2DTIC ADA623475: Socioscape: Real-Time Analysis Of Dynamic Heterogeneous Networks In Complex Socio-Cultural Systems

By

In many problems arising in social, technological, and other fields, it is often necessary to analyze populations of individuals interconnected by a network. Real-time analysis of network data is important for detecting anomaly, predicting vulnerability, and assessing the potential impact of interventions in various social and information systems. It is not unusual for network data to be large, dynamic, heterogeneous, noisy and incomplete. Each of these characteristics adds a degree of complexity to the interpretation and analysis of networks. Traditional approaches to network analysis tend to make simplistic assumptions, such as assuming that there is only a single node or edge type, or ignoring the role/mind of nodal actors and the dynamics of the networks. We intend to develop new hierarchical and dynamic Bayesian formalisms and novel graph.

3DTIC ADA321077: Assessment Of Cartesian/Cubic Grid Systems For Computational Fluid Dynamic Analysis Of Complex Geometries.

By

A MacCormack time-stepping predictor-corrector method was applied to compressible subsonic flow about a NACA 0012 airfoil, using a composite van Driest turbulence model and a lowest order boundary condition interpolation. Since good AGARD pressure data was available, it was possible to compare processor times under the two grid systems for identical average pressure (lift) errors. The Cartesian system turned out to be less efficient by a factor of only three. Specifically, a 272x145 rectangular grid characterized by dense, point-wasteful bands competed with a 121x45 body oriented grid burdened with coordinate stretching factors. Some elementary analysis accompanying the numerical experiments gives further grounds for believing that Cartesian/cubic grids may be only modestly less efficient than the more standard, body oriented ones, while affording far greater generality and requiring far less operator intervention.

4Systematic Analysis Of Complex Dynamic Systems : The Case Of The USS Vincennes

By

Recent studies on the Vincennes incident have centered around the impact of stress in decision making. This thesis, which is a case analysis of a historical event, offers another perspective through the use of organizational and contextual factors as a means to ascertain what happened when the USS Vincennes shot down Iran Air Flight 655. Data extracted from the unclassified investigation report by Rear Admiral William M. Fogarty and the transcripts from the Senate Hearing before the Committee on Armed Services were analyzed quantitatively, through regression and correlation analysis in conjunction with a graphical analysis and interpretation, in an effort to resolve the lack of reconciliation between system and recollected data by witnesses. A comparative analysis was also conducted between these archival sources of data and interview data from Captain Will Rogers, 111, former Commanding Officer of the Vincennes. Additionally, to identify causal factors that led to the outcome, further analysis using the Events Path Model, Dynamic Systems Model, and Cybernetic Model of Mutual Causality was conducted. The findings of the quantitative analysis portion supports Captain Rogers' argument, which included a track number issue and the existence of another aircraft.... Command and Control, C2, Cybernetics, Organizational Learning, Vincennes Incident, Complex Dynamic Systems, Negative/Positive Feedback, Systems Analysis, Garbage Can Model, Mutual Causality, Wholistic Approach to Change, Decision Making, Ambiguity.
