It is said that “Whatever is here is found elsewhere. But whatever is not here is nowhere   else.” These lines are said for the great epic of India The Mahabharata. The name means “great [story of the] Bharatas.” Bharata was an early ancestor of both the Pandavas and Kauravas who fought each other in a great war, but the word is also used for the Indian race, so the Mahabharata Sometimes is referred to as “the great story of India.” The portrayals of women Characters in this epic were left unsatisfied. It wasn’t as though the epic didn’t have powerful, complex women Characters that affected the action in major ways, for instance, there was the widowed Kunti, mother of Pandavas,who dedicates her life to making sure her sons become kings. There was Gandhari, wife of the sightless Kaurava king, who chooses to blindfold her in marriage, thus relinquishing her power as queen and mother. And most of all, there was Panchali, king Drupad’s beautiful daughter, who has the unique distinction of being married to five men at the same time-the five Pandava brothers, the greatest heroes of their time. Panchaali who, some might argue, by her headstrong actions helps to bring about the destruction of the third Age of man. But in some way, they remained shadowy figures, their thoughts and motives mysterious, their emotions portrayed only when they affected the lives of the male heroes, their roles ultimately subservient to those of their fathers or husbands, brothers or sons. Relevant to today’s war-torn world, The Palace of Illusions takes us back to a time that is half history, half myth, and wholly Magical. Narrated by Panchaali, the wife of the legendary Pandava brothers in the Mahabharat, the novel gives us a new interpretation of this ancient tale.

This paper examines Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni's The Palace of Illusions and employs close reading of the text to understand the author’s unique portrayal of Draupadi, one of the most popular heroines of Indian mythology. Female subjectivity and its impact on the characterization of the protagonist is studied in detail. How the author renders Draupadi as  every woman and how an uninvited daughter becomes the universal voice for the dreams, desires, longings, struggles, follies, vulnerabilities, heartaches, heartbreaks and resilience of women over the ages is the main focus of this paper.

What we see in others is only a reï¬ection; others only serve as mirrors to us. We see in others only that which we want to see; in fact, we see what we are. We do nothing but project ourselves on the world. It is difficult to understand Draupadi. But our difficulty does not come from this great woman, it really emanates from us. Our ideas and beliefs, our desires and hopes come in our way of understanding Draupadi.

Abstract The present paper entitled Sita and Draupadi in Novels: Retelling of Epical Women Characters describes the retelling of the myths and deals with the new illustrations of the epical characters Sita and Draupadi as authored in the two novels, The Palace of Illusions (2008) by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni and Sita: An Illustrated Retelling of Ramayana (2013) by Devdutt Pattanaik. In earlier times, women were seen as passive receiver of a more humanitarian treatment to be given by males. There was thus an attempt to improve the woman rather than reform the social conditions which opposed them. Women’s role is not recognized at many times. However, Sita and Draupadi have been portrayed as powerful characters in the two great epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. While they seemed to be complying and dutiful at times, a deeper analysis into their lives. The difficulties that women face within their families are constant in any case of religion, caste or community and yet women continue to be ruled by a abundance of family laws which are illness to women. A woman in general, draws many shades of character. She is efficient of conveying the huge love and fondness of Sita, while also turning into an aggressive comeback seeking entity like Draupadi. Sita and Draupadi do exist in each subjugated woman. She goes through lots of mourning in her life; still she never bends herself in any circumstances. As societies at large is largely male oriented still a woman remains compliant in a society. She holds on her dignity and manages to struggle, achieving success and winning the respect and identification of all those around her. We need to listen to the voices of women from different cultural backgrounds that are calling for culturally located response.  This paper will deal with the two stated novels to locate their positions as illustrated by the two authors.
