5Heat Fluxes Associated With Intrusions During The SHEBA Ice Station Drift

By

A yearlong set of temperature and salinity profiles from the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic (SHEBA) is analyzed to identify intrusions from the mixed layer to a depth of 150 m. Ensemble averaged temperature and salinity profiles, spectral analysis of the vertical thermal structure, and bathymetry are used to divide the SHEBA ice station track into four regions: Beaufort Sea; Northwind Rise and break; Chukchi Plateau and break; Mendelev Abyssal Plain. Average vertical gradients of temperature and salinity over intrusive features are used to calculate Turner angles and molecular beat fluxes. Bering Sea Summer Water dominates the structure in the temperature and salinity profiles of the Northwind Rise region, with a maximum temperature intrusion of 2.2%degrees centigrade. Cold intrusions penetrate the upper halocline in the Chukchi Plateau region. The width of the distribution of Turner angle in the vertical profiles is indicative of the degree of the interleaved structure. Mesoscale features and associated internal wave activity accompany highly variable vertical structure over the Northwind Rise and Chukchi Plateau regions

12DTIC ADA098597: Upper Ocean Temperature, Salinity And Density In The Vicinity Of Arctic Drift Station FRAM I, March To May, 1979.

By

A program designed to measure temperature and conductivity in the upper 270 m of the Arctic Ocean within a 150-km radius of Drift Station FRAM I is described, and data in the form of profiles of temperature, salinity, and density as functions of depth are presented for each of 104 casts made with a portable, self contained conductivity-temperature-depth instrument. Seventy-five of the casts were made away from the ice station at sites reached by helicopter. Details of sampling procedure, instrument calibration, and data organization are given. (Author)

15DTIC ADA054720: Nansen Drift Station Project - Remote Sea-Ice Runway Construction.

By

In the past, surface-flooding activities have been confined to areas near major military logistic centers. As a result, techniques developed for sea-ice runway construction relied extensively upon the use of heavy equipment to clear snow and position large stationary pumping equipment. At remote sites, such as that planned for the proposed Nansen Drift Station, requirements are different. Construction crews will be severely restricted as to their size and number of support equipment available, and they may be required to work concurrently at a number of scattered locations. A field-test program conducted by the Civil Engineering Laboratory at Barrow, Alaska, during March 1977 added a new dimension to surface-flooding technology. The exercises demonstrated the feasibility and capability of using small, lightweight pumps to prepare sections of a sea-ice runway. The water-handling equipment included two modified, highly portable, centrifugally driven trash pumps that had undergone preliminary low-temperature testing in the cold-chamber facilities at CEL. 16Preliminary Results Of Investigations On Arctic Drift Station Charlie

Document number CIA-RDP79T01019A000200080004-7 declassified and released through the CIA's CREST database. Previously available only on four computers located outside of Washington D.C., the Agency was successfully pressured into putting the files online as a result of a MuckRock lawsuit and the efforts of Emma Best. The metadata was collected by Data.World, and the files are now being archived and made text searchable by the Internet Archive.

20DTIC ADA631964: Snow Drift Management: Summit Station Greenland

By

At the request of the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory reviewed available snow survey data and conducted a drifting snow transport analysis for Summit Station, Greenland, to assess the nature of the drifting problems at this site. The severity of drifting during the winter was significantly greater than during summer months; therefore, snowdrift management strategies should focus on minimizing winter accumulations. The transport analysis showed that the snow is conveyed from two dominant directions, southeast and southwest, which satellite imagery of snowdrifts confirmed. Computing the elevation difference between fall and spring surveys allowed estimates of the accumulated drift volume during a winter at Summit. Comparing these computed volumes to the snow transport analysis showed that about 25% of the estimated snow that the wind transports to Summit each winter is deposited and forms drifts, mostly in close proximity to the structures. This analysis demonstrates that weather data (wind speed and direction) and a transport analysis can aid in estimating the volume of snowdrifts needing to be managed at Summit.

Approved For Release 20011Q4127" CIA;RDR79TO1019A000200080002-9 GB 64-12 30 March 196+ q(XX xxXxx $,OVIET PLAN TO ESTABLISH ANOTHER ARCTIC DRIFT STATION The Soviets have now firmed up their earlier plans to establish another Arctic drift station, NP-13, early in April 1964, about 700 kilo- meters north of Cape Schmidt. The new station will replace NP-10 which has become reduced in size, and is now less than 200 kilometers from the North Pole and 1,000 kilometers distant from its nearest land-fall, Severnaya Zemlya. A new staff of 17 for NP-12 has already departed Moscow on 17 March 196+ for its staging area on Tiksi Bay. From here, the staff will be flown 1,200 kilometers north of Vrangel' Island to NP-12, headed by F. N. Kudryavtsev, a physical oceanographer, who in 1962-63 was the USSR exchange scientist on the National Science Foundation's Antarctic research vessel, the Eltanin. The new drift station launching is a part of this year's first phase of the annual Soviet Arctic High Latitude Expedition, Sever-l6--also called Sever-64--which has been described by a Soviet source as the largest ever launched in the history of Soviet Arctic exploration. Over 1,000 tons of freight will be delivered by air, and over 1,000 landings will have to be made on drifting ice. In addition to the delivery of new staffs and supplies, automatic meteorological stations will be set up and scientific teams at temporary bases will be established on ice. The first of these has already been set up in the center of the Laptev Sea. Others will be landed in the Kara, Chukchi, and East Siberian Seas. A comprehensive observational program will be undertaken ranging from the ocean bottom to the upper atmosphere, and will serve the needs of weather and ice forecasting for Northern Sea Route and other operations, as well as provide data for basic environmental research.
