The principal economic assumptions of this paper are neoclassical behavior assumptions on a consumer group which owns the resources and a collection of producers employing these resources. A saddle value problem is formulated to characterize equilibrium in the economy in the sense that at equilibrium prices producers determine production plans to maximize profits and that these outputs and inputs are exactly those demanded and supplied respectively by the consumer group. The saddle value problem is shown to be equivalent to a dual pair of uniextremizations termed the consumer group's problem and the producers' problem. The neoclassical economic assumptions yield sufficient conditions which are among the most general ones for guaranteeing a saddle point and simultaneously a perfect duality for the dual programming pair. Economic interpretations are given for all the variables of the consumer group's problem and for all the variables of the producers' problem even at non-optimal stages in each problem. The approach is an infinite dimensional extension of the Charnes' constrained game linear programming equivalents in finite dimensions

This work presents a self-sustaining physical framework built around the main axiom that wave-particle duality is an intrinsic property not only of the micro-world but of every physical object in our universe, including the universe itself . While modeling the cosmos with a single unifying wave function may seem like an 'oversimplification,' this book demonstrates that it is, in fact, a profound unification that leads to a complete and self-consistent cosmological model . The framework's validity is demonstrated by its ability to derive—from first principles and without free parameters—the entire suite of observed cosmological parameters. These predictions include: the flatness of the universe, the CMB temperature, solutions to the 'dark matter' and 'dark energy' problems, the precise cosmic composition, the Hubble constant, and the age of the universe . As a final proof of its internal coherence, the mass of the universe itself is shown to be a calculated output of the theory, not an input . This book offers a deeper and more accurate representation of reality, showing a fundamental unification of quantum mechanics and cosmology.

This concept has come up several times in the literature, but has never been investigated in detail. In this paper the name survival rate is used. We show that in many models of practical interest the survival rates of certain random variables have nice properties. This makes it possible to obtain bounds on the distribution functions of these random variables. Moreover, we show that a form of stochastic dominance based on the survival rates of the random variables has some interesting applications. (Author)

Size reduction (logical elimination of variables or constraints or elimination of redundant constraints) and constraint aggregation may all be viewed as preprocessing techniques for solving discrete optimization problems. It can be shown analytically that in the absence of constraint aggregation, size reduction leads to a poor linear programming relaxation value. A novel method was proposed to convert an equality knapsack problem into an equivalent inequality knapsack problem. The use of least-lower-bound based candidate problem selection in solving equality knapsacks was established. (author)

Minimax problems are fundamented to nonlinear programming, because of the way constraints can be represented using Lagrange multipliers. Better ways of solving minimax problems would lead thus lead to breakthroughs in solving most other problems of optimization. The dissertation opens a new avenue to the study of minimax problems by developing a theory of dual operations on saddle- functions convex-concave functions parallel to that already known for (purely) convex functions. Results are thereby obtained concerning minimax problems which are dual to each other. It is expected that these results will find computational applications analogous to those already acclaimed in the convex case, for instance in decomposition of large-scale problems.

A duality theorem of Heathcote exhibiting and relationship between first passage times of the queue length in the GI/M/1 queue and the busy period of its dual M/G/1 queue is generalized to the phase type queues GI/PH1 and PH/G/1. The phase type distributions include a number of well-known models such as generalized Erlang and hyper-exponential as special cases and form a versatile class with a number of interesting closure properties. Ca65Mg15Zn20 bulk-metallic glass (BMG) exhibited a typical brittle fracture behavior during compressive loading at room temperature. Samples exploded into many small pieces after elastic deformation and no macroscopic plasticity was observed. The fracture surface demonstrated multiple fracture patterns, including typical metallic-glass vein patterns and glass mirror, mist, and hackle patterns. These observations show that Ca-based BMGs are subjected to multiple brittle fracture modes under compressive loading. Periodic nanoscale corrugations were found in the hackle region, which may indicate local plasticity for the brittle fracture.

The notion of a mind/body split is erroneous and is not accurate to how we actually experience ourselves. We can only ever experience ourselves as fully embodied. The abstract concept of gender identity is at odds with our direct experiencing of ourselves. Thought experiments such as the one presented here are both irrelevant to sex based reality and set up an error in thinking which is contrary to the reality of our physical experience. #sexrealist #genderabolitionist
