Rather than trace the life cycle(s) of one or more software projects, the focus is on the operations of a software development department as a continuous stream of software products are developed, placed into operation, and maintained. A number of research questions are ""ripe'' for investigating including: (1) the efficacy of different organizational structures in different software development environments, (2) personnel turnover, (3) impact of management approaches such as management by objectives, and (4) the organizational/environmental determinants of productivity.

An object-oriented software library has been developed that is used to integrate a Paraxial Beam solver within both an overset (OVERFLOW) and an unstructured (AVUS) CFD model.The Paraxial Beam equation is used to propagate optical waveforms through the turbulent, unsteady flow fields produced by the structured overset and unstructured solvers. To achieve this new capability, an object-oriented, software library approach has been undertaken and has been used to develop the following components; a standalone mesh preprocessor, an easily integrated Paraxial Beam solver, a standalone Paraxial Beam solver and an assortment of post-processing tools. The new capability has been integrated within OVERFLOW and AVUS, and demonstrated for evaluating the Aero-Optical propagation through unsteady, turbulent flows past a circular cylinder and compared to aerodynamic and aero-optical data for a hemispherical turret.

Although there are many cost estimation models available, cost overruns and late deliveries still persist. Coupling the Constructive Cost model (COCOMO) and the Systems Dynamics Model of Software Project Management can provide a tool to study project management over the life of a project, to use sensitivity analysis to enhance COCOMO's cost driver set, and to utilize an automated optimization system for software cost estimation in a single or multi-project environment. This new type of model creates a means to study the multi-project environment and determine what the advantages and disadvantages are to sharing resources between different software projects. Several \"C\" programs were developed, that when interfaced and coupled with the system dynamic model, provide a tool to optimize cost estimates in a two project environment. It also creates an environment to perform extensive sensitivity analysis for the enhancement of COCOMO's cost driver set in the single and two project environment.

Simulation models typically possess primitive user interfaces. Users must spend substantial amounts of time learning the model before they gain proficiency in using the model. A versatile, user-friendly interface reduces the time and frustration involved in learning a new system. This research effort designs a user-friendly interface for the System Dynamics Model of Software Management. The interface is written in a batch programming language, compatible with the IBM personal micro-computer. The interface is a product of the prototype design approach. A sophisticated batch language provides the self- generating menu structures, advanced string handling capabilities, and color enhancements.
