Artificial islands and gravity- and pile-founded towers used for the exploration and production of petroleum resources in the Alaskan Beaufort Sea will be affected by conditions not found in more temperate waters. The force of sea ice, the thawing of subsea permafrost, and seasonal freezing and thawing all may cause failure of the foundations of these structures. To ensure the stability of foundations and fill structures, special precautions must be taken in selecting sites and evaluating the engineering properties of sea bed and fill materials. (Author)
