Response feedback control loops effects on lateral-directional dynamics of variable stability transport aircraft

The application of control moment gyroscopes to the pointing and control system of the large space telescope is discussed. The parameter plane analysis technique is used to present the nonlinearity representing the control moment gyroscope gimbal bearing friction. The technique affords both analytic and graphic portrayal of the effects of variations is selected system parameters. Diagrams of the systems involved in the tests are presented.

Attitude control techniques for the pointing and stabilization of very large, inherently flexible spacecraft systems were investigated. The attitude dynamics and control of a long, homogeneous flexible beam whose center of mass is assumed to follow a circular orbit was analyzed. First order effects of gravity gradient were included. A mathematical model which describes the system rotations and deflections within the orbital plane was developed by treating the beam as a number of discretized mass particles connected by massless, elastic structural elements. The uncontrolled dynamics of the system are simulated and, in addition, the effects of the control devices were considered. The concept of distributed modal control, which provides a means for controlling a system mode independently of all other modes, was examined. The effect of varying the number of modes in the model as well as the number and location of the control devices were also considered.

Voyager IRIS data reveal strong similarities among a broad range of features which differ considerably in visual appearance. The atmosphere above anticyclonic features, including the major white ovals, the Great Red Spot, and a zone, are cold relative to the immediate surroundings in the upper troposphere and tropopause region. These results are consistent with upwelling and divergence in this part of the atmosphere. A hot spot and a barge, which are localized cyclonic features, are found to be warm relative to their surroundings, implying subsidence with accompanying convergence. In all cases, the thermal wind shear associated with the features indicates a decay of the vorticity with height in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. Vertical velocities inferred from the observed temperature perturbations imply an upper limit of vertical mixing times near the tropopause of approximately 20 years. Temperatures in the upper stratosphere above the anticyclonic features show considerable variation, but in most cases are found to be relatively warm.

DART is a multibody dynamics code developed by Photon Research Associates for the Air Force Astronautics Laboratory (AFAL). The code is intended primarily to simulate the dynamics of large space structures, particularly during the deployment phase of their missions. DART integrates nonlinear equations of motion numerically. The number of bodies in the system being simulated is arbitrary. The bodies' interconnection joints can have an arbitrary number of degrees of freedom between 0 and 6. Motions across the joints can be large. Provision for simulating on-board control systems is provided. Conservation of energy and momentum, when applicable, are used to evaluate DART's performance. After a brief description of DART, studies made to test the program prior to its delivery to AFAL are described. The first is a large angle reorientating of a flexible spacecraft consisting of a rigid central hub and four flexible booms. Reorientation was accomplished by a single-cycle sine wave shape torque input. In the second study, an appendage, mounted on a spacecraft, was slewed through a large angle. Four closed-loop control systems provided control of this appendage and of the spacecraft's attitude. The third study simulated the deployment of the rim of a bicycle wheel configuration large space structure. This system contained 18 bodies. An interesting and unexpected feature of the dynamics was a pulsing phenomena experienced by the stays whole playout was used to control the deployment. A short description of the current status of DART is given.

Observations from the TOPEX/POSEIDON (T/P) radar altimeter, along with other observations and meteorological products, were used to examine the relationship between ocean dynamics and thermodynamics in the Pacific Ocean.

Historically, orbital masses have been used as automatic balancers in rotating machines. However, in these applications, the masses are free to move and rotate with the rotor from zero to operating speeds. For gas turbine applications it is desirable for the orbital masses to be fixed and unmoving, until their release from a sudden unbalance at the operating speed, such as occurs from a blade-out event. The objective of this work is to develop the dynamical equations of motion for orbital masses on a rotating shaft. In subsequent work these equations will be incorporated into a rotor structural dynamics computer code and the feasibility of attenuating rotor unbalance response with orbital masses will be investigated.

Band Dynamics

Basic concepts involved in the mathematical modeling of the aerodynamic response of an aircraft to arbitrary maneuvers are reviewed. The original formulation of an aerodynamic response in terms of nonlinear functionals is shown to be compatible with a derivation based on the use of nonlinear functional expansions. Extensions of the analysis through its natural connection with ideas from bifurcation theory are indicated.

Let u(x bar,t) be a weak solution of the Euler equations, governing the inviscid polytropic gas dynamics; in addition, u(x bar, t) is assumed to respect the usual entropy conditions connected with the conservative Euler equations. We show that such entropy solutions of the gas dynamics equations satisfy a minimum entropy principle, namely, that the spatial minimum of their specific entropy, (Ess inf s(u(x,t)))/x, is an increasing function of time. This principle equally applies to discrete approximations of the Euler equations such as the Godunov-type and Lax-Friedrichs schemes. Our derivation of this minimum principle makes use of the fact that there is a family of generalized entrophy functions connected with the conservative Euler equations.

On April 29, 1990, the plasma tail of Comet Austin was observed with a CCD camera on the 105-cm Schmidt telescope at the Kiso Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The area of the CCD used in this observation is only about 1 sq cm. When this CCD is used on the 105-cm Schmidt telescope at the Kiso Observatory, the area corresponds to a narrow square view of 12 ft x 12 ft. By comparison with the photograph of Comet Austin taken by Numazawa (personal communication) on the same night, we see that only a small part of the plasma tail can be photographed at one time with the CCD. However, by shifting the view on the CCD after each exposure, we succeeded in imaging the entire length of the cometary magnetosphere of 1.6 x 10(exp 6) km. This new technique is called 'the mosaic CCD method'. In order to study the dynamics of cometary plasma tails, seven frames of the comet from the head to the tail region were twice imaged with the mosaic CCD method and two sets of images were obtained. Six microstructures, including arcade structures, were identified in both the images. Sketches of the plasma tail including microstructures are included.

The rotational dynamics of irregularly shaped satellites and the origin of Kirkwood Gaps are discussed. The chaotic tumbling of Hyperion and the anomalously low eccentricity of Deimos are examined. The Digital Orrery is used to explore the phase space of the ellipic restricted three body problem near the principal commensurabilities (2/1, 5/2, 3/1, and 3/2). The results for the 3/1 commensurability are in close agreement with those found earlier with the algebraic mapping method. Large chaotic zones are associated with the 3/1, 2/1 and 5/2 resonances, where there are gaps in the distribution of asteroids. The region near the 3/2 resonance, where the Hilda group of asteroids is located, is largely devoid of chaotic behavior. Thus, there is a qualitative agreement between the character of the motion and the distribution of asteroids.

Some recent developments in acceleration of convergence methods for vector sequences are reviewed. The methods considered are the minimal polynomial extrapolation, the reduced rank extrapolation, and the modified minimal polynomial extrapolation. The vector sequences to be accelerated are those that are obtained from the iterative solution of linear or nonlinear systems of equations. The convergence and stability properties of these methods as well as different ways of numerical implementation are discussed in detail. Based on the convergence and stability results, strategies that are useful in practical applications are suggested. Two applications to computational fluid mechanics involving the three dimensional Euler equations for ducted and external flows are considered. The numerical results demonstrate the usefulness of the methods in accelerating the convergence of the time marching techniques in the solution of steady state problems.

Work in the past has established that a few percent of the time, under northward interplanetary magnetic field and thus magnetically quiet conditions, sun aligned arcs are found in the polar cap with intensities greater than the order of a kilo Rayleigh in the visible. Here we extend this view. We first note that imaging systems with sensitivity down to tens of Rayleighs in the visible find sun aligned arcs in the polar cap far more often, closer to half the time than a few percent. Furthermore, these sun aligned arcs have simple electrodynamics. They mark boundaries between rapid antisunward flow of ionospheric plasma on their dawn side and significantly slower flow, or even sunward flow, on their dusk side. Since the sun aligned arcs are typically the order of 1000 km to transpolar in the sun-earth direction, and the order of 100 km or less in the dawn-dusk direction, they demarcate lines of strongly anisotropic ionospheric flow shears or convection cells. The very quiet polar cap (strongly northward IMF) is in fact characterized by the presence of sun aligned arcs and multiple highly anisotropic ionospheric flow shears. Sensitive optical images are a valuable diagnostic with which to study polar ionospheric convection under these poorly understood conditions. Reprints.

The Maritime Surface and Subsurface (MARS) Virtual Reality Simulator (VRS) has a role in determining the transfer of training. Determining the transfer of training requires knowledge of the ship dynamics. This paper identifies the ship dynamics for a CF Bay-Class ship as well as a simulated ship. Simulation and sea trial data are collected and used for a system's identification exercise. Sources of error came from the sea state, crew behaviours, and the Differential Global Positioning System. Despite the sources of error, the data were relatively clean and the identification exercise was able to proceed. The analysis produced a piecewise linear and continuous model description for the ship's dynamics, with numerical coefficients. The advantage of the model is that it is computationally simpler than the full six degree of freedom model, and still captures over 90% of the experimental variance. The algorithms developed in this paper may be implemented to generate a real time ship dynamics model that could be downloaded into a portable MARS VRS system for onboard training and rehearsal.

Talk by Jochen Braun of Otto-von-Guericke University, Magdeburg, Germany.  Given to the Redwood Center for Theoretical Neuroscience at UC Berkeley. Abstract. Visual perception has all the hallmarks of an ongoing, cooperative-competitive process: probabilistic outcome, self-organization, order-disorder transitions, multi-stability, and hysteresis. Accordingly, it is tempting to speculate that the underlying collective neural activity performs an exploratory attractor dynamics (spontaneous transitions between distinct steady-states), perhaps at multiple spatial and temporal scales. Here I summarize our recent investigations of this dynamical hypothesis. In each case, a careful empirical study of perceptual dynamics fully constrains an idealized model of the stochastic dynamics of collective neural activity: • The path-dependence of motion grouping (e.g., when motion coherence follows a random walk), reveals the effective energy landscape and relaxation time of grouping percepts, experimentally confirming the simultaneous presence of distinct attractor states. • The scalar property of perceptual dominance times is readily explained by stochastic accumulation of activity across multiple independent nodes (idealized cortical columns), but not by other kinds of stochastic processes (e.g., diffusion-to-bound). • The paradoxical input dependence of perceptual dominance in multi-stable phenomena (‘Levelt’s propositions’) constrains concurrent processing at two levels: stochastic accumulation of evidence by independent lower-level nodes, and cooperative-competitive interactions between tightly coupled upper-level nodes. This experimentally derived architecture maps naturally onto the well-known ‘saliency map’ and ‘predictive coding’ schemes of visual processing. I conclude that the dynamical hypothesis outlined above permits a particularly close and direct back-and-forth between perceptual experiment and computational theory and thus has the potential to dramatically accelerate our progress in understanding visual function.

Relativistic electron beam research at M.I.T. focuses on the generation of intense coherent electromagnetic radiation in the centimeter, millimeter and submillimeter wavelength ranges. The primary radiation mechanism which is being studied at the present time is the free electron laser instability which is excited when an electron beam passes through a spatially periodic, transverse magnetic field (wiggler field). This instability is characterized by axial electron bunching and has emission wavelengths associated with the Doppler upshifted wiggler periodicity. Keywords: Reprints.

Interacting quantum spin models are remarkably useful for describing different types of physical, chemical, and biological systems. Significant understanding of their equilibrium properties has been achieved to date, especially for the case of spin models with short-range couplings. However, progress toward the development of a comparable understanding in long-range interacting models, in particular out-of-equilibrium, remains limited. In a recent work, we proposed a semiclassical numerical method to study spin models, the discrete truncated Wigner approximation (DTWA), and demonstrated its capability to correctly capture the dynamics of one- and two-point correlations in one-dimensional (1D) systems.
