This recording is part of an on-going collaboration with the Channelsea river by artist duo Blanc Sceol (Stephen Shiell & Hannah White), through their varied work with moorings and conservation cooperative, Surge Coop, which they co-founded in 2018. Since then the river has become a key collaborator and their artistic work has become entwined with this river work, with listening & sound practices opening new approaches to conservation. The river is a site of tensions and contradictions - a recovering landscape that is home to the 3rd largest sewer outfall in Europe. The recording was made remotely via a live stream box at dawn (developed by Sound Camp) set up for 24 hours as part of the Arts Council funded workshop ‘Ecological Radio’, organised by Blanc Sceol (Stephen Shiell & Hannah White) in collaboration with Sound Camp, at the Long Wall Ecology Garden - a site of ecological community care, led by Stephen Shiell and stewarded by Surge Cooperative.

This article is from BMC Infectious Diseases , volume 13 . Abstract Background: Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is an important public health problem in mainland China. HFRS is particularly endemic in Changsha, the capital city of Hunan Province, with one of the highest incidences in China. The occurrence of HFRS is influenced by environmental factors. However, few studies have examined the relationship between environmental variation (such as land use changes and climate variations), rodents and HFRS occurrence. The purpose of this study is to predict the distribution of HFRS and identify the risk factors and relationship between HFRS occurrence and rodent hosts, combining ecological modeling with the Markov chain Monte Carlo approach. Methods: Ecological niche models (ENMs) were used to evaluate potential geographic distributions of rodent species by reconstructing details of their ecological niches in ecological dimensions, and projecting the results onto geography. The Genetic Algorithm for Rule-set Production was used to produce ENMs. Data were collected on HFRS cases in Changsha from 2005 to 2009, as well as national land survey data, surveillance data of rodents, meteorological data and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). Results: The highest occurrence of HFRS was in districts with strong temperature seasonality, where elevation is below 200 m, mean annual temperature is around 17.5°C, and annual precipitation is below 1600 mm. Cultivated and urban lands in particular are associated with HFRS occurrence. Monthly NDVI values of areas predicted present is lower than areas predicted absent, with high seasonal variation. The number of HFRS cases was correlated with rodent density, and the incidence of HFRS cases in urban and forest areas was mainly associated with the density of Rattus norvegicus and Apodemus agrarius, respectively. Conclusions: Heterogeneity between different areas shows that HFRS occurrence is affected by the intensity of human activity, climate conditions, and landscape elements. Rodent density and species composition have significant impacts on the number of HFRS cases and their distribution.

The city is a dynamic system. Its analysis is necessary for all processes at all stages of the existing process, from project development to monitoring long-term use and development methods. A city is a complex system in which two sub-systems, natural and anthropogenic, interact dynamically.[18] Urbanized areas are characterized by their unsustainable development, which is often influenced by anthropogenic factors. As a result, along with various socio-economic problems in the region, there are environmental problems. In the study of environmental problems in urban areas, the analysis from the point of view of urban ecology, which emerged as a result of the integration of several disciplines, is correct in all respects. This article argues that urban ecology is an important branch of the science of geography and that it was formed in harmony with several disciplines.

The principal aim of this work was to use three well-known neural networks, namely Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), Radial Basis Function (RBF), and Adaptive Neural Network-Based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS), to ascertain whether these tools would be able to outperform a classical statistical method (multiple linear regression) in the prediction of the number of resultant adults (survivors) of experimental populations of Chrysomya megacephala (F.) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), based on initial larval density (number of larvae), amount of available food, and duration of immature stages. The coefficient of determination (R2) derived from the RBF was the lowest in the testing subset in relation to the other neural networks, even though its R2 in the training subset exhibited virtually a maximum value. The ANFIS model permitted the achievement of the best testing performance. Hence this model was deemed to be more effective in relation to MLP and RBF for predicting the number of survivors. All three networks outperformed the multiple linear regression, indicating that neural models could be taken as feasible techniques for predicting bionomic variables concerning the nutritional dynamics of blowflies.

Abstract Bionomic features of blowflies may be clarified and detailed by the deployment of appropriate modelling techniques such as artificial neural networks, which are mathematical tools widely applied to the resolution of complex biological problems. The principal aim of this work was to use three well-known neural networks, namely Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), Radial Basis Function (RBF), and Adaptive Neural Network-Based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS), to ascertain whether these tools would be able to outperform a classical statistical method (multiple linear regression) in the prediction of the number of resultant adults (survivors) of experimental populations of Chrysomya megacephala (F.) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), based on initial larval density (number of larvae), amount of available food, and duration of immature stages. The coefficient of determination (R2) derived from the RBF was the lowest in the testing subset in relation to the other neural networks, even though its R2 in the training subset exhibited virtually a maximum value. The ANFIS model permitted the achievement of the best testing performance. Hence this model was deemed to be more effective in relation to MLP and RBF for predicting the number of survivors.
