Damage control systems are evolving rapidly into large, complex systems having the potential for collecting vast quantities of detailed information. To handle this information effectively, damage control systems will be transformed from their traditional centralized architectures to more efficient and more survivable distributed architectures. A coherent method of transferring information across distributed networks is required in the form of an interface protocol that can be used by damage control systems and personnel to quickly assess damage situations and initiate corrective actions. This report addresses the requirements of such a protocol and discusses related network and computer architecture issues, and their impact on the overall system design.
