finite-element analysis are presented to provide a basis for comparison with other solution techniques. (MM)

A recently developed theoretical approximation, the Reflected Afterflow Virtual Source (RAVS) model, is applied to the case of a planar shock wave attacking an elastic cylindrical shell. To do this, an equation of motion for a structural surface is presented. Also, equations for the pressure that develops when an acoustic wave interacts with a curved and compliant surface are presented. These equations were derived using the RAVS model. An expression for the velocity of the structural surface is derived from the equation of motion and a numerical method is developed using this expression. This is applied to the case of a planar wave attacking an elastic cylindrical shell. Calculations, using the RAVS model, are shown to be in good agreement with all of the exact calculations that were published by Huang for all locations and times. It is concluded that the RAVS model gives a good approximation for the loading and response of an elastic cylindrical shell attacked by a planar wave. The RAVS model is shown to be even better for a spherical wave attack which is a case of more practical interest.

The main goal of this project is to estimate theoretically the overall or effective constitutive properties of nonlinear composite materials undergoing large deformations. Two types of large deformations are of interest; large elastic deformations, and large viscous deformations. The proposed method is to apply variational principles that are under development to characterize the range of the effective properties given partial statistical information about the microstructure (such as the volume fractions of the phases). For some particular microstructures of interest exact estimates may be given. Significant progress was made over the first year with the development of a new variational principle allowing the estimation of the effective properties of a given nonlinear composite in terms of the effective properties of linear composites (which are assumed to be known). The potential significance of this work derives from its simplicity allowing the application of a large body of prior research on linear composites to nonlinear composites. The method has been applied to the case of large viscous deformations, and some results for particular materials systems have already been reported in the pertinent literature.

A model is presented for approximating load-diffusion from axially loaded fibers embedded in elastic matrices. The fundamental elastostatic solutions used are for a point force and point dilation in either a fully- infinite or semi-infinite space. Tangential tractions across the fiber-matrix interface are included explicitly in the analysis. The model is applied to the three-dimensional analogs of Melan's first problem and Reissner's problem and comparisons are made with exact results in the case of the former to help establish the validity of the model. The ability to analyze load-transfer in fiber-matrix systems which are illustrative of those that exist in fiber- reinforced materials is fundamental to the study of how such materials behave in application. Our ability at present, however, to rigorously solve such problems in the realm of three-dimensional elasticity is limited to a few isolated results involving infinite fibers bounded along their entire length to full- infinite matrices. For many materials the fracture strength and fatigue lifetime is controlled by small cracks that can grow at sizes and applied stress levels which are below those predicted from data for long cracks. The objective of this paper is to describe how elastic-plastic fracture mechanics analysis can be used to interpret small crack behavior. The results of the elastic-plastic analysis indicate that deviations from LEFM begin at about 0.7 of the yield stress and that the trend of the small crack data can be predicted. The results of 3-D elastic-plastic analysis of a surface crack show a unique variation of the crack driving force along the crack front. This information is used to predict crack shapes during cyclic crack growth.

Carbon films of thickness down to 2 nanometers are necessary to achieve a storage density of 100 Gbit/in(exp2) in magnetic hard disks. Reliable methods to measure the properties of these ultrathin films still have to be developed. We show for the first time that combining Surface Brillouin Scattering (SBS) and X-ray reflectivity measurements the elastic constants of such films can be obtained. Tetrahedral amorphous carbon films were deposited on silicon, by an S bend filtered cathodic vacuum arc, which provides a continuous coverage on large areas free of macroparticles. Films of thickness down to 2 nm and density of ^3 g/cm(exp3) were produced and characterized. The dispersion relations of surface acoustic waves are measured by SBS for films of different thickness and for the bare substrate. Waves can be described by a continuum elastic model. Fitting of the dispersion relations, computed for given film properties, to the measured dispersion relations allows the derivation of the elastic constants. For a 8 nm thick film we find a Young's modulus E around 400 GPa, with a shear modulus G lying in the 130-210 GPa interval. For a 4.5 nm thick film, E is around 240 GPa, with 0 lying in the 70 - 130 GPa interval. Results for even thinner films become highly sensitive to the precision of the substrate properties, and indicate that the above values are lower bounds. We thus show that we can grow and characterize nanometer size tetrahedral amorphous carbon films, which maintain their density and mechanical properties down to the nm range.

How self-esteem is related to social environment and the elastic-plastic processing of mindies was studied in students aged 13 to 16 years. A "mindy" is a unit process of the mind constructed through using a mental shape. Subjects were 12 students aged 13, 31 students aged 14, 31 aged 15, and 6 aged 16 at a secondary comprehensive school in Greater Helsinki (Finland). A questionnaire and a test were constructed for the variables. Bell-shaped curves were assumed to exist for the variables. Reliabilities and validities of the measures were assessed after item analysis, and they proved to be rather reasonable. The process analysis included the construction of the empirical images of the variables, which were analyzed by solving simultaneous differential equations. The results indicate that the obtained exponential functions are linearly related. These results warrant conclusions that the social environment constructs positive self-esteem, which promotes the development of complete elastic-plastic processing of mindies. Speed increases during the process and transfer from an unstable equilibrium to stable equilibrium occurs. Some possibilities to promote development are suggested. Age differences in the relationships among self-esteem, the social environment, and mindy processing are discussed. (Contains one figure, three tables, and seven references.) (SLD)

This is a modified design to the https://www.prusaprinters.org/prints/25857-prusa-protective-face-shield-rc2 that allows the user to use anything from rope (up to 0.25" diameter) to elastic bands (up to 1 inch) to cloth/nylon webbing (up to 1 inch) to secure the upper band to the head. With a nationwide elastic shortage it's important that we can circulate designs that don't require a specific material (i.e. button hole elastic). This remix on the design has not be verified by any hospital or medical establishment however it has been working well over the past day of testing it. In the images you can see examples of how you can use how to set up (1) elastic straps or webbing up to 1 inch in width and (2) regular rope (in this case we used a pink parachute cord) up to 0.25" in diameter. Acceleration waves in elastic-plastic materials are studied in some detail on the basis of a nonlinear thermodynamical theory of elastic-plastic continua. Attention is confined mainly to non-conducting media, but the developments are, otherwise, general. Formulae for wave speeds are derived, fronts of plastic loading and elastic unloading are discussed, and higher order discontinuities are shown to have the same characteristic speeds as those of acceleration waves. An example concerning propagation of plastic waves in a medium undergoing uni-axial motion is included.

An approximate method is suggested for solving the two-dimensional problem of the theory of elasticity of an infinite, anisotropic plate with an almost circular opening. The method is based on the introduction of a small parameter characterizing the deviation of the opening from the circular. The problem is reduced to the problem of the equilibrium of an anisotropic plate with a circular opening. Chief attention is given to an opening having four axes of symmetry. Approximate solutions for a plate with such an opening are derived for both the general case of loading and for two particular cases when the plate is orthotropic and is deformed by: (1) tensile stresses and (2) bending moments.
